In this engaging episode of the Driving Change Podcast, Jeff Bloomfield interviews Dr. Iona Naismith, a clinical psychologist, adventurer, and expert in the neuroscience of compassion. Dr. Naismith shares her fascinating journey from growing up in the Scottish Highlands to leading expeditions in the Italian Dolomites and pursuing a career in psychology. The conversation explores the neuroscience behind compassion, the importance of self-awareness, and practical strategies to rewire negative thought patterns for personal and professional growth. The episode offers actionable insights into achieving balance through mindfulness, self-compassion, and emotional intelligence. Why You Should Listen This episode is a must-listen for anyone seeking personal growth or looking to improve their leadership and relationships. Dr. Naismith's unique blend of adventure and psychology provides inspiring lessons on resilience, self-awareness, and the power of compassion. They share their experiences and insights, providing tips and advice along the way. Keywords cycling, Zwift, exercise time, descending, endurance ride, sleep, race preparation, Europe, French Alps, Belgian Cobbled Bergs, Italian Dolomites, gravel races Takeaways Riding on Zwift can be a great way to enjoy group rides and maintain fitness, but it may not provide the same descending experience as riding outside. When it comes to subtracting descending time from endurance rides, it depends on the specific goals and training plan. In general, it's important to consider the overall ride time and the specific muscles being used. Getting a good night's sleep before a race is important, but the sleep you get throughout the week leading up to the race is even more crucial. Having a sleep routine and prioritizing sleep hygiene can help improve the quality of sleep and reduce pre-race nerves. When it comes to cycling in Europe, there are many exciting destinations to explore, including the French Alps, Belgian Cobbled Bergs, Italian Dolomites, and various gravel races. Adventure riding, mixed-surface routes, and iconic climbs are some of the experiences cyclists look forward to when riding in Europe. Scotland, Ireland, and Iceland are also mentioned as potential cycling destinations in Europe. The hosts express their interest in exploring new places and experiencing different types of riding, both in Europe and other parts of the world. Titles Dream Cycling Destinations in Europe The Importance of Sleep Leading Up to a Race Sound Bites "My problem with Zwift is the lack of descending." "Your heart rate can be higher for the descent than it is for the climb." "The sleep that you get the night before the race is a lot less important than the sleep that you get the week leading up to the race." Chapters 00:00 Introduction and Background 05:23 Considering Descending Time in Endurance Rides 13:01 Getting a Good Night's Sleep Before a Race 25:54 Dream Cycling Destinations in Europe 29:11 Cycling Experiences in Europe 36:27 Conclusion

In April 2023, Andrea Papi became the first Italian in 150 years to be killed by a bear. Mauled while jogging, he became an unwitting victim of a well-meaning EU-funded rewilding program designed to reintroduce bears to the Italian Dolomites. This podcast explores where responsibility lies for his death and how it has exacerbated a growing divide in Italy and beyond about the wisdom, safety and management of rewilding large carnivores.Presenter: Johannes PleschbergerProducers: Elizabeth Mearns, Alice CastleSound Editor: Terry WilsonSeries Producer: Elizabeth MearnsSfx: Life UrsusSound Editor: Terry wilson

This week it's our summer special, where we share tips for some of the best adventure destinations for this summer. Helping us out is Nadine from 10Adventures. First off, you can check out these two summer blogs: Escape Crowds this Summer or 10 Tips to Tackle Summer Travel. We start off talking about Europe's top summer hiking trips, such as the Tour du Mont Blanc, Iceland's Laugavegur Trek, the Italian Dolomites, the Camino, and the Amalfi Coast. We also share some tips to beat the summer crowds, like hiking in Triglav National Park, the Vanoise Loop, and the Picos de Europa. We then talk about some of the best cycling destinations, like Irelands Ring of Kerry, the Dolomites, and along the Moselle River in Germany. For North America, there is some great hiking in the Canadian Rockies, and some spectacular backpacking, such as the trip to Mount Assiniboine. There's' also some hiking up in Yukon and Alaska. Self-drive tours are also popular, such as this one in Quebec, another in Newfoundland and a third in the Canadian Rockies. Looking South, you can check out the Inca Trail, Huayhuash, or Trekking in Ecuador. Heading to Africa we talk about trekking in Morocco, or a safari in Southern Africa. Finally, for Asia we talk a bit about Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and Japan!
Snow conditionsFrance - mainly dry this week with possible snow in the Haute-Savoie resorts later in the week (that's pds, grand massif, Elaine la clusaz etc)Austria - The southern Austrian alps remained fairly dry earlier on this week but cloud gathered further north and snow was seen down to 700 m levels which is fantastic and later this week that Snow can expect to build up to 60 cm as low at 700 m, so it's the northern part of Austria that's getting the share of the snow right now the southern part will probably not see hardly anyItaly - a slightly drier week but still cold and sunny it's freezing levels at around 1500 m cloud will increase in the eastern Italian out the Dolomites later this week to by the time this podcast is out with some flurries of snow possible mid to later this week. Those flurries could continue later this week and into the borders of Austria but this is just the eastern part of the Italian Dolomites and it's likely that the rest of the Italian ski resorts will remain cold clear skies with very little extra snow this week.Switzerland - a similar story with plenty of sunshine although clouds will increase in the north and north-east later this week with some possible flurries of snow in resorts to the east of Zürich down to 600 m with flurries of snow turning heavier later in the week also mainly in the north-east e.g. Klosters possibly into Engelberg, Laax, possibly spreading Northwest to the likes of Gstaad, Wengen but resorts like Zermatt, St Moritz will see little, if any, snow. "The idea for this composition came to me quickly after listening to the field recording of a mountain stream, near Rifugio San Marco, in the Italian Dolomites for the first time. I immediately imagined a cascading stream on a sunny day, a clear blue sky and light reflecting off the surface of the water as it descended through nature, a song of hopeful potential. "Although this particular recording originated in Italy, I was reminded of one of my favorite quotes from Morihei Ueshiba, the founder of the Japanese martial art Aikido: “Do not fail to learn from the pure voice of an ever-flowing mountain stream splashing over the rocks,” and so I named this track Voce Pura. "The field recording, in varying forms, runs throughout the entire song like water winding through the Dolomite mountains. I chose keys that sounded crisp, sparkling and airy, yet flowed from one note to the next. At several points, a traditional drum kit is overlaid with two different drum machines as the music surges; and mixes with complimentary beats like water rolling over rocks one instance and suddenly levelling out, mingling in a shallow pool before flowing once again." Myrtha Zierock of Agricola Foradori farms in the Italian Dolomites of northeast Italy. She is the co-owner of her families bio-dynamic wine estate where, after spending many years learning and farming abroad in the US and Canada, she moved back to her family farm and joined her two brothers and mother to apply what she had learned. She manages two different farm locations. One is at the wine estate where crops are grown under the canopy of the high-trellised vineyards and a new site further south with more sun exposure where most of the Winter vegetables are grown. Even with the mild Italian winters, the biggest challenge is transplant timing due to the sunlight dropping behind the mountains in the afternoon, interfering with crop growth and development. She grows a ton of raddichio and leafy brassicas and root vegetables. Half of her sales are through restaurants and the other half direct to consumer. Mytha's goal is to bring year-round vegetables to the same level of appreciation as the wine her family produces.
