Authenticity used to be my favorite word... I used to absolutely LOVE the word "authentic". It meant something. Genuine and true blue. I blame marketing but authenticity has lost a bit of its spark as it became a "strategy" and "tool" for business owners. In this episode, my guest, Melissa Snow and I get into the word Authenticity and unpack what it really means. We also couple it with another scary one that goes hand-in-hand with being authentic, "networking". Don't let the internet buzz ruin these words for you! In this episode: We get into what it means to be authentic What authenticity isn't How to learn more about the authentic, true blue YOU human inside How to network like a human What it looks like to infuse intention into what you do and share Melissa helps make the intangible tangible as she offers practical action steps, and of course a little soul-searching to get you started! This past year, life's felt a little more cluttered and confusing to me than usual. As I was starting to do some of my end-of-year reflections and planning forward, I asked myself some of my usual questions: "What do I want in the coming year? What do I want to create? What do I want in my LIFE?" And a lot of my answers weren't really satisfying or deeply fulfilling. They were based largely on what I wanted to do and accomplish, and didn't really get into who I wanted to be. Looking for more depth and clarity in what was REALLY burning inside me to create, I discovered Bonnie Wan (today's guest), author of The Life Brief: A Playbook for No-Regrets Living. Today's episode is my conversation with Bonnie as she shares her own story and gets into what a life brief is and what it can do in your life. It's surprisingly simple and yet, lends itself to endless possibilities. In our interview, Bonnie Wan shares: Her personal story and breaking point: what inspired her in this work of helping people with their Life Briefs and writing her book. What would it look like to DO the damn thing you REALLY want to do in your life? Do you know where to start identifying what that thing is and how to make space for it? To wrap up 2023, I wanted something new, fresh, and inspiring vs. just the normal old goal-setting and planning. I wanted to get super solid on WHAT I'm focusing on in the coming year and WHY. I want to go after my biggest dreams 150%! In order to get clear on what that looked like, I needed to dump all the puzzle pieces of my life onto the table and see which ones fit and which ones didn't (some belonged to someone else's puzzle entirely, and I have no idea how they got in my bag!). It was in Taking Inventory personally and professional and doing a little soul-searching that I met today's guest, Bevin Farrand, author of Your Damn Manifesto which is a guide to getting clear on your vision and putting it front and center at all times. In this episode with Bevin: Why she encourages us all to just do the damn thing in life! What a personal manifesto is and what it can do How to identify your most meaningful dreams and goals (even if you want to do #allthethings) How micro-steps can help us get the miles Why the "moments" matter more than the "minutes" What to do if someone "poo poos" your idea and dream What to do about your mindset if it's not in the right place to get started And so much more! About Bevin Farrand: In 2019, after an unexpected loss just 5 days after she returned from a whirlwind trip to France with her husband, Bevin Farrand founded the Take the DAMN Chance movement and created the Do the DAMN Thing Method. Her DAMN framework has inspired thousands to connect with the people that they love, do the “crazy thing” that makes all the difference and, when given a choice, to take the damn chance. The words we use shape our every day, our environment, the people around us, and our world. Are we using words and phrases in a way that creates the world we want to live in? Are we using language in a way that allows us to intentionally connect, include, and bring people together? In this episode, with special guest Emily Nichols, we look at the topic of the many things we say (and phrases we take for granted), and how they can actually work to alienate and separate, rather than unite and include. I believe podcasts have the power to change lives. Podcasts help people access information and education in an affordable (often free) way. They give voice to messages of hosts and guests who may not otherwise have a platform to share their impact. They can raise awareness around issues, people, concepts, and ideas. As a podcaster, you learn, grow, and evolve in the journey of podcasting. You never know who you will meet when you podcast. You can create powerful connections as a listener and a host, and a single episode can change a trajectory, perspective, or relationship. The possibilities are endless. In this week's episode, I sit down with Adam Adams, host of the Podcast on Podcasting and we get some of his unique perspectives on creating great content through the power of podcasting. In this episode: How Adam came to be a podcaster and start the Podcast on Podcasting How Adam helps podcasters grow their shows The difference between good and GREAT content