In this episode, we have two interviews with our U.S. Correspondent, Michael Arria. First, Michael talks to Ryan Grim, Washington D.C. Bureau chief for The Intercept. Ryan has a new book out titled, “The Squad: AOC and the Hope of a Political Revolution.” In it, he reports on the fight between the squad of progressive Democrats first elected to Congress in 2018 and Israel lobby organizations AIPAC and Democratic Majority for Israel. Later, we'll hear from a student organizer at Columbia University about the school's suspension of pro-Palestine groups on campus. In recent weeks, we've seen a disturbing wave of McCarthyism target Palestine activism across college campuses. A number of Students for Justice in Palestine chapters have been suspended or even banned at schools. One of the schools is Columbia University, which also suspended its Jewish Voice for Peace chapter. Michael spoke with a member of Columbia Students for Justice in Palestine about these developments. She is also a member of Columbia University Apartheid Divest, a coalition that has been relaunched in response to the suspensions. Fourteen Democratic senators called for a "short-term cessation of hostilities” on Thursday, as Israel's airstrikes continued for the fourth week and a ground invasion intensified. So far 18 House members have signed on to a resolution, introduced weeks earlier, with stronger calls for an "immediate de-escalation and ceasefire in Israel and occupied Palestine.” Pro-Israel lobbying groups have already begun efforts to oust House members pushing for a ceasefire. This week on Deconstructed, Democratic strategist Waleed Shahid joins Ryan Grim to discuss the powerful influence of groups like the American Israel Public Affairs Committee and Democratic Majority for Israel in shaping U.S.-Israel policy, the generational shift challenging their power, and how Arab and Muslim communities are responding to the Biden administration's response to the war.If you'd like to support our work, go to theintercept.com/give, where your donation, no matter what the amount, makes a real difference. And if you haven't already, please subscribe to the show so you can hear it every week. They explore how the Dobbs decision, Supreme Court radicalism, Trump and his party's attempts to overturn the election, the possibility of a government shutdown, and their inability to moderate is giving democratic candidates positive numbers not seen in decades. They focus on the power of the Dobbs decision to split the Republican party and win over voters, the key demographics in the Democratic coalition in the 2024 elections, and how focusing on them and the GOTV effort can continue to grow the expanding majority that began with Bill Clinton. On Tuesday, in a House Democratic primary contest to represent a predominantly Black middle-class district north and east of Washington, DC., Glenn Ivey, a former state's attorney for Prince George's County, defeated Donna Edwards, the first Black woman elected to the House from Maryland. (Edwards left the seat to run unsuccessfully for the Senate in 2016 and had hoped to return.) Progressive groups backed Edwards, but television and radio were saturated with ads questioning her willingness to perform basic services for her constituents and to make the kinds of compromises necessary for legislative success. The argument was horse manure. Where did the money for those ads come from? The American-Israel Political Affairs Committee (AIPAC) and its new super PAC, the United Democracy Project (along with another group, the Democratic Majority for Israel). Together they spent almost $7 million to defeat Edwards. That's a staggering sum for a single Democratic primary. What did Edwards do to deserve this degree of AIPAC enmity? Could it have been because she was an early supporter of a nuclear deal between Iran and five industrial countries, including the United States? Probably not, because that hardly distinguished her from most other Democrats. Besides, the Obama administration supported the deal. Was it because Edwards took a number of votes that expressed support for Palestinian rights and the resumption of a meaningful peace process? These were hardly outside of the mainstream. So what was it? Dig deeper. Remember, AIPAC never used to endorse candidates. Until this election cycle, it didn't even have a super PAC. But it's on the way to spending nearly $20 million in the 2022 Democratic primaries alone. That makes it the single most influential political group in Democratic electoral politics. And what's the criterion for whom AIPAC supports in Democratic primaries? If AIPAC were simply aiming to promote Israel or deter antisemitism, presumably it would be as active in Republican primaries as it is in Democratic ones. But it has barely spent a dime in Republican primaries — not even against Republican candidates who have been widely criticized for antisemitic comments. And its United Democracy Project super-PAC hasn't spent a penny. AIPAC hasn't supported a Republican primary challenger to Marjorie Taylor Greene (who claimed that Jewish space lasers were behind California's 2018 wildfires), for example. But AIPAC has endorsed Republican Scott Perry, who compared Democrats to Nazis. The real criterion for AIPAC's support or enmity in Democratic primaries seems to have more to do with which candidate is friendlier toward America's moneyed interests and the Republican agenda. When Edwards was last a member of Congress, she backed single-payer health