Listen, we've seen 9-1-1 make some wild choices before—but this season finale? Nah.In this week's chaotic, heartfelt, and occasionally unhinged 9-1-1 Bonus Episode, subtitled "Bobby Deserved Better and So Did We," we're joined by special guest Sofia (@sadgayeddie) to unpack the emotional aftermath of the 9-1-1 season 8 finale. Spoiler alert: we are not okay. From Bobby's sudden death (with super Ebola?!) to half a dozen storylines getting steamrolled in a montage, and a production timeline that feels like it was assembled by raccoons with a typewriter, we've got a lot to say. The writing? Sloppy. The mourning? Nonexistent. The audience? Mad.There's rage, there's laughter, there's speculation on Buddie (as always), and a whole lot of love for Christopher Diaz.Expect unfiltered rants, fandom conspiracies, righteous indignation, and—of course—a little hope that season 9 will somehow pull it together (doubtful, but we dream). Back at it, Buddies! Here for a quick 'sode to share what happened when I went to the spring Austin Record Convention over the weekend. Many records were acquired, many meats and eats were consumed, and many memories were made. And no, I did not get to meet Raekwon or Jack White there (yes, that happened). BUT....I still had a good time and will share a brief recap here! Before that, I share some quick news on SURFACE NOISE and what to expect in the short term. Let's start the week off right, and right now, here on Vinyl Community Podcasts!

Welcome back Buddies! For this latest 'sode on Vinyl Community Podcasts, we have a guest and a conversation so rare, so valuable, so unique, that we had to enlist another host to reign in this collecting madness! Joined in the co-pilot seat by Spinz Vinyl (Jason), we speak with Wayne Johnson: co-owner and co-founder of Rockaway Records in Silver Lake, CA. Founded alongside brother Gary Johnson in 1979, Rockaway has seen the peaks, valleys, and rebirth of music on vinyl, while also growing, shrinking, and pivoting their business in various forms along the way. What once was the largest store in the Los Angeles area, Rockaway has diversified their focus to not only include the rarest of vinyl recordings, but also pieces of memorabilia that can only be dreamed about. We are talking much more than a Beatles' "Butcher" covers here: think BIGGER...think RARER....think UNBELIEVABLE pieces, unreal stories, and customers that would make the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame Museum blush: Jimmy Page, Steven Tyler, Robert Plant, Chris Robinson, and other music loyalty. Even Lucinda Williams once worked at this legendary store! We are talking items that the public rarely gets to see, with access and the ability to provide a revolving inventory that not few stores can compete with. Also in the conversation Wayne shares some great advice for those considering seriously purchasing unique vinyl or memorabilia, gives his thoughts on the emerging "slabbing" of vinyl, and offers his opinions on auction house buys and sourcing today versus 10, 15, 30, and even 45 years ago at the beginning of his journey. It's a fun walk down memory lane, and one you will find here RIGHT NOW on Vinyl Community Podcasts! Walk with us!

