A Confederacy of Psychopaths: Trump and His Enablers

The MAGA cult represents a profound public mental health crisis. Since 2017, Dr. Bandy Lee has raised the alarm about the pervasive influence of Donald Trump's psychopathy on his followers, coining the term "Trump contagion," and it may have affected people in your own circle. In her urgent book, The Psychology of Trump Contagion, Dr. Lee argues that the mental health implications of Trump's MAGA movement are significantly underestimated. With her extensive background in public sectors such as prisons and state hospitals, she has observed how toxic influences can spread. Rather than lifting those around them, healthy individuals risk adopting the pathologies of those with severe impairments—a dynamic she has witnessed in environments like street gangs or dysfunctional families, reminiscent of the Trump family itself. Trump's manipulative tactics leave many feeling trapped and powerless, distorting reality to maintain his grip on power. At the heart of Trump's pathology are his pronounced narcissism, violent tendencies, and deep-seated feelings of inadequacy—all exacerbated among his followers by societal stressors like the income inequality crisis. In Part 1 of our conversation, we delve into the dark psychology behind Trump and his enablers, including the lack of urgency by Nancy Pelosi during the first two impeachments, as this show warned, as well as the roles played by media executives, and corporate greed. This week's bonus show, out Saturday, for our Truth-Teller ($5/month) members and higher will address pressing questions about Jill Stein in our listener Q&A, produced by our Democracy Defender ($10/month) members. We'll also continue our discussion with Dr. Lee on how to navigate relationships with MAGA cultists, whether Trump staged his assassination attempt, and the troubling connections to pedophile rings within the corrupt family court system. Playing their role in this real-life horror show are white women—the majority have voted Republican since 2000, with more white women voters leaving Biden than leaving Trump. Why? The mental slavery of patriarchy gets internalized, just like mind-warped Russians openly embracing totalitarianism and being fed into the meat grinder in Ukraine. In this special Gaslit Nation, Terrell Starr reports from the country of Georgia, which operates like a Republican-hostage state thanks to the Kremlin's capture of just enough political and business elites. Sound familiar? Terrell shares the resistance strategies on the ground, how they might apply to the U.S., and why he thinks the people of Georgia will overthrow their own Kremlin-backed nightmare, called Georgia Dream, this weekend at the polls. Reecie Colbert, political analyst and host of The Reecie Colbert Show on Sirius XM, shares her insights into how to persuade white women in swing states not to vote for fascism. This important discussion, recorded over the summer and saved for prime get-out-the-vote season as we hit the final homestretch of Gaslit Nation's phone banks with Sister District and Indivisible (check the show notes to RSVP for those events!), will help you reach out to the white women swing voters in your life! Thank you to Democracy Defender-supporter Melissa for the question that produced this week's Q&A Bonus show! Be sure to subscribe at Patreon.com/Gaslit to submit your questions, get all shows ad free, and hear the full bonus episode! Why is DeJoy still in charge? Well, it all comes down to numbers—specifically, the ones the Democrats don't have yet. The USPS Board of Governors is still short of the votes needed to remove Louis DeJoy. There's a glimmer of hope on the horizon with Biden's nominations of former Florida Rep. Val Demings and former Labor Secretary Marty Walsh, but they need to get through Senate confirmation first. Even if that happens, the entire Democratic bloc on the board has to agree to boot DeJoy. And here's the kicker: they'll also need an Independent to back them. Now, about that Independent, Amber McReynolds: she was appointed by Biden. But, plot twist—this Biden appointee has gone on record saying the USPS is doing just fine. So yeah, not exactly a slam dunk for Team “Fire DeJoy.” This is how corruption is allowed to fester—DeJoy stays, he enriches his family through shady deals, and the USPS, along with its overworked staff, remains on the chopping block. It's the Reaganomics playbook: shrink government services, weaken unions, and let privatization sweep in to pick at the bones. All while the people who depend on these services are left with empty mailboxes and a dysfunctional system. Welcome to DeJoy's America! This week's bonus show includes a fiery continuation of Gaslit Nation's interview with Elie Mystal, Justice Correspondent for The Nation and author of the bestselling book Allow Me to Retort A Black Guy's Guide to the Constitution. How do we protect ourselves from Trump's MAGA Supreme Court? Expand the court like our lives depend on it, because they do! Elie Mystal, the Justice Correspondent for The Nation, and the author of the New York Times bestselling book Allow Me to Retort: A Black Guy's Guide to the Constitution, joins Gaslit Nation to discuss urgently needed judicial reform and how to do it.  One of the first things the Nazis did was take over the judiciary in Germany. Republicans have long waged lawfare against our democracy, and now they're just one election away from establishing a dictatorship. The far-right's long-game has been met with hand-wringing, complacency, and neoliberalism from Democrats. And now we're out of time, making court expanding an urgent priority for our nation, should Kamala Harris win.  But will the Supreme Court steal the election for Republicans, like they did for George W. Bush in 2000? That and Trump's cult of toxic masculinity are discussed in this week's Gaslit Nation, also featuring Terrell Starr of the Black Diplomats Podcast and Substack. MAGA is Russian State Capture

Gaslit Nation

Gaslit Nation is vindicated yet again. Today, The New York Times reports on Bob Woodward's latest book War, which confirms what we've been warning about since day one: Russia is infiltrating the U.S. through Trump's MAGA fascist cult. The same tactics of weaponized corruption that Paul Manafort, Trump's longtime friend and neighbor in Trump Tower, used to bring “Ukraine's Trump” Viktor Yanukovych to power are being deployed here. Ukraine has long been a testing ground for Russian aggression, and what happens there is a precursor for what Russia will try in other nations, including the U.S. This is why Ukraine's success is our own. We recorded this week's episode Tuesday morning before the publication of the report on War, which claims Trump has spoken to Putin at least seven to a dozen times since leaving office. It also reveals, unsurprisingly to Gaslit Nation listeners, that while Trump was waging war on so-called blue states—withholding life-saving supplies during the height of the pandemic—he sent Covid tests to Putin amidst a shortage of tests, further proving his fealty to the world's most sanctioned terrorist. This week, Terrell Starr reports from Berlin, Germany, a country grappling with its own MAGA crisis with the rise of the far-right AfD (Alternative for Germany). We unpack why some nonwhite voters support Trump despite it being against their interests; MAGA disinformation weapon Candace Owens; and Stacey Abrams' warning that “demographics are not destiny.” We also explore how to survive the apocalypse–a time of climate crisis driven by gas station dictatorships, MAGA's Big Oil backers, and their fascist footsoldiers. In times of compounding crises and confusion, Gaslit Nation is here to help you stay grounded. This week's bonus show for subscribers at the Truth-teller level ($5/month) and higher will answer questions from our Democracy Defender subscribers ($10/month and above). Brian Kemp is a Klansman