What makes content memorable How to prepare and stand out as a podcast guest The best way to make money podcasting How and WHY to be your authentic self no matter what type of content you're creating And more! Do you know your numbers enough to know how much money you need to pay yourself to keep the lights on and vehicles registered? Do you know how much your business needs to cover its expenses? Do you even know what your business expenses are? We don't always take time to pause and ask ourselves these questions or dive into the numbers enough to know what's really going on under the hood in our businesses. Furthermore, the online space perpetuates a whole lot of loose advice and notions that we THINK we should be going along with, rather than sharing the behind-the-scenes of: What it really looks like to achieve / attain a goal What's involved in maintaining a certain level of income For this week's episode on whether or not $100K is the ticket to sunshine, unicorns, and rainbows, I brought in Sarah Young, host of the Profit + Prosper Podcast and Founder of Young + Co., a virtual CFO agency. Today's podcast guest changed my life. In addition to being my friend and changing my life that way, Alesia also changed it by showing me how to use metrics to inform strategy when it came to my podcast. I hired Alesia Galati of Galati Media to do a podcast audit of the She Built This podcast back in early March 2023. We sat down and went through all the numbers, and Alesia dug in and asked me about my goals for the show. It was in learning more about podcast performance metrics and having Alesia make sense of them for me that I was able to use the metrics to inform my strategy moving forward. In this episode, Alesia and I get into the importance of tying things that you measure in your business (metrics you track) to your goals, and how doing so can help you make clear decisions and inform your strategy. In this episode on how to use metrics to inform strategy, Alesia Galati and I cover: Why metrics are important in your business The metrics that Alesia tracks in her business and why The metrics/numbers Alesia doesn't waste her time tracking Specifically for podcasters, how to evaluate the goals you. have for your show and use your numbers to inform your strategy When we might need outside help in knowing our numbers And more! About Alesia Galati of Galati Media: Alesia Galati is the owner of Galati Media and has been listening to podcasts since 2015. As you can imagine, with all that time put in, she knows what goes into creating a standout podcast that captures your audience's attention even before they press “play”. Alesia's helped coaches and thought leaders launch and maintain over 50 podcasts and has developed a signature, thorough system for launching and managing podcasts so you don't have to stress about anything falling through the cracks! Alesia lives in sunny North Carolina with her two kiddos and husband. When not helping her clients, Alesia can be found reading over 200 books a year, hiking, and exploring the zoo with her boys. Today's episode is a result of my own curiosity to become a better speaker, presenter, and podcaster! I always want to learn as much as I can about how to clearly express my thoughts and ideas to others. My desire is to speak in a clear and effective way so that I share information and exchange ideas with my listeners and participants. The idea was sparked after reading an article written by Alan Alda on BigThink.com called "3 Rules to Express Your Thoughts so That Everyone Will Understand You" and it uses the power of three in three different ways for you to start applying in your own communication efforts. Content creation & artificial intelligence seem to go hand-in-hand for many entrepreneurs and small business owners as of late. I spend a lot of time observing the many uses and applications of ai-generated content creation, listening to podcasts, and reading articles on how people are using it as a tool to ideate, improve writing, and more. I still have some questions and a few concerns. My curiosity this month is around the benefits, limitations, and cautions when it comes to content creation using artificial intelligence and I brought in fellow copywriter, Erin Ollila to talk about it with me! Erin is an SEO copywriter who knows her stuff as it relates to using ai content creation tools like Chat GPT to generate ideas, save time, improve accuracy, and even use as a springboard for conversations with our clients. In our conversation about Content Creation & Artificial Intelligence, Erin Ollila and I cover: What's been changing in the world of SEO and how AI impacts the internet/search landscape as a whole Whether or not AI will null and void the need for SEO How we're seeing people use artificial intelligence for content creation Limitations and concerns as it relates to content creation & artificial intelligence A question to come back to no matter what content you're creating Ethical factors to consider in using AI for content creation And more! About my Guest, SEO Copywriter and Copywriting Coach Erin Ollila Conversion copywriter. Copy Coach. Wing Woman. Word slinger. You might want to buckle up