277 When Cults Split [Part2] The ICC Disfellowships Kip McKean who joins new RCW splinter groupThis week on Apologetics Profile, Watchman senior apologist Dr. Brady Blevins continues his conversation with counter-cult apologist Steve Matthews about the recent split of the International Christian Church (ICC) and its disfellowshipping of its charismatic and controversial founder, Kip McKean. The breakaway sect of the ICC now calls itself the Restored Church Worldwide and in January, made a surprising move to accept and "restore" McKean as a member in good standing. Here on part two Steve will share with us the details of the split and give us helpful insights as to how we can recognize and prevent heretical doctrines and practices from deceiving and dividing the body of Christ. To hear more about Kip McKean and the ICC, you can listen to our previous episodes with Steve here. This week and next on the Profile, Watchman senior apologist Dr. Brady Blevins talks with counter-cult apologist Steve Matthews about the recent split of the International Christian Church (ICC), founded by the controversial and charismatic leader Kip McKean. Not only did the ICC recently split, it also disfellowshipped McKean himself for inappropriate behavior, some of which McKean has publicly acknowledged. The new breakaway from the ICC now calls itself the Restored Church Worldwide (RCW). In addition, this past January, the RCW "restored" McKean, not in a position of leadership, but as a member. Steve shares with us some of the details and background of the split and the history of McKean's association with the ICOC, the ICC, and now the RCW. For more background about the ICC and ICOC, you can listen to our previous episodes with Steve here. In this episode Dr Clark dons his official Heidelglasses to answer more texts and emails regarding the relationship between the Holy Spirit and the Old Testament believers, about when we should call someone a heretic, about what to do when there is not a nearby confessional Reformed congregation, about how we should think about the role of the function of the law under the Old Covenant, about Joe Boot's claims about "general equity theonomy," about whether the Scots Confession teaches baptismal regeneration, about taking communion to shut ins, about whether justification makes one ready for heaven, about the basis on which we accept Christian doctrine, and about the application of the Abrahamic covenant in the New Covenant and how to understand the continuity and progress of redemptive history relative to the Abrahamic covenant. The opening audio features Jon Payne from the recent Gospel Reformation Network conference. This episode of the Heidelcast is sponsored by the Heidelberg Reformation Association. This was one of the most notable sermons which Spurgeon ever preached. Despite his expectation that it might damage or even destroy the circulation of his printed sermons, it sold tens of thousands of copies over the years. It strikes at one particular error, and consistently addresses an underlying problem. The particular error is the doctrine embedded in the Church of England of baptismal regeneration- the underlying problem, and one which Spurgeon addresses repeatedly in the sermon, is that of a lack of honesty and integrity in our convictions and commitments. The sermon is not bitter in tone, but it potently manifests the spirit of a man who is deeply persuaded of the danger of the lie he exposes, and desperate that sinners should realise that it is faith alone in Christ alone by which a sinner can be saved. He wants the people of God actually to know what they believe, and to speak and live accordingly.

Today, the guys want to make an inroad to a topic that is surrounded by much confusion even among Christians: baptism! The confusion relates in part to the current trend of downplaying baptism. Not only does this indicate confusion about what baptism is, but it also causes the confusion to deepen and proliferate. The downplaying of baptism is rooted in a well-meaning course correction to theological errors that over-emphasized baptism, such as the doctrine of baptismal regeneration. But what Christians need at this point is not to over-correct their way into neglecting the rich truths surrounding baptism, but to construct a robust doctrine that values baptism while knowing how to respond to those who consider it necessary for salvation. This notion of baptism being necessary for salvation is at the heart of the theological error the guys want to zero in on today, namely, that of baptism regeneration. Baptismal regeneration is one of a few major views of baptism that are commonly held, and it maintains that the act of baptism is sufficient in itself (by conferring or completing grace) to save the soul. The Roman Catholic Church holds to this view, whereas Lutherans hold that baptism is a sign and seal of the New Covenant and those in a Reformed or Covenantal camp see baptism as a culmination of faith - expressing faith, bringing believers under the care of the church, and functioning in a way analogous to a royal coronation that decares rather than creating the reality of kingship. The guys have spent a lot of time discussing the doctrinal problems of baptismal regeneration not only with Roman Catholics, but also with members of the Church of Christ, who hold that baptism is necessary for salvation. This position, of course, has logical shortcomings; after all, what about those who are converted with no time or ability to be baptized? The position also contradicts the overall teaching of Scripture regarding both baptism and salvation, and the guys explain how to understand the true context of passages used in support of baptismal regeneration. Finally, they celebrate the beautiful whole-Bible threads of meaning that baptism picks up, baptism's picture of the gospel, and the connection between baptism and the great commission! If there is one area where the church has been deceived, it has to do with the Gospel and what it really means to be born again, especially what baptism is. They don't read what the Bible truly says about baptism, or that everyone in the Bible after the cross got baptized right away the same day! Like Jesus said, "The one who believes and is baptized shall be saved," and He said, "Go and make disciples, baptizing them." But we don't obey our Lord Jesus and His words. We obey our traditions. One of the biggest problems that keeps people from obeying the Word when it comes to baptism, is the lie we see in the Catholic church - "baptismal regeneration." We know that "baptismal regeneration" is a LIE. Putting water on the head of small babies doesn't make them born again! And this is the problem in the Catholic church and in the Lutheran church - that they have made baptism something that "saves" in itself. And no, I don't believe in that. We have NEVER preached "baptismal regeneration." But, because of this lie, many people have gone away from the truth about baptism completely, "throwing the baby out with the bath water," and gone to the other ditch saying baptism is just a symbol. No! Baptism in itself, without FAITH and REPENTANCE, doesn't save! But yes, baptism is PART of SALVATION! And this is what we're talking about in this next podcast, where we look at the POWER in baptism vs. "baptismal regeneration." We also look at SALVATION. What is salvation? And we look at how salvation in the Bible is ALWAYS in three tenses - you "got" saved, you "get" saved, and the one who holds on to the end "shall be" saved. If you don't understand this, that salvation is more than just going to heaven, you will not understand where baptism fits in. Who do you want to follow - your traditions and what other people are saying - or do you want to follow Christ and what He says in His Word? Please - this next podcast can open your eyes and help you to see the truth. If you ask me personally, it's the best podcast we have done until now._______________________________________________________________________________________________