Gaslit Nation

On Gaslit Nation, we often say that America's history is an authoritarian one for nonwhite people. That brutal legacy flows directly through the family of Georgia Governor Brian Kemp. His ancestors were among the first to bring enslaved Africans to Georgia and fought to prevent America's Founding Fathers from banning slavery in the Declaration of Independence. Fast forward to today: Brian Kemp continues that legacy by denying voting rights to the descendants of those his ancestors enslaved. And in Georgia, you can't even learn about this history because Kemp has worked to suppress it—that's how he holds onto power. As the must-watch documentary Vigilantes, Inc. by investigative journalist Greg Palast reveals, “suppressing history suppresses the vote.” Narrated by Rosario Dawson and produced by Martin Sheen, George DiCaprio, and Maria Florio, the film is available for free at SaveYourVote.org, a site launched by Leonardo DiCaprio. The name Vigilantes, Inc. traces back to 1946, when the Ku Klux Klan used it as a cover for their operations. Today, Kemp is leading the charge to use the Klan's playbook to steal Georgia for Donald Trump in 2024, and MAGA has a new A.I. weapon.  Palast is known for his investigative reports for The Guardian and bestsellers including The Best Democracy Money Can Buy. This week's bonus show, out Saturday for subscribers at the Truth-teller ($5/month) level and higher, will feature the audience Q&A with Palast at our live taping. The Democratic National Convention in Chicago next week will be euphoric as Kamala Harris accepts the party nomination. Like every convention, it's also going to be a lobbyist paradise, with giant corporations throwing lavish parties. United Airlines' Josh Earnest, former White House Press Secretary under President Obama, will host an after-party at the company's Chicago headquarters, featuring Elon Musk apologist Walter Isaacson, author of Musk's mythologizing biography.    United Airlines has reason to be at the DNC, and it's not to celebrate terrifying passengers with several malfunctions, including wheels falling off and mid-flight engine trouble. They are actively working against Democratic legislation in the Senate to break-up the credit card fee monopoly of Visa and Mastercard, legislation that would save consumers $15 billion. Major airlines like United want to stop it, because they make more profit from credit card mileage programs than from flying planes. United's C.E.O., Scott Kirby, recently gave himself a 90% raise, earning $18.6 million in 2023, just a few years after taxpayers bailed out his airline at the height of the pandemic. Will United Airlines succeed in influencing Democrats at their biggest party in years, at the expense of us all?   Reecie Colbert, political commentator and host of Urban View on Sirius XM, joins Gaslit Nation, along with Terrell Starr of the essential Black Diplomats Podcast and Substack, to discuss how to hold a Harris/Walz administration accountable to the hopeful and inclusive vision of America they're running on, as well as how to protect the first Black woman president from white rage and misogyny. We also look at Ukraine's historic surprise invasion of Russia and what it means in the global fight against fascism at home and abroad.    This week's bonus show, available to subscribers at the Truth-teller ($5/month) and higher, answers questions from listeners subscribed at the Democracy Defender ($10/month) and higher, with a special look at what to say to white women in Virginia and Georgia thinking of voting for Trump. America will soon have a president who laughs easily and a humorous vice president, leading what will be the most progressive and joyful administration in American history. Kamala Harris made a strong choice by selecting beloved football coach, former teacher, and Minnesota governor Tim Walz as her running mate. This move unites the Democrats' Big Tent coalition, which has historically won them the White House. Walz's heartfelt and straightforward approach won him a U.S. House seat in a rural Republican district and re-election as governor of Minnesota, where he used a slim Democratic majority to achieve bold progressive victories: strengthening LGBTQ+ protections to make Minnesota a refuge for trans people; committing to decarbonization by 2040; protecting reproductive healthcare; significantly reducing child poverty; implementing automatic voter registration; strengthening gun safety laws; signing into law free school meals and free public college; banning forever chemicals known as PFAS; calling for a ceasefire and hostage deal early; and much more.    Harris reportedly chose Walz to collaborate on advancing a progressive national agenda, and his humor is an added bonus. Walz won hearts across America by labeling MAGA as “weird,” because it is. His famous charm will destroy J.D. Vance, a fascist tool of dark lord Peter Thiel. Harris and Walz are roughly the same age, which means, if we hold on tight, we could have eight years of President Harris followed by eight years of President Walz, strengthening America's future as we build a sustainable economy for all, especially for the planet.   ***   You think modern women have it tough now? Not too long ago, in 2007, Christopher Hitchens wrote an essay for Vanity Fair titled, “Why Women Aren't Funny.” In it, he argued, “Whereas women, bless their tender hearts, would prefer that life be fair, and even sweet, rather than the sordid mess it actually is. Jokes about calamitous visits to the doctor or the shrink or the bathroom, or the venting of sexual frustration on furry domestic animals, are a male province.” In his view, women are precious baby-making machines, and that power forces them into being a solemn presence–a reserved audience for men, who have evolved with the purpose of making society laugh.     Today, a woman vice president of the United States is the second most powerful person in the world. And the most that her enemies can come up with is that she laughs too much and has never given birth. The slim pickings of criticism of Kamala Harris by MAGA are as thin as Hitchens' arguments, and they all boil down to misogyny that will be relegated to history books.    