Recently, Environment and Climate Change Canada delivered its summer seasonal forecast. It looks like things will be hot, or at least most of the country will experience above average temperatures. These temperatures will mostly be seen in the North, across most of Ontario, Quebec and the Atlantic Provinces. While we don't know things like how many heat waves we'll face or how high those temperatures will be, it's certain that it will all be more than normal. Even now, as summer begins officially, parts of the country are sweltering.Stephen Cheung is a professor and senior research fellow in the department of kinesiology at Brock University in St. Catharines, Ont. He has studied the effects of environmental stress (which includes heat) on human physiology and performance. For the 2016 world championships, he helped U.S. cyclist Amber Neben to adapt to the heat she'd face in Doha, Qatar. She won gold in the time trial that year.Cheung is a rider, too, and has contributed to Canadian Cycling Magazine with various articles throughout the years. In this episode of the Canadian Cycling Magazine Podcast, he helps you understand heat and its effects on your rides, and what you can do about it. He discusses how your body can adapt, how much to drink, the role of sweat and what to wear. And don't forget your sunscreen. This episode of the Canadian Cycling Magazine Podcast is supported by MS Bike. Register and start fundraising at msbike.ca. The topic of athlete mental health has become the biggest talking point of these Olympics. How do top athletes manage the pressures on them to perform, and do fans and media put too much weight on wins and losses? On today's podcast we examine this conversation. We also break down the U.S. women's Team Pursuit, which rode to the bronze medal this week. It's just the second medal for Team USA at these Olympics, and far fewer than the seven medals that USA Cycling said it was targeting this year. We examine this delta between Team USA's ambitions, and the reality of these games. Then, Olympians Amber Neben and Haley Batten join the podcast to take us inside the women's individual time trial and cross-country mountain bike events. Neben was fifth place in the ITT, just barely missing out on a medal. She examines her ride and gives us some behind-the-scenes perspective on her experience in Tokyo. Batten finished ninth in the XC race, and shares some perspective on how she managed the external and internal pressures to perform in the biggest race of her career. This week's episode is brought to you by Travel Texas, which reminds you that Texas is home to some of the best bike racing and bike riding in the U.S.

When you get a three time world champion and her world class coach on the same podcast, there's a whole lot of wisdom and expertise that arises. Enter Amber Neben and Tim Cusick. Amber Neben is no stranger to cycling. With two world time trial championship gold medals to her name and one team time trial world championship title, plus over 70 career wins, including several national road and time trial titles and being a 2x Olympian, she has more than a little experience to share with us today, and it shines through. Does she use a lot of technology? How have her rest days changed over the years? What does she think most cyclist could work on to maximize their time on and off the bike? I wanted to know, so I asked! Tim Cusick arrives at the mic with a long history of coaching experience. Tim is the Product Leader for Training Peaks and WKO, the head coach of Velocious Cycling Adventures and Joinbasecamp.com. He also happens to be Amber Neben's coach, along with several other professional cyclists. It's safe to say Tim knows a thing or three about building a progressive training strategy. I made sure we got clear on what elements need to go into a good strategy and how both athletes and coaches can make sure they're building progress into training cycles while avoiding non functional overreaching and balancing athlete freshness and fitness. He also shares his opinion on HRV, technology, and coach athlete communication, which I believed was one of the most poignant parts of our discussion. Today you'll learn about: Building a training strategy and rhythm How to build and measure progress Non functional vs functional over reaching Why rest is the overlooked yet KEY to progress Athlete signs of Non functional overreaching Common barriers that impede progress for many cyclists HRV - what is it, are they using it? Why? Why not? The power of coach athlete communication Are we losing something amidst all the "data?" Mindset and how it can shape your success Thoughts on overcoming adversity from both Tim and Amber If you want to learn more from Tim or Amber, please visit the links below and follow them on social media. 119: How to use data to make better training decisions, with Tim Cusick

Fast Talk

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 9, 2020 108:54

Today we’re taking a good long look at training metrics. We’ve released previous episodes on how to use different numbers, what many of them mean, and how they’re calculated. Today, we tie it together into one package, with a master of data analytics, Tim Cusick, who is not only the product leader for TrainingPeaks’ WKO platform, but also an elite cycling coach of athletes including Amber Neben and Rebecca Rusch.  As Tim likes to say, if each ride you do is a single note, to get the most out of your training, you want to string those rides together in the most elegant way. That is, you want to make music. I love that analogy for the art of training and coaching.  To set the stage for our conversation, it’s helpful to understand that even a data aficionado like Tim fully understands that metrics are not the be-all-end-all—the power of numbers is in their ability to effectively inform the decision-making process. Athletes and coaches should use data to learn more about how best to train, but the data cannot be the solution unto itself.   It’s also helpful to define some terminology. Most of you will have heard of stress, or external load; then there’s strain, the internal load applied to a system; and finally TSS, or training stress score, which we will define and dissect. Likewise, you’re likely familiar with the PMC in TrainingPeaks. The performance management chart shows trends in your season. Finally, Tim often mentions the “content” of the work used to generate these different metrics. What he means by that is the composition of the training rides, whether they’re intense or easy, long or hard, and so forth.   To tie it all together, today’s episode is about utilizing a training philosophy to design the right type of workouts—the content—then using the metrics as a guide to inform how much, how often, and how difficult those rides should be. Voila, you’ve got some Mozart, hopefully. Maybe if you’re Trevor is more like Celine Dion or Shania Twain. (They’re Canadian)  On the program today, we also hear from a host of other prominent figures about how they use, or don’t use, all the metrics we have available today. Guests include physiologist Jared Berg, pro mountain biker Payson McElveen, the legend himself Ned Overend, WorldTour veteran Brent Bookwalter, and Xert creator Armando Mastracci.  Time to crunch some numbers, and fill out the all-important comments field. Let's make you fast!

