On today's episode Paul Domowitch, formerly of the Philadelphia Inquirer, will be joined by former Philadelphia Eagles head coach Dick Vermeil. The two will talk about Vermeil's early career as a head coach in the high school level (which also included a run as a swim coach), up to his tenure with the Philadelphia Eagles from 1976-82 which included a trip to Super Bowl XV. Vermeil was out of the coaching spotlight for 15 years before returning to the league with the St. Louis Rams from 1997-99, and again with the Kansas City Chiefs from 2001-2005. Vermeil, since then, punched his ticket to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2022 and is the current owner of Vermeil Wines, a winery and vineyard in Napa, California. He also keeps in touch with his former players. The two will then discuss the current happenings with the Philadelphia Eagles as training camp and preseason wraps up this week before the Eagles take on the Indianapolis Colts. Paul would also like to get Coach Vermeil's thoughts on quarterback Jalen Hurts, head coach Nick Sirianni, and whether or not the Eagles can get back to the Super Bowl.

In 1999, when the first bottle of his Jean Louis Vermeil Cabernet was produced, Coach Dick Vermeil was hooked. Like all of his endeavors, whether it was football, broadcasting or wine - the Vermeil-ism of surrounding yourself with capable people and you will be a success still rings true. Coach Vermeil is the number one salesman, a fact he is proud of.  Today, Vermeil wines offers 11 different wines in Napa Valley, not far from where he grew up. Terry Hoage is one of the few safeties in the NFL to have scored a touchdown - his only one. What's rarer still, he scored while he was playing with the Eagles - at the height of Buddy Ball. After dabbling with several post retirement careers, Terry and his wife, Jennifer, moved their family to Paso Robles, on the central California coast. It was on the piece of property where they started TH Estate where they produce Rhone-style wines. Terry tells Derrick he is having fun and every wine name has a double meaning - one from Terry's football career and one from his wine-making life!  Colleen Wolfe and Ross Tucker have it out as they go they try to decide which is the better beverage: beer or wine. Morten reacts to an epic game between the Chiefs and Ravens from this past weekend, and explains why he thinks Lamar Jackson is the MVP of the league through two weeks of the season. We then move to our interview with Dick Vermeil, where he discusses a wide range of topics: his involvement in the wine business, and the history behind his company, “Vermeil Wines” (07:41); his coaching style, and the difference between delegating and designating (13:53); Morten having teammates on the Chiefs that weren't born when he started playing (15:49); knowing when to release a player, and remaining close with many players he has cut (16:46); being the first official special teams coach in NFL history (18:12); taking over an Eagles franchise in the late 1970s that was a losing program, and what it took to turn them into NFC Champions (19:38); why the NFL needs to do a better job helping its former players with medical assistance as they get older (24:04); the amazing story of Vince Papale making the team in Philly (24:46); a review of “American Underdog: The Kurt Warner Story” (26:18); his love for underdogs, and why London Fletcher should be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame (27:05); what a Gold Jacket would mean to him (27:44); why Tom Flores getting inducted helped clear the way for Dick, and the various high-profile coaches stumping for him as a candidate (29:12); the hilarious story of David Baker's phone call to let Dick know he was a finalist (30:43); reminiscing about the late, great Frank Gansz Sr. (31:58); why he stepped away from coaching after winning the Super Bowl with a historically great St. Louis Rams team in 1999 (36:59); why he came out of retirement to coach the Chiefs in the early 2000s (38:48); working his players so hard in St. Louis, there was almost a “mutiny,” and why things were different in Kansas City (40:15); why Patrick Mahomes could go down as the finest quarterback to ever play in the NFL (42:45); the state of the Rams, his relationship with Sean McVay, and why Matthew Stafford will be great in L.A. (44:13); why he doesn't think Doug Pederson should've been fired in Philadelphia (47:03); and this week's edition of “The Name Game,” featuring Kurt Warner, Ron Jaworski, Trent Green, Marshall Faulk, Tony Gonzalez, Jared Allen, Harold Carmichael and Will Shields (48:45).Then we move to this week's edition of “Morten's Fast 5,” where our Hall of Famer makes picks for the five biggest games of the football weekend (01:05:13 – 01:12:08). Morten gives his picks for Buccaneers at Rams (01:05:51), Saints at Patriots (01:07:05), Packers at 49ers (01:08:36), Chargers at Chiefs (01:09:33), and Washington Football Team at Bills (01:10:49).Finally, “Morten's Game Winner” returns – a weekly monologue from The Great Dane on his biggest takeaway of the week. This week, Morten reflects on his relationship with Coach Vermeil, and explains why he's had a profound impact on every single one of his former players (01:12:08).

