“You do what they can do, build in what they can do, circumvent the weaknesses and try to get them to that.” “There's nothing really new, science has helped us understand the effects of things better, great coaches have made us understand it from their experiences. We've all learned from our fairs, unfortunately I've made the same mistakes a couple times, which makes me upset.” “The great ones, relative to your level, do things you can't coach. Don't uncoach them.” In this week's episode of The Podcast, I have the absolute pleasers of sitting down and talking with Vermeil. Throughout the 100-minute chat we talk about: 1)     Two things “Young Coaches” should never stop doing.2)     A simple evaluation that coaches can use and ways to improve upon it3)     Why he feels coaches should start out coaching in high school, and the lessons it taught him. 4)     The importance of going to the source, and the originator of ideas5)     What factors he has seen to impact transfer of training to sport6)     The impacts of size and limb length on work capacity on athletes7)     The importance of working on technique when building sport skills8)     How your philosophy is the backbone of what you do as a coach and how coaches can make alterations based off that. We couldn't be more excited to have Al on the docket as part of The Richmond Seminar, and hope you're able to join us July 15 and 16 at The Marriott Short Pump! Today was like being a kid in a candy store as I had an absolute blast learning from Al Vermeil. Coach Vermeil is most famous for his work as the strength & conditioning coach during the Chicago Bull's dynasty run and his time with the NFL Championship 49ers. However, it's important to mention he has spent time with almost every level including high school. His breadth and depth of knowledge is staggering. Certainly, his expertise is a testament to his dedication to being a lifelong learner. We discussed his personal story and luck to get into strength training at such an early age. He shared the importance of humbling yourself to learn from the greats in the field. He specifically reflected on the importance of Charlie Francis in his development. We dove deep into his preference of training without gadgets whenever possible. We compared workloads of the past and today. Al then shares his thoughts about unilateral vs. bilateral lifts. Coach Vermeil shared his test battery for evaluating athletes. After discussing testing Al explains the key principles of his pyramid of performance. With such a long career in the field, I got Al to share how he created a cadre of trusted friends and advisers. Finally, we conclude with sage advice from Coach Vermeil about how to take care of yourself and the others you have the privilege to work with daily. Al Vermeil is a legend! Al is to the world of strength and conditioning what Steve Jobs is to technology, The Beatles are to music and Bruce Lee is to martial arts. Al holds championship rings from the 49ers during the Montana era, the Bulls during the Jordan era, plus championships in MLB! Al has been inducted into the Strength Coaches Hall of Fame in 2003. Before I had the opportunity to meet Al I always thought that the fitness industry was a career for young fit professionals who would work on their craft while they develop their exit strategy for their second career. After spending quality time with Al I realized that the career of the strength and conditioning coach never ends. Passion, intensity and 100% commitment to life long learning is the path that Al has been on and continues to drive him toward his own personal greatness. His impact on his athletes expands greater than the strength and power gains they developed but more importantly encompasses their personal development from the coaching and compassion he gave each of his students. Al Vermeil is one of the most popular @Perform_Better speakers and valued member of the @mytpi TPI Fitness Advisory Board. I am so blessed to have Al as my mentor, colleague and friend. I am sure you will enjoy this episode as much as I enjoyed recording it.