care and was one of the early champions of sweeping campaign finance reforms. Both irked big money. In the pending race between Haley Stevens and Andy Levin in Michigan's 11th Congressional District, AIPAC is supporting Stevens (who has a history of fighting worker protections) against Levin (who is a labor champion). AIPAC is on the way to becoming a Republican front group. Much of AIPAC's trove is coming from Republican donors. In May, Republican billionaires Paul Singer and Bernie Marcus donated $1 million each to AIPAC's super PAC. Marcus famously gave $7 million to President Trump's campaign in 2016.So far in this election cycle, AIPAC has endorsed over 100 Republican candidates who refused to certify the 2020 election results. What to do about this?First, Democrats must stop allowing AIPAC to be a Democratic kingmaker. The Democratic leadership in Congress must openly criticize AIPAC's role in Democratic primaries. Democratic candidates should cease taking money from AIPAC in primaries and condemn candidates who do.Second, all of us need to get behind campaign finance reforms that prevent big money from whatever source from corrupting our elections. Such reforms are possible notwithstanding the Supreme Court's horrific Citizens United decision. The House has already passed legislation that would encourage small-dollar donations by matching them dollar-for-dollar with public financing. Like most other reforms, it's been stalled in the Senate. We must elect Democrats to the Senate who will pass this. Finally, if you're concerned about Israel's future or about antisemitism in America, I'd recommend you not give another penny to AIPAC and urge others to cease funding AIPAC, too. Instead, consider supporting “J Street,” the pro-Israel nonprofit group that advocates diplomacy-based solutions and supports progressive candidates, or If Not Now.What do you think? Electing Democratic legislators is the surest way to overturn the slim majorities in the AZ House and Senate of right-wing, extremist-elites who are cutting taxes for the rich, grossly underfunding public education and casting uncertainty in democracy itself.Democratic candidates Mariana Sandoval for the House and current House Rep. Brian Fernandez for the Senate in LD23 have been working on the education, economic and environmental issues that impact most Arizonans left out of the policy power structure in AZ. Well, no longer! With our collective help in electing candidates like Sandoval and Fernandez and others, we will simultaneously have a democratic majority in both chambers of the Arizona Legislature and restore the governance values that most Arizonans support.A big thank you goes to our sponsor the Maricopa County Democratic Party for their support. With Former House Speaker Mike Madigan finally charged, people are beginning to look into his remaining constituents and others that were close to him. Governor Pritzker donated $7M to Madigan's "Democratic Majority" campaign fund back in 2018 but has not been charged or incriminated in any way. Patch Writer Mark Konkol joins John to discuss.
DMFI PAC, the political arm of Democratic Majority for Israel, announced on Monday that it is backing 15 House candidates in the upcoming primary elections as part of its first round of congressional endorsements. A new survey has found that most Americans don't think President Joe Biden should commit to replacing Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer with an African American woman. Former President Donald Trump spent his weekend eliminating any remaining doubt that he wanted to steal the 2020 election. Susan Collins twisted herself in knots to avoid saying she won't support Trump in 2024. Sam hosts Adam Hilton, assistant professor of politics at Mount Holyoke College, to discuss his recent book True Blues: The Contentious Transformation of the Democratic Party, on how the party apparatus of the Democratic Party went from a three-majority monster in the midst of the 20th Century to a hollow shell of an organization. Professor Hilton begins by walking through where political parties came from, looking at them as creatures of political officials seeking to form a structure of internal coalition, while in contentious interaction with the social groups that make up their base, before they help contextualize where the Democratic Party was coming out of the New Deal. Adam and Sam walk through the coalition of Southern conservatives, big city Democratic machines, and Northern liberals that took hold of US politics for three decades after FDR's Presidency, exploring the Confederate-like arrangement that allowed states and localities autonomy over their agendas, and why this both bolstered the unity over those decades, while also ultimately undermining the Democratic association with growing movements for civil rights, with continued coalition with a segregationist south. Next, they dive into the four years from 1968-1972 that saw a complete deconstruction of the Democratic apparatus, starting with the '68 conventions election of Hubert Humphrey – against the public's engagement – and shifting towards a New Politics ideology of good government reformation amidst a rejection of racial populism. Professor Hilton then dives into how organizations like the Coalition for a Democratic Majority put themself at the center of the party in the wake of George McGovern and New Politic's overwhelming loss to Nixon in '72, effectively working to completely deconstruct the party reformation, leaving