Legendary coach Dick Vermeil joins the morning show and gives his insights into the AJ/Jalen Hurts drama. Being a former coach, Vermeil has a lot of insight into player relationships and the dynamics of a locker room. He also looks into the future of the Eagles vs. Steelers game this Sunday.

Tonight, we'll enjoy the last part of the “I'm a Teacher at a School for Children Who Aren't Quite Human” series! On the last episode, Mr. Vermeil was exposed to something hideous that was skulking beneath the school: a beast the headmistress called “the cancer”. Despite a heroic effort, the beast escaped our of the tunnel and into the community at large. After his encounter with it, Mr. Vermeil was left quite physically changed, although a three eyed nurse was attempting to reverse the damage. Now, The Cancer is lose out in the world, and so is the dreaded hunter, Saladin. Faith in the integration initiative is crumbling, and the situation seems impossible. In our last installment, he discovered that he had been hired at a school full of supernatural students-- as part of an initiative meant to help them integrate and function in human society. Shortly after that, he received a disturbing series of text messages, which turned out to be from an assassin! He foiled the assassin's attempt on one of his students, but ultimately the assassin escaped. We rejoin the story as a school-wide lockdown has been called, and that includes our dear teacher. In order to reach the safehouse, however, he must pass through a labyrinth of concrete tunnels, and who knows what horrors are lurching through those? On today's episode Paul Domowitch, formerly of the Philadelphia Inquirer, will be joined by former Philadelphia Eagles head coach Dick Vermeil. The two will talk about Vermeil's early career as a head coach in the high school level (which also included a run as a swim coach), up to his tenure with the Philadelphia Eagles from 1976-82 which included a trip to Super Bowl XV. Vermeil was out of the coaching spotlight for 15 years before returning to the league with the St. Louis Rams from 1997-99, and again with the Kansas City Chiefs from 2001-2005. Vermeil, since then, punched his ticket to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2022 and is the current owner of Vermeil Wines, a winery and vineyard in Napa, California. He also keeps in touch with his former players. The two will then discuss the current happenings with the Philadelphia Eagles as training camp and preseason wraps up this week before the Eagles take on the Indianapolis Colts. Paul would also like to get Coach Vermeil's thoughts on quarterback Jalen Hurts, head coach Nick Sirianni, and whether or not the Eagles can get back to the Super Bowl.

