For this week's episode we take a look at the 1934 version of The Man Who Knew Too Much, the story so nice that Hitchcock made it twice. The 1956 version with Jimmy Stewart and Doris Day is now better known, but this was one of the key early hits that established Hitchcock's career. It's a kidnapping thriller about a British family who gets accidently mixed up in some international intrigue while on vacation in Switzerland. ***SPOILER ALERT*** We do talk about this movie in its entirety, so if you plan on watching it, we suggest you watch it before listening to our takes. Details: A Gaumont-British Picture released in England on December 9, 1934. Produced by Michael Balcon. Screenplay by Charles Bennett and D. B. Wyndham Lewis, based on a scenario by Edwin Greenwood and A. R. Rawlinson. Starring Peter Lorre, Leslie Banks, Edna Best, Nova Pilbeam and Frank Vosper. Cinematography by Curt Courant. Music by Arthur Benjamin. Ranking: 26 out of 52. Ranking movies is a reductive parlor game. It's also fun. And it's a good way to frame a discussion. We aggregated over 70 ranked lists from critics, fans, and magazines The Man Who Knew Too Much got 1,681 ranking points.

Arthur Benjamin, Smallwood Family Professor of Mathematics at Harvey Mudd College and a professional magician, is perhaps better known in our community as the “Mathemagician.” He truly makes math fun, entertaining, and, yes…exciting. In his stage performance, Arthur calculates the square roots of double digit and even triple digit numbers all in his head with lightening quick precision that he can say the number faster than anyone can input the data in a calculator and read the answer. His routine does not use any stooges nor electronics, but is all done in real time in his real head. It is a fascinating display of mental acuity that he explains is within the capabilities of anyone who can do basic math. Mathematician, magician and professor Arthur Benjamin performs high-speed mental calculations, memorization tricks and other astounding math stunts, many of which are taught in his many books on the subject which are all available through Amazon. In this week's episode, Arthur talks about how he developed this act after starting out as a child magician then utilizing his unique skills to build an act around his passion for math. His TED Talks have been viewed over 11 Million times and his books are best sellers. I only wish everyone could have a math teacher like Arthur who would inspire the next generation to love math. Gramophone Magazine called her  transcription of Gliere’s Eight Pieces Op. 39, recorded on the Miller-Porfiris Duo’s second CD “Eight Pieces,”  "satisfying" and "sung with beautiful warmth." Recent acclaim from Fanfare for the Duo's third CD, entitled "Divertimenti" declares their playing "a lightning bolt" and speaks to the "color, fire, and passion."Ms. Porfiris received both her BM and MM in Viola Performance from The Juilliard School, studying with William Lincer. Going through engineering school is hard, let alone passing the FE exam that comes along with it. Some engineers have taken the strategy of taking the FE exam right after school as the best option. In contrast, others get so busy with family- and work-related stuff that devoting hours to studying for the exam daily seems a barrier in itself, which causes them to postpone it — most of the time indefinitely. Today's guest is the living proof that being out of college for a bit and in an exam setting is not that much of an obstacle. Today's interview is with D. J. Leslie, a civil engineer who graduated from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and has been working as a construction inspector at Volkert, Inc. for about 5 years. He started out doing some basic paving jobs, working closely with the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT). He then moved to a much larger project: a three-phase intersection redesign between the two major interstates in Birmingham, the I-65 and I-59/20. Earlier this year, as an engineer with a 5-year experience in the field and away from exam settings for some time, he decided to take the FE exam in October. As a way to help him recall all the content that is tested on exam day, as well as to keep him on track to get a passing grade and connected with people who know how the exam works, he enrolled in the Ultimate Civil FE Review Course. D. J. mentions some features of the course that stood out to him, such as the huge bank of problems available and the practice exams that give a realistic preview of how exam day looks like. Concerto on Themes of Domenico Cimarosa          Arthur Benjamin (1893-1960)I.              IntroduzioneII.             Allegro III.           SicilianaIV.          Allegro giustoThe Australian composer Arthur Benjamin compiled four of Domenico Cimarosa's  sonatas into this oboe concerto in 1942. Cimarosa, a Neapolitan contemporary of Mozart, was best known for his comic operas. He also wrote hundreds of witty single-movement harpsichord sonatas. But Cimarosa backed the losing side in a revolution against the monarchy of Naples. He was imprisoned and then exiled to Venice, where he died at the age of 51. Italian Dance                                                                 Madeleine Dring (1923-1977)Madeleine Dring was an English actress, pianist and composer. She was fluent in the idioms of jazz, pop and musical theater. She received a privileged education and became a skilled classical composer as a student of Ralph Vaughan Williams. She was influenced by the work of Arthur Benjamin, George Gershwin, Cole Porter and Francis Poulenc. Her father, an amateur pianist, was a skilled improviser who encouraged her use of “wrong-note humour” in which she added unexpected notes to conventional chords. While still a student she met the soon-to-be-famous oboist Roger Lord to accompany him for an audition. They married, she wrote many pieces for him, and he in turn tirelessly promoted the publication and performance of her compositions after her early death.

