The Pittsburgh Penguins finally played a couple of actual hockey games on Sunday with two split-squad preseason games. Before Hunter and Pat get to those games though, they discuss some of the first roster cuts and if anything stood out. They also look at how the Mark Psysk injury affects things for the No. 6 defensive spot as he's trying to make the team. They look at how it's good news that he wasn't outright cut so hopefully, the injury isn't that big of a deal. After that, they analyze who stood out during the two games, starting with Brayden Yager. The two marvel at his shootout goal and how the moment doesn't look too big for him. They discuss how long he's going to be kept in the fold before likely heading down to junior. The two also marvel at how good Alex Nylander is as he continues to push for a spot. Hunter then brings up Austin Wagner's goal and how it was a gorgeous backhand before they analyze Sam Poulin and how great he has looked. Finally, they end the show with what to expect at camp and in the preseason this week.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!DoorDashGet fifty percent off your first DoorDash order up to a twenty-dollar value when you use the code locked at checkout. The Pittsburgh Penguins have been busy this week and Hunter and Pat are here to discuss all of the latest news. They first start out with the three players who were signed to PTO contracts late Tuesday night into Wednesday and analyze whether they have a shot of making the team. They start with Lubor Hajek and how his NHL sample has been ROUGH, to say the least before looking at both Mark Pysyk and Austin Wagner. Which of those two have the best odds of making the team? Can Pysyk push Ruhwedel for a job? Does Wagner fit the bill of the rest of the bottom six moves that were made this offseason? After that, they look at some of the FO moves that the Penguins made earlier this week, including hiring Cam Charron to add to their analytics team. Both Hunter and Pat praise this move a lot as FSG wants to keep building out the team's analytic staff. They also look at the scouts that were hired and have a discussion about how diverse this front office is. Finally, they end the show by discussing how FSG plans to buy AT&T Sportsnet and how this can only be a good thing for the Penguins. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! The Tigers, who won 7-6 in 11 innings Monday, have won two games in Houston after being swept by Tampa Bay in their opening series. Detroit led by one with one out in the eighth when Riley Greene tied a career high with his third hit of the night on a single to center field. Cody Bellinger went 3 for 5 with an RBI, a day after hitting a three-run homer that ended his 0-for-11 start with the Cubs. Ian Happ went 3 for 4 with a tying double. The surge follows a spending spree in the first offseason since players and owners agreed to a five-year collective bargaining agreement last March. Texas Rangers shortstop and union executive subcommittee member Marcus Semien calls it “a step in the right direction.” The New York Mets led the way with a $355 million payroll, $70 million more than the previous high for a season's start. Seven teams topped $200 million. NHL – National Hockey League Last Night Detroit Red Wings 5, Montreal Canadiens 0 Chicago Blackhawks 4, Calgary Flames 3 Red Wings 5, Canadiens 0 – David Perron, Ville Husso help Red Wings beat Canadiens 5-0 David Perron had two goals and an assist, Ville Husso returned from a lower-body injury to make 24 saves and the Detroit Red Wings beat the Montreal Canadiens 5-0 on Tuesday night. Husso was back after sitting out seven games. Lucas Raymond, Matt Luff and Joe Veleno also scored and Jordan Oesterle and Olli Matta each had two assists. Detroit ended a three-game Canadian trip with consecutive victories in Toronto and Montreal. Cayden Primeau made 16 saves in his second start for Montreal this season. Referee Marc Joannette ended his career with the game. He officiated more than 1,500 NHL games and three Stanley Cup finals. Blackhawks 4, Flames 3 – Athanasiou scores twice as Blackhawks beat Flames 4-3 Andreas Athanasiou scored twice, and the Chicago Blackhawks stopped an eight-game slide by topping the desperate Calgary Flames for a 4-3 victory. Jujhar Khaira and Austin Wagner also scored for Chicago, which began the night in last place in the NHL. The Blackhawks swept the three-game series against the Flames. Noah Hanifin had a goal and an assist for Calgary, which had won four in a row. With four games left in the Flames' regular season, Calgary remains two points back of Winnipeg for the second wild card in the Western Conference. NBA – National Basketball Association Last Night Miami Heat 118, Detroit Pistons 105 Atlanta Hawks 123, Chicago Bulls 105 Heat 118, Pistons 105 – Butler leads Heat to late win against Pistons, 118-105 Jimmy Butler scored 18 of his 27 points in