With horrifying images circulating amid devastating world news, we wanted to talk today about something that comes up constantly in times of despair: how to find the light, and how to talk to our kids about things that are scary and seemingly unspeakable. What about when we feel like we have no answers ourselves? How can we keep moving forward, setting the boundaries we need to set while also not sticking our head in the sand?We cover all of it-- and hopefully give you some hope-- today in Baggage Check. We all do it. Okay, maybe we shouldn't say we all do it-- because that's what we're up against today. We're talking about all-or-none thinking. We've mentioned this type of thinking before on Baggage Check, and how it is a common cognitive distortion that can easily make you more anxious, more depressed, and more irritable. But today we're tackling how to spot it-- and you may be surprised at some of the ways you use it. Join us! Feeeeeeelings! We've talked about them quite a bit on Baggage Check. But what we haven't talked about yet is something crucial but often overlooked: the way that we feel our emotions, physically. It's virtually impossible to improve how you deal with negative emotions if you don't have a good foundation of understanding how they manifest in your body. And though it's specific to every person, we start with some nearly-universal trends in how people tend to feel certain classic negative emotions. Do you recognize yourself in these? If you want a crash course in how to think about the mind-body connection, or even if you are a practiced mindfulness guru who wants to spend a little time thinking about the different ways that feelings show up in your own personal body, you'll want to listen to today's Baggage Check. We talk a lot on Baggage Check about warning signs, problems, risky behaviors, and conflicts within relationships-- along with things that just make you feel a little bit off.But what about the pillars of a good relationship?Today we're celebrating, acknowledging, and learning about all the positive factors that can help build a healthy partnership. Whether you never really had a model of it growing up and you're sort of lost of how to begin, whether you've got a great relationship that you're wondering if you could make a little greater, or whether you're just curious to hear more positive aspects of a partnership rather than worrisome ones, you'll want to listen to today's Baggage check. People often say they're "bad with change," or, seemingly less often, that they're good with it. But change isn't a monolith. Different changes can involve vastly different things: are you good at adding things in, but not letting go of things? Are you okay with making room for the idea of new things but not actually doing it? Is commitment itself what's hardest for you?Today we get real about the concept of change-- and we mean real, because Baggage Check's episode release schedule is about to change, for a very personal (and exciting) reason. If you're ready to debate what the definition of biweekly is, in addition to reflecting on what change is like in your own life, you'll want to listen to today's Baggage Check. There's no shortage of difficult people in the world. You can find difficult people in the workplace, groups and organizations, in your relationships, and who knows... maybe you even live with a difficult person! Learning how to deal with difficult people is a tool we need in our toolbox because it helps us to navigate these situations with more ease each and every time they come up. As we learn how to deal with difficult people, we create better habits and scripts so we can stress less, use less energy, and create stronger boundaries for ourselves. Relationships are a wonderful part of life but can also be one of the most challenging when we find ourselves encountering difficult people. In this episode, with Andrea Bonior, Ph.D, host of the Baggage Check podcast, we talk about how to deal with difficult people and be less of one yourself: The categories/types of difficult people in our lives Why it benefits us to learn these skills and deal with situations and difficult people rather than brushing them aside How to deal with a difficult person with honesty, compassion, and confidence What to do when you're facing gaslighting and narcissism in a relationship How to handle energy vampires What do when YOU'RE the difficult person (spoiler alert: we all are at times) Practical techniques for building resilience and patience to deal with difficult people in your life Suggestions and tools for finding the right therapist or mental health professional for you And more! Today we're talking with Marni Amsellem, Ph.D., a licensed clinical psychologist who specializes in health-related issues. With more and more individuals predicted to suffer from physical health problems in the coming years, and with many already suffering mightily, we thought it was high time for a conversation about the role of psychological support in medical treatment. Note: This episode was recorded before the news broke about Monday's shooting at Michigan State University. But despite that, we talk extensively about gun violence in this episode, because any conversation about mental health, particularly the mental health of young people, necessarily includes discussing gun violence. The news has felt even harder than usual lately, between the earthquake in Turkey, the train disaster in Ohio, threats to reproductive freedom, our ongoing