USA Cycling's Senior Data Analyst Ryan Cooper joins us to talk about Project 4:05, the quest to win the women's track cycling team pursuit gold medal at Paris 2024. The US wasn't considered much of a contender for the podium--defending gold medalists Germany and reigning world champions Great Britain were considered to be the main teams vying for the top prize. However, Ryan developed a process to uncover more with data analytics using machine learning and real-time analytics to optimize rider selection, race strategy and aerodynamic efficiency. If all went according to plan, Team USA's riders Jennifer Valente, Lily Williams, Chloe Dygert and Kristen Faulkner could top the podium with a time of 4:05. Hear Ryan's process, the race results and the subsquent major award beyond the gold medal that USA Cycling received for this endeavor. Follow USA Cycling on Facebook, Instagram, X, and TikTok! We're back! In the first episode of The Cycling Podcast Féminin of 2025, Rose Manley, Denny Gray and Jo Rowsell are looking ahead to what promises to be an enticing road season. We offer up our 'bold predictions' (thanks Denny!) for the coming months, sparking arguments galore as we work out which count as downright ‘fanciful' and which are seemingly probable. Potential Grand Tour victors, Anna van der Breggen's return and winning opportunities for some young pretenders are all up for debate. Plus we discuss the first Women's World Tour race of the season – the Tour Down Under – and reflect on what it might mean for the rest of the year. Noemi Rüegg was the overall winner in Australia, cementing her champion status after a breakthrough season last year. There were also stage wins for Daniek Hengeveld and Chloe Dygert, and a first peek at some new look teams. Also on the agenda, a present from the stork, showing off to your ex on Instagram and some continued Christmas Quiz seething. The Odd Tandem Cycling Podcast with Bobby Julich and Jens Voigt
Bobby and Jens return to the El Tour de Tucson and host a special episode looking back at 40 years of Olympic history. Back in 1984, Nelson Vails became the first, and to date, only black American cyclist to achieve an Olympic medal when he won a sprint silver in Los Angeles. 20 years later, Bobby himself earned an Olympic silver on the streets of Athens. In 2024, Chloe Dygert earned her second Olympic gold medal on the boards in Paris - as a key part of the US team pursuit squad. Bobby and Jens tie these three very different eras together and discover what makes an Olympic medallist, what makes the experience unique and what do fans have to look forward to when the Olympic torch returns to US soil in four years time. This Indiana State Fair annual cheese masterpiece was unveiled this week. American cyclist and Hoosier Chloe Dygert is an Olympic champion after a career-threatening injury and numerous obstacles. Some health experts warn that bringing animals and humans together in one place at a state fair can be an easy place for diseases to spread. Indiana recently approved new standards that now require high school students in earth and space science to learn about human-caused climate change.

Endurance News: IRONMAN Announces Plan for Dual Hosts for VinFast IRONMAN World Championship TAMPA, Fla. (Nov. 30, 2022) /ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE/ – Following the first-ever two-day IRONMAN World Championship and a continued commitment to providing women and men their own dedicated day of racing, IRONMAN announced today that the 2023 VinFast IRONMAN® World Championship triathlon will move forward with two different host venues. To ensure that both professional and amateur women and men have a focused IRONMAN World Championship race experience, the women will race in Kailua-Kona, Hawai`i on October 14, 2023, with the men's race date and location outside of Hawai`i currently being evaluated and expected to be announced in January 2023. For 2024, the men and women would exchange locations. The 2022 VinFast IRONMAN World Championship was held this past October in Kailua-Kona, Hawai`i over two days for the first time in the history of the event, showcasing the very best women and men in the sport while giving both their deserved spotlight. With the future dual host locations and separation of race weeks, the women's and men's races will each garner further attention with all eyes focused on the race week activities and lead up to their respective IRONMAN World Championship race days. While the 2022 VinFast IRONMAN World Championship two-day format was a success in many areas and the two-day format in Kailua-Kona for 2023 had already been announced, IRONMAN and the County of Hawai'i concluded together that the impact of two days of racing in Kona is not currently in the best interest of the local community. “We are reinforcing our commitment for a dedicated world championship race experience for women and men to each receive an exclusive spotlight on their race. Hawai`i is in our DNA and we look forward to the first-ever exclusively women's world championship race week in Kona. At the same time, we are looking forward to announcing a co-host