the fourth quarter and the Miami Heat avoided an embarrassing loss by rallying to beat the hapless Detroit Pistons 118-105. Miami (42-37) kept its chance of escaping the Play-In tournament alive, but Detroit (16-63) made it tough before losing its 10th straight and falling to 1-21 in its last 22 games. Gabe Vincent scored 22 points for the Heat while Bam Adebayo and Tyler Herro had 18 apiece. Jaden Ivey had 30 points for the Pistons, while fellow rookie Jalen Duren had 20 points and 14 rebounds. Hawks 123, Bulls 105 – Bogdanovic’s 26 lead Young-less Hawks past Bulls 123-105 Bogdan Bogdanovic scored 26 points, as the Atlanta Hawks overcame the loss of leading scorer Trae Young to beat the Chicago Bulls 123-105. Young didn’t make the trip to Chicago due to a non-COVID illness, and starting forward De’Andre Hunter missed his third consecutive game because of a left knee bruise. But Bogdanovic alleviated some of the scoring concerns by scoring 11 of the Hawks’ first 13 points after Zach LaVine scored a field goal to open the game. The Hawks (40-39) hold a two-game lead over the Bulls (38-41), who clinched a play-in spot by virtue of Orlando’s loss to Cleveland earlier in the evening. LaVine led the Bulls with 26 points. Tonight Brooklyn Nets at Detroit Pistons, 7:00 p.m. New York Knicks at Indiana Pacers, 7:00 p.m. Chicago Bulls at Milwaukee Bucks, 7:30 p.m. NCAAWBKB – Robyn Fralick introduced as new Michigan State women's coach Former Bowling Green head coach Robyn Fralick was introduced as the new head coach for the Michigan State Women's Basketball team, the 6th head coach in program history.  Fralick comes to East Lansing after a five year stint at Bowling Green State University in Ohio.   Fralick originally grew up in nearby Okemos, Michigan.  Fralick has an overall record of 192-76, 88-73 at Bowling Green.   Fralick takes over after Suzy Merchant stepped down after 16 years because of health reasons. NCAAMBKB – Purdue’s Zach Edey wins Wooden Award as top hoops player Zach Edey of Purdue has won the John R. Wooden Award as the nation's top men's college basketball player. Caitlin Clark of Iowa won the women’s award. Edey is the first Canadian-born winner and the second player from Purdue to be honored. He joins Glenn Robinson who won in 1994. Purdue was upset in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Clark led the Hawkeyes to the women’s championship game where they lost to LSU. Edey and Clark will receive their awards on Friday at the Los Angeles Athletic Club. Golf – The Masters – Woods and his limp back at Masters, but for how much longer? Tiger Woods is at the Masters for the 25th time. Not even he knows how much longer he will keep playing. Woods says he doesn’t know how many more he has in him because of injuries to his legs and back. He describes his right leg as being full of hardware. Woods brings a degree a normalcy to this Masters that is filled with chatter and speculation about LIV Golf. Woods still draws the biggest crowd. Now he sees if he can match the Masters record held by Fred Couples and Gary Player of making 23 cuts in a row. Golf – The Masters – Mickelson back at Masters after year away from Augusta Phil Mickelson returned to Augusta National on Tuesday for a practice round ahead of the Masters. He missed the event last year for the first time since 1994, after some controversial comments about the Saudi-backed LIV Golf breakaway circuit were published. Mickelson is now one of LIV Golf’s star attractions. He is among 18 players from the circuit playing this week, including six former Masters champions. Mickelson called it his “favorite week” and lamented missing it a year ago. He also said he has no problems with players that have been critical of his decision to leave the PGA Tour, including 1992 champion Fred Couples, who recently referred to Mickelson as a “nutbag.” MCCAA – Junior College Athletics Yesterday Softball Lake Michigan College 13, Marian Ancilla College 1 – Game 1 (5 Innings) Lake Michigan College 11, Marian Ancilla College 2 – Game 2 (6 Innings)                                                                                                                               MHSAA – Ecorse’s Malik Olafioye named Michigan AP D3 player of year Ecorse's Malik Olafioye has been named the Michigan Associated Press Division 3 boys basketball player of year. The University of Cincinnati product is a .296 career hitter against the Reds. Today Chicago Cubs (Stroman 1-0) at Cincinnati (Greene 0-0), 12:35 p.m. Detroit (Rodriguez 0-1) at Houston (Javier 0-0), 2:10 p.m.    News/Talk/Sports 94.9 WSJM 1:45 San Francisco (Webb 0-1) at Chicago White Sox (Cease 0-0), 2:10 p.m. MLB – AP exclusive: MLB average salary up 11% year after lockout The average Major League Baseball salary was up 11.1% to a record $4.9 million to start this season, the biggest jump for the sport since 2001, according to a study by The Associated Press.