That era was defined by the reign of “the rape joke king” Tucker Max, bestselling author of the book I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell, in case you've blocked him out of your memory. Coming of age during that time, a group of childhood girlfriends decided to create their own satire of this misogynistic hellscape, Betches Media. Joining us this week on Gaslit Nation to make sense of the war on women, past and present, and what to do about it is Sami Sage, co-founder of Betches Media and co-author, along with Emily Amick of the popular civic-action Instagram account Emily in Your Phone, Democracy in Retrograde: How to Make Changes Big and Small in Our Country and Our Lives.    This conversation was recorded during one of the darkest weeks in American democracy: the Republican National Convention. As they say, it's aways darkest before the dawn. Much has changed since then, but this conversation with Sami Sage remains as current as ever as we celebrate the opening words of the Gaslit Nation Action Guide: Democracy is a lifestyle. That's the only way we ensure the first Black woman president, and secure our democracy in the critical years to come.    Book Launch Reception for In the Shadow of Stalin: The Story of Mr. Jones – Sept 16 Monday September 16th 7pm at the Ukrainian Institute of America join us for a wine reception and live taping of Gaslit Nation with Terrell Starr for the launch of the graphic novel adaptation of Andrea's film Mr. Jones! How to Stop Trump from Stealing the Election

Days before the 2016 election, Rudy Giuliani went on Fox News promising a "big surprise," emphasizing his point with a Crypt Keeper cackle. "We've got a couple of things up our sleeves that should turn this around." The vast majority of the polls had Hillary Clinton comfortably winning. Paul Manafort, the Kremlin's longtime operative in Ukraine and Trump's longtime friend and neighbor, had laid low in recent weeks following a bombshell report out of Ukraine that he took millions of dollars in off-the-books payments from Ukrainian kleptocrat and wannabe strongman Viktor Yanukovych. However, Manafort broke his silence days before the election and wrote on Twitter: "Battleground states moving to Trump en masse. Media not liking the pattern. By Sunday, Trump will be over 270 in polls." But the polls said no such thing. Why were Giuliani and Manafort suddenly so confident Trump would pull off an upset? The 400-page Mueller Report and the bipartisan Senate Intelligence report both exposed how the Trump campaign and the Kremlin came to power in 2016: through pumping out disinformation to suppress the vote, cyberattacks stealing sensitive data, and hacking the voting systems of all 50 states. That very illegal strategy has been in play ever since and is mainstream for the MAGA fascist movement openly trying to overthrow our democracy and install a Christian nationalist dictatorship, with Trump as their long-awaited strongman, a perfect God's imperfect vessel. This special episode of Gaslit Nation looks at the ways Trump is trying to steal the election and what must be done to stop him. This is an episode you're going to want to share with your family and friends. The KKK, the Know Nothings, Nazis, MAGA—whatever you want to call them—will always be among us, as hate and ignorance are human nature. This week's episode is coming out on Juneteenth, a federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. But before we can get to our discussion about it (including how JD Vance recently introduced a “Dismantle DEI” bill to roll back Biden's diversity programs), it seems there's always more reproductive healthcare news to talk about. Last week, Senate Republicans blocked a bill to protect the right to IVF, and the Southern Baptist Church just voted to oppose IVF as well. And that's not even the only repro news to talk about, because the Supreme Court just rejected a challenge to mifepristone, the abortion pill, saying there was no standing to sue. This is good news... but (there's always a “but”!) this decision allows them to delay a merits decision on this issue until after the election. The fight is far from over. Then Jasmine sits down with Dr. Kaye Wise Whitehead, a professor, author, and leader who is also known as the #BlackMommyActivist. Dr. Kaye is an incredible storyteller and walks us through the origins of Juneteenth, how being a mom has inspired her activism, and how it's not just famous leaders but also everyday people who have done the hard work to make real change. We encourage everyone to learn more about her work with the African American Policy Forum and Critical Race Theory Summer School, as well as read her book Letters to My Black Sons: Raising Boys in a Post-Racial America. Finally, Amanda and Jasmine raise a glass to fathers and family reunions in this week's Toast to Joy.It's hard to believe, but this Monday will mark 2 years since the Dobbs decision overturned Roe v Wade. Radical Self-Reliance: Demand Accountability [TEASER]

Gaslit Nation

Gaslit Nation launched in 2018 to help build the Blue Wave, which set up progressive infrastructure that expands today, including in states like Kansas. In Virginia in 2023, our community produced one of the largest phone banks for Sister District, helping to get out the vote, flipping the Senate, and helping elect Danica Roem, the first transgender person to serve in the state Senate. We also protected abortion rights from Posh Trump Glenn Youngkin. An early September 2023 Gaslit Nation episode highlighted the work of the States Project, which raised more money for Virginia than the Democratic Party. Why? Because grassroots power is the most reliable power we have left. We are the answer to the decades-long mission of the corporate-backed far-right to dismantle our democracy. No one is coming to save us but us. That's why our listeners are the least likely to be demoralized by the news that the Supreme Court will drag out Trump's January 6 insurrection case, the one Merrick Garland's DOJ already waited out the clock on, losing valuable time as the coup plotters like Trump and Bannon continue to mobilize their genocidal far-right army. Ivanka and Jared dine with politicians from both parties and continue to serve as anonymous sources for the media that, in return, tries to rehabilitate their (banana republic grifter) reputations. This week's bonus show, answering questions from our listeners, features a special focus on the murder of Nex Benedict, a gender-fluid trans teen killed by the incitement of hate and violence driven by Chaya Raichik of Libs of TikTok and Oklahoma state school superintendent Ryan Walters, who appointed Raichik to terrorize vulnerable children and their allies. While the grief and anger over the lack of accountability are immense, there are solutions to what we can do, no matter if we live in a Republican-hostage state or a so-called blue state. Other questions from our listeners range