location for the men's race that will be worthy of an IRONMAN World Championship and will capture the imagination of our athletes and fans,” said Andrew Messick, President & Chief Executive Officer for The IRONMAN Group. Hawai`i is the proud birthplace of IRONMAN and despite not being able to undertake a two-day world championship event at this time, it will continue to be an important part in the shared history of IRONMAN, with Kona continuing as a co-host of the IRONMAN World Championship. “Hawai`i County has long enjoyed partnering with IRONMAN and this year's epic races were another example of world-class athletic competition held on the traditional Kona-Kohala world championship course,” said Hawai`i County Mayor Mitch Roth. We learned, however, that more than one race day during IRONMAN week is too many for the community to manage. We are pleased that IRONMAN plans to return to Kailua-Kona as a co-host of the 2023 VinFast IRONMAN World Championship and look forward to more exciting events in the future.” With this major move to ensure dedicated IRONMAN World Championship racing for both women's and men's fields, the qualifying cycle and slot allocations will be slightly adjusted. Allocations may be viewed here, www.ironman.com/im-world-championship-2023-slot with further adjustments to occur in line with the Men's Championship race location announcement, expected to occur in January. Additionally, all athletes who have previously qualified and registered for the 2023 VinFast IRONMAN World Championship will be contacted directly with additional information. Tour de France will skip Paris finale in 2024 For the first time in race history, the Tour de France will not conclude in Paris in 2024. That's according to La Gazzetta dello Sport, which reports that Nice will be the host of the final stage in two years. Why? With the Olympic Games set for Paris from late July into mid-August, officials do not want the logistical and security issues overlapping between the Games and the Tour. The final stage of the Tour has always been in Paris (or in nearby suburbs), and since 1975 the final stage has ended on the Champs-Élysées. The 2024 edition of the Tour is expected to start in Italy for the first time, with stages in Tuscany and the Piemonte regions before dipping into France. The race would then embark on its traditional “grande boucle” around France, but instead of heading to Paris, it will loop back toward Nice for the finale. Nice recently hosted the “grand départ” of the 2020 edition of the Tour that was rescheduled for September in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. Details of the 2023 edition are already revealed, with the race starting in Spain's Basque Country, and the final stage, as always, in Paris. Chloe Dygert undergoes surgery to treat tachycardia Chloé Dygert has undergone surgery to treat supraventricular tachycardia (SVT), a condition which causes episodes where the heart beats much faster than usual. The North American rider revealed the information in a post on Instagram accompanied by video clips of herself lying in a hospital bed. "My SVT was annoying but not life-threatening, (as long as I stopped immediately if I was training)," Dygert, who is set to embark on her third season with Canyon-Sram next year, wrote. "My most recent episode happened while I was out on an easy basic endurance ride, my heart rate peaked at 219, then sat at 205 for five minutes and 195 for another ten minutes. "It would jump between 180 to 205 in the remainder of the episode lasting 35 minutes. I stopped and sat on the side of the road to wait for my heart rate to slow back down below 150." Dygert explained that she had been suffering from the condition for nearly a decade, though the frequency of the SVT episodes had increased in recent months. "It started for the first time back in 2015, only happening once or twice a year until this year," she wrote of the condition, which is rarely life-threatening but may cause a cardiac arrest or unconsciousness. "But just the past two months it has triggered five times. My fear is having one during a race and needing to stop so we made the decision to go in and get it fixed with the frequency increase." Dygert has endured a hard two years after suffering a brutal crash during the Road World Championships time trial in 2020. She was away from racing for nine months following the devastating knee injury suffered after colliding with a guard rail during the Imola time trial. Last year she took part in the Olympic Games road race and time trial, though her 2022 season was once again ruined thanks to a bout of the Epstein-Barr virus. Her SVT surgery seems to only be a minor blip in her recovery, however, as Dygert revealed that she is already back on the bike and training. "I was awake and lightly sedated during the procedure," she wrote. "Definitely one of the most unique kinds of pains I've ever felt. In the recovery, I wasn't allowed to move for 4 hours, giving the artery time to heal from the catheter ablation. I was back on my bike within 5 days after the procedure with only one minor hiccup happening on day 5." What's New in the 303: Meet the East High School Mountain Bike Team East is one of several teams in the league made up of kids that attend different high schools. East and South are the only Denver Public School teams in the league. 