What is a Trigger Point: A susceptible spot that, when touched, causes considerable pain that totally or partly coincides with pain in a specific muscle or group of muscles that are in dysfunction.  Most trigger points can be located by slightly stretching the muscle causing the pain. The spot where you feel a pull or tightness while doing a simple stretch is usually the location of the trigger point.  Treatment For Trigger Points: Locate the tender muscle band by gently rubbing your fingers across the muscle fibers, searching for a tender spot. It can be anywhere from the size of a BB to the size of a bean and press! Some muscles may need to be squeezed in addition to or instead of being pressed. You can rub the muscle between your thumb and fingers to find the tender point.  Treatment Time For Trigger Points: Treatment time is short, no more than 1-2 min. Longer times can lead to increased inflammation and bruising, resulting in more pain and longer treatment times.      Health Chatt with Dr. Nicholas J. Circolone. Edge Productions Cohost: Angela Edge Editor: Flint Woods Cannabis Pairing: Cannabis Expert MD, Dr Brian Nichol Special Guest: Sheila Berger Sheila Berger is a Certified Consulting Hypnotist and Licensed Massage Therapist. She is the founder of 321 Hypnosis and Massage Center. She specializes in Hypnosis, Massage, Havening, NLP, Sound Healing, and Intuitive Card Readings. Sheila began her journey in 1996, studying to become a Massage Therapist. I do feel my journey began well before that time in 1996. When I was younger, I had headaches. My mom's gentle touch and caring nature showed me how to be nurturing. She was a gentle healer in her own right. In the short time, I had with my mom, she taught me faith, understanding, compassion, empathy, caring, and to be in service for a higher purpose. MASSAGE THERAPY: Sheila began her journey in 1996 on her way to becoming a Massage Therapist. She started her journey in Massachusetts and moved to Florida for her Massage certification. In 1996 Sheila originally had sciatica discomfort, and she sought out massage therapy to relieve the discomfort. It propelled Sheila on her course of action as a massage therapist. She also remembered someone praising her kindness in church as we also washed each other's feet. All synchronistic events led her to be a massage therapist. As Sheila was searching for massage schools, she remembered the therapist who helped her and the church woman who praised her. She decided to head to Florida. She is grateful for the knowledge and foundation Sarasota School of Massage taught her! Sheila practices Swedish, Deep Tissue, Trigger Point Therapy, and Cupping. HYPNOSIS: In 2017, Sheila studied Hypnosis certification program with the NGH (National Guild of Hypnotists). I feel blessed by the clients that come to me for help. I feel a great sense of accomplishment helping others make significant changes in their lives. I assist with the challenges of Weight Loss, Stop Smoking, Confidence, Breaking a Habit, Test Taking, Athletic Performance and More. NLP: In 2021 received my Master NLP Practitioner training. NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) is the study of language patterns and how we communicate with one another in the representation of our language patterns and the programs we have installed from birth to adulthood. It's a system in which we utilize a particular pattern. NLP is about forwarding movement into empowerment. HAVENING: In 2021, Sheila devoted time to a Havening certification class. Havening helps release the emotions that come up due to a car accident, or dog bites, just to name a few, and to also builds better resilience. It is sensory-based and can be performed by yourself, which is great for doing it over zoom, or a practitioner may facilitate the havening session when the person is in the same room. Intuitive Card Readings: Sheila listens to her guides, and when she receives the messages, she advises the person on what the words are. I can also get people that have passed if you are looking for some peace around their passing.

