It's been a tough week for the vinyl subscription service Vinyl Me, Please (VMP). A week so rough, that many are questioning their longevity + survival. Our panel talks about some of these latest hiccups, as well as visits the history of the company, their evolution to becoming the premiere vinyl subscription company in the marketplace, and will these latest missteps - coupled with ongoing litigation, declining subscription rates, and yet another price increase - seal their fate? Will they join former subscription competition like Qrates and Bandbox in the vinyl graveyard? Episode 197: John Roderick of The Long Winters

Vinyl Emergency

To say The Long Winters had some bad luck getting their music on vinyl would be an understatement: After a hurricane in the mid-2000's sent most copies of an exclusive box set into the Atlantic Ocean, the band struck a relationship last year with Bandbox -- an LP-subscription service doing limited, colored pressings of modern classics and out-of-print material -- only to have the company go suddenly belly-up, leaving the albums pressed, but under the ownership of Bandbox's investors, as collateral. Thankfully, Barsuk Records (the influential Seattle label which the band called home for their entire tenure) has come through with standard black pressings, allowing die-hard fans to finally add 2003's majestic and acclaimed When I Pretend to Fall and more of the catalog to their shelf. On today's show, Long Winters lead singer/guitarist and songwriter John Roderick dissects the Bandbox fiasco, his infatuation with acid rock at an early age, and how he recently ended up on a Las Vegas party bus with 90's rockers Ugly Kid Joe. Find more info on the Long Winters vinyl reissues at barsuk.com, check out the band's new rarities compilation So Good At Waiting wherever you stream music, and follow @johnroderick on Instagram and Threads.

Aloha Buddies! With the recent announcement that subscription-based vinyl service BANDBOX was closing up shop amidst bankruptcy proceedings, it led me to consider what the vinyl subscription + service space looks like past, present, and future. Vinyl Me, Please is the lion in the vinyl-curation/subscription business, but there are several smaller businesses that are putting exclusive and distinct records in the hands of their customers through this business model, and adding their own unique "spin" (#dadjoke) to how they go about it. This pod will walk through that and also identify other potential threats to this distinct business model out in the greater vinyl landscape. By night, in the late nineties, The Bandbox club and Splitz bar had countless coatless young people lining up outside the doors to get inside. Often, the wait was cold in the biting North Sea air; partygoers shuffled slowly in the queue as bouncers decided who could get in, but this didn't deter people from hanging around. By day, Felixstowe in Suffolk is more slow-paced — tourists and retirees enjoy fish & chips, ice cream and blue flag beaches. Life is peaceful. Be that as it may, a senseless murder in 1999 was one of the biggest and most complex cases officers in the port town ever had to investigate…*** LISTENER CAUTION IS ADVISED *** This episode was written by Rosanna Fitton. This week's episode is sponsored by BandBox. Swedish singer-songwriter Kristian Matsson has released album after heartbreaking album of material under The Tallest Man on Earth moniker since 2006, after previously leading the band Montezumas. His most recent record, I Love You, It's a Fever Dream. glimmers with an innate warmth, a fireside glow that carries through in his voice even over the phone. In this cozy little conversation, Kristian and host Lior Phillips chat about developing a frenetic performance style despite often playing acoustic guitar solo, his punk leanings in his younger years, the struggles of maintaining relationships while on tour, the way he's changed his tour life as he's grown older, and the horses he raises back in Sweden. Head here for more info on The Tallest Man On Earth, and his new album, I Love You. It's a Fever Dream. This week's episode is sponsored by BandBox. With festival season in full swing, this week's episode offers a peak into what makes one of these massive musicals tick. Our first interview of the week features Pitchfork's executive director of festivals and activations, Adam Krefman. In addition to offering a preview of this year's Pitchfork Music Festival, Adam calls in to chat about everything from how he and his team can keep offering more and more options and massive lineups, the festival's connections to the surrounding community, and partnerships with local charities and organizations—including Young Chicago Authors. Speaking of which, our second interview comes to you from the offices of Young Chicago Authors—an organization known internationally for its connections to artists ranging from Chance the Rapper to Jamila Woods. But equally importantly, it should be known for its work using creative writing to help young people from all backgrounds to understand the power of their stories and make an impact on their community. From poetry and rap workshops to open mics, Young Chicago Authors is a crackling hub of expression and performance. This week, booking manager Nicholas Ward and teaching artist E'mon Lauren chat about how poetry changed their lives, the sociopolitical power of performance, and hosting performances on-stage at this year's Pitchfork Music Festival. Head here for more info on Young Chicago Authors, and here for E'mon Lauren's podcast, The Real Hoodwives of Chicago. Head here for more info on Pitchfork Music Festival. This week's episode is sponsored by BandBox. Life on the road can be tough for any band, but few would be so transparent as to name a song "If This Tour Doesn't Kill You, I Will". While that title might make it seem like PUP are a ball of tension, the Canadian punk outfit balance that frenetic energy with real joy and a vibrant sense of humor. This week, we chat with two halves of the band, as Stefan Babcock and Zack Mykula call in to discuss keeping spirits up in the van, how bands like Thursday and The Flatliners inspired them, quitting day jobs, and the incremental success of underdog punk life. Head here for more info on PUP, their tour dates, and their latest album, Morbid Stuff. This week's episode is sponsored by BandBox. This week we're joined by none other than Kevin McHale—a delightful human being who many first came to know in his role as Artie on the beloved musical TV mainstay Glee. But you may not know that Kevin has a long history in pop music, and continued to write his own music while working on Glee. Kevin's about to release the latest results from that effort in the form of a brand new solo EP, Boy. In this week’s giggly conversation, Kevin chats about his boy band past, what it was like developing his own voice while singing other people’s songs on TV, the grueling reality of the Glee tour, seeing Jessica Simpson and Ricky Martin as a kid, and so much more.