from the latest news on the Havana Syndrome mystery and cover-up, must-see places to visit in New York, and whether George Santos will end up on Dancing with the Stars (he will!), and more. If you didn't hear your question answered this week, look out for it next week, as our Q&A continues. Thank you to everyone who supports the show – we could not make Gaslit Nation without you! This Election 2023 Super Special opens with a discussion on building unions, because the big takeaway is grassroots power is the most reliable power we have left. In a time of historic income inequality, which furthers the flames of fascism, we need to extend the Big Blue Wave energy into the growing rebirth of unions. Political and economic justice go hand-in-hand. For our Patreon community, there's a deep dive on the election, and a special call to action for those who support the show and make Gaslit Nation possible. Thank you all so much! If you would like to hear the full episode, get all episodes ad free, join our community of listeners, and so much more, subscribe to support our independent journalism at Patreon.com/Gaslit.   With all the important races this year, we strategically set our sights on one goal: denying Youngkin a Republican majority in Virginia. Together we exceeded our expectations: we held the Senate, flipped the House, and helped elect the first trans woman to the Virginia state senate, and put Youngkin's political future in doubt. There were headlines like this one from Politico following his major election night losses: “Glenn Youngkin's white knight era is over.”  We supported grassroots infrastructure that could lead to Virginia being called early again on election night like it was in 2020. Sister District, the grassroots group we partnered with, made 43-percent of its candidates phone calls, and our Gaslit Nation phone bank with them was their largest to date of this election. Thank you to everyone who did whatever you could wherever you are. We're going to get through this dangerous crossroads together. What's clear is that the grassroots communities that formed in the original 2018 Blue Wave are still active. Now we need to help expand that energy into economic justice. That's why this Election 2023 Special opens with an interview featuring longtime Gaslit Nation listener Brock Madden speaking with Jasmine Leli, the Buffalo, N.Y.-based Starbucks barista and member of Starbucks Workers United. Based in Seattle, Brock is looking to organize other restaurant workers like him to unionize. If you want to start a union and don't know how or where to start, this discussion will inspire you to take action, no matter how small at first.  Thank you to Jasmine and Brock for this important conversation. And an important voice will join the show to explain how to build a union, especially when you're up against corporate gaslighting and intimidation tactics. Today's bonus episode is shaped by questions and comments from listeners subscribed at the Democracy Defender level and higher, including how opportunistic China benefits from the Israel-Hamas War and the nefarious Chinese connections to American protest group Code Pink, revealing a vast pro-China network on the global Left. China, Code Pink, and the sex trafficking network of Hefner-Epstein-Trump, and more are discussed in this week's bonus show.  If you didn't hear your question answered this week, look out for it next week, as the Gaslit Nation Q&A continues.   Dictators are dangerous for many reasons, especially because, as the social ills grow, they need a war to cling to power. Putin needed a war to maintain the status quo, and so did Netanyahu. In China, it's increasingly dangerous for social media users to expose poverty or other crises, like youth unemployment or how difficult it can be for many to put food on the table. With US foreign policy stretched thin by the war in Ukraine and Israel-Hamas, now would be an opportune time for China, which has been aggressively building up its nuclear program and A.I. arsenal, to annex Taiwan, something Xi has been outspoken about since consolidating power in 2017. Technologically dominant groups get away with carrying out genocides. So a technologically dominant China would be a danger to the world.  Chatham House, the independent British think tank where in 1933 Gareth Jones shared his eye-witness account of the Holodomor, Stalin's genocide-famine in Ukraine, invited Andrea to join a Twitter Live discussion this coming Wednesday November 8 at 10:30am EST. Thank you to Patreon supporter Jennifer whose question inspired this discussion. Jennifer asked: "Can you talk about Cop City in the context of our global authoritarian shift. Have you seen this in other countries and do you expect it to grow?"   The opening discussion is the Fox News Tea livestream from Thursday afternoon, in case you missed it. While this episode is available to all, our Patreon community receives both the audio and video ad free, and supports our independent journalism. Thank you so much! And we're working on a fun festive surprise for both you and Merrick Garland to be announced soon. :)   We're working on organizing a social media workshop for our community here on Patreon featuring various experts in community organizing as well as the arts and media who have found new life on other platforms post-Elon Musk's deliberate destruction of Twitter. If there's anyone you're following on a platform that is not Twitter who has been helpful to you, providing insights, inspiration, community, drop their social media account in the comments and we'll consider reaching out to them to see if they might be willing to chat with our community here to provide guidance. Twitter was a real community power center, which is why the far-right elites had to destroy it, and starting over elsewhere can feel daunting and demoralizing. It's going to be a process, which will include still using Twitter for now, and expanding our presence elsewhere, including through fun events and collaborations.   Thank you to everyone who supports the show -- we could not make Gaslit Nation without you! It's a government shutdown by another name! Accused sex trafficker, proud January 6 insurrectionist, and Kremlin shill Matt Gaetz makes Russian state TV gleeful by leading the Kremlin Kaos Kaucus (KKK) by blocking much-needed aid to Ukraine and overthrowing Kevin McCarthy as speaker for trying to do a Ukraine deal with the Democrats. You may remember McCarthy as that guy who admitted Putin pays Trump, yet went on to support him and his MAGA death cult, earning his place in history as the first speaker to be ousted. Gaetz's Kremlin disinformation antics are part of a larger operation serving the Republican Party's dark money backers that include dirty Russian-linked financing that helped elect George Santos, the Koch political network that wants to drop sanctions against Russia to protect their profits, and the PayPal mafia like Elon Musk and Peter Thiel that deliberately destroyed Twitter, an organizing space for activists and journalists, in a unified bid to weaken American democracy and usher in dictatorship. Yes, this is all happening, and none of it is normal.  