What is the most useful skill I can develop in 3 months?I am 17 and finished high school last year.I spent the last 7 months travelling and now    I have three months of free time. I'd like to learn something that could eventually lead to some income and/or be  useful for the rest of my life, in any way. Thanks in advance for your answer !Brian Woody, Constant student, always teaching myself new things.Written Apr 13, 2016There is a great Ted Talk you might be interested in:Three months is more than enough time to not only experiment with different skills, but to actually learn them to a fair degree. You could conceivably learn around 12 new skills during that time at a lazy pace, or around 24 with the same time commitment as a full-time job (40 hours per week). That said, I would highly recommend the skill of "learning how to learn". Consider it the compound interest of education. Focusing on it this early in life will allow you to learn new things more easily and more fully for the rest of your life! She also has a book (How to Excel at Math and Science (Even If You Flunked Algebra): Barbara Oakley: 9780399165245: Amazon.com: Books) (don't be thrown off by the title; it's literally her Ted Talk in book form), and a free Coursera class (https://www.coursera.org/learn/l...).Along the same lines, did you know that you can train your own memory like any other skill? Imagine how fast you could learn new subjects if you could memorize foreign language vocabulary, the periodic table, or geographical facts instantly with little effort! For that, you'll want to read Amazon.com: Remember Everything You Want and Manage the Rest: Improve Your Memory and Learning, Organize Your Brain, and Effectively Manage Your Knowledge eBook: Helmut Sachs: Kindle StoreandThe Memory Book: The Classic Guide to Improving Your Memory at Work, at School, and at Play. Finally, mental math is a skill that will come in handy for the rest of your life. For this, you'll want to read Secrets of Mental Math: The Mathemagician's Guide to Lightning Calculation and Amazing Math Tricks, Arthur Benjamin, Michael Shermer (and can generate practice problems at Math Worksheet Generator). With those three skills under your belt, there's really no limit to how far you'll be able to go in your chosen field. Good luck![Edit] As far as actual business-applicable skills go, there are three that have proven to be invaluable in my own life: Photoshop, Excel, and programming. In The Magic of Math, Benjamin does more than just teach skills: with a tip of his magic hat, he takes you on as his apprentice to teach you how to appreciate math the way he does. He motivates you to learn something new about how to solve for x, because there is real pleasure to be found in the solution to a challenging problem or in using numbers to do something useful. But what he really wants you to do is be able to figure out why, for that’s where you’ll find the real beauty, power, and magic of math. If you are already someone who likes math, this Science Salon will dazzle and amuse you. If you never particularly liked or understood math, Benjamin will enlighten you and—with a wave of his magic wand—turn you into a math lover.

Today we’ll be talking about The Magic of Math (Basic Books, 2015)by Arthur Benjamin. This is a book that has the gee-whiz feeling you got when you first encountered George Gamow’s classic One, Two, Three … Infinity, but brought up to date and with much more in the way of solid mathematics that students can actually use. What makes this book especially appealing is that Benjamin emphasizes the magic that can be found in the mathematics that students study as they proceed through elementary and secondary schools. Students study arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and trigonometry, but too often the way these courses are taught resembles hospital food – nourishing but tasteless. Every teacher should have a copy of The Magic of Math to help combat the blandness and boredom that students too often experience in the classroom. Learn more about your ad choices.