96 teams make up the league with schools as far north as Spearfish, South Dakota, and south into Northern New Mexico. How many different schools are represented on the East Team? Denver Online HS, Denver School of Arts HS, DSST: Byers HS, DSST: Cole HS, DSST: Conservatory Green HS, DSST: Montview HS, East High School, George Washington High School, Hill Campus of Arts and Sciences, Morey Middle School, North High School, Northfield High School. Describe the growth of the team over the years. The team was founded in 2010 by Steve Bussey, an employee in the District's Office of Technology. Over the next ten years, the team grew and sometimes shrank before reaching a high point of over 50 riders. However, the team shrank significantly during the pandemic and subsequent cancellation of the racing season. Coming out of the pandemic, we expected the team to be approximately 30 riders, but were pleasantly surprised to field 42 riders and racers by the end of the season. Many are girls and/or high school seniors who joined the team for the first time. In general, how experienced are kids on the team at racing, does the team attract never-before riders as much as experienced riders? Most of our riders have some experience riding trails and some already have experience racing mountain, road, or cyclocross. However, the majority of our riders have never raced before joining the team. More interestingly, being a city-based team, some of our new team members have never owned or ridden a mountain bike before, We love attracting those new to the sport. So, while the learning curve can be steep, it is incredibly rewarding. Some of our favorite stories involve our new riders and the improvement they see over the course of a season. Favorite practice rides and how often do they practice? We practice Monday and Wednesday evenings on the Front Range trails. To avoid the heat in the early part of the season, Three Sisters and Lair ‘O The Bear are favorites. As the days get shorter and cooler, we frequent Green Mtn, North Table, Chimney Gulch, and Erie Bike Park. On non-race weekends, we try to organize rides a little further afield at places like Buffalo Creek or Trestle Bike Park. The biggest hurdle for the team is getting to the trails. Every practice will have a drive 30 minutes or more just to get to the trails. We rely on riders and parents to organize transportation for those unable to drive themselves. It's not easy.
Olympians train hard. For many, it's their job to push harder and longer and heavier than us mortals do. When we say “no way” and bump up against our limits, they endure. But the net effects of all those watts and miles and grunts aren't only measured in washboard abs, records held and medals won: the discomfort of the most unbearable workouts is in a way the reward, giving meaning and value to the endeavor of athletic excellence and creating a bond between those who understand how much ache is required for gold. Hear Carlin Isles, Chloe Dygert and other Team USA athletes recount some of their worst workouts. Weightlifter Kate Nye gives her insight on breaking through to new bests and Canadian Rower Gabrielle Smith joins us from Tokyo with her coach Gavin McKay to talk about reaching the body's limits and teambuilding through discomfort.

A Team Sunweb rider, one staff member from Ineos-Grenadiers and AG2R-La Mondiale also returned positive tests, organisers RCS said. RCS, in a joint statement with the International Cycling Union (UCI), said the teams’ doctors had ordered “isolation measures”. Sunweb’s Michael Matthews had tested positive and sports director Luke Roberts said the Australian was asymptomatic. ‘If This Works It’s Going To Change Everything’: Cycling’s BMC And F1’s Red Bull Advanced Technologies Hint At Cycling Revolution Red Bull Advanced Technologies’ Vehicle Science team has been helping BMC technicians with simulations of bike behavior based on data from Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models. Levels Health Tests and Results: For a given carbohydrate (eg, a banana), what is my blood glucose at different times of the day? Same carbohydrate paired with protein/fat different times of the day Same carbohydrate with no post exercise Same carbohydrate followed by aerobic exercise Pre/during/post aerobic exercise fasted Pre/during/post aerobic exercise fueled (Skratch vs. UCAN) Sunday 2 Hour Brick (90 minute ride/30-40 minute run) Before the test I had a cup of coffee and a high protein and fat breakfast of bacon, eggs and sourdough toast. I had a swig of UCAN Lemon, and a bottle of UCAN Lemon and another of UCAN Hydrate. The brick workout was a 90 minute ride followed by a 30-40 minute run. The protocol was to take a BGL measurement and fuel with UCAN every 15 minutes. The following were tests just prior to starting the ride and every 15 minutes, and a final post ride measurement. The lack of an initial spike in BG illustrates that my muscles