The KKK in Congress makes America look like an unreliable ally and demoralizes Ukrainians fighting and giving their lives to stop Russian imperial fascism. When they scream on the House floor about the national debt, what they really mean is protecting their corporate backers' record profits, historically and criminally low taxes, and wealth hoarding at the expense of the public good. This is Reagan's Revolution ideologically aligned with Putin's court of oligarchs: Greed is good and the firehose of corruption and scandal ensures they live above the law. As history shows, our courts are the anecdote when Congress is gridlocked. Unfortunately, Biden's judicial appointments were stalled this year as Senator Dianne Feinstein and her enablers refused to let her retire with dignity, tarnishing her legacy by slowing down Biden's appointments for months. If people weren't getting rich off of Washington being broken, it would have been fixed by now. The great Heather Cox Richardson, historian and author of the latest must-read book Democracy Awakening: Notes on the State of America, stops by Gaslit Nation to give us insight on how we got here and what to do about this dangerous crossroads in our nation's history. Needless to say Andrea and Heather geek out over Ulysses S. This week, hosts Jasmine Clark, Rachel Vindman, and Amanda Weinstein talk about how far the bar has lowered for conduct amongst extremists, whether it's Georgia Governor Kemp cowardly and dangerously supporting Trump, a man going after someone's child in a school board meeting, or Ohio's Frank LaRose changing the rules of democracy to take away women's reproductive rights. The hosts express concern and sadness at the message that extremists are sending to children: if you're different in any way, you aren't worthy of love. As moms, they know that love for a child should be unconditional. After that, Jasmine sits down with Gaby Goldstein, co-founder of Sister District. Sister District has supported Jasmine's campaign so there were a lot of warm fuzzies as she and Gaby chatted about the importance of diverse candidates, the work that Sister District does, and how red legislatures can prevent blue cities from doing great progressive work. Finally, Amanda, Rachel and Jasmine raise a glass to kids growing up, Yom Kippur, and Amy Poehler and Tina Fey in this episode's “Toast to Joy.”There are a lot of important elections this November and just a handful of votes could make the difference. In this special interview with Gaby Goldstein, a co-founder of Sister District, we discuss the Supreme Court case Moore v. Harper, which the court agreed to hear December 7th. Just like Citizens United empowered dark money groups to turbo-charge America's descent into far-right fascism, Moore vs. Harper will unleash a far great danger: the end of our democracy as we know it -- state governments will essentially be allowed to override the will of voters.   The story of how we got here is one of state government power, and why, as we keep saying on the show, it's so important to fight like hell in state elections, and not just the races for Congress and president. You can join us in doing just that by making calls with Sister District and Gaslit Nation on Tuesday October 25th at 5pm EST -- we're calling voters in North Carolina to remind them to vote in their all important state elections. Every vote matters, and so does every phonecall we make together.   This interview ends with a quick training on making phone calls to voters and an important call to action to join our North Carolina phonebank with Sister District. You can sign up for this and other events on the Gaslit Nation 2022 Survival Guide. We look forward to seeing you Tuesday 5pm EST at our phonebank party with Sister District!

Trump will be on the ballot in 5 weeks

My friends,Make no mistake: Donald Trump is effectively on the ballot in the midterm elections, five weeks from tomorrow (voting has already begun in several states). Even if he decides not to run, he's laying the groundwork for authoritarianism. In the upcoming midterms, 60 percent of us will have an election denier on our ballot, most of them endorsed by Trump. In the key battleground states of Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Minnesota, and Pennsylvania, Republican candidates who embrace Trump's Big Lie have won almost two-thirds of Republican nominations for offices with authority over elections. Many are running for secretaries of state — the chief elections officers in 37 states, who will be overseeing voter registration and how elections are conducted. In the 2020 presidential election, people who held these positions were the last line of defense for our fragile democracy, upholding Joe Biden's win despite heavy pressure from proponents of Trump's Big Lie. Which is why Trump and Trump's lieutenants, including Steve Bannon and Michael Flynn, are trying to fill these positions with Big Liars.Michigan's GOP candidate for Secretary of State is Kristina Karamo — who rose to prominence in conservative circles after falsely claiming to have witnessed election fraud as a pollster. Karamo has claimed that Trump won the 2020 election and that Antifa was behind the January 6 insurrection. Arizona's Republican candidate for Secretary of State is Mark Finchem, a QAnon-supporting member of the Oath Keepers militia, who participated in the January 6 insurrection. He cruised to victory in the GOP primary by claiming that Trump won the 2020 election. Nevada's GOP's candidate for Secretary of State is Jim Marchant, who won his Republican primary by making Trump's baseless claims of election fraud a cornerstone of his campaign. He also falsely claims that mail-in voting is rife with fraud, and wants to eliminate it altogether (despite the fact that he has voted by mail many times over the years). In Wyoming, state representative Chuck Gray, who won last month's GOP primary for secretary of state, faces no opponent. Gray has repeated Trump's lies about 2020 being “rigged,” traveled to Arizona to watch a partisan review of ballots that was derided as deeply flawed and proposed additional regular election audits in Wyoming. In Alabama, state Rep. Wes Allen, the nominee for secretary of state, says he would have signed onto a 2020 Texas lawsuit to overturn Biden's win (that case was swiftly thrown out by the U.S. Supreme Court).Trump-backed candidates for governor are also on the ballot in key states where governors play a critical role in certifying votes and upholding the will of the people.Pennsylvania's Republican gubernatorial nominee is Doug Mastriano. If he wins, Mastriano would appoint Pennsylvania's top election official. Mastriano was also at the Capitol on January 6, and has even been subpoenaed by the January 6 committee to testify about his involvement. Mastriano also helped lead the push to overturn the state's 2020 election