Buddies, you know how important quality and good sounding vinyl are to record collectors everywhere. Today on the pod I speak with Jeff Betten, founder of Hellbender Vinyl in Pittsburgh, PA who gives us a peak behind the curtain of their facility. Open for just under two years now, Hellbender has quickly developed a reputation for quality and creative solutions. As Jeff says "if you can dream it up, we can make it happen". Here Jeff shares the origins of Hellbender, and how an ambitious idea turned into a business plan, and then a full-fledged pressing plant in a town synonymous with building and making things. That local DNA isn't lost on them, including their mission statement: "Hellbent on quality. Hellbent on service. One of America's most trusted vinyl record pressing plants". Jeff is a musician himself and has been part of the Pittsburgh music scene for a bit, including time spent at a couple labels in the city. From large runs for household names acts, to smaller orders for indie bands just breaking in, Hellbender serves artists and their fans alike by creating great vinyl to share with the world. Buddies, Record Collectors, lend me your ears! For this latest 'sode on Vinyl Community Podcasts we resume my series "Mind of The Record Collector" which asks what we collect, why we collect it, and how we find it. Our guest today aims to touch all three tenets, and that is Josh Norrid - CEO/Owner of Hi-Fidelity Records in Tulsa, OK. Josh has a story familiar to many in the Vinyl Community: how a passion for this format and the music that comes from it lead him to work at record stores, for record companies, and eventually to open and operate his own business selling the best of the best Audiophile and high-end records available in the market today. Josh cut his teeth as a buyer at Josey Records, then learned directly from the pulpit (literally) of Chad Kassem's Acoustic Sounds/Analogue Productions operations in Salina, KS, before finally taking the leap in founding his own online business. Josh shares his personal journey as a collector along that road and shares his thoughts on the hobby today, how he sources his inventory, and even shares how he's added 21st century social marketing techniques to put the best pieces in the hands of the best collectors anywhere. Josh has a burgeoning presence on social media, including his own YouTube channel sharing information, tips, and details he's honed in his 20 years plus in the business. We know you'll enjoy this latest "Mind of The Record Collector" as much as we did! Aloha Buddies! Back at the control deck here on Vinyl Community Podcasts to talk about a topic on my mind lately: why is there gatekeeping in this Vinyl Community of ours? For this convo I'm joined by Friend of the Show (FOS) Matt from the YouTube channel Vinyl Reckoning as we explore the whats and whys as to how record collecting is a hobby often prone to tactics, commentaries, and attitudes that can not be as inviting or inclusive as we'd hope it can be. Is this a generational thing? Does every hobby seem to have so-called "gatekeeping" to new entries young and old? Or is it just a bi-product of our internet culture run amok? We also extend the conversation to whether or not this attitude by the few affects the many in the form of gaslighting people who are simply wanting to share their vinyl journey with others online; be it on YouTube, forum boards, or social media platforms. Personally I've seen it push people out of the community (a real shame), and been on the receiving end of it from a small handful of people myself. Welcome back, Buddies! Hitting the ground running here with a mini 'sode talking about my own walk in the premium reissue market - namely UHQR - and how that series and the aims of other labels under the "audiophile" banner are pushing our vinyl appetites (and wallets) into places that require some real examination about the long term viability of those efforts. Based on some smaller direct conversations I've had with others in the community at large, I'm not alone in wondering what some of these labels are thinking, and I share some thoughts here only on Vinyl Community Podcasts! Buddies! I had the great fortune to befriend the latest guest on "Mind of The Record Collector' during my latest visit to the Austin Record Convention in May. Ari Crane has been collecting records for several decades, traversing the country in search of the obscure, the unusual, and the rare pieces of wax many of us only hear about. A fixture on the record show circuit, the stories Ari shares here are GOLD (just like the ones he shared in Austin with me during our first meeting). He's been a record store owner, served as Consignment Director of Vinyl Records and Music Memorabilia for Heritage Auctions, and now leads his latest endeavor - Vinyl4Vets.com - putting vinyl and means to listen to it into the hands of the heroes who serve this country. It's a wide-ranging talk, including why Ari believes encapsulation (ie "slabbing") will move a section of the hobby forward in a way similar to sports cards, comics, etc., and he may even pull