Transforming e-Waste into Sustainable Tech Solutions this Earth Day and Beyond

Guest post by Alex Rice, Field Product Manager at Dell Technologies In today's world, electronic devices are essential, improving our lives and connecting us like never before. While this digital evolution has brought about incredible advancements and conveniences, it also presents the challenge of managing electronic waste (e-waste) generated by digital lives. As we mark Earth Day, we're once again reminded of the urgency that technological innovation and the need to protect the planet must go hand-in-hand by embracing sustainable solutions and responsible recycling. we can enjoy the benefits of technology while safeguarding the environment for future generations. The European Union, a global leader in environmental policy, finds itself grappling with the issue of e-waste. According to the UN, e-waste volumes are growing five times faster than e-waste recycling, with an 82% jump since 2010. The European Commission's circular economy action plan offers a glimmer of hope with its promotion of repair and reuse initiatives. However, businesses in Ireland that are expected to be part of the solution are often caught between regulatory pressures, financial constraints, and evolving consumer demands. For Irish business decision makers often the question is how can we reconcile the pressing need to innovate and remain competitive while being environmentally responsible? Thankfully, the answer is not about choosing one or the other. Instead, it lies in reimagining our relationship with technology and embracing an end-to-end approach to sustainability: where resources are valued, products are designed with sustainable materials and waste is minimised. 1. Smarter product design to promote circularity Product design plays a significant role in reducing waste and thinking about how to reduce production costs in the long-term. A sustainable approach begins with creating guidelines for how components are designed before they go on to form complete systems. Product design dictates how practical it is to reuse and refurbish these components or to harvest recyclable materials at the end of a device's life. Designing with durability and modularity in mind means that parts can come back through a services network before re-entering the supply chain, to be used to repair and refurbish systems. For customers and consumers, there is the added benefit of being able to purchase these products at a lower price point. For components that cannot be easily reused, manufacturers should focus on easy disassembly paired with clear markings, minimised paintings and coatings and simplified material choice. This makes it easier for the recycling industry to recover more material, more quickly. 2. Design with circularity in mind Information technology is heavily dependent on finite raw materials, including minerals like lithium or cobalt, which are associated with high energy, water consumption and environmental damage during extraction. For example, at Dell, we design our products for easy repair, reuse, and recycling at end-of-life to keep products and materials in circulation for longer to help reduce pressure on resources and prevent waste. We use recycled and/or renewable materials from innovative sources to help lower the environmental impact of our products and packaging. Every pound of steel, aluminium, plastic and copper that we recover is a pound of material that doesn't have to be extracted from the ground. Demand for alternatives is increasing, particularly as they do not deplete additional natural resources and emit fewer greenhouse gases in their production and during the product life cycle. For example, low emissions aluminium and recycled cobalt are being used in our AI PCs. Another alternative material is a bioplastic derived from the production of paper, which is used as new component for technology casings. One of the most immediate initiatives is for the IT design process to operate as a closed loop model, which keeps products and materia...

British rock band Sports Team was robbed at gunpoint in broad daylight on Monday when they had stopped for coffee in California on the first day of their US tour. The band — consisting of frontman Alex Rice, guitarists Rob Knaggs and Henry Young, bassist Oli Dewdney, drummer Al Greenwood, and keyboardist Ben Mack — touched down in California ahead of their first gig in Sacramento on Tuesday. But after stopping at a Starbucks in Vallejo — nearly an hour away from their show — at 9 a.m., the band's van was ransacked by a group of armed men.