results. Arizona's GOP gubernatorial nominee is Kari Lake — who has said she does not recognize Joe Biden as the nation's legitimate president, and would not have certified Arizona's 2020 election results had she been governor. Wisconsin's Republican gubernatorial nominee is Tim Michels. Michels still questions the results of the 2020 election and refuses to say whether he will certify the state's 2024 president election results. Right now, elections in Wisconsin are overseen by the bipartisan Wisconsin Election Commission, but if Michels wins he supports scrapping the Commission in favor of a plan that could shift oversight of the state's elections to the state's Republican-dominated legislature. I don't know about you, but all these Big Liars terrify me. If any one of them wins in a state that's likely to be a battleground in 2024, they could tip the balance in a tight presidential election to Trump. What terrifies me even more is they could tip America away from democracy to authoritarianism. Meanwhile, a third of all state attorney general races currently have an election denying Republican candidate on the ballot — including Alabama's Steve Marshall, Idaho's Paul Labrador, Texas's Ken Paxton, South Carolina's Alan Wilson, and Maryland's Michael Peroutka. Attorneys general also have key roles in election administration — defending state voting laws and election results in court, taking legal action to prevent or address voter intimidation or election misconduct, and investigating and prosecuting illegal attempts to suppress the vote.I haven't even talked about all the local and county election officials who are also Big Liars, and also on ballots in many states — and who could play roles in the 2024 election. How can we fight back? First: Spread the word about the Trump-GOP's plans to capture the election process and undermine American democracy. Inform your friends and family — including young voters who often don't turn out in large numbers — about what's at stake in the midterms. Second: Make sure you and they vote down the entire ballot. Too many Democrats vote for federal offices but disregard state races. A recent analysis of the last three presidential elections in ten swing states showed that Democrats voted down the ballot far less than Republicans. (Democratic presidential nominees at the top of the ticket received more votes 87 percent of the time than Democratic state legislative candidates, while Republican presidential nominees received more votes just 45 percent of the time than Republican state legislative candidates.)Control of many state legislatures is often determined by a handful of races that can swing in either direction based on a relatively small number of votes. In the 2020 election, very small margins in a number of battleground races prevented Democrats from gaining control of state legislatures. Had Democratic candidates received just 4,451 more votes in the two closest races in the Arizona state House, they would have flipped the chamber. In North Carolina, had Democrats received 20,671 more votes (just 0.39 percent of the votes cast) in the ten most competitive legislative districts, they would have flipped the state House — thereby preventing Republicans from gerrymandering the state and federal maps, which Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper has no ability to veto. In Michigan, just 8,611 more votes for state Democratic candidates in the four districts with the closest margins would have flipped this crucial swing state, too. Third: Familiarize yourself with state and local candidates, and share this information. You may want to get your ballot early so you have ample time. Some great organizations to help you are Sister District, The States Project, Bolts Magazine, and People's Action. (I'm linking to them here, but feel free to leave a comment with other local resources you've found helpful.) ***As I said, Trump is effectively on the ballot in the midterms. Which means — regardless of whether he decides to run again for president — our democracy is on the ballot. The midterm elections in five weeks will lay the foundation for all future races. My friends, I cannot say this with more concern: Trump's anti-democracy movement has been making astounding progress. We must stop it. We've brought Michigan State Senator Mallory McMorrow (of this famed viral floor speech) and her colleague MI State Representative and State Senate candidate Darrin Camilleri to the Bay Area. The DLCC has identified Michigan as one of the three states where we actually have a chance at flipping the State Senate, in this instance, because of the state's independent redistricting process. Our friends at The States Project and Sister District have joined us in endorsing Darrin Camilleri for one of the country's most critical state legislature seats. These are also two leaders who The Next 50 is firmly behind for their rising leadership in Michigan and in our country. About Senator Mallory McMorrow: Sen. Mallory McMorrow is serving her first term in the Michigan Senate. McMorrow gained more than a decade of experience in product design, media and advertising through her work with Mazda, Mattel, Gawker Media, Hearst and other global brands. She brings a fresh, creative and collaborative approach to addressing and solving some of our state's most complex issues. As a state senator, McMorrow is focused on increasing our state's competitiveness by supporting what makes Michigan unique – our people, unparalleled history of manufacturing and innovation, and our Great Lakes. She will work to diversify our economy by creating more opportunities for small businesses, provide our kids with a world-class education, fight for access to health care and clean water for all Michiganders, and ensure we fix our roads. She earned her bachelor's degree in industrial design from the University of Notre Dame. About Darrin Camalleri: State Rep. Darrin Quiroz Camilleri is serving his third term representing the 23rd District, which includes the Downriver communities of Gibraltar, Grosse Ile, Huron, Trenton, Woodhaven, and Brownstown. He currently serves as Minority Whip for the House Democrats and the Minority Vice Chair on the House Education Committee. In his first few years, he has quickly emerged as a statewide voice on education and a champion for workers' rights. Over the past three years, Camilleri has consistently introduced legislation to keep Michigan's promises to working people and help everyday Michiganders get ahead. Notably, he has been a leader in the fight to protect pensions for police officers, firefighters, teachers and school employees. He has also worked extensively to protect our environment and highlight the state's literacy crisis and teacher shortage. Camilleri was awarded Progress Michigan's Legislator of the Year in 2017, was recognized as one of Crain's Detroit's 20 in their 20s, and given the Michigan Association for Media in Education's 2018's Outstanding Legislator Award for his work on expanding access to school libraries.