out some mega rare records in his own collection that he's decided to archive in this fashion. All this and MORE, here on Vinyl Community Podcasts and "Mind of The Record Collector"! Love it or leave it, the series Mind of The Record (er, Music) Collector is back on the airwaves of Vinyl Community Podcasts! This spin around the turntable features our guest Steve Herold, a lifelong collector of music in the physical form. His pursuit of music extends beyond our beloved vinyl - of late he's been feverishly pursuing compact discs for many of the same reasons we got back into vinyl 10-15 years ago. You'll hear about how his collection(s) started in earnest back in the day, the origins of his YouTube channel, touch on where are some of the best places to find cd's and vinyl present themselves during his work travels, and a few references to some Van Halen collectibles (of which he has a few). Can you feel it? A seismic shift under our feet, Buddies! For the latest edition of Mind of The Record Collector, I'm joined by the Vinyl Geek himself - Eric Callero - from the popular YouTube channel Vinyl Rewind. Eric is no stranger to YouTube nor our obsession collecting our favorite music on vinyl (and other formats). Vinyl Rewind is a channel that touches on many fun and interesting points of not just our vinyl collection obsession, but deep dives into bands and albums we all love, interviews with artists and creators alike, and does it all with a great presentation style that keeps us coming back for more! Recently crossing the 253k subscriber plateau, and closing in on 500 videos to boot, Eric's channel influences many in the Vinyl Community across our various collecting journeys, and often shares information new to fans old and young alike. In this 'sode we cover what started Eric's journey on YouTube + making videos, trace his fondness for music on the physical format back many moons ago, and why all these years later how finding great music on vinyl is STILL tough to beat. Back in the building Buddies with another pod-exclusive presentation here on Vinyl Community Podcasts! Touching on a topic that's recently been in the news with Billie Eilish and her recent Billboard interview talking about the cash grab that persists with the overproduction of vinyl color and cover variants. Sure, there's a free market component to this topic, but she was also talking about the environmental effects that producing so many different vinyl variations is having from a sustainability perspective. Spurred in part by a recent Melinda Murphy video touching on it (link below), I give my thoughts on the topic, share some poor man's Mr. Science behind vinyl, and share some examples of albums & artists mayyyyybe not needing to make so many copies of their works (yes, Taylor Swift comes up). The record keeps spinning, Buddies! Another brief pod-only show here on Vinyl Community Podcasts, this time joined by friend of the pod Jason (Spinz Vinyl) who recently took the plunge to selling records on the ecommerce platform Whatnot. If you are unfamiliar, Whatnot is an application/website that is hosted by individual sellers (sometimes including brick & mortar shop owners) selling their wares through the medium. It extends beyond vinyl records and includes sports cards, video games, clothing, shoes (and a ton more). Jason recently tried his hand at selling records in conjunction with his partnership with MION Records, and held two auctions right out of the gate. Here he shares he thoughts on the platform, why he is selling records there, how he chooses titles to sell there, and (most importantly) would he do it again (SPOILER: he is on March 30th at 12pm PST/3pm EST). Aloha Buddies! With the recent announcement that subscription-based vinyl service BANDBOX was closing up shop amidst bankruptcy proceedings, it led me to consider what the vinyl subscription + service space looks like past, present, and future. Vinyl Me, Please is the lion in the vinyl-curation/subscription business, but there are several smaller businesses that are putting exclusive and distinct records in the hands of their customers through this business model, and adding their own unique "spin" (#dadjoke) to how they go about it. This pod will walk through that and also identify other potential threats to this distinct business model out in the greater vinyl landscape. In one of the most overdue 'sodes in Vinyl Community Podcasts history, we finally - FINALLY - get the OG of the Vinyl Community - Brandon (MrHoffame) in the hot seat of the VCP exclusive series: Mind of The Record Collector. Brandon was literally one of the first in the community to begin sharing his collecting journey on YouTube and taking us along for the ride. Like many, I've learned a great deal from Brandon over the years: first through his videos themselves, then as I've been fortunate to get to know him personally, outside of the "VC". In fact, I've definitely "borrowed" several practices + approaches to how he's built and shaped his collection over the years. In a word, his collection is INSANE. Not only that, he has one of the best listening + collection rooms out there. We touch on that, plus talk about those quiet early days of slowing finding others online to share the collecting journey with, discuss the different "levels" to collecting we've both experienced, and share another bi-product of his collection prowess: his new curation venture of building collections for others (Sounds of You). All that plus some lighting round questions to put some cool water on the hot seat, NOW on Vinyl Community Podcasts! Aloha Buddies! One constant in the ever changing record collecting hobby of ours is the pre-imminent tool we use to grow and develop our collections: Discogs. Unquestionably the largest vinyl record database out there, it has made it easier and more accessible to collect our favorite pieces of music, predominantly on vinyl. Likewise, the marketplace aspect of the platform has helped to bridge the divide from the rare and limited releases to collectors across the globe. In the past few weeks, the head leadership at Discogs has popped up on a couple Vinyl Community channels to discuss their business, and the timing of these chats without any high level launch/product change/etc. is curious (to me). Another channel in the community (Tom c/o High Rant District) also noticed this and recently shared some takes that pushed my curiosity into overdrive. This 'sode talks about those confluences, my own thoughts on Discogs in it's current state, and things that I strongly feel need to be addressed to continue to give buyers and sellers alike confidence in using the platform (even in the face of next to no competition in this space; a space they have essentially created themselves). Would love to hear your thoughts on this, and Discogs in general, so don't be shy and reach out to my social media channels and share away! Great people just walked through the door! Hey Buddies, back again with another 'sode of my series on Vinyl Community Podcasts titled "Mind of The Record Collector". This spin around the turntable I'm joined by one of the best Vinyl Community members on YouTube, Melinda Murphy. One of the reasons I started my own YouTube channel was from watching Melinda stand hers up, how she treats her audience, and the great job she does sharing the journey of building her record collection. We touch on all of that, plus what made her start her channel in the first place. To close out the chat Melinda sits in the (kind of) hot seat for a set of fun lightning round questions. What are you waiting for? This episode starts NOW! Welcome back for another pod-exclusive 'sode here on Vinyl Community Podcasts. This time we approach the genre of jazz from a different point of view. Fueled by a jazz reissue renaissance the past few years, many experienced and newer collectors alike are getting into the genre at their own speed. That opens up some key questions for many of us: What is it like slowly dipping your toes into this genre? Where are good places/sources to learn about it? And where should someone who is new to the genre begin their journey? Most of our panel for this show finds ourselves in a similar boat. Joined by Patrick (pbthal), Arnaldo (fidelios_frequency), Louie Golden, and Rocco Richardson (Pieces of Vinyl), we share our own experiences in gently building our knowledge base and collections with this diverse genre. Topics covered here include: (1) How Did Jazz Enter Your Life (and Your Collection)? (2) Why Jazz, Why Now: What is Driving People to Jazz Today? (3) Barriers to Entry to Those New to Jazz? (4) Best Recommendations to Someone Just Starting Out? A lot of good information sharing in this pod-exclusive chat, here on Vinyl Community Podcasts! Tell us what you think! Spin the Black Circle, Buddies! This pod-only exclusive features a conversation on (arguably) the last great American rock band - Pearl Jam. Joined by two other fans in Vance (zeppearl) and Jason Arsenault, we talk about the anticipation building for the new album DARK MATTER out April 19th, the exclusive release for #recordstoreday the following day, the new tour hitting several cities in the US and abroad, and a few other band rabbit holes that popped up during the chat. We promise, no Eddie Vedder impressions were recorded during this 'sode (I think). Jump on in, the water is warm, for this latest episode on Vinyl Community Podcasts! We're bringing it back, leaning back into the series here on Vinyl Community Podcasts that asks what we collect, why we collect it, and how we find it - Mind of the Record Collector. For this installment, we are joined by a great guy in the community - J.C. - from the channel "The Flipside - Vinyl Community with J.C. - to learn how he has collecting sweet black gold over the years. A collector since 1984, J.C. has already rebuilt his collection again, and hits the pavement hard (and often) looking for those elusive records on his list. These stops can include multiple daily trips to Savers, just as much as visiting his favorite local shop - Purchase Street Records - where he often volunteers his time just to hang and help. J.C. is a big proponent of the community, and