Athletes all over the world are facing uncertainty about when the next competition is and where their focus should be right now. Although athletes tend to be resilient and forward thinking, these times present athletes with a unique stress, compared to the almost expected ‘forks in the road' that they contend with regularly. A good coach helps us navigate our way through difficult situations and helps us to adjust and refocus. Through experience, foresight and the ability to remain calm, a great coach can be an athlete's best asset. I met Tim Cusick a decade ago, while working as a sports nutritionist at a cycling camp in Pennsylvania. Tim is the ultimate professional and a man of true integrity. He's definitely the coach I'd want in my corner if I was competing today. Tim embodies a wealth of knowledge about cycling and data analytics. Additionally, Tim's life experiences have culminated in his forward thinking, focused and calm in the eye of a storm type personality. Tim has evolved into one of the world's top cycling coaches, is the founder and head coach of of Velocious Cycling along side partner Kathy, and works as the ‘WKO Product Lead' at Training Peaks. As a coach, Tim is focused on supporting female athletes. Through his experience he has learned of the disparity of women in sport and it has become of passion of his to be a part of the change by providing more opportunity for female athletes to succeed. Currently Tim coaches world class athletes including Amber Neben, Rebecca Rusch and Emma Grant. I'm excited to share this conversation with Tim today. Tim shares some candid answers about how to manage training during these uncertain times. He shares some incredible insights into how some of the best athletes in the world are looking into the horizon and working on “succeeding” every day as both athletes and human beings. I hope this conversation somehow resonates with you and propels you to look forward as an athlete, while inspiring you to work on challenges that keep you moving in the days and months ahead. Some of the things you can look forward to hearing about during our conversation include but are not limited to: Working on succeeding and what that looks like for you Looking ahead to the horizon – thinking of a multi year plan Coaches don't motivate you but here's what they can do Creating a challenge for yourself What Tim thinks about “maintenance mode” right now Using the indoor trainer as a “tool.” Specificity of training Working on mental strengths Heat adaptation You can conect with Tim through any of the following links: Velocious Cycling: www.velociouscyclingadventures.com (Training Peaks) https://www.trainingpeaks.com/wko5/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/TimCusick123 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tim_cusick_coach/ Instagram (VelociousCycling): https://www.instagram.com/velociouscyclingadventures/ Thank you Tim! 44: The data revolution — how A.I. and machine learning will make you faster

This episode is all about data. Not long ago, people looked at you funny if you had a two-inch screen mounted to your handlebars. Now, we ride with head units the size of iPhones, sensors connected to our limbs, and wearables that track our every step and heartbeat. No one bats an eyelash. A few episodes ago, we talked with Hunter Allen about the history of power and how we got to this point. Today we ask this question: Where is all of this data going, and what do we gain by covering our bodies in sensors like something out of a Star Trek Borg episode? In this episode, we’ll first discuss the data revolution. There’s been exponential growth in the amount of information we’re now able to collect and analyze. That data is allowing us to analyze our training in ways we never could before, but it also comes with some dangers. Next, we’ll discuss the rise of artificial intelligence and machine learning in training software. That’s a fancy way of saying that the software no longer just tells you how far you rode and what your average power was. Increasingly, it is telling you what your rides mean, where your form is at, and gives clues to what you should be doing. Then we’ll address the three stages toward machine learning. First, there is the descriptive: how far you rode, how many hours you’ve trained this month, and so forth. The second, where we are now, is predictive: software crunches your data to predict what’s going to happen to your form. Finally, in a few years, we hope to move into the prescriptive stage where the software starts telling us what we should do. Finally, since these changes are going to have a significant impact on athletes and coaches, we address what each can expect. Should coaches start refreshing their resumes? Our guest is the lead engineer for TrainingPeaks and their coach-focused software package WKO4, Tim Cusick. He’s been coaching elite athletes for 18 years, including Amber Neben, a multiple-time national and world champion. He comes from the world of data analytics, which gives him a unique perspective on training science. He’s been working in A.I. and machine learning since the 1990s. We’ll also hear from Armando Mastracci, the developer of Xert Training software, which grew out of Armando’s own experience as an engineer in crunching large amounts of data to find trends. Dean Golich, a head coach at Carmichael Training Systems, will share his thoughts on where the software is headed. And finally, we’ll touch base with Joe Dombrowski, of the EF Education First-Drapac WorldTour team, to get his take on how pros are reacting to the data revolution. With that, let’s make you fast … and live long and prosper.