behind solely a shell of an organization, largely relying on outside groups for their electoral efforts. Hilton and Sam also explore the major differences between the Democratic and Republican parties at this time, before diving into how we can see the DNC or other organizations work to rebuild the party's structure. Sam also gives some updates on Omicron and Education. And in the Fun Half: Sam reunites with Matt and Brandon as they take on Nate Silver's descent into a whole new realm of fear-mongering, Hannity and Meadows reflect on the true meaning of January 6th, and the crew reflects on their Omicron run-ins. Ron DeSantis debates the politicization of coup d'etats, and Brandon and Matt reflect on the legacy of the 1/6 narratives. Lin Manuel Miranda inspires a conversation on the relationship between talent and corniness, and Nathan from Chicago chats about WWE's exploitative practices. They also chat about the Democrats' desire to respect existential threats, plus, your calls and IMs! When the U.S. House of Representatives voted last week 420-9-2 to replenish Israel's Iron Dome defense system, it ended debate about America's short-term support for the program and simultaneously sparked a conversation about the future of bipartisan support for the U.S.-Israel relationship. Mark Mellman, President and CEO of Democratic Majority for Israel, joins us to address that topic and more, including whether Democratic support for Israel is shifting and trends in attitudes towards Israel on both sides of the aisle. Julie Rayman, AJC's Senior Director of Policy and Political Affairs, guest hosts this week's episode. AJC is a nonpartisan, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. As such, AJC does not endorse or oppose political parties or candidates. ____ Episode Lineup: (0:40) Mark Mellman (20:58) Manya Brachear Pashman and Julie Rayman ____ Show notes: Integrity First for America's “Unite Against Nazis”: A Virtual Rally in Support of IFA's Groundbreaking Charlottesville Lawsuit - September 30, 7:30pm ET
As impeachment was closing in on President Nixon, the CIA could, it seemed breathe a sigh of relief, as it had skillfully and luckily, with the unstinting help of the Washington Post, navigated rocky shoals. The Mullen cover contract (Ep. 3), Michael Stevens' bombshell stories (Ep. 14), Lou Russell's involvement (Ep. 15), the desk key found during the Watergate breakin (Ep. 16), CIA handler, Lee Pennington's document burning (Ep. 17), the CIA Defense offered during the burglary trial (Ep. 27), blackmail claims (Ep. 28), and Bittenbender's reports had all been avoided in the public narrative. So nothing could derail our country's first presidential impeachment, correct? But what if an honest CIA Security Officer, wishing not to be obstructive, forced disclosure of previously concealed CIA documents to the Senate? The Democratic Majority would not wish to touch them, but what about the Republican Minority, led by Tennessee Senator Howard Baker, heretofore cowed into submission by the Washington Post? And with the televised hearings long concluded, how would the Republican Minority reach the public? Tune in to this chapter of Watergate, regarding the little-read Baker Report, that has been lost to history.________________________________________ Thank you for listening! It's about time. After months of haggling, the chamber is expected to pass the BIF today at 11 a.m., then move fairly quickly to consider Democrats' $3.5 trillion budget resolution. Majority Leader Chuck Schumer indicated late Monday night that he thought both sides would agree to forgo the 50 allowable hours of debate. That would allow the chamber to start their vote-a-rama today and get out of town ASAP. But, it's the Senate, y'all. And all it takes is one senator to slow things down. And, Jewish Insider's Matthew Kassel has picked up on a really juicy dynamic playing out in Democratic districts across the country: a war between Justice Democrats and Democratic Majority for Israel. Per Kassel, the faceoff between the two groups is “unusually personal” and “has animated several high-profile contests in recent cycles, particularly amid growing divisions between the hard left and moderates over Israel.” We saw this playing out last week in the election-night speeches of Shontel Brown, who benefited from contributions from pro-Israel groups and thanked “my Jewish brothers and sisters,” and Nina Turner, who complained about “evil money” from outside groups. The Democratic Majority for Israel super PAC spent nearly $1 million to boost Brown. Raghu Manavalan is the host of POLITICO's Playbook. Jenny Ament is the senior producer for POLITICO Audio. President Biden made some big immigration promises. And he’s already delivered on some of them, signing executive orders to repeal the so-called “Muslim travel ban” and halt construction of the border wall. But the centerpiece of his plan — a bill providing a pathway to citizenship for millions of immigrants — faces a steep uphill battle in Congress. POLITICO’s Laura Barrón-López reports. Plus, Biden set his sights on 1.5 million vaccines a day. And banks say a technical glitch is preventing small businesses from getting relief. Welcome to Majority.FM's AM QUICKIE! Brought to you by justcoffee.coop TODAY'S HEADLINES: In a stunning 6-3 decision led by a conservative justice, the U.S. supreme court ruled that the 1964 Civil Rights act protects gay and transgender people from workplace discrimination. Meanwhile, new audio obtained