keeping it positive, and we spend some time not only learning about that, but also where this love of vinyl + music began some time ago. It's a great chat with a great contributor to the Vinyl Community. Recently I had an opportunity to catch up with the mastermind behind the Concert Buddie YouTube channel and Vinyl Community Podcasts - Chance. Fresh on the heels of the 1st Anniversary of the podcast feed, this is the first exclusive interview he's given on the OTHER side of the microphone. Lots of fun! Buddies - to celebrate a milestone here at the pod, we are extremely lucky to be joined by guest numero uno here on VCP: Matt Sands, co-owner of Gold Pan Records in Hillsboro, IL. But Matt brought two of his best pals to this episode to discuss one of the best things about this Vinyl Community of ours: fellowship. Joined us on this voyage are Sam "The Psych Professor", regular companion on Matt's YouTube channel, and their friend and shop owner of Noble Records in Matthews, North Carolina, Dillon Smith (aka The Silver Button Sniper), fresh off joining the ranks of the 100k Sub Club. We discuss how these guys started their respective journeys, and how YouTube and the Vinyl Community at large helped them meet, become fast friends, and make them all better collectors (and store owners) for it. This was one of our favorite episodes, and a great way to kick off year Two of Vinyl Community Podcasts! On the serious tip, thank you for your support, encouragement, and patronage as this project has taken off and evolved. Each and every comment, like, download, and rating (yes, please rate us) helps fuel us to continue this project. It's no accident that it's called "Vinyl Community" Podcasts for a reason, and you, by listening and joining us for these programs, are most certainly a big part of that community. Army Athletic Director Mike Buddie returns to the show to talk all things Army Sports! He goes deep with us on what makes Army Baseball and Lacrosse so great, what's their secret sauce on recruiting, and how even after all of these teams' successes, they're still hungry for more. Then we get into the Michie Stadium rennovation, talk joining the American Athletic Conference for football, and celebrate the team's success winning the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy. Friends, we've got a great show this week! Do. Not. Miss. This. One. Go Army! Beat Navy!!!
The aftershow to the latest SURFACE NOISE episode features some talk of industry data in 2023 for performance in streaming and vinyl sales, possibly answering why the labels continue to focus much of their energy on reissues (hint: because they are proven + bankable sales), and we share some records that have found their ways of late into our collections. Plus, Jose finally resurfaces in the Vinyl Community and we hear where he's been and what he's been up to, and why he stayed in the car to talk to us instead of feasting on burgers with his buddies. Riddles galore, on this latest freestyle session! Back to talking the issues of the day in the ever changing hobby of record collecting, this latest 'sode of SURFACE NOISE touches on the abundance of reissues available today - which albums are being reissued too frequently, which albums would we like to see get the reissue treatment, and are they what you would think? For this show Jason Roxas, Arnaldo (fidelios_frequency) and Concert Buddie were joined by Kevin from the YouTube channel "Me, Myself, & My Vinyl" who shares with us a plight far too many record collectors can empathize with: trying to stay in front of a growing record collection that may have outgrown our space. Hear how Kevin's doing on that journey, and from our dais if they too have been down this same road. All that and more on SURFACE NOISE, just a click away! Touching on a topic some in the record collectors consider risky, taboo, or comes with a negative stigma attached: flipping records. For this latest episode of Vinyl Community Podcasts, we talk to William The Flipper (Pumping Vinyl - YouTube) in Omaha about how he approaches flipping records on the regular, his discovery of an launch of his YouTube channel, and some of his experiences (good or not good) flipping records online, at record shows, etc. I think it's safe to say most record collectors have upsold pieces or finds along their journey, but this point of view from William will be sure to inform, educate, or maybe even give inspiration to others who've thought about flipping records to subsidize larger grail purchases or even as a side hustle. Joined by regulars Jason Roxas, Arnaldo (fidelios_frequency), David Bianco (Safe & Sound Texas Audio Excursion) and one of the OG's of the Vinyl Community, Brandon (MrHoffame), we tackled the following first world questions in record collecting: (1) Has FOMO eased in the record collecting community lately? (2) Right Direction/Wrong Direction: we discuss parts of the hobby going in the right direction, and others not doing the same headed in the wrong direction (3) We each discuss a grail record we acquired in 2023, and what big grail we are hunting for in 2024.