In this week's episode of the Spine & Nerve podcast Drs. Nicolas Karvelas and Brian Joves conclude the discussion regarding Myofascial Pain Syndromes through a case presentation. The doctors present a common clinical scenario where myofascial pain is causing significant negative impact on a patient's function, quality of life, and health. In the prior background and journal club episodes, the pathophysiology of myofascial pain was discussed in detail (see https://anchor.fm/spine/episodes/Back-to-Basics-Myofascial-Pain-Syndrome-eq461q and https://anchor.fm/spine/episodes/Journal-Club-Neuroinflammation-in-Myofascial-Pain-Disorders-eqlc5l). This episode’s discussion brings things a little more clinical than the prior two. The doctors present a clinical picture of a young woman with chronic neck pain. Listen as they walk through the process of identifying pathology and initiating a treatment protocol that focuses on physical modalities, topical ointments and trigger point therapy. Relax & Rejuvenate in Bayfield County No matter what time of year, Bayfield County is a great place to relax, rejuvenate and reconnect with nature. On this episode, Mary Motiff talks about what makes Bayfield County a great place to get away from it all. Half a million acres of public land offer an abundance of ways to recreate outdoors in some of the most beautiful and scenic parts of the state. There are lots of opportunities to be on or near the water either on the big lake, Lake Superior, or at any of the County’s hundreds of inland lakes and rivers. Of course, the experience is also enhanced by the low traffic and lack of noise, according to Mary.   A Superior Spa Experience One of Bayfield County’s favorite relaxation destinations is Superior Body Massage & Spa in Bayfield. Mary talks to the owner, Anna Johnson, about their popular spa services and ambiance. Anna was born and raised here, but left the area for school and work. Coming back to open her spa in 2006 was a dream come true. Located close to the lake, Superior Body Massage incorporates the colors of the lake and landscapes, water features, music, lighting and lovely scents to create a relaxing and rejuvenating ambiance. The services include Swedish massage and therapeutic massage techniques like Myofacial Release, Trigger Point Therapy, Hot Stone, Prenatal and Couples Massage, as well as comprehensive skin care services, manicures and pedicures, a private infrared sauna and vibrational sound therapy, which is relatively new to the region. The spa has dual licenses in both massage therapy and skincare aesthetics. The spa can combine both modalities to offer unique, two-hour services called “Blissful Body Treatment” and “Paradise Perhaps,” which incorporates the steam canopy tent with a full- body scrub and mask. In addition, Superior Body Massage & Spa collaborates with area lodging and recreational locations to offer special packages for visitors who want to relax after an exciting day on the trails or water and for group events that want to include a spa day. Anna’s highly educated and licensed staff have received a 5-star rating from Trip Advisor and has lots of great reviews. The spa has also been nominated twice for the Luxury Travel Award. Reservations are recommended; however Anna says that depending on staffing you can always check to see if there are same-day availabilities. Booking appointments online are the easiest and most convenient way to make a reservation, but you can also call or email. The holidays are here! We’ll help you get through them with holiday health hacks from Suzy Hardy, Laura Powers and Allison Melody! Have you tried CBD? Suzy’s company, CBD Fountain, makes quality Hemp CBD products to help you and your family achieve optimal health and well being. CBD Fountain was born when founder, Suzy Hardy created the body lotion for her own back pain. After trying another CBD topical that was expensive, smelled bad and didn’t work very well, Suzy got some Hemp CBD oil and created a body lotion that she would want to buy as a customer. It relieved her pain! She gave it to friends and family with different issues, from carpal tunnel to torn meniscus to bulging discs and they felt relief too! A business was born and each product has a story behind it.  Check out all her magical products at CBDfountain.com and use the discount code foodheals to receive 20% off your order! “There were never so many able, active minds at work on the problems of disease as now, and all their discoveries are tending toward the simple truth that you can’t improve on nature.” –Thomas Edison Next up, Laura Powers joins Suzy and Alli to discuss their top 2019 health hacks! Here are the highlights:   Do a Parasite Cleanse! Bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites — there are many types of harmful organisms and nearly everyone is affected at some point in their life. Harmful organisms are ones that live off another by living on or in them. Essentially, the harmful organism takes up residence in the host. In this relationship, harmful organisms steal nutrients and release waste to negatively affect the overall health of the host wreaking havoc on our microbiome. Get your gut in check by doing a parasite cleanse! Laura recommends: Microbe FormulasAlli recommends: Paratrex(Use the coupon code foodheals to get 20% off Paratrex)   Cleanse with Clay! Diatomaceous earth is a naturally-formed sedimentary mineral rock. It's derived from the remains of diatoms, or oceanic unicellular algae. [1] Diatoms are over 30 million years old and are formed from the cementation of microscopic algae-like plant remains into the earth's surface. These clay-like, chalky remains are usually found in the form of a thick, white, siliceous powder known as diatomaceous earth. [2] Often used to support body cleansing, some research also suggests it's a natural tool for promoting normal blood lipids, detoxing toxic metals, and fighting harmful intestinal organisms. Alli recommends Earthborn Elements supplements for internal cleansing and Pure Organic Ingredients Diatomaceous earth for cleansing your home.    