‘Everyone Watches Women's Sports' Those are the words on a shirt that you might have seen celebrities wearing when courtside at a WNBA game or while cheering during a goal made at a NWSL match. And it does seem to be true, that everyone has their eyes on women's sports. The hope, of course, is that this will help to grow the leagues, the interest, the investment, so that the future of women's sports will never be in doubt. And there are people right here in the Bay Area that are taking that declaration to heart - The Bay Area Women's Sports Initiative has been doing the good work of supporting young women in the sports world for years, by engaging with the community, with the coaches and the teachers, and by encouraging girls to take up space on the field or the court. BAWSI is supported in part by the Silicon Valley Community Foundation, the nation's largest community foundation. SVCF donated $3.1 billion dollars to local nonprofits in 2023, and has supported BAWSI for over 15 years. To talk more on what is affectionately called BAWSI, I'm joined by Dana Weintraub, Co-CEO of the Bay Area Women's Sports Initiative, and Brisa Rojas, a BAWSI alum and board member.
The WNBA is coming to the Bay Area! Fans will have a new women's team to cheer for, at a moment when female superstars like Caitlin Clark have captivated basketball lovers of all ages. As part of KQED's Youth Takeover week, high school athletes Mahi Jariwala, Jessie Lin and Olivia Ma bring together a sports journalist, a basketball coach and a Title IX attorney to talk about the impact of women's basketball in the Bay Area – and the arrival of a new professional team. Guests: Mahi Jariwala, senior, Monte Vista High School Jessie Lin, senior, Woodside High School Olivia Ma, junior, BASIS Independent Fremont Marisa Ingemi, women's sports reporter, San Francisco Chronicle Kim Turner, co-CEO of the nonprofit Bay Area Women's Sports Initiative; Title IX attorney Jeff Addiego, vice president, Warriors Basketball Academy
Ken interviews Amy Williams, the CEO at Citizens of Humanity Group, for this Flight of The Retail Pilot. Amy joined Citizens of Humanity as the company's President in 2009 and ultimately assumed the Chief Executive Officer position in 2015, overseeing the business for the company's family of brands including Citizens of Humanity and AGOLDE. Williams previous experience includes Executive Vice President at Lucky Brand Jeans and Senior Vice President of Product Development and Design for Gap Inc. Williams serves on the board at Girls Inc of Greater Los Angeles and empowerHER. She is an advisor to Every Mother Counts and Bay Area Women's Sports Initiative. Key Takeaways Include:1. Bridging Business and Design: Amy's career trajectory highlights the importance of bridging the gap between business strategy and creative design in the retail industry. She emphasized the significance of understanding consumer preferences, maintaining commercial viability, and fostering collaboration between merchandising and design teams. This balance between creativity and business acumen is crucial for successful product development and brand growth.2. Entrepreneurial Leadership: Amy's transition from corporate roles to entrepreneurial ventures demonstrates her adaptability and leadership versatility. She thrived in both structured corporate environments, such as at Gap Inc., and in more dynamic, entrepreneurial settings, such as at Lucky Brand and Citizens of Humanity. Her ability to navigate different organizational cultures and drive results underscores the importance of entrepreneurial spirit and strategic vision in leadership roles.3. Strategic Distribution Expansion: At Citizens of Humanity, Amy was tasked with developing a distribution strategy to expand beyond traditional wholesale channels. This involved exploring opportunities in specialty retail and e-commerce while working closely with company founders and private equity stakeholders. Amy's focus on diversifying distribution channels and adapting to evolving market trends reflects the agility and foresight required to drive brand expansion and maximize growth potential in the competitive retail landscape.4. Sustainable Growth and Brand Integrity: Amy emphasizes the importance of sustainable growth and brand integrity. Citizens of Humanity and A Golde focus on quality products, investing in design, and maintaining high standards in distribution. They prioritize long-term brand development over short-term financial gains, taking inspiration from European brands that prioritize generational development.5. Strategic Expansion and Retail Experience: The company aims to expand its retail presence thoughtfully, focusing on creating experiential and lifestyle-oriented stores rather than rapid expansion for the sake of growth. They seek to deepen relationships with existing retail partners, improve retail presentations, and explore opportunities for retail expansion in select locations.6. Marketing and Brand Building: Instead of traditional marketing methods, Citizens of Humanity and A Goldie rely on organic brand building and word-of-mouth promotion. They prioritize product quality and strategic partnerships with tastemakers, avoiding paid advertising and focusing on creating a desirable brand image through events, partnerships, and thoughtful product placement.7. Focus on Technology and Operations: While the company acknowledges the importance of technology in advancing their business, they admit to being more focused on other aspects due to their smaller team size. However, they recognize the need for technological advancements, particularly in areas such as inventory management and data analytics. Improving inventory accuracy, tracking product performance, and optimizing operational efficiency through technology are seen as key priorities for future growth and scalability.8. Commitment to Sustainability: Citizens of Humanity and Agolde have made sustainability a core aspect of their brand identity. They prioritize responsible sourcing practices, including the use of regenerative cotton and recycled materials. This commitment extends beyond product quality to environmental stewardship, reflecting a broader ethos of corporate responsibility and long-term sustainability. Their approach demonstrates a blend of ethical considerations with business strategy, positioning them as leaders in sustainable fashion within the industry.

