TopMedTalk's Andy Cumpstey recorded this piece recently for us at the Royal College of Anaesthetists' Centre for Perioperative Care's (CPOC) annual meeting in London. The conversation features key figures from CPOC, including: David Selwyn, Acting Chief Executive at Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, appointed as the inaugural Director of CPOC in May 2019, Denny Levitt, Professor in Perioperative Medicine and Critical Care at the University of Southampton and a Consultant in Perioperative Medicine at Southampton University Hospital NHS Foundation trust (UHS), Scarlett McNally, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in Eastbourne DGH, UK since 2002, Deputy Director at the COPC (2020-26) and an honorary clinical professor at Brighton and Sussex Medical School, Jugdeep Dhesi, Deputy Director for CPOC, Clinical lead for the innovative and award winning POPS (Perioperative medicine for Older People undergoing Surgery) service, Honorary Reader at King's College London and Associate Professor at University College London, and Lawrence Mudford, who transitioned from a healthcare professional to a patient, following a cancer diagnosis. Following his successful treatment, he took up his current role as a patient representative for CPOC. The panel explore the creation and evolution of CPOC since its inception in 2019, highlighting the collaborative efforts to improve surgical pathways by integrating patient and multidisciplinary voices. They discuss various initiatives, guidelines, and successful practices aimed at enhancing patient-centered care, managing conditions like frailty, diabetes, and anaemia, and promoting shared decision-making. The episode also delves into future goals, such as addressing the implementation gap, fostering digital transformation, and operationalizing educational curricula for healthcare professionals to further support perioperative care.

In this podcast, recorded at our Anaesthesia 2025 conference, Professor and Consultant Anaesthetist Helen Higham talks to Dr Paul Southall about her work and career improving the the 'complex and adaptive system' of anaesthesia often given by its shorthand, 'human factors'. For this work Helen was awarded the Hewitt Lectureship, given to established senior clinicians, academic experts or pioneers in their fields who have advanced the science or art of anaesthetic practice. Paul and Helen discuss her research interests, which include human factors and simulation-based education in healthcare, and her current projects focused on systems-based approaches to safety in primary care, human factors in low to middle income healthcare settings and the use of virtual reality to train healthcare professionals. Helen gives us an insight into her career and professional life, and bangs the drum for the importance of quality improvement, simulation and team-based learning and how central anaesthesia and its culture is to these practices in medicine. In this podcast, recorded at Anaesthesia 2025, host Dr Helgi Johannsson talks to retired anaesthetist Dr John Maginness. On 15 August 1998 a bomb was detonated in Omagh town centre, in Northern Ireland. John, who lived locally, was a member of the medical team who responded. John joined the panel discussion on the Omagh bombing at our 2025 Belfast annual conference and in this podcast, recorded in Belfast, John shares his recollections of that day in 1998. Ageing infrastructure, persistent delays in recruiting staff and an increasing demand for services have been identified as some of the issues facing Nelson Hospital. A review was commissioned after several doctors spoke to media about their longstanding concerns over staffing and patient safety. But it stopped short of explaining how these problems would be solved. Anaesthetist at Nelson Hospital and the president of the Association of Salaried Medical Specialists, Dr Katie Ben spoke to Melissa Chan-Green.

In this piece we discuss prevention of intraoperative hypothermia with Holly Tonkin, a trainee anaesthetist from Australia. Holly describes her study, in which she measured the prevalence of hypothermia using routine forced air warming and then the prevalence using the 3M™ Bair Hugger™ Universal Warming Gown. Significant reductions in hypothermia were observed. Holly's study was supported by Solventum. We then discussed the value of trainee research. Recorded at Evidence Based Perioperative Medicine (EBPOM) in London last year this presentation is the second of a series of four sessions under the heading: “Implementation – what works and what doesn't?”. In this presentation we cover the historical development and implementation of Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS); key milestones from Henrik Kellett's pioneering work in the late 1990s, to the formation of the ERAS Study Group and subsequent international efforts. Also, the differences in implementation between countries, particularly the coordinated efforts in the UK through the NHS and the more fragmented approach in the USA. There's an emphasis on the importance of protocol adherence, auditing, and feedback and barriers to implementation such as lack of agreement with evidence, organizational challenges, and institutional hurdles. Presented by Timothy Miller, Professor of Anesthesiology at Duke University Medical Center. Timothy completed his anesthesia training in Nottingham, UK followed by a fellowship in cardiothoracic anaesthesia at Glenfield Hospital, Leicester, UK. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Anaesthetists. He then joined the Department of Anesthesiology at Duke University Medical Center. His clinical interest is management of the high-risk surgical patient undergoing non-cardiac surgery. His practice is varied and involves general, vascular, major urology and thoracic anesthesia, as well as anaesthesia for transplantation. He founded and is co- director of the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) program at Duke.

Whether you love them or loathe them, there's no denying that snakes are an inevitable part of life in regional Australia - particularly if you live in or around our beautiful bushlands. But what would YOU do if you - or someone you were with - were to suffer a suspected snake bite? And what happens if you're hundreds of kilometers from help or emergency advice? Over a one-year period (as part of a larger, three-year study) the RFDS (Western Operations) found that 85 people from regional, rural, remote and very remote Western Australia were flown by Royal Flying Doctor Service to hospital for suspected or confirmed snake bites. While only five of these patients (6%) ultimately received a toxicologist's diagnosis of envenomation, the research showed just how challenging a remote or regional 'suspected snake bite' scenario can be. Dr Jo Sinclair is an Anaesthetist with a career-long interest in doctors' health and wellbeing. In early 2020 she was appointed the Senior Medical Officer Wellbeing Lead at Te Whatu Ora Counties Manukau, and in that role has been instrumental in bringing Schwartz Rounds to the organisation and developing a Stress First Aid training programme. She was also the hospital lead for the Health Roundtable Workforce Wellbeing Improvement Group. In 2022, Jo was seconded into the role of Interim National Clinical Lead for Employee Wellbeing for Te Whatu Ora Health NZ. She works collaboratively with colleagues in the People and Communications Team to begin shifting the organisational culture to one that supports healthcare workers to thrive at work. In 2023, she attended the Stanford Chief Wellbeing Officer Course in San Francisco to further her capability in this area. Jo has undertaken additional training in coaching and mentoring, critical incident stress management, leadership and communication.