your seatbelt for today's episode and turn your podcast player off 1.5x speed if it's set there because I'm fired up and full steam ahead in this one! I'll be sharing some little secrets I've been keeping which were a result of some of the things I learned by repeating myself. In this She Built This episode, I share why repetition is effective for your message and your business as I give you five lessons learned from my most loquacious (and most repetitive) month ever. Do you ever get tired of talking about the same thing over and over again in your business? Do you feel like you're repeating yourself? In the month of April 2023, I repeated myself more than ever in my messaging as I approached the same topic from different angles. It helped me understand deeply why repetition is effective both for us the creators and those receiving the work on the other side. For me, all that repeating ended up being my most prolific and loquacious month ever and the ideas just kept on coming! Repetition led to my next BIG idea which I'm sharing and announcing for the first time in this episode. 5 Reasons Why Repetition is Effective: People may not have seen it the first time and need multiple touchpoints There's a lot of power in going deeper vs. wider on a topic Consistency/repetition is one of the most powerful tools you have to keep your message clear It helps you improve just about ANY skill or craft! It helps you hone in on what you really think, feel and believe! In this She Built This episode about the Enneagram in relationships, my guest Christina Granahan and I dive into the communication styles of each Enneagram type and talk about how our personality types impact our communication with others. We discuss how learning about how communication styles differ from personality type to personality type, we can become more empathetic and understanding. We also cover how, for each of us, our greatest gifts and assets can also be our greatest liabilities in our personality types. In this conversation about how personality types affect communication, we cover: The body, mind, and heart triads of the Enneagram and what each are seeking as they move about the world How we might respond when we feel unseen, unheard, or misunderstood Where Christina sees people bumping up against their own personalities How each of the Enneagram personality types affect communication What role shame plays in our communication And More! Connect with Christina Granahan: Christina has been curious about people her entire life. In elementary school, she told her teacher she wanted to be a social worker so it was a surprise to no one when she graduated with her MSW at 22. She has spent much of her career working with teens and adults living at the intersection of one or more marginalized identities including LGBTQ, BIPOC, people with AIDS, people with substance use disorder, and those who are undocumented, living in the US. About 15 years ago she expanded her work to include coaching and consulting with staff groups, supervisors, and directors around clinical issues, leadership development, and team building. Since then, Christina's deeply focused in on the Enneagram in hopes of getting clarity on some important relationships in her life. Through the learning, she discovered that she was the problem. More accurately, she was a problem and the only one she could change. Since that first course, Christina has been immersed in the Russ-Hudson tradition, attending the Enneagram Institute, participating in a 15-month course on the Enneagram and conscious living, and is currently completing a certification course in teaching the Enneagram to beginners as well as advanced learners. Christina is an expert in personality development, developmental trauma, and the Enneagram and is committed to helping others live more consciously, make more informed decisions in their lives, and tell the truth. My guest this week, Milton Stewart is the host of the "Do it for the Gram Podcast" I discovered his show on my own seemingly endless quest to determine and learn about my Enneagram type. What I learned when I began this journey, and what you'll learn in this episode is that a simple online Enneagram test isn't always the most accurate way to land on your type. You'll also find that simply learning your Enneagram type isn't the actual "work" - the work is using it as an awareness tool, a guide for GROWTH, and a way to deepen connections with others and yourself. Whether you're an Enneagram nerd like me, or if you're thinking, "Ennea-what!?" - I think you'll love this episode as we explore the motivations of each type, and what can change in our lives when we decide to unlock awareness and move past auto-pilot and reactivity to choice. We cover: Why the Enneagram is important in our lives and relationships How to use the Enneagram in business How do you start to learn your Enneagram type What it looks like to work on yourself (and where to tangibly begin!) And more! About Milton Stewart: Milton Stewart, MBA, the founder of Kaizen Careers, Coaching and Consulting LLC and loves facilitating the Enneagram in helping people feel seen, heard and safe. He is one of the very few African-American male