This week's dreadful news that the Supreme Court is poised to strike down Roe v. Wade underscores more than ever why progressives must build power at the state level. The Downballot hosts Gaby Goldstein, the co-founder of Sister District, to discuss what Democrats in the states are doing to protect abortion rights; how her organization helps connect volunteers with worthy legislative candidates across the country; and the advice she's giving campaigns on how to succeed in a difficult political environment. Co-hosts David Nir and David Beard also recap Tuesday's primaries in Ohio, including Trump-endorsed J.D. Vance's come-from-behind victory in the GOP Senate race, Nina Turner's fizzled rematch with Rep. Shontel Brown, and a shock win by an openly QAnon rando in a House district Republicans are hoping to flip. We also cast a gimlet eye at last-minute ballot shenanigans in New York State designed to benefit Gov. Kathy Hochul. Episode transcript to come.

We also discuss the status of the Republican long-game to undermine democracy, specifically as it relates to redrawing congressional maps. Recently, Republicans attempted to apply a fringe constitutional theory called Independent State Legislature doctrine to further weaken voting rights in a few key states; Lala Wu explains why this strategy failed in the short-term, but may be a concern in the long run. Jarvis Houston, the Organizing and Political Director of Sister District. Jarvis Houston has ten years of advocacy and campaign experience at the local, state, and national levels. He is a lifelong organizer and a proud graduate of Howard University. With armchair analysts portending a dark upcoming decade for Democrats, Jarvis speaks to a positive outcome of the past elections: the shift in political representation across a country and how the political climate is changing for people of color. Election night saw historic wins down ballot for candidates of color: Michelle Wu in Boston, Aftab Pureval in Cincinnati, Eric Adams in New York, and more! These victories are key to progress, but as America continues to shift demographically and Democrats stare down the barrel of the midterms it's clear: demographics do not dictate electoral wins. Jarvis discusses how recent victories are a major step forward for inclusive representation, and explain what it's going to take for Democrats to mobilize voters—demographics aside—ahead of midterms.Nancy: Website, Instagram, Twitter Welcome to Progressive Opinions of Color (POC), a podcast that creates space for people of color in conversations about economics, politics, and culture. The Power of State Legislatures State legislatures pass the laws that affect our daily lives. When Democrats won the ‘trifecta' in Virginia in 2019, they controlled both chambers of the House and the governor's office. Immediately, they passed voting rights legislation, abolished the death penalty, improved the criminal justice system, abolished no-knock warrants, and more. Purple District Network Sister District identified a gap in resources for legislators from purple districts. The Purple District Network focuses on providing support by sharing best practices, governance techniques, and strategies for being effective. They also give lawmakers access to alumni of their program, allowing for mentorship, networking, and strategizing across state lines. Redistricting Flipping and holding districts is key to progressive strategies in 2021-22, especially because of the redistricting process after the 2020 census. Democrats were unable to take any state legislatures back from Republican control last year. However, several states do have bipartisan redistricting commissions, which will make redistricting fairer for Democrats; and there are several competitive upcoming state races. FIND OUT MORE: Lala Wu is a Co-Founder and the Executive Director of Sister District. Since its founding in 2016, Sister District has raised millions in small dollar donations directly for candidates and reached out to voters through doors, calls, texts, and postcards on behalf of over 100 state legislative candidates in key swing districts. Lala has successfully led the expansion of the organization's volunteer infrastructure to over 50,000 and has also led the development of strategic partnerships with local and national organizations such as the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee, EMILY's List, Human Rights Campaign, Vote Save America, and more. Prior to Sister District, Lala clerked for federal judges in the Northern District of California and the District of Massachusetts. She was also an attorney at Morrison & Foerster LLP in San Francisco and Kaplan Kirsch & Rockwell LLP in Denver where she counseled renewable energy and real estate clients on land use, regulatory, transactional, and litigation matters. Rita Bosworth stops by to talk about the Sister District Project. Sister District is dedicated to changing the composition of state legislatures and making them more representative of their constituents. More specifically, Sister District seeks to turn states blue by helping Democrats win state legislative elections. Their approach is to pair up - or “sister” - volunteers from deep blue districts with carefully targeted races in swing districts. Ultimately, they seek to advance progressive policy and eliminate partisan gerrymandering. Their volunteers canvass, phonebank, write postcards, text-bank, and fundraise for candidates. Since launching in the wake of the 2016 elections, the Sister District Project has grown to over 45,000 volunteers across the country. They have raised over $3 million in small-dollar donations directly to candidates. Rita Bosworth is the Founder and Executive Director of the Sister District Project. She started Sister District a week after the 2016 presidential election. Prior to Sister District, she was a Federal Public Defender for 12 years. She received her undergraduate degree from U.C. Davis, and she received her law degree from Stanford. After law school Rita clerked for the Honorable Henry Kennedy in Washington, D.C.