by the New York Times shows that Vice President Mike Pence urged state Governors to repeat a B.S. claim about coronavirus infection rates in order to make the White House’s complete failure look a little less bad. And lastly, a new report by the Intercept shows that Eliott Engel, the dinosaur Congressman from New York’s 16th district, has been taking dark money from a GOP linked group in order to fight off an insurgent primary campaign by a progressive middle school principal. THESE ARE THE STORIES YOU NEED TO KNOW: Supreme Court Sides With Trans Rights The Supreme Court ruled on a historic set of cases on Monday that firing an employee for being gay, lesbian or transgender violates the 1964 civil rights act. The court took into account two lawsuits over discrimination of gay men and the case of Aimee Stephens, a transgender woman who was fired from her job after she came out to her employer. Stephens died in May, but her estate continued her case. The decision was shocking, as Trump’s two Supreme Court picks had basically locked in the majority of the court to the conservative side. But both Chief Justice John Roberts and Neil Gorsuch voted with the more liberal members of the court, leaving only Alioto, Clarence Thomas and of course, Bret Kavanaugh, to dissent. Gosuch, who was Trump’s first appointment, wrote the majority’s opinion. But as we mentioned in yesterday’s quickie, this doesn’t mean trans rights are safe from the Trump administration -- last week, the administration made a rule change that severely endangered trans rights in respect to discrimination suits connected to healthcare. The Trump administration has made it very clear where it stands on trans issues, and the three conservative judges who dissented also made it clear which side they’re on. If you want an example, look no further than the court’s other major decision today: to not hear any cases on the doctrine of “qualified immunity,” which has served to protect police officers from facing consequences for mistakes they made on the job. Gorsuch and Roberts sided with liberals on the Equal Rights Act decision, but if their votes are what the greater struggle for progress relies on in the future, we’re still in a shaky place. Pence Pushed Coronavirus Lies Meanwhile, the liars in Trump’s inner circle just can’t stop. According to audio obtained by the New York Times, Vice President Mike Pence personally encouraged state governors to spread a debunked claim about the relationship between widespread testing and coronavirus infection rates. The claim is basically that upticks in infection rates are just a result of us discovering more cases through testing, and don’t represent the virus actually resurging. But experts have found that the rate of cases is increasing faster than the increase in testing. Pence, or whoever writes his talking points, surely knew this, but they pushed it on governors anyway, asking them to QUOTE “Encourage people with the news that we’re safely reopening the country.” ENDQUOTE. Pence minimized all this, of course, because human life clearly doesn’t matter when the big strong president’s optics are concerned. This is what the Administration’s response has always been: claiming that everything was fine, claiming that they were doing great when things were clearly proven to be not fine, and eventually just claiming that the whole crisis is over and we won. None of these things are true, of course. The virus is rising in 22 states, and we have a long road ahead even in places where the curve has flattened out. But it is helpful to have concrete examples of how far the Trump administration is willing to go to preserve its image. Engel Takes Dirty Dark Money New York Rep. Eliott Engel, the current head of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, is in deep trouble in his primary for re-election. And a new report by the Intercept shows he’s willing to accept pretty much any help he can get to win -- even if it comes from the Republicans. Engel represents New York’s 16th district, which is safely blue. But his primary opponent is a young, energized middle school principal named Jamaal Bowman. Bowman has recently picked up a number of high profile endorsements including AOC, Bernie Sanders, and the New York Times. Engel, meanwhile, got Hillary Clinton’s endorsement on Monday, and other establishment Democrats figures are circling the wagons around him. According to a new report by the Intercept, Engel’s campaign is benefitting from a weird dark money chain by a GOP-linked super PAC. The group, called Americans for Tomorrow’s Future, isn’t spending directly on his campaign, probably because it also funnels money to overwhelmingly Republican causes including Mitch McConnell’s re-election campaign. Instead, Americans for Tomorrow’s Future gave $100,000 to another Super PAC, Democratic Majority for Israel, which is in turn doing attack ads on Bowman. Pretty shady stuff if you ask me! If the GOP is this interested in making sure Engel keeps his seat, maybe he’s not the best representative of the so-called opposition party. Just a thought. AND NOW FOR SOME QUICKER QUICKIES: A man shot a protester at a demonstration in Albuquerque, New Mexico on Monday night, following a confrontation in which protesters attempted to tear down a racist monument to a spanish Conquistador and were opposed by an armed far-right. Police responded to the scene and arrested members of the militia, and then faced off with protesters instead of taking their statements