Sweat it Out! Infrared saunas use infrared lamps (that use electromagnetic radiation) to warm your body directly. “These saunas use infrared panels instead of conventional heat to easily penetrate human tissue, heating up your body before heating up the air,” explains physical therapist, Vivian Eisenstadt, MAPT, CPT, MASP. Infrared is so safe it is regularly used in hospitals to keep newborn babies warm. Infrared and infrared saunas have been researched and studied for decades. Doctors, chiropractors and physical therapists use infrared every day in clinics and hospitals around the world to ameliorate pain, heal skin conditions, increase flexibility and generally help heal the body. Alli recommends this Serene Life Portable Spa Laura recommends the Uttiny Far Infrared Sauna Blanket   Release with Trigger Point Therapy! We all have stress. And when we put stress on a muscle, it can cause that muscle to tighten. And even after the stress is gone, that muscle tightness can remain. Many health issues and pain stem from this muscular stress, and that’s where trigger point therapy comes in! Depending on where your pain is, determines which trigger point needs to be addressed. You can use the Trigger Point Therapy Workbook to walk you through the process of how to massage the correct trigger points to find relief. Laura recommends the Trigger Point Therapy Workbook Heal with Cryotherapy! Cryotherapy sounds scary, but it’s not! For those of us fortunate to maintain a lavish western lifestyle it can be hard to imagine what the fitness scene might look like in countries like Thailand, India, Philippines or Oman; however, fitness is international and no matter where you go in the world there are modern health clubs with 21st century fitness equipment. As the economies of countries modernize, it’s creating new opportunities for the growth of the fitness industry. As workers move to higher-paying jobs they can afford many “luxuries” of modern living like fast food, smart phones and video games, as a result, the populations of these countries are experiencing a number of health issues related to a sedentary lifestyle that could affect the long term economic viability of each country. The upside its that these easily preventable health issues are creating new opportunities for the international growth of the fitness industry as many countries turn to exercise to help fight lifestyle-related chronic diseases. Fortunately, all around the world health clubs are opening in an effort to help people stay healthy through exercise and no where is this growth more explosive than the Asian market. As health clubs open and sign up new members this is creating an international demand for educated personal trainers. On this episode of All About Fitness, recorded live from the IDEA Conference in Shanghai, China, Marc Coronel, an international educator for fitness products like TRX and Trigger Point Therapy and Brian Bettendorf, an international business consultant specializing in fitness equipment, discuss the international growth of the fitness industry and whether personal trainers in Asia are better educated than those in the states (you'll have to listen to find out whether or not they are). We are talking about the controversial topic of whether Manual Therapy for trigger point should be used for the alleviation or the treatment of chronic pain. How is one physiotherapist doing some interesting work to help people taper off of opioid medications using psychologically-informed physical therapy principles? My guest is Diarmuid Denneny. He is a professional lead physiotherapist at the Pain Management Center at the University of College London Hospital’s NHS Foundation Trust. He has worked in a specialized pain management center for several years and is clinically advanced as a physiotherapist as well as an independent prescriber. In addition to his clinical and managerial work, Diarmuid is the Chair of the Physiotherapy Pain Association and a member of the Guidelines Development Committee for the NICE Chronic Pain Guidelines. He was awarded an NIHR Pre-doctoral Fellowship in 2017 and 2018. He is interested in the development of clinical academic roles for physiotherapists. He also has a particular interest in the psychologically informed practice and the role of physiotherapists in supporting people who have pain and medication-related issues. Diarmuid has published peer-reviewed articles relating to physical therapy practice in pain management, including a systematic review of trigger point Manual Therapy, which we’ll talk about on this episode, as well as the behaviors of experienced physical therapists working within a psychologically informed model. We cover a lot of ground on this episode where we discuss psychologically informed care, Manual Therapy and Trigger Point Therapy as it relates to the management of chronic pain, as well as a physiotherapist role in helping people taper off of opioids. I know you’re going to enjoy this episode. Help me welcome Diarmuid to the podcast. Sign up for the latest episode at www.integrativepainscienceinstitute.com/podcasts/. Love the show? Being a mom, wife, and business owner, she understands the demands our lives make that can interfere with our health and fitness. Her passion is making fitness realistic and accessible for anyone – no matter what challenges they might face. She believes that one must have a strong mental, spiritual and physical “core” for true fitness success. It is this holistic focus that truly sets Kolleen, her team and CORE fitness apart from other gyms. TOPICS MENTIONED: Corrective exercise Core Confidence One body THOUGHTS FROM KOLLEEN: There are more people that want to be educated about their bodies than just being beautiful on the outside. You can’t build a house on a weak foundation.  You can’t build a body on a weak foundation.  