Friday I'm in love? Friday you've got a new pod!!Hello, hello, it's time for episode 8 of Adventures In New Music with Chris and Andy, the podcast that takes two albums from 2020 and throws it's opinions of said albums around until we decide if it's is a hit or a miss.On this weeks podder the boys are discussing The Archer by Alexandra Savior and Mercury nominated Deep Down Happy by Sports Team. The Archer is Alexandra Savior's second album following on from 2017's Belladonna of Sadness which was co-written by Alex Turner from Arctic Monkeys. Alexandra's journey to get to this album is a fascinating, and somewhat heartbreaking story but this really adds to the overall beauty of this stunning dreamy, cinematic album. Alexandra Savior has described her style as a "feminist angst horror film feel” and who are we to disagree?! Deep Down Happy is the debut album by London based scamps Sports Team. Delivering an energetic and frantic sound that harks back to early Britpop, there is a lot of fun to be had in this album. The band, and in particular lead singer Alex Rice, have turned heads with there raucous live performances and we don't think it'll be too long before you see Sports Team gracing many a main stage at festivals, once they get up and running again. Couple of live videos from out artists of the week that are worth having a look at. Both of these are live from Paste Studio. What a cracking channel for live sessions, you can easily get lost down the rabbit hole on their channel.Alexandra Savior - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y2aCCz0AvJo Sports Team - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7z9_yYsqYN8The Mercury Music Prize nominations were revealed this week and we have a bit of a confab about that. Who the front runners are and which ones standout to us. Third nomination for Michael Kiwanuka, is this his year? You certainly wouldn't bet against it... Did you know Taylor Swift has released an album this week? Course you did. But guess what? It's bloomin' great mate! Ol' Tay Tay has collabed with (amongst others) Aaron and Bryce Dessner, Justin Vernon and Josh Kaufman and what a result we've been presented with. Miss Swift has really Shuck It Up with this album and treated it like a Blank Space. See what I did?! I know. 3 on 10 at best...sorry team.As well as our albums Chris has been busy watching Defending Jacob on Apple TV, which reveals a lovely little musical surprise at the end of the series, and has also been listening to the wonderful new Phoebe Bridgers album 'Punisher'. By eck it's good! One of our previous album artist choices, Poppy (who if you haven't come across you really should have a look at her work - she's crackers!) has done a rockin' cover of All The Things She Said by Tatu. This is really worth a listen! And did someone ask for spider related banter? In the biggest Big Smoke Music Weekly episode to date, we bring you 2 interviews from some of the UK’s best Indie acts, recorded across a jam-packed weekend at BBC 6 Music Festival! First on the bill is our exclusive sit down with Sports Team.  3 of the 6-strong gang join us - Rob Knaggs, Al Greenwood and Alex Rice - to chat ahead of their eagerly anticipated debut album, ‘Deep Down Happy’.  The band tell-all on their lighthearted take on life and how that bleeds into their quick witted writing and onstage flair. We ask them about mixing things up with fans through mad last-minute guerrilla gigs, and how their tunes come from a place of fun-loving madness. The Orielles speak with us a couple of weeks after the release of their second album, ‘Disco Volador’.  An album dripping in disco, funk and cosmic pop tastiness, Sidonie and and Esme from the band run us through the influences behind the release and the stress that comes in putting a second album together.  We find out about the mad anticipation a band can feel ahead of playing new material out on the road. We have these two interviews, plus gig reviews from across the festival, including  The Big Moon’s magical set at the Roundhouse’s Sackler Space, and Sunday’s bash down at Camden’s Electric Ballroom which saw blistering sets from Warmduscher, Squid and Bombay Bicycle Club! And... as coronavirus spreads, we look at how it is starting to hit the music world. Lauran Hibberd talks us through the impact of SXSW being cancelled and what that means for up and coming bands. Welcome to the show!

White hat hackers roam the internet in search of security vulnerabilities. Unlike their black hat counterparts, their goal isn’t to penetrate those vulnerabilities: it’s to make website and business owners aware of their existence. But Alex Rice, co-founder of bug bounty organization HackerOne, explains that they’re playing a dangerous game. Without a culture of vulnerability disclosure, white hat hackers can’t do their job without risking severe legal penalties. Alex Rice sits down with us to chat about how our pursuit of online safety might be causing harm as well as good.

So far, digital good Samaritans have reported almost 3,000 bugs. Alex Rice is chief technology officer of HackerOne, the company that runs the disclosure portal for DoD, and Reina Staley is co-founder of the Defense Digital Service. Well, here we are. It’s been one heck of a year, but now it’s time for us to decide the best games we’ve played in 2016. Let’s lay some ground rules. First, our top ten considers any game played in 2016, not just games released in 2016. Second, everyone brings their personal top ten games of the year, and from those, we will decide upon the Ward Podcast’s top ten of the year. Lastly, once the ten games of the year have been set, we will create an award specific to each game. And that will put a close to the Ward Podcast for 2016. We’d like to thank everyone who joined us on the podcast this year: James Gross, Will Blanton, Momin Khan & Mike Odum, Ruthie Edwards, Sam Loeschen, Nick Nundahl & Joe Wetmore, Andy Bowers, Auverin Morrow, Rich Atlas, Henry Hoffman, and David Byers. This is an update on our earlier podcast detailing the situation between Apple and the FBI. As you’ll recall, Apple rejected a judge's order to help the FBI hack into the iPhone of one of the San Bernardino shooters, calling the action "an overreach by the U.S. government.” The FBI had now dropped its case against Apple, claiming they were able to successfully break into the phone. LA Times just reported Apple wants the FBI to reveal how they hacked into the San Bernadino phone but so far the FBI hasn't said how they did it or who they hired for help, though the consensus is it was the Israeli cybersecurity firm, Cellebrite.  "One way or another, Apple needs to figure out the details," said Justin Olsson, product counsel at security software maker AVG Technologies. "The responsible thing for the government to do is privately disclose the vulnerability to Apple so they can continue hardening security on their devices.” “There is very little debate that it is in everyone’s best interest that Apple find out about this vulnerability and everyone should be asking why that is not the case,” said Alex Rice, chief technology officer at San Francisco security company HackerOne. Does Apple have a right to know how the FBI broke into the phone? Tune-in and find out!