Enneagram teachers in the world. Milton believes the Enneagram is more than just a personal tool but a map of how to truly honor the humanity of others. He uses the Enneagram in many ways but the most powerful way he uses it is in spaces of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Milton hosts “Do It For The Gram: An Enneagram Podcast”, which teaches the Enneagram from a very practical standpoint. Milton is the first African-American male International Enneagram Association Global Board Member. I think often about my upcoming transition to the next decade. At the time of recording this, I'm three and some change years away and I've already put a lot of thought into what I want the big celebration to 4-0 to look like! I also have a little list of things (shocker, I know) started that I'd like to accomplish before I hit the milestone. But until recently, I hadn't considered any sort of countdown ritual or project. My guest today, Stephanie McLaughlin, host of the Forty Drinks podcast and owner of Savoir Faire Marketing got me thinking up some ideas! As you listen, think about how you could creatively adapt this to a project that would memorialize something meaningful for you. Maybe it's a milestone, a transition point, or an entire YEAR of something. In this episode, you'll hear: What Stephanie's countdown to forty project consisted of and how it changed her life unexpectedly What's so special about the age of forty and that decade in particular How to adapt the concept for ourselves and try a similar experiment Insights and wisdom for those of us coming behind And more! Connect with Stephanie: Websites: www.savoirfaire-us.com www.fortydrinks.com Social Media Links: Facebook Instagram Savoir Faire Marketing Facebook LinkedIn Stephanie's Full Bio: In 2022, Stephanie McLaughlin celebrates 15 years of small business ownership. Not one to rest on her laurels, she launched a podcast based on the passion project she's worked on for 10 years. Savoir Faire is a marketing agency based in New Hampshire that serves small- and medium-sized businesses. The rapid evolution of the web – and how people use it – has empowered consumers. But keeping up with the pace of change frustrates and overwhelms many business owners. That's where Stephanie and Savoir Faire come in. The Forty Drinks Project is something Stephanie did when she turned 40. She celebrated the big “four oh” having 40 drinks with 40 friends in 40 different places – and each drink had a thematic connection to the friend. What began as a wacky way to celebrate her birthday extended into a yearlong adventure and turned into something else entirely. Stephanie had no idea this “just for fun” project would change her life – but it did! Ever since, she's been captivated by turning 40 and how other people handle the milestone. This year, the project came to life as The Forty Drinks Podcast, conversations with people about their life experience around turning 40. This birthday often comes wrapped in larger life changes, whether it's a newfound search for meaning, accepting your mortality, or shedding all those things you did because some external authority said you “should.” Stephanie lives in Manchester, NH, with her husband Patrick, and a rambunctious black cat named Quinn. Professionally, she's confident and optimistic. Personally, she's sassy and a little ridiculous.
Ever look forward to a break, holiday, or vacation SO MUCH only to have it let you down and not go as planned? That's what happened to me this past holiday season and I decided to share the behind-the-scenes story about the entrepreneur who couldn't take a break. Or at least, not the one she'd planned for. I hope you enjoy and get some side-splitting (not LITERAL side-splitting, leave that to me...) laughter out of this one, as well as glean some insights and takeaways. And don't worry, these are relatively evergreen a-ha's and will be applicable no matter when you listen! I wanted this episode to feel like we're having a cozy conversation over a hot beverage and roaring fire and chat with you about: Three tiny takeaways from the past year Focus and direction for 2023 What I learned about "doing enough" How to play it by ear without losing your cool How to review your year and look at where you spent your time, energy, and attention And more! A lot happened this past year in the way of content creation. If you aren't into videoing yourself performing dance moves, lip-syncing, and you don't have a cute little dog dressed in a tutu to record... you may have felt that you had a hard time keeping up with the fast-moving content train. You're not behind. You're OK. I'm OK. We're OK! In this episode, I'll share five little content lessons from the past year that I'm taking forward with me into 2023 to help improve my message, content, and engage with my community more in the New Year! I get into how content creation can be more FUN when we are: Favoring consistency vs. frequency (and choosing what that looks like for us) Infusing MORE of ourselves and our personality into our content! Crediting the work of others Creating with cohesion And showing people we care! This episode is jam-packed with energy, reminders, and resources!
