There's some very cool colour schemes in this part of the codex, you should look them up. Like my readings of GW literature? Why not do me a favour and post on the Black Library Facebook page and tell them you want me to narrate one of their audiobooks? That would make my week to be honest. Johnny Fraser-Allen in conversation with Jordan Sorcery. After working as a conceptual and special effects artist at Weta Workshop on films like Steven Spielberg's BFG, Guillermo Del Toro and then Peter Jackson's the Hobbit movies, and James Cameron's Avatar Johnny Fraser-Allen began making miniatures for gaming in the fantasy realms he loves so much.Working with Alessio Cavatore & Riverhorse Games Johnny designed the miniatures for the boardgame adaptations of Jim Henson's Labyrinth and Dark Crystal. As a lifelong Warhammer fan his work has been featured on Warhammer Community, and his incredible creations have regularly appeared on Adam Savage's Tested. And all of that is before the creation of his 20-year-in-the-making magical world of The Gloaming. A folktale and fae inspired fantasy world drawing on European and Antipodean myths & legends, filled with incredible creatures, and perhaps one of the most immersive game settings ever devised. A full-size tour of The Gloaming has been produced by Weta with narration by Stephen Fry, and Johnny has been working on a series of campaigns to release 28mm scale miniatures and printable STLs for the denizens of this otherworldly place.Support my work:Patreon [https://www.patreon.com/jordansorcery]Element Games Affiliate Link [https://elementgames.co.uk/?d=11216]Download my Fantasy Battle Scenario: Dead King Wenceslas [https://jordansorcery.itch.io/dead-king-wenceslas]Ko-Fi [https://ko-fi.com/jordansorcery]Discord [https://discord.gg/vtjKzTGevD]This episode was originally released via YouTube: https://youtu.be/iVcVl3uidWM

Alessio Cavatore in conversation with Jordan Sorcery.Alessio has designed countless games in his remarkable tabletop career. At Games Workshop he worked on a host of Armies Books before taking over as design lead for Lord of the Rings: Strategy Battle Game, Warhammer Fantasy Battles, and Warhammer 40,000.Since leaving Games Workshop Alessio has contributed extensively to games like Bolt Action from Warlord Games and Kings of War from Mantic. He has also founded his own company, River Horse Games, to develop board game adaptations of classic movies like Labyrinth, Highlander, and the Hunger Games. We talk about his game design philosophy, the culture and changes at Games Workshop over the years, and reflections working on some of the most important games in tabletop history.Support my work:Patreon [https://www.patreon.com/jordansorcery]Element Games Affiliate Link [https://elementgames.co.uk/?d=11216]Download my Fantasy Battle Scenario: Dead King Wenceslas [https://jordansorcery.itch.io/dead-king-wenceslas]Ko-Fi [https://ko-fi.com/jordansorcery]Discord [https://discord.gg/vtjKzTGevD]This episode was originally released via YouTube: https://youtu.be/5ZqlaS-xQaA

With the obvious exception of Games Workshop stuff from the mid-90s, Joe McCullough's games probably get more coverage on the Tabletop Miniature Hobby Podcast than any other. Fortunately, Joe's a lovely guy as well as a brilliant games designer, and has been gracious enough to guest on the show not once, not twice, but three times!Joe McCullough on creativity, inspiration, and gnolls (March 2022)Frostgrave, Stargrave, Silver Bayonet, and the Worlds of Joe McCullough (Sept 2021)In our January 2024 round, we've some new releases to catch up on, including Frostgrave: Fireheart, Old Bones, and Rangers of Shadow Deep: Tenebrous Citadel. On top of that, there are some listener questions and a few of the recurring ones I've been asking other rules writers. On that last note, I've also started to compile answers to the “favourite game mechanics” question into one blog post, too. You'll also find answers there from Gav Thorpe, Andy Chambers, Tuomas Pirinen, Jervis Johnson, and Alessio Cavatore.

There are few names as respected and influential in this hobby as Alessio Cavatore. Known for his work on iconic games like Warhammer 40k, Bolt Action, and Kings of War, Cavatore has left an indelible mark on the hobby. However, what sets him apart isn't just the games he's worked on, but his philosophy that rulesets can be smaller and simpler, and that big, heavy rulebooks don't necessarily make for better games.Just like our episodes with fellow industry legends Gav Thorpe, Andy Chambers, and Tuomas Pirinen, Alessio will be asking the same lineup of recurring questions. These throw up some interesting angles, including:The fact that he doesn't paint miniaturesHis surprise at GW blowing up The Old WorldHis new-found appreciation for K-Pop
This week the Tommies discuss their experiences at the Warlord's Open Day and Welsh Open Bolt Action tournament. They'll discuss the highs and lows of both events, and the joy of meeting such legends as Alessio Cavatore and Mark Vance, and Phil demonstrates his knowledge of fine cuisine. This week I speak to Leandros of Parabellum Wargames. Parabellum recently fully released their tabletop fantasy game Conquest, The Last Argument of Kings. I mention this throughout the show but one of the overriding features of this tabletop massed battle game is how developed it appears to be on its initial release. Also which is really refreshing is that they went straight to market and did not crowd fund. There is nothing wrong with crowd funding per say but it is refreshing to see a game eschew this and go through more traditional methods. Alessio Cavatore of River Horse is the chief rules writer and in a pretty competitive market there are enough things in the game to make it stand out. We aren’t salesmen and we aren’t looking to influence you in either direction but if you like the sound of what you hear then you can head on over to parabellum.com and have a mooch around. I personally really enjoy their art work and the fact that Alessio created it makes me take note as I enjoy his sophistication through simplicity approach. It was great spending an hour with Leandros and we wish both him and Parabellum all the best in the future. We hope you enjoy the show. https://www.para-bellum.com
This week I talk once again to Alessio Cavatore of River Horse Games. I spoke to Alessio back in episode 51 so if you want more info on his personal history then go and check that out. In this episode we talk about what he has been up to since our last chat, we poke about the diverse set of games and activities he has been up to with some huge and well known IP’s, and we also talk about what he thinks makes a good game. I am really enjoying revisiting previous podcast guests and asking them what they think makes a good game. Both Lardy Rich and Joseph McCollough have been on recently with their opinions and it has been so interesting to hear their opinions. From reenacting historical scenarios, to narratives, to sophistication though simplicity of rule set. Its always fun talking to Alessio and I hope you enjoy the show!
