In this Jack Westin MCAT Podcast episode, Mike and Molly break down how vision works from start to finish, tying together physics (optics) and biology (retina + neural pathway) in the exact way the MCAT can test it across Chem/Phys, Bio/Biochem, and Psych/Soc.You'll learn how light refracts through the cornea and lens, why the cornea does most of the refraction, and how the eye focuses images onto the retina. Then we walk through transduction in the retina (rods and cones → bipolar cells → ganglion cells), how signals travel through the optic nerve, cross at the optic chiasm (by visual field, not by eye), relay through the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN), and arrive at the primary visual cortex in the occipital lobe for perception. We also cover high-yield MCAT optics and vision topics, including:Cornea vs lens refraction and why LASIK reshapes the corneaFovea and why cones drive high-acuity color visionRods vs cones (low light vs color/detail)Myopia vs hyperopia and which lenses correct each (diverging vs converging)The blind spot and why it existsWhy real images are inverted on the retina and how the brain interprets vision

In this episode of Knock Knock Eye, I focus on one of the scariest eye conditions for your cornea: Acanthamoeba keratitis. This rare but serious infection is particularly frightening for contact lens wearers, as it can lead to severe pain, long-term vision problems, and a difficult treatment process. I break down why this infection is so dangerous, how it impacts the cornea, and offers important advice on how to prevent it. Learn why Acanthamoeba keratitis is a nightmare for your cornea and how to protect your vision. Takeaways: Acanthamoeba Keratitis Is Rare but Serious: This infection occurs when a protozoa, commonly found in water, invades the cornea, causing severe pain and long-term damage. Contacts and Water Don't Mix: Wearing contact lenses in water, whether in pools, hot tubs, or even showers, significantly increases the risk of developing Acanthamoeba keratitis. Pain Out of Proportion to Symptoms: A common sign of Acanthamoeba keratitis is severe eye pain, often much worse than what doctors can see in a standard eye exam. Long, Complex Treatment: Treating Acanthamoeba keratitis can take months, sometimes requiring multiple medications and even corneal transplants in severe cases. Prevention Is Key: The best way to avoid Acanthamoeba keratitis is to keep your contact lenses away from any water source, and always use proper contact lens solution for cleaning and storage. — To Get Tickets to Wife & Death: You can visit Glaucomflecken.com/live  We want to hear YOUR stories (and medical puns)! The cornea is a transparent and multi-layered dome that sits at the front of the eye. It not only provides protection, but bends light to focus it on the retina. Many corneal diseases cause scarring that reduces the transparency of the cornea and results in the loss of vision. In fact, corneal diseases are a leading cause of blindness. Claris Bio is seeking to address the need for therapies to treat corneal disease by developing recombinant human deleted hepatocyte growth factor to improve and accelerate corneal healing. We spoke to Clarke Atwell, CEO of Claris Bio, about the cornea, the role hepatocyte growth factor plays in its healing, and the rare and chronic condition neurotrophic keratitis that it is focusing on as its lead indication.

Challenging The Gender Gap In Sports ScienceThis weekend, Spain and England face off in the Women's World Cup Finals in Sydney, Australia. The first Women's World Cup was in 1991, and the games were only 80 minutes, compared to the 90-minute games played by men. Part of the rationale was that women just weren't tough enough to play a full 90 minutes of soccer. This idea of women as the “weaker sex” is everywhere in early scientific studies of athletic performance. Sports science was mainly concerned with men's abilities. Even now, most participants in sports science research are men.Luckily things are changing, and more girls and women are playing sports than ever before. There's a little more research about women too, as well as those who fall outside the gender binary.SciFri producer Kathleen Davis talks with Christine Yu, a health and sports journalist and author of Up To Speed: The Groundbreaking Science of Women Athletes, about the gap in sport science about women. Using Stem Cells For Cornea Repair Is Worth A LookEach year in the US, over 40,000 people receive transplants of the cornea—the clear front part of the eye that light goes through first. Still more patients with damaged corneas might receive artificial corneas to help restore clear vision. But if an eye has been damaged by a chemical burn or another severe eye injury, neither of those treatments may be possible. Now an early, Phase 1 clinical trial is reporting positive results using a stem cell technique called CALEC. It grows cells from a patient's healthy eye, and then grafts them back into the damaged eye, either to support corneal tissue regrowth or as a foundation for a traditional transplant. Dr. Ula Jurkunas, associate director of the Cornea Service at Mass Eye and Ear, and   Dr. Jerome Ritz, the executive director of the Connell and O'Reilly Families Cell Manipulation Core Facility at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, join Ira to talk about how the process works, and the challenges of manufacturing stem cell tissues in the lab for use in the human body. From Skyscrapers to Sand Thieves—Digging Into The World Of SandWhen you think of sand, thoughts of the ocean and sand castles probably come to mind. But sand can be found in much more than beachfronts. Sand is a key ingredient in concrete for skyscrapers, silicon for computer chips, and the glass for your smartphone.Vince Beiser, journalist and author of the book The World in a Grain: The Story of Sand and How it Transformed Civilization, traveled to sand mines in India and beach nourishment projects around the world to follow the story of how sand has become a vital resource. He talks about the many uses of sand in our everyday lives and some of the consequences that come from our dependence on this natural resource. To stay updated on all-things-science, sign up for Science Friday's newsletters.Transcripts for each segment will be available the week after the show airs on sciencefriday.com.