epidemic of gun violence, and more. This month, we've been talking about young people and how we can support them… and one key piece of that puzzle is supporting their mental health. We're joined by one of our favorite therapists (and favorite mother-in-laws) Debby Paris to talk about how we can talk to our kids in age-appropriate ways about what they're seeing in the news and in their schools. Then Amanda sits down for a chat with one of our OTHER favorite therapists, Dr. Andrea Bonior of the podcast “Baggage Check”! Andrea and Amanda chat about how young people are feeling (not great!), how we can support them, and how we can protect our own mental health as moms. Finally, Amanda and Jasmine raise a glass to secret admirers, organizing a legislative retreat, and to the SuperBowl (okay, mostly to Rihanna) in this episode's “Toast to Joy.”Earlier this week, we hosted a conversation with Rachel Vindman and Shannon Watts of Moms Demand Action. They talked about the power of moms to effect change on gun violence prevention. If you're feeling overwhelmed and want to know what you can do, we encourage you to check out that conversation on Red Wine and Blue's YouTube channel: https://go.redwine.blue/sw2.For a transcript of this episode, please email theswppod@redwine.blue. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder is one of the most misunderstood disorders in modern culture. Whether it's using the word "OCD" as slang, assuming it's about being neat and tidy or trivializing the suffering of those who have it, misconceptions abound. That's why it was an honor to hear directly from someone who has lived it-- journalist and best-selling author David Adam. Join us in understanding the human behind the disorder, on today's Baggage Check. John Palmer, an immigrant from England, fiddled around at country dances in Union City and Burlington, and devised a solution to save the dancers trouble. He observed that people were having trouble after dances finding their garments, and Palmer came up with a solution that was ultimately adopted by some railroad employees from Marshall, and the baggage check system was born. It is a fascinating story from Calhoun County history. The number of people doing DNA tests and charting their family trees online has skyrocketed over recent years. And it can be an incredibly meaningful journey-- and also one that is shocking and upsetting. This week we speak with renowned genealogist and journalist Jennifer Mendelsohn about all kinds of stories, from the heartwarming to the stomach-churning, and explore what to keep in mind if you start on the search yourself. What's the meaning of "family"? Does our DNA tell us anything about who we really are? Why is the draw toward finding out our ancestry so powerful? We talk about all of it, in today's Baggage Check. For more on Jennifer Mendelsohn's recently announced collaboration with the Center for Jewish History, to provide free DNA kits to Holocaust survivors and their children, check out the DNA Reunion Project. Andrea Bonior is a psychologist who spent fifteen years turning what she'd learned in the therapy office into a mental health column for The Washington Post called “Baggage Check.” She's also the author of three books, including Detox Your Thoughts. She writes for Psychology Today and is the host of a new podcast called Baggage Check. Some of the things Andrea shares are how to deal with people who cancel plans at the last minute, what to do when someone always points out the negative, and how to respond to unsolicited advice.
We've talked about signs of toxic workplaces before. But sometimes, it all boils down to one person-- and what happens when that person is your boss? I enjoyed a lively conversation today with Dr. Andrea Bonior, a licensed Clinical Psychologist and faculty member of Georgetown University. Dr. Bonior spoke with me today about nurturing adult friendships, and the importance of friendships to both physical and emotional health and well-being. She talked about many aspects of friendships, including: picking and maintaining the right friends for your personality recognizing when friendships are healthy versus unhealthy how life events can challenge friendships and how to face these challenges recognizing the normal ebbs and flows of friendships differences between males and females on making and maintaining friendships frindships and social media simple suggestions for nurturing existing friendships Dr. Bonior recently launched her own psychology podcast called Baggage Check: Mental Health Talk and Advice, which premiered November 1st. Baggage Check is about getting real regarding mental health and making listeners part of the conversation. She's written several books on topics of psychology, including THE FRIENDSHIP FIX about topics related to Adult Friendships. In the Baggage Check series premiere, we dive into the concept of toxic positivity—and how we live in a global culture where happiness is both grossly misunderstood and constantly obsessed over. Getting real about the research on two very different conceptualizations of happiness—eudaimonic versus hedonic—and how one of them is associated with vastly improved mental health and fulfillment, Dr. Andrea discusses the serious cultural changes that seem directly to impact our moment-to-moment experiences of emotion. If you've ever wondered what “happiness” even means, and why the search for it can feel so futile as depression and anxiety rates continue to rise, this episode is for you.