as to the shooting. It’s unclear if the shooter was a member of the militia, but this is sure to be a big story today, keep an eye out for more details as they come out. The New York Police Department is eliminating the massive force of plain-clothes police officers that make up the force’s anti-crime teams, which have been responsible for numerous shootings and accusations of excessive force over the years. The officers aren’t getting fired of course, just reassigned, so it remains to be seen how much of a real reform this is. After making a big splashy statement by painting Black Lives Matter on 16th street, D.C. mayor Muriel Bowser has decided that well, that’s as far as she’s going to go. In an interview with NPR on Monday, she said she was still committed to her original budget, which proposes a 3.3 percent increase in the DC police’s funding. North Korea is making a ruckus again, threatening to send troops into the Demilitarized Zone with South Korea if defectors don’t stop sending leaflets over the border. Early on Tuesday morning, South Korean authorities reported that the North had gone a step further, blowing up the joint liaison building where the two countries had previously negotiated. That’s all for the Majority Report’s AM Quickie today. Stay tuned for the full show with Sam this afternoon. It's the final countdown to the Iowa caucus, and establishment Democrats are terrified of surging socialist Bernie Sanders -- but they're not quite sure how to attack him. The only folks considering how to really go at him are groups like Third Way and the Democratic Majority for Israel super PAC. It's not working terribly well. Joe Biden still has the inside lane on the national level, but Iowa and New Hampshire look good for Bernie. Sanders has also taken the lead in betting markets, for what that's worth. Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™ participated in a media conference call hosted by Congressman Joe Kennedy III and advocates fighting for transgender equality. The call followed an organizational meeting hosted by Kennedy with colleagues and representatives from organizations including the American Civil Liberties Union, Lambda Legal, National Center for Transgender Equality, the Palm Center, PFLAG and Human Rights Campaign to discuss the Trump Administration's efforts to ban trans troops, erode protections for trans students and workers and take away health care for trans patients. Kennedy has been Chair of the Congressional LGBTQ Equality Caucus’s Transgender Equality Task Force since 2017 and was outraged at the Trump administration attempt to erase the identities of approximately 2 million people in the country who are transgender by proposing that the U.S. Health & Human Services (HHS) legally define sex under Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 to only be by the sex they are born with. Kennedy in his opening remarks talks about how the Trump administration from day one has been targeting our LGBTQ community especially members of our trans community including our youth in schools and strategically attacking trans soldiers by attempting to redefine our trans community out of existence. First Congressman Kennedy introduced Luc Athayde-Rizzaro from the National Center for Transgender Equality, Policy Counsel who advocates to ensure transgender people can access life-affirming, nondiscriminatory health care at the federal and state level. Then we heard from Aaron Belkin, Founding Director of the Palm Center one of the most effective LGBTQ rights organizations in the United States who addressed the transgender military issue and more followed by Sharon McGowan, Lambda Legal, Chief Strategy Officer and Legal Director who talked about Lambda Legal’s efforts to resist any attempt by the Trump Administration or any other opponent of LGBTQ equality to roll back our community’s progress. Next we heard from Ian Thompson, American Civil Liberties Union, Senior Legislative Representative who works to advance the organization’s civil liberties and civil rights agenda in Congress and the executive branch by focusing on LGBTQ rights, HIV/AIDS and sex education. Thompson talked about the Amy Stevens Case twice delayed by US Supreme Court. Then David Stacy, Human Rights Campaign, Government Affairs Director talked about why the Equality Act should be a priority for the new Democratic Majority in the House of Representatives come 2019. Stacy leads HRC’s federal policy team including advocacy efforts on Capitol Hill and the executive branch. The call concluded with openly trans Diego Miguel Sanchez, PFLAG, Director of Advocacy, Policy & Partnerships who talked about the crisis facing our transgender youth in our school systems. Since 1973 PFLG has been advancing LGBTQ equality through its mission of support, education and advocacy. Hear 450+ LGBT Interviews @OUTTAKE VOICES

Her latest book places a pressing issue of the day, how to fully incorporate newcomers into US society, in a political context. Rather than emphasize the individual, this book focuses on the group and the political resources immigrant groups possess, access, and are shut out from. The qualitative method focused on six cities captures a rich understanding of nuance and detail. Read along with other more quantitative analyses of the subject, the field of political science has been better able of late to grapple with the immigrant question. Andersen’s book is a highly recommended read. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