Today was like being a kid in a candy store as I had an absolute blast learning from Al Vermeil. Coach Vermeil is most famous for his work as the strength & conditioning coach during the Chicago Bull's dynasty run and his time with the NFL Championship 49ers. However, it's important to mention he has spent time with almost every level including high school. His breadth and depth of knowledge is staggering. Certainly, his expertise is a testament to his dedication to being a lifelong learner. We discussed his personal story and luck to get into strength training at such an early age. He shared the importance of humbling yourself to learn from the greats in the field. He specifically reflected on the importance of Charlie Francis in his development. We dove deep into his preference of training without gadgets whenever possible. We compared workloads of the past and today. Al then shares his thoughts about unilateral vs. bilateral lifts. Coach Vermeil shared his test battery for evaluating athletes. After discussing testing Al explains the key principles of his pyramid of performance. With such a long career in the field, I got Al to share how he created a cadre of trusted friends and advisers. Finally, we conclude with sage advice from Coach Vermeil about how to take care of yourself and the others you have the privilege to work with daily. Super Bowl winning-head coach, Dick Vermeil joins myself and Marnie in the huddle to discuss his championship winning ways. An honest man who is not afraid to be himself.  Marnie's Grandfather hired Coach Vermeil to change the culture in Philadelphia. He helped the Eagles reach new heights and still lives near Philadelphia to this day.   https://pro-football-history.com/coach/429/dick-vermeil-bio   Calistoga’s native son, Dick Vermeil (aka Coach), had a singular passion for two things in his life – football and wine. He decided early on to pursue football first, getting his start as an assistant coach right out of college and beginning a professional career that would span decades. A mechanics son, he inherited his father’s relentless work ethic and was known for his tough-as-nails practices and for regularly saying “No one ever drowned in sweat.”  But he was also known for his emotional and inspirational coaching style as well as the willingness to approach seemingly insurmountable challenges head on. As head coach of UCLA, he led the underdog Bruins to a Rose Bowl win over the undefeated and number one ranked Ohio State Buckeyes in 1975; as the head coach of the long-suffering Philadelphia Eagles, he led them to their first Superbowl appearance in franchise history in 1980; and as the head coach of the St. Louis Rams, he led them to a stunning turnaround season and Superbowl XXXIV win in January 2000. Coach’s last professional coaching job was as the head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs who he coached for five seasons; leading them to the AFC West Championship in 2003. Retiring from professional coaching for good in 2005 and, with a little help from some friends, Coach began the next and current chapter of his life; actively pursuing his second passion -  making wine. https://www.vermeilwines.com/Team     See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In today’s edition of the podcast Wisconsin Strength Coach Erik Helland sits down and discusses training and how it has evolved through his career. We start talking about his time in Chicago and how working with Coach Vermeil has shaped him as a coach. We then talk about the role of player prep vs player monitoring and how they may be working against each other instead of in conjunction with each other. He then shares with us the primary differences and similarities seen working in the NBA and NCAA when it comes to handling basketball players, and how his flexibility with programming has evolved over his career. Next we touch upon how he handles his athlete’s from first stepping on campus to the vets they have at UW from evaluations, to progressions in training, to individualization, and where the ideas and modifications to his evaluations came from and how those drive the program to ensure that quality is the number one driver of training. We finish out discussing the importance of team building and internal leadership by the players to the team and individual athlete’s success, and the importance of the mentors coaches have along the way and how important those relationships are.
