Ben Peterson describes his upbringing as “emotionally insane”—a father with OCD and myriad addiction issues; a mother with borderline personality disorder; a constant parade of screaming matches. That, combined with the emotional scars of seeing combat duty in the Middle East with the Army, meant the deck was stacked against Ben in terms of ever forming healthy attachments with other people. But through introspection, close friends who weren't just work buddies, and a commitment to the responsibilities God places on us as men, he was able to save his marriage from disaster and build healthier relationships. Ben talks with Nate Dewberry this week about unpacking our childhood traumas and why they make us the way we are, as well as spiritual warfare, the true purpose of marriage, and how his ministry, Engage Your Destiny, is helping soldiers and veterans deal with the traumas they've brought home from war.Visit The Redeemed's website for downloadable discussion question sets, show notes, inspirational articles, more resources, or to share your testimony.Join our Exclusive Newsletter: Signup today and be the first to get notified on upcoming podcasts and new resources! The Redeemed is an organization giving men from all backgrounds a supportive, judgment-free environment, grounded in Christian love without demanding participation in any faith tradition, where they can open up about their challenges, worries, and failures—and celebrate their triumphs over those struggles. Combat veteran Ben Peterson joins us to discuss the glaring challenges in America's individualistic society, especially for people who have experienced the tight-knit military community. He offers practical advice to help you find your tribe, embrace your purpose, and be vulnerable about the struggles you're facing. Key Takeaways Our souls and psyches thrive when we are part of a tribe. The transition from tribe culture to individualistic culture is an extreme challenge for veterans. We are in a war for the souls of men. The strongest men are the ones who are willing to be honest about their shortcomings and struggles. Ben Peterson Ben Peterson is a Jesus Follower, husband, father, and combat veteran. In 2016, Ben founded Engage Your Destiny, a nonprofit ministry that exists to engage with the military, veterans, and their families to lead them into their destiny. Ben and his wife, Rachel, live in Tennessee with their son. Key Quotes 27:29 - "Where's my 10,000 souls? I just think it's so important to live with that mindset. It doesn't have to be a fear based mindset, but this is the reality of the kingdom, and there is heaven and hell, and there are realities to us being disobedient, and there is free will and there's consequences for that. That's part of kind of the military coming out, because if you don't do your job, people die. And that's the same thing in the kingdom. There's a reason that Paul used the reference of the soldiers so much because we are in a war for the for the souls of men." 31:18 - "We can lean into some of those woundings, from a sense of humility and being honest that, you know what, I'm never going to be perfect until Christ comes back or until I go home. And in Him, I'm a new creature. And that gives me such a sense of peace and satisfaction, that my wounds are okay. It's okay to be vulnerable." Ben Peterson is our guest speaker today. Ben is a Jesus Follower, husband, father, and combat veteran. He believes with everything in his soul that nothing is impossible for those who have faith. Ben served in Iraq during the surge in 2008-2009. He lost 7 of his brothers in combat, experienced the fallout of suicide bombers at a local school, daily mortar attacks, and held the position of a Chaplains assistant to perform the duties of a personal security detail to the Chaplain. In 2016 Ben founded Engage Your Destiny a nonprofit ministry that exists to engage with military, veterans and their families to lead them into their destiny. EYD creates events that engage with our heroes where they're at and then leads them into programs which will resource them mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually. Out of this work in 2020, during the height of Covid, Ben birthed the Heroes Honor Festival which took place at the Daytona International Speedway with Toby Keith, Justin Moore, Craig Morgan, Ron Desantis, Oliver North and hosted over 35,000 attendees. Through the event 1200 veterans were led into healing programs to resource and restore them.Learn more about Ben on his website: https://www.thebenpeterson.com/