The COVID-19 catastrophe has highlighted major problems in America that existed well before the pandemic did, from a broken health care system to vast (and rising) inequality. But what if out of this crisis came the chance to create big change? Today our focus is on expanding our political imaginations and beginning to think about what a post-pandemic America should look like.First, a quick follow-up, as Antoinette gives us an important update on vote by mail in Texas. Next, we jump into our main topic. To start, we explore a couple of recent happenings that highlight the possibility of tossing aside the old, ineffective ways of doing things and searching for a better path forward. Helping guide the conversation: Jamelle Bouie's recent column in support of Elizabeth Warren for Dem V.P.; Mark Leibovich's story on Stacey Abrams; and the recent commencement address given by President Obama. Then we dive into how previous crises have opened the door to major policy shifts and structural change in America. For more historical context, check out this Los Angeles Times piece by Mark Z. Barabak, and this Mara Liasson story from NPR.What are the big changes your hosts would like to see? We delve into some of the big ones, including fixing our broken healthcare system, confronting white supremacy, and fighting back against the war on people who actually know what they're talking about. (For an entertaining and depressing piece on how far we've fallen in that last category, check out this excerpt from Michael Lewis' book, "The Fifth Risk."). How do we get to a place where we can make real change? For starters, by getting real about how we got into this position in the first place. We take a look at an interesting 2018 proposition from Kevin Baker in the New Republic.Of course, no change can happen if we can't take power, and big change can't happen if we don't play the long game by winning at the state and local, as well as federal, levels.Your calls to action for today:1. Get involved locally. Find a state or local election in a swing district near you and volunteer today. Have no idea where to start? If you're in Texas, check out Flip The Texas House, Swing Left and Indivisible Austin. In Texas or out of it, visit Run For Something and Sister District.2. Create a political dream board. Lenore Goldman – How to Get Off the Battlefield – And WIN the Battleground StatesAired Tuesday, January 14, 2020 at 2:00 PM PST / 5:00 PM ESTInterview with Activist and Campaign Consultant Lenore Goldman“It’s time to get off the old battlefield and on to a new playing field.” — Swami BeyondanandaIn the wake of the 2016 elections, millions of Americans were awakened to what they perceived as a battle for the heart and soul of America. Many became politically active for the first time, joining in the various “resist” movements, and becoming involved in supporting “battleground state” campaigns in the 2018 Midterm elections. This being a Presidential election year, everyone is focused on the national election and the national issues – but maybe there is a more fertile field to cultivate. Our guest this week, veteran activist and consultant Lenore Goldman, shows us where the REAL change takes place – the grassroots, particularly statehouse elections. At a time when the power of money overwhelmingly controls the airwaves, the new playing field is “on the ground”, the door-to-door campaigns where real people talk with real people, and where people who have been disenfranchised by and are cynical about the system can be motivated to vote.Consider how much energy is wasted on social media, throwing slings and barbs at folks on the other side who will never be convinced. What if that energy was used in a focused way to bring new voters to the polls and swing the swing states from the grassroots up? What if instead of arguing with folks who don’t agree with us, we spent that time encouraging voters who do?Lenore Goldman will tell us why and how to get off that old battlefield, and mobilize the power of people to prevail over the power of money.Lenore Goldman has consulted on strategy, capacity, sustainability and social impact with diverse organizations, coalitions, campaigns and initiatives for over 20 years. She was Operations Director for the 2018 Michigan ballot initiative that ended gerrymandering. She has worked on battleground state election and voter mobilization strategies with such groups as Indivisible, Sister District, Swing Left, East Bay Activist Alliance and Fems for Dems. From the grassroots to the boardroom, Lenore’s experience across race, class, gender and culture enables her to build leadership at all levels and identify opportunities for greater impact. If you’re ready to make a REAL difference in creating “political climate change” that will bring about “heartland security”, please tune in this Tuesday, January 14th at 2 pm PT / 5 pm ET. http://omtimes.com/iom/shows/wiki-politiki-radio-show/To find out more about Lenore’s work, please go here: https://www.lenoregoldman.com/And now that we ARE back with new shows (and planning a Zoom video element after the first of the year), we invite you to help support Wiki Politiki and our mission to bring about “the great upwising” and functional politics! Before we begin, please note that this episode was recorded before the SCOTUS confirmation hearings. The card of this year is Justice (Major Arcana 11). Yeah. Topical, right? In any case, join us as we discuss how to calculate your Soul Card, your Year Card and THE Card of the Year - what "card of the year" means, controversies, karma, what justice is? Do we get justice through punishment and revenge, or through restoration of balance. We’d love to hear your thoughts via our Social Media pages. Technical Stuff: To calculate THE card of the year, add up the numbers of the year: 2 + 0 + 1 + 8 = 11 = Justice, and some people then reduce 11 down to 1 + 1 = 2 = the High Priestess. To calculate YOUR card of the year, one way of doing it is to add your birth month (for example, April = 4) plus your birth day (let’s say, April 11th = 11) and then add it to the number of THIS year. So: 4 + 11 + 2 + 0 + 1 + 8 = 26 . Then you reduce the number to correspond to the Major Arcana, so 2 + 6 = 8 A great resource to find out more about calculating the card of the year and tarot numerology is Mary K. Greer’s Tarot Constellations: Patterns of Personal Destiny published in 1987 by Newcastle Publishing Co. Vocab: Major Arcana - The 22 archetypal cards (numbers 0 through XXI) that make a tarot deck a tarot deck rather than just a deck of playing cards. Numerology - a system of divination where numbers correspond to mystical meanings. Archetypes - an overarching pattern of behavior or a “way things happen”, specifically refers to religion, mythology, symbols, literature and art. See also Carl Jung. Keys - the keys of the tarot are the tarot cards themselves but most often refer to the Major Arcana. They’re called keys because they open up portholes to new ways of thinking. Correspondences - within the occult, objects, symbols, astrological signs, elements, metals, crystals and many other objects and signs relate to each other through a system known as correspondences. For instance, Major Arcana 3, the Empress, corresponds to the planet Venus. BOGO - Buy One Get One. Get Involved If you’re interested in getting more involved politically, here are some ideas for places you can start. Remember, witches aren’t just about love, light and meditation; we get active in the world and work on behalf of justice for all beings. So, you have an issue. You are upset about something. You see an injustice and you see nothing being done about it. The leadership in your country or state are failing to address an issue that affects the wellbeing of the people. You feel helpless. What can you do, especially if it’s just you? “The answer,” says Andrea MacRae, local grassroots organizer and activist, “is that it’s never just you.” There are others out there who are feeling the same way you do and the first step toward doing something about it is to find them. Once you have found each other, you can start organizing from the bottom up. What it looks like from there will be the subject of this timely and urgent Soapbox talk. MacRae, who is responsible for organizing 1200 members of the up and coming state elections-focused organization, Sister District, will share hers and other stories on what it takes to participate in a grassroots effort. How did the Women’s March get organized? How are the Parkland students organizing? How can you personally put together something small that’s part of a larger movement? Bring your selves and your ideas to this talk to get clear on those formative first steps and get a sense of what much-needed effect your efforts could yield down the road.
