Some of college football's biggest and most influential teams and universities have decided to leave their longtime athletic conferences. For example, UCLA and USC - members of the PAC-12 Conference for decades are now a part of the BIG 10 Conference. To the non-sports fan, that doesn't sound like much. However, the ripple effects of such moves are gigantic. While some universities have already joined new conferences, others continue to seek new affiliations. Why? Television and money. Brian Mann is the Director of Athletics at William & Mary; he previously served as Senior Associate Athletics Director at the University of California Berkeley, a university at the time we recorded the podcast in search of a new conference. Dr. Kevin Blue, former Athletics Director at University of California-Davis, a Senior Associate Athletics Director at Stanford University, and now the Chief Sport Officer of Golf Canada. Kevin has written quite a bit about the intersection of higher ed and college athletics, mixing in his financial acumen as well as a doctorate in sport psychology. His commentary is always thought provoking, and included in his writing have been a few case studies that challenge college administrator's thinking when confronted with difficult personnel situations. Athletic Director U has called Kevin "The Millennial AD". We discuss his suggestions for reigning in college sports spending and the real challenge that so many institutions are facing today when assessing students fees for their Division I athletics programs. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/karen-weaver/message

Colin Hargis is the Senior Associate Athletics Director for Marketing and Ticket Services at NC State. Listen to him talk about his career path, his favorite parts about college athletics, mobile ticketing, NIL, and more.
For years, student athletes competing at colleges and universities governed by the NCAA were considered to be “amateur athletes.” That amateur status meant they were prohibited from making money using their name, image, and likeness. Well that changed recently thanks to the NCAA's Name Image and Likeness policy, known as the NIL Policy. Now, any person, business, or organization can pay a college athlete fair market value to endorse or represent them. For example, athletes can now be paid for personal appearances or for mentioning a business on their social media feeds. In the weeks since the new policy went into effect, stories of athletes signing deals have popped up all across the country. Two leaders in William & Mary's athletic department join us today to discuss the changes. Jeremy Martin spent the last 10 months as Interim Athletics Director. Kevin Dwan is Senior Associate Athletics Director for External Operations for Revenue Generation and Brand Management. They join us to discuss NIL, what it all means, and what lies ahead. Today’s episode is a little different than usual. This episode is the edited audio from one of our Fireside Chats, something that our invite-only community has access too. Our subject matter experts for the chat were Brad Wurthman, Senior Associate Athletics Director for External Operations at Virginia Tech and Chris Grosse, Assistant Athletics Director for Marketing at Penn State University. Brad and Chris both lead teams responsible for the fan experiences at their famous sporting venues. On a normal football Saturday, their 65k+ stadiums literally shake the ground from screaming fans. But this year, neither stadium will host fans due to the pandemic. So we brought them in to discuss their plans for engaging fans virtually. In these Fireside Chats, it’s not just me and the guests. There are tons of other leaders on the platform, where they can chime in, ask questions or add their two cents. So when you hear other voices on this episode, don’t be surprised. “Context has been lost in several areas in our profession.” What’s up everybody and welcome the 26th episode of Outside The Rack brought to you by Kinetic Performance the makers of Gymaware. In this show we are going to try to dive a little deeper into the minds of the top practitioners in the world of sport performance to learn a bit more about who they actually are and how they got to where they are at today. Before we start, who is Bob Alejo? I’m a veteran strength and conditioning practitioner, who is looking for the best ways to provide the best experience for the athletes we get to work with. 1) Describe a learning situation that brought about an epiphany in your career There’s actually 2. The first was seeing Al Vermeil coach in the early 80’s and watching him coach. The second was in 2005 working with the track team at UC Santa Barbra watching a squat assessment taught him not everyone feels and enjoys training like we do. 2) If you could ask one questions and you know you would get the answer what would that be and why? “When are you perfectly ready to train again?” 3) What’s your escape? I’ve been called a workaholic but I really find relaxation in reading research and talking shop. Otherwise I really enjoy fly fishing, and music and movies. But I wouldn’t call them escapes, that’s my life. We are hoping to provide the best possible content for strength coaches with each of our shows.