are getting adequate glycogen from muscle stores or UCAN, or both. Starting with a high protein breakfast may have had an influence by starting me out with a steady BGL. On the ride, the effort was variable as measured by heart rate and perceived exertion. I was fueling consistently every 15 minutes with UCAN bar and energy drink. Just prior to the 60 minute measurement, a had an encounter with rider who honked off at me for riding their wheel. It actually got me a little honked off and got my adrenaline going (see 10:36 measurement; 101 and rising). It continued to rise to 122 fifteen minutes later. This increase could have been from one or more of the following. A) an increase in effort sending a demand for more glycogen; B) an increase in carbohydrate from UCAN; C) adrenalin rush from the encounter with the rude rider. 15 minutes into the run there was a 12 point drop, which would suggest a sufficient supply of fuel for the muscles and insulin was packing glycogen into the muscles. Fifteen minutes later the BG increased back to 95 suggesting a surge into the blood stream either from UCAN or the liver. The post run measurement was 97. I had a UCAN protein shake with milk after the run and then took a measurement at lunch. There was a big post run spike which I can only attribute to the UCAN protein shake. Why does exercise sometimes raise blood sugar? Exercise can trigger the body to release stress hormones, like adrenaline and cortisol. Adrenaline can stimulate the liver and the adrenal glands to release glucose and cortisol which makes you more resistant to insulin. Video of the Week: The race is Long: Behind the scenes at Bear Lake Brawl Credit to Kenny Withrow Upcoming Interviews: Kristian Blummenfelt is a Norwegian triathlete and Olympian, competing at both short course (sprint and standard distance). In 2018 he set the world record for the 70.3 distance, setting a time of 3:29:04 in 2018 and both repeating the feat and bettering his own mark in 2019 with a time of 3:25:21. Blummenfelt achieved his first career gold at ITU World Triathlon Series level at the Grand Final in Lausanne on the 31st August. Closing: Thanks again for listening in this week. Cycling: Giro d'Italia on brink of cancellation amid COVID-19 cases (Reuters) - The Giro d’Italia was on the brink of cancellation on Tuesday after five teams were hit by COVID-19 cases on the first rest day, with two of them pulling out of the three-week grand tour 12 days before the finish in Milan. The Mitchelton-Scott team withdrew after four staff members tested positive for the coronavirus following top rider Simon Yates pulling out last week. Jumbo-Visma, whose leader Steven Kruisjwijk tested positive, said they would not start the 10th stage on Tuesday. The companies are enlisted Cancellara—an Olympic and World Champion—to validate and evaluate some of the first hardware developments produced by the partnership. What's New in the 303: High School Cycling League and the Colorado Classic Partner to Inspire Student Athletes The Colorado Classic applauds all of these student athletes and is honored to award our Best Young Rider to two Exceptional Student Athletes. These are exemplary student-athletes whose personal standards and achievements are a model to others. They demonstrate outstanding leadership, sportsmanship, academic performance and volunteerism in their team, school, and community. Nominated by the Colorado League community members, the winners will receive a 2019 Colorado Classic Young Rider Jersey signed by the world famous track and time trial superstar, Chloe Dygert. “The Colorado Classic is a trailblazer in it’s high profile support of female professional athletes. All youth are inspired by the visibility of exceptional female role models. Thank you for acknowledging 2020 exceptional student athletes,” said Kate Rau, Executive Director of the Colorado High School Cycling League. The winners will be announced on November 1 on social media. Those not part of the League, are encouraged to vie for a Chloe Dygert – signed jersey in the QOM Jersey competition. Taking place between October 15th and October 21st, participants are asked to join the Colorado Classic Strava Group, hop on their bikes and get climbing! The first cyclist to ride 13,668 feet in elevation (the total amount of feet climbed during the 2019 event) during that week-long climbing window wins. A second signed jersey will be awarded to the cyclist who records the most elevation gain during the Climbing Window. The #InspiredWeRide Jersey Campaign is the latest initiative in a series of ways the organizers behind the Colorado Classic have kept the cycling world engaged during this unusual and trying year; while furthering their mission be more than a race, and act as a movement to inspire and empower women of all ages to break the mold, and fight for their goals. Chloe Dygert is a champion and she’s only just getting started. Laura Winter from Voxwomen talks with her about training, mindset and her cycling dreams. Aérogramme Talks are special episodes of the popular Aérogramme podcast featuring one guest interview at a time. Presented by Pinarello.