NHL – Hall of Famer Bobby Hull, the Golden Jet, dies at 84 Hall of Fame forward Bobby Hull, who helped the Chicago Black Hawks win the 1961 Stanley Cup Final, has died. Hull was 84. The two-time MVP was one of the most prolific scorers in NHL history, leading the league in goals seven times. Nicknamed “The Golden Jet” for his speed and blond hair, he posted 13 consecutive seasons with 30 goals or more from 1959-72. Hull and Stan Mikita powered Chicago to the NHL title in 1961. Hull remains the Blackhawks' career leader with 62 playoff goals. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1983 and his No. 9 sweater was retired by Chicago that same year. Hull's brother, Dennis, played for Chicago for most of his 14 years in the league, and Bobby's son, Brett, spent 19 years in the NHL. Bobby and Brett each won the Hart Trophy as league MVP, becoming the first father-son duo to accomplish the feat. Bobby won in 1964-65 and 1965-1966, while Brett won in 1990-1991. NBA – National Basketball Association Last Night Dallas Mavericks 111, Detroit Pistons 105 Mavs 111, Pistons 105 – Doncic scores 53 in return, Mavericks beat Pistons 111-105 Luka Doncic had 53 points in his return to the lineup and Spencer Dinwiddie scored 10 of his 12 in the fourth quarter as the Dallas Mavericks rallied to beat the Detroit Pistons 111-105. Four of Doncic's five career 50-point games have come this season. He scored a career-best 60 against the New York Knicks in a game that went to overtime on Dec. 27. Bojan Bogdanovic had 29 points and Saddiq Bey scored 18 for the Pistons. Tonight Los Angeles Clippers at Chicago Bulls, 8:00 p.m. NCAAMBKB – Men's College Basketball Tonight Northern Illinois at Western Michigan, 7:00 p.m. Central Michigan at Kent State, 7:00 p.m. Ohio at Eastern Michigan, 7:00 p.m. NCAAMBKB – Purdue a unanimous No. 1 in AP Top 25; Vols up to No. 2 Purdue is this season’s first unanimous No. 1 team in the AP men's college basketball poll. The Boilermakers have won eight straight games since a one-point loss to Rutgers on Jan. 2. They were followed in the AP Top 25 by Tennessee, Houston, Alabama and Arizona in the top five. No. 11 Baylor and No. 17 Providence made the biggest jumps, each climbing six spots. Auburn had the biggest drop, falling 10 spots to No. 25. No. 21 Indiana and No. 22 San Diego State rejoined the poll at the expense of Charleston and New Mexico. NCAAWBKB – South Carolina tops AP Top 25; Ohio State tumbles South Carolina, Stanford and LSU are the top teams in the latest women’s AP Top 25 college basketball rankings. South Carolina is No. 1 for the 32nd consecutive week. Only UConn (51 and 34 weeks) and Louisiana Tech (36) have had longer runs at No. 1. Indiana and UConn round out top five. Ohio State lost all three of its games last week and dropped from No. 2 to No. 10. NCAAFB – Rashada case in Florida highlights issues in NIL, recruiting Using name, image and likeness compensation to recruit college athletes is still very much against NCAA rules. The recent de-commitment from Florida by blue chip quarterback Jaden Rashada shows that NIL is definitely a factor in decisions. Booster-funded collectives are taking on a big role in compensating athletes. Schools can only hope they are acting within the rules and in their best interest. Inserting a third-party in the recruiting process between coaches and recruits has only complicated things. Experts say the collectives should focus on athletes who are already on campus. Bojan Bogdanovic had 29 points and Saddiq Bey scored 18 for the Pistons. Hull remains the Blackhawks’ career leader with 62 playoff goals. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1983 and his No. 9 sweater was retired by Chicago that same year. Hull’s brother, Dennis, played for Chicago for most of his 14 years in the league, and Bobby’s son, Brett, spent 19 years in the NHL. Bobby and Brett each won the Hart Trophy as league MVP, becoming the first father-son duo to accomplish the feat. Bobby won in 1964-65 and 1965-1966, while Brett won in 1990-1991. Bojan Bogdanovic had 29 points and Saddiq Bey scored 18 for the Pistons. As we continue to highlight our partners in the Veterans Service Alliance, a group of non-profit organizations coming together to make a global impact in the fight against veteran suicide, we're shining the spotlight on Engage Your Destiny, led by CEO Ben Peterson. Ben spent 8 years in the Army, deploying to Iraq during the surge in 2008. His time in a Combat Aviation Brigade was challenged by fellow soldiers killed in action, suicide, and tragic civilian casualties. After battling post traumatic stress, alcohol dependency and family issues, Ben turned to his faith, community, counseling and recreation to recover from the traumatic experiences of combat. The power of Ben's story is his ability to bring authenticity and honesty while breaking down the of core principles of resiliency. In the beginning of 2016 he felt the call to start a mission to help veterans and their families heal from their experiences. This call led to the fulfillment of a vision Ben had to bring honor, hope and healing to Vietnam Veterans, as 35,000 people gathered at the Daytona International Speedway in May of 2022 for the Heroes Honor Festival. 10,000 Vietnam Veterans were welcomed home, 1,200 enrolled in PTSD programs, and hundreds more found healing. Ben Peterson is an Afghanistan War veteran who was taken by the reception he received when he came home from his tour of duty. He was welcomed by bands playing, flags flying high, and cheering crowds. This is in stark contrast to the pictures he had seen when the Vietnam veterans came home. He also noticed that the Vietnam vets, even after being treated so badly, committed themselves to serve their fellow veterans. Armed with a sizeable list of sponsors, he and his organization are diligently working to ensure a proper welcome home for these maligned warriors. Listen to learn about the plans under way to have the largest gathering of Vietnam Veterans at the end of May in Daytona Beach. He is hoping for over 30,000 vets to attend.