Trainers really need to have the correct tools in their toolbox to help their clients. As a society, we have to “straighten” up. We were meant to be movers. How often do you move your body throughout the day? We take better care of our houses better than we do our bodies. The way you eat is the way you feel. Lack of movement is the new cigarette. We have to retrain ourselves to breathe. We do not want to be dead when we reach the prosperous place. Core Beliefs: A properly contracting muscular system is vital to optimal health. Optimal contraction is vital to a properly functioning muscular system. Having a systematic approach to assessing proper contraction is vital to improving this function. Without proper function the system will eventually break down and participation will become less and less efficient leading to less than optimal health. Maintaining this system over time is vital to long term health gains. Proper progression over time is vital to reaching the systems optimal potential. Education of the inner working of the system is vital honoring how to progress this system. Education is vital to understanding how to maintain this system overtime. A solid understanding of physics is vital to understanding how force affects the system. Properly applying forces is vital to achieving, progressing and maintaining a healthy muscular system. In this episode, I share an intimate and enriching conversation with a dear friend, Rachael Huttner, who is Thai Body Worker and Reiki Practitioner. Rachael and I talk about how basketball inspired her Thai Body Work, the importance of tribe and teamwork, how to be in touch with synchronicity, and nurturing and valuing intuition and spirit guides. Rachael's bodywork practice draws from her studies in Reiki, Thai Bodywork, Trigger Point Therapy, Chinese Medicine and her latest introduction to Shamanic studies. Two components ultimately lay the foundation for the effectiveness of these modalities: making energy and spiritual work approachable to everyone, and creating a collaborative environment. She considers the best teachers and practitioners to be the ones that you need to see less and less as time goes on because they give you the tools needed to draw from your own inner knowledge for health and well-being. Having spent over a decade recovering from a surgery and back injury in her teens and 20s, Rachael discovered that lasting healing truly begins once you address the emotional, mental, and spiritual components. Rachael saw countless doctors and specialists and became very frustrated with the brief visits, multiple diagnoses, and feeling of helplessness over the decline in her quality of well-being. Thankfully, she was young and stubborn at the time and promised herself that she would find a way to heal that was less confusing and invasive. This desire carried her to a community acupuncture clinic in her late 20s. There, she felt deep compassion from her practitioner, she felt heard and was truly supported for the first time on her quest towards a pain-free life. What an empowering approach! This was the turning point in Rachael's journey of healing. Rachael continued to receive care from some holistic practitioners, and each contributed in their own way towards lasting healing and full recovery (in a mere two years). The lessons she learned from this journey have left their imprint on Rachael's vision for her bodywork sessions. She attunes herself to her client's goals and works with the relevant information that presents itself during a session. She also encourages her clients to listen to sensations and emotions following a session, as this not only prolongs the benefits of bodywork and Reiki but also empowers them to develop true autonomy over their bodies and well-being. Rachael is sincerely grateful to everyone that helped her as she healed and embarked on this mission to have her own bodywork practice. Compassion, patience, and encouragement were the special ingredients expressed by loved ones. Rachael carries this support in her heart each day with the sincere wish to share these gifts with others.   Links, Article, and Resources All Show Notes for This Episode

Trigger Point Self-Treatment System from Healthy Back Institute's Jesse Cannone & Steve Hefferon: In treating your own Trigger Points with the Healthy Back Institute's Trigger Point Self-Treatment System, warns Steve Hefferon, one must be care of multiplying trigger points. This can also happen in deep tissue massage, which can bring out long dormant trigger points or create new ones from working on others. But if you can't afford to hire a trigger point specialist or just don't want to have someone else handling that, Jesse Cannone believes their system is very much up to the task of working your trigger points when you are in relaxed position, which is key to the process. About Trigger Points: Trigger points cause muscles and tissues to tighten and shorten. These hyper-irritated hardened masses cause so much pain and tenderness that you alter the way you move, sit or stand to instinctively protect yourself. By limiting the use of the painful muscle, the muscle begins to weaken. Your altered patterns of movement put abnormal stress on your muscles, ligaments and joints. This leads to strength and flexibility imbalances in your muscles as well as postural dysfunctions throughout your body. This "use-abuse-disuse" scenario creates more trigger points in other areas and a vicious cycle begins. Before you know it, you’ve developed clusters of active and latent trigger points. You’ve also given up doing the things you love to do because it simply hurts too much. Here at the Healthy Back Institute, we've always known trigger points are a huge factor in creating pain and tenderness. However, there are very few qualified and trained trigger point therapists out there. And although there are some good self-treatment books available, most leave a lot for the patient to "figure out" on their own. Through her work with President Kennedy and many, many other back pain sufferers, Dr. Travell discovered that deep manual pressure applied to trigger points had a dramatic therapeutic effect by quickly eliminating pain. The work she developed with her colleagues evolved into what is known today as Trigger Point Therapy. Research shows that sustained manual trigger point therapy is by far the most effective means of getting rid of chronic myofascial (muscle and tissue) pain. But trotting off to a doctor, massage therapist, physical therapist, chiropractor or other clinician repeatedly to get rid of all your trigger points can get pretty expensive. Not to mention all the time those visits consume. And that’s if you are lucky enough to find a well-trained trigger point specialist to begin with. That's why we are excited to offer you the Trigger Point Self-Treatment System. In fact, I can guarantee it's the most effective and easy to use self-care system around. http://www.losethebackpain.com/triggerpiontselftreatment.html