This is a black arts and culture site. We will be exploring the African Diaspora via the writing, performance, both musical and theatrical (film and stage), as well as the visual arts of Africans in the Diaspora and those influenced by these aesthetic forms of expression. I am interested in the political and social ramifications of art on society, specifically movements supported by these artists and their forebearers. It is my claim that the artists are the true revolutionaries, their work honest and filled with raw unedited passion. They are our true heroes. Ashay! My guest today is Christa Gannon. Christa is the Founder of Fresh Lifelines for Youth, Inc. (“FLY”). As a Stanford Law student in 1995, Christa volunteered with boys who were faced with spending most of their teenage years, and for some their entire lives, behind bars. She asked them what would prevent other youth from ending up like them, and their ideas became the basis for FLY. In 1998, Christa received the prestigious George Soros Foundation award, a two-year fellowship, to take the kids’ ideas, bolster them with best practices in youth development and crime prevention, and start a pilot program. The pilot was so successful that when the fellowship ended in 2000, Christa incorporated the project into a nonprofit. Today, Fresh Lifelines for Youth is an award-winning Bay Area nonprofit that each year serves approximately 2,500 youth ages 11-24 who are involved the juvenile justice system in 3 Bay Area counties. FLY educates young people about the law, supports them to become leaders among their peers, and gives them positive mentors and role models. Providing services at less than one tenth the cost of incarceration, FLY helps young people out of the pipeline to prison and onto a new path toward healthy, productive lives. FLY also helps local juvenile justice systems become more just, humane, and equitable. Christa has received numerous awards – no less than 34! - for her work at FLY, including the James Irvine Leadership Award, the Human Rights Award for the City of San Jose, Stanford Law School’s Inaugural Alumni Public Service Award, the Law Foundation’s Youth Advocate of the Year Award, a Bay Area Women of Influence Award, and induction as an Ashoka Fellow, one of the first in the field of Juvenile Justice in the United States. After serving as CEO of FLY for its first two decades, Christa now serves in a formal Founder role as an advocate and ambassador for FLY, helping with fundraising and investor relations, and working on special projects for FLY’s strategic plan, “Imagine 2030.” Christa holds a B.S. in sociology and law and society, graduated with honors from Stanford Law School, and is a member of the California Bar. Christa is also a wife, mother of two children, and basketball coach. Here’s what to expect during the episode: Nonprofit executive transitions are not necessarily thoughtful, planned, nor strategic. "I don't know anybody who can honestly say there hasn't been somebody in their life that helped them along," said Louise Renne, a lawyer who served as a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors and as San Francisco City Attorney. "And I try to pay it back by working with young people in public housing here in San Francisco."Renne took part in a panel discussion — "Bay Area Women in Politics" — hosted by the Bancroft Library's Oral History Center in July 2020. Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf and Shanelle Scales-Preston, who sits on the Pittsburg City Council, also spoke on the panel."I think all of us will say we have to be optimists to survive in these careers," said Schaaf. "It's what gets you out of bed in the morning because we also have to hold tremendous suffering and tragedy in our communities. That is also part of our jobs. But I want to see a world that is equitable and where everyone thrives. And when I talk about equity, I believe that structural racism is one of the biggest barriers to everything good that we want for the world. And that includes getting an actual representative democracy. It's not just about women, but it's also about people of color. It's about anyone who does not fit the dominant identity. And we have to start to reverse engineer those policies, those practices that have been in place forever that are maintaining these obstacles to people getting these opportunities."This discussion was part of the Bay Area Women in Politics Oral History Project, which highlights the work of women leaders in the Bay Area. "We really wanted to think about this project as a way to document the history of our region's political women, from elected officials to activists to campaign staffers to fundraisers," said Amanda Tewes, a historian and interviewer for the Oral History Center who is leading the project. "I think we can all agree that women are often the backbone of America's political work — and we felt it was important to record that."Listen to the discussion and a read a transcript on Berkeley News.