Some riders are superstitious, believing that they need everything just so in order to perform. They need just the right lucky clothing, or just the right type of coffee. World time trial champion Chloe Dygert is not such a rider. She doesn't even drink coffee. She just thrives off viewing the best riders in the world as benchmarks, and then getting to work on surpassing them. In this episode of Put Your Socks On, Dygert and her Team Twenty20 boss Nicola Cranmer discuss the pursuit of greatness. In Cranmer's case, that means finding and nurturing talented riders in challenging times as well as good times. For Dygert, that means a relentless work ethic and a refusal to settle — even for her current status as one of the absolute best riders in the world. "I'm definitely the kind of person that if you tell me, I can't do something, I'm going to do it, and I'm going to do it better than you would ever think," Dygert says. "I have role models, but I don't look at them and say I want to be like them. I look at them and say, 'you are a benchmark to what I want to be. I'm going to surpass you, I'm going to be better than you.' I want to be the best at anything and everything I do, and I thrive off of pain. I thrive off of other people's doubt, and I think that's also a huge benefactor into who I am today." As the world of cycling contemplates a cautious return to racing, Cranmer floats the idea of racing time trials exclusively for a little while. What does the reigning world TT champ think of this? "I would not be opposed," Dygert says.

Bobby offers up his take on the unusual disqualification of the U23 men's winner. Following that the boys detail the women's elite road race, including Chloe Dygert-Owen's effort to win two rainbow jerseys. And they bring in a guest, Nicola Cranmer of the TWENTY20 Pro Cycling Team to talk through Chloe's performance and her goals for Tokyo in 2020. The guys close out the show with insightful analysis of the elite men's road race and the surprising bonk of Mathieu Van der Poel, and the even more surprising victor of Mads Pederson of Denmark. Find out what Katie Hall, Allie Dragoo, Lindsay Goldman, Omer Shapira, BePink's Walter Zini and race director Sean Petty thought of the inaugural women's-only edition of the race Organisers of the Colorado Classic haven't been shy about trying new ways to make bicycle racing work in the Centennial State, first pairing their 2.HC men's race and US national calendar women's race with a concert in a 'Velorama' with big-named stars they hoped would attract cross-over fans. For this year, however, the Velorama was gone and organisers made the unorthodox move of shedding the men's event and investing their funds in a women's-only UCI 2.1 race. Four stages took the international peloton from Steamboat to Avon and Golden before the finale in downtown Denver in the shadow of Coors Stadium. Chloe Dygert-Owen (Sho-Air Twenty20) swept all four stages, all the jerseys and the overall, but the real winner may have been US women's racing in general as presenting Sponsor VF Corporation decided to return for at least one more year in 2020. The women raced for a total prize purse of $75,000 this year – $5,000 more than the men did in 2018 – and the race crowdfunded tens of thousands more for primes and local charities during the live video coverage that was broadcast for the entirety of each stage. In this edition of the Cyclingnews podcast, Kirsten Frattini and Pat Malach discuss impressions of the race and its potential moving forward. We also hear from Sho-Air Twenty20's Allie Dragoo, who retired after the final stage, Boels Dolman's Katie Hall, Israeli champion Omer Shapira, Hagens Berman-Supermint rider/owner Lindsay Goldman, BePink directeur sportif Walter Zini and Colorado Classic race director Sean Petty.
When victory is often a matter of inches, mobility on the bike matters. Matt Rowe sits down with Welsh wizard Nathan Thomas, physio for Team Ineos, to discuss what mobility work is best for Zwifters, who works the hardest at Team Ineos, and which countries love physio! Also covered: Kev checks back in after France, Kristen on coaching Colorado Classic winner Chloe Dygert, and an exciting podcast announcement!

You should care about Amstel Gold now. Why? Because removing the Cauberg finale made for a fantastic, tactical race on Sunday, for both the men and women. Amstel is now set to be the perfect segue into what we think will be one of the best Ardennes weeks in years. Plus, we #AskACat3 how the bergs should be ridden and introduce a new segment: Who's Wronger?! Then, a look at future superstar Chloe Dygert Owen, who just won her fifth world title at just 20 years old.