Today's guest on the Mushroom Society Series on the Coach and Coordinator Podcast is with retired NFL Coach Al Saunders. Coach Saunders began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at USC under John McKay from 1970–71 and served as receivers coach for the University of Missouri's Fiesta Bowl team in 1972. Saunders spent 1973 through 1975 as a play-caller and offensive backfield coach at Utah State. He then spent six seasons as assistant head coach/offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach at the University of California. He guided the Golden Bears to set 32 NCAA, conference, and school records and finished each season ranked in the top ten in the nation in passing. His final collegiate stop was in 1982 as offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach under Johnny Majors at the University of Tennessee where he built an explosive, record-setting offense. His first NFL head coaching position came with the San Diego Chargers as interim head coach in 1986 following the resignation of Don Coryell. He spent two full seasons as the Chargers' head coach after previously working as receivers coach in 1983-84 and assistant head coach in 1985-86 for what was one of the most prolific offenses in the history of modern football. In 1985, San Diego's "Air Coryell" led the NFL in passing and total offense for an unprecedented fifth time in six years. From 1989 until 1998, Saunders was with the Kansas City Chiefs. Saunders worked for 10 winning seasons under the highly respected head coach Marty Schottenheimer again as a part of a top-performing offense. Saunders joined the St. Louis Rams coaching staff under the legendary Dick Vermeil. Serving as associate head coach and receivers coach with the Rams (1999-2000), he helped create one of the most dynamic and explosive offenses that the NFL had ever seen, and eventually helped lead the Rams to a Super Bowl XXXIV victory. Leading the NFL in virtually every significant offensive category, "The Greatest Show on Turf" established numerous NFL records for scoring and offensive production. When Vermeil came out of retirement in 2001, Saunders reunited with his old mentor and former team, the Kansas City Chiefs, as the assistant head coach/offensive coordinator until Vermeil's final retirement in 2006. Under Saunders' direction as coordinator, the Chiefs offense was the most productive unit in the entire NFL during that 5-year span. 46 franchise records for offense production were established and no team scored more points (2,175), gained more yards (30,470), or scored more touchdowns (262) during that time. Coach Saunders was ranked as the #1 Offensive Coordinator in the past 25 years in the NFL by ESPN and in 2005, and was named USA Today's Offensive Coach of the Year. Over the last week and a half, we've been fielding a lot of questions about a segment of our podcast that takes on the dominant narrative surrounding the “Penn State Case.” I am not interested in in appearances, as I often say. I am concerned with the truth. The Sandusky case is not something I had any desire in learning about, but once I scratched the surface, it began a deep-dive into the facts and the narrative surrounding the case. I've written about it in the past…taking a position as I have—which unfortunately appears to be the only reasonable position—is an easy way to get one shunned from polite society. So here is my challenge: just listen to the show. You may not want to. You may think it will creep you out…it very well could. But this is an important story and it goes much deeper than a man's guilt or innocence. It exposes the cultural rot that exists within this society…and its cause is probably the opposite of what most people have been told. We have a corporate media structure that exists in today's culture comprised—almost entirely—of truly unimpressive people. These people jump to rash conclusions either out of sheer ignorance or wonton political—read: leftist—motivations. I don't know how we fight back against it, but I believe that being aware of the problem is a good place to start. Part of my initial strategy for building awareness—even in the last show notes page—was to send you back to Episode 77 of Sportlanders the Podcast, which I called “the most important podcast” we'd done up until that point…and start from there. Human nature is such that people would rather insult me than go through the effort of hunting down an old podcast—a task which was not difficult, as I gave the link right in the show notes. Thus, after a rash of BS heading my way, my tactics changed. What we did is compile our material on the case into one single show, edited for clarity and relevance. We encourage you to start here. It will eventually—both directly and indirectly—destroy the essence of professional golf. The PGA Tour The Tour went a long way in setting us back when it came to its response to the covid situation. Professional golf is a sport that is uniquely designed to change people's lives. Competing in LIV does not do that. The Saudis have not created a new market. It is an “artificial stimulus.” A “kamikaze” attack on an American institution perhaps. Golf, to be compelling, must have an element of fear. When everyone becomes super-rich, there's nothing to fear. Tiger Woods (& Rory McIlroy) role in the PGA Tour … Is the Tour becoming cartelized? The golf media won't ask the questions because it is terrified of Tiger Woods. Does the sport of golf need professional golf to thrive or even survive?   College football Sports have contributed to the cultural decline over the last two-and-a-half years. This much is clear. Pro golf, college and pro basketball, and college football all had the chance to step up and be leaders in the culture and stand up to the crazy policies implemented by the covid regime, but none of them did. Every other sports organization and league across the world were cowardly as well. How and why did this happen? The cancellation of the 2020 Ivy League basketball tournament started the ball rolling… “College football no longer exists.” Winning the National Championship is now the only thing. The NIL money, the new transfer rules, and the upcoming 12-team playoff has destroyed what was once perhaps the favorite sport of much of the country—college football. It's not the same sport that it was even three years ago. It's been quite a week on the Philly sports scene, with the Phillies on fire ... and the organization hosting a Wall of Fame weekend that included a controversial visit by hits king Pete Rose. Plus, the Eagles welcomed fans to the Linc Sunday evening ahead of their Friday preseason opener and Dick Vermeil was enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Bernie visits with former St. Louis Post-Dispatch Rams and current Blues beat writer Jim Thomas. Jim talks about being in Canton for Dick Vermeil's Pro Football Hall of Fame induction ceremony. Bernie and Jim also share some of their favorite Rams memories, especially from Vermeil's tenure.

In 1999, when the first bottle of his Jean Louis Vermeil Cabernet was produced, Coach Dick Vermeil was hooked. Like all of his endeavors, whether it was football, broadcasting or wine - the Vermeil-ism of surrounding yourself with capable people and you will be a success still rings true. Coach Vermeil is the number one salesman, a fact he is proud of.  Today, Vermeil wines offers 11 different wines in Napa Valley, not far from where he grew up. Terry Hoage is one of the few safeties in the NFL to have scored a touchdown - his only one. What's rarer still, he scored while he was playing with the Eagles - at the height of Buddy Ball. After dabbling with several post retirement careers, Terry and his wife, Jennifer, moved their family to Paso Robles, on the central California coast. It was on the piece of property where they started TH Estate where they produce Rhone-style wines. Terry tells Derrick he is having fun and every wine name has a double meaning - one from Terry's football career and one from his wine-making life!  Colleen Wolfe and Ross Tucker have it out as they go they try to decide which is the better beverage: beer or wine.
