Many think cyclists need to hit the weights hard like they do their bike training, but that's a misconception- and a huge, massive mistake... Performance-driven strength training doesn't need to be insanely hard. The "effective rep" theory, which pushes training to slow grindy speeds, has been slowly picking up steam the last few months, and a listener recently asked if they should be training using the "effective rep"approach. My answer, may surprise you- as well as the background of this theory and where it originated from. Hint: it ain't no research study. Take a listen to get the scoop! Free speed is a game changer in cycling that most overlook. Why? Because it's all about efficiency: better cornering, positioning, and reducing drag. Think about it: every time you brake before a corner, you're wasting kinetic energy you've worked hard to generate. Instead, focus on maintaining flow and minimizing energy loss. In races, this can be the difference between finishing strong or falling behind. Most cyclists overlook the importance of maintaining their bike fit position once they leave the fitter. But guess what? Your position is as crucial as your power output. Imagine increasing your speed just by staying in the right position—no extra effort, just pure efficiency. In this episode we pull the second half of Episode 59 with Sebastian Weber to talk about HOW you ride matters. Time to make you faster and more savvy! Dr. Sarah Duvall shared amazing insights on common fears like prolapse, diastasis, and leaking. Women often think these issues are permanent, but many can be managed or even overcome with proper rehab. Diastasis, especially, doesn't have to hold you back. Have you ever stopped to ponder Why is it that while so many cycling and triathlon coaches are touting that they are "Strength Training by the Research", that there has been a big increase in the number of athletes getting injured, not being able to train with quality,or who are seeing DECREASES in their in sport abilities? It's becoming a pretty prevalent issue and something that we, as a community, need to address. In this episode we take a look at the 3 big problems with this approach, and 3 solutions, so that you can be a smarter, stronger, and more savvy coach or athlete. Too many people think more training equals better results. It's simply not true. Strength isn't built by just spending more time in the gym. It's developed through smart, fundamental movements and proper load management. Quality over quantity is crucial. It's not about the number of sessions each week, but how you utilize each one. Remember, high performance comes from understanding how your body works and what it needs, rather than just adding more volume. It's not about cramming in extra sessions; it's about optimizing for the best ROI - your body's adaptation and recovery. Understand that quality trumps quantity. High performance is a strategic craft, not a numbers game. What do you value more in your training: quality or quantity? For many endurance athletes looking to boost performance, one of the most common questions I get is "How do I boost my watts per kilo with fat loss?" While for many riders the answer is far more about better managing their energy, putting their focus on rest and recovery, or simply eating more....for others who do have a higher than healthy body fat percentage, fat loss is a legitimate and sometimes very necessary path. In this episode we share the 8 foundational points that any endurance athlete (or gym goer) needs in order to heathily and more easily lose fat- or to be more precise: How to properly change your Body Composition. When we start to ride our bikes, or practice endurance sports, it often hits us as a bit of an addiction: How far can we go? What new roads and trails can we find? Where DOES that road at that last turnaround point for your 70 miler actually go? But as we progress, we begin to look around (mostly up) to see what the best around us are doing to see if we can emulate their progress (ok, ok, we want to do a bit better). While some may look to get as fast as possible, as quickly as possible, others, like co-host of the Wise Athletes Podcast Joe Lavelle, are eyeing optimization for longevity. Not this year, or next year, but the next 5, 10, or 20 years. "How do I improve my results?" This is a question we all ask ourselves, whether it's in our cycling and triathlon performance, or professionally. While there are a number of ways we can improve our results, the crux of this question boils down to the core of: How do I become a better decision maker? In this episode we talk with Cheryl Strauss Einhorn to learn how to improve our decision making process by improving the process itself, and learning how to better tackle and recognize our blind spots, biases, and poor practices. About Cheryl: Cheryl Strauss Einhorn founded Decisive, a decision sciences company that trains people and teams in complex problem solving and decision-making skills using the AREA Method. AREA is an evidence-based decision-making system that uniquely controls for and counters cognitive bias to expand knowledge while improving judgment. Cheryl developed AREA during her two decades as an award-winning investigative journalist writing for publications ranging from The New York Times and Foreign Policy Magazine to Barron's and The Stanford Social Innovation Review. Each discipline of cycling has it's own demands on the body...this means different physiological needs, and to some degree, some nature or G-d given abilities are needed in order to succeed in some disciplines. For many of us, the challenge of cycling is not only about getting faster and fitter, but also about our evolution and growth as a human being; being pushed outside of our comfort zone, and to achieve new levels of abilities through our on-bike endeavors. And while power meters, heart rate monitors, and social apps like Strava and Zwift allow us to measure our outputs, what often is not measured, is how we use (or don't use) the process to improve. Joanna Yates is a MTB Skills Coach out of Sedona Arizona, who is a living example of embracing the process and using the process, not the output, as a measure to growing towards our full potential. We hung out to talk MTB skills development, how to use the bike to become a better version of yourself, and the importance of stepping up to the challenges with a cool, calm, and collected energy. Why do endurance athletes rush into heavy lifting? Well, much of it has to do with our misunderstanding of how strength training works, and the processes that need to happen for us to safely and effectively lift heavy stuff. This weeks episode will help you have a better understanding of why we should ramp into heavier weights, as well as why your energy system trainings (intervals), seem to have a much faster time to improvement (because they do!). There have been a number of questions about the Stronger After 50 strength training system: Why a strength program for those over 50? What's the difference between this and any other strength program? And why a "system", instead of just a 12 week program? We answer these, and more, on this Mini-sode! https://www.trainingpeaks.com/my-training-plans/Stronger-After-50 --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/menachem-brodie/support
When it comes to building top performances (regardless of whether you're a pro or a "recreational" endurance athlete), there are a lot of considerations that go far beyond your primary sport, and training "for sports results". Kriss Hendy of Strength for Endurance and I sat down and talked how endurance athletes can get a lot more out of their training, not just through strength training, but by having a better understanding of you, as a whole. We cover: Why you cannot just do a "lower body + core" workout...Gotta train the whole High performance begins with learning, and mastering, the basics You cannot out train poor tissues and postures The importance of learning how to land (before you hit those box jumps) Global health keys to pay attention to and much, much more. Back in October, Vern C. replied to an email I sent out to the HVTraining Newsletter with a great question: Does Squatting Make You More Quad Dominant? Should he instead do deadlifts to activate his posterior chain? We sat down to talk about maneuvering through the social media sea, and how to be a better coach and advocate to your athletes and clients, with Andrew Coates. Andrew has been one of the positive and upbeat lights in fitness social media the last few years, gaining "overnight success" since the pandemic.
