The highs and lows, the laughter and tears - it is an incredible story that will captivate you.      Thanks to our new partner Werribee Renault, open 7 days a week at  22 Morris Road Hoppers Crossing. This week we continue our conversation and discuss family encouraging his art and writing and other influences that kept him going, poetry as a tool for social change, and what he is creative currently working on. Billy Stanley grew up in the backwaters of the D'arbonne Bayou on the outskirts of West Monroe, Louisiana. After exhausting his literary ambitions in the twin cities of Northeast Louisiana he took off to Provincetown Massachusetts to become Stanley Kunitz‘s garbageman for a few summers. He humbled himself before Yusef Komuyakaa at the end of Cape Cod. Dave Brinks agitated him on the streets of the Big Easy as Billy yawped his bona fides. He then fell in love and shoveled snow in New York's capital. Shaker ghosts in Watervliet haunted him on early morning sunrises in the dead of winter. Adam Goldsworthy teaches him the poetry of nature as Livio Levante teaches him the riches of nature. Billy says that “Poetry is man's attempt to rationalize the magnificence of nature in the face of our human hubris. Hope you like mine, I do.” On March 27, 2006, Billy read his poem "Dental Hygienists" at the Poets Speak Loud open mic at the Lark Tavern. In our conversation, we talk about where that poem came from and much, much more.

Join me on the Fast Track to Grant Writer: www.teresahuff.com/vip   A lot of people ask me how they should start the grant writing process. In this episode I talk with my friend Kent Sanders, a ghostwriter, about the connections between ghostwriting and grant writing. He reminds us of some foundational things we should prioritize in our journeys.    First Lesson: Be okay with imperfection. Nothing is going to be perfect. Give grace to yourself and to your writing. Care about and be proud of what you do; don't nitpick everything about it.    Parallels Between Ghostwriting and Grant Writing Be up for the challenge. Just like the client, writer, editor, and publisher may all want something different out of a book, everyone involved in the grant process will want a little something different out of it. You as the writer want one thing, the receiver may want another thing, and the people benefiting may want another. Be ready to tackle that challenge! And be prepared to listen. Have a good relationship with your client. Camaraderie can make a huge difference when it comes to the efficiency and stress levels involved in any task. Be easy to work with. Show respect, provide clear communication, and be on top of your responsibilities.  Be on time with the project. Or better yet, early. Be a stress reliever to those around you. You're here to make things better, not worse.    So Where Do You Start? Begin by listening to the people you're writing for, be empathetic, learn their stories, and then tackle every task each step of the way! You've got this!   Challenge Question: How can you apply one of the above parallels to your grant writing process?   Meet Kent Sanders:  Kent Sanders is the founder of Inkwell Ghostwriting, which helps leaders grow their business through books and other content. He is also the author and co-author of numerous books, including 18 Words to Live By: A Father's Wisdom on What Matters Most and co-author of The Faith of Elvis: A Story Only a Brother Can Tell with Billy Stanley, Elvis Presley's stepbrother.    In addition to writing books for himself and his clients, Kent loves to help other writers. It's Tuesday, October 11th, A.D. 2022. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Kevin Swanson Analysis of ministries to the persecuted church According to The Worldview's analysis of the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability's numbers, Western Christian care agencies for the persecuted church provided 27% more assistance to the suffering body of Christ in 2021 than 2020.   The five largest persecution aid ministries spent a total of $121 million in 2021, up from $96 million in 2020.  Our analysis found Persecution Project, Barnabas Aid, and Open Doors ministries had the lowest ratio of administration and publicity to total expenditures ratio (over three years). Their efficiency with charitable funds ran 9.3%, 10.8%, and 9.7% respectively. Voice of the Martyrs maintained a ratio of administration costs at a ratio of 15.3%, and International Christian Concern maintained a ratio of 16.8%. Open Doors was retaining more of the income, with a 2021 expenditures-to-income ratio of only 65%. And Barnabas Aid indicated the highest need of funds, with an expenditures-to-income ratio of 108%.   You can reference ecfa.org/Members to do your own analysis before funding these ministries.  Jesus said: “Sell your possessions, and give to the needy. Provide yourselves with moneybags that do not grow old, with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail.” (Luke 12:33-34) The financial cost of the hurricanes Although Cornwall Alliance asserts that the incidence of forest fires and hurricanes are not necessarily worse than they have been in other periods of history, property damage does seem to be on the rise. In the providence of God, estimates for damage wrought by Hurricane Ian will total between $41 and $70 billion. The 21st century is shaping up to be hard on the United States. According to our Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, 2022 will turn out to be the eighth worst hurricane and fire season in recorded history. The fifth worst year was 2020.  The fourth worst year was 2012. The third worst year was 2021. The second worst year was 2005, when Hurricane Katrina hit Louisiana. And the worst natural disaster year was 2017, racking up $366 billion in losses, when American shores were slammed with Hurricane Harvey, Hurricane Irma, and Hurricane Maria.  The total loss of life caused by Hurricane Ian now exceeds 100, making this the deadliest storm hitting America since Hurricane Katrina in 2005, which killed 1,833 people, and Hurricane Agnes in 1972, in which 122 lost their lives. You can help the Hurricane Ian victims here. Samaritan's Purse organized 1,000 people for Operation Clean-up Samaritan's Purse has organized a clean-up operation for Southwestern Florida, reports The Christian Post.  As of Monday, 1,000 volunteers are on the ground. Franklin Graham introduced the campaign, stating that, “Everything we do, we want to do it in the name of Jesus Christ. I want people to know that God loves them. He hasn't forgotten them.”  U.S. stocks crater The U.S. stocks continue to crater. The NASDAQ lost 14% over the last month, and another 6% over the last four days. Since January of this year, the NASDAQ is down 34%, Bitcoin is down 60%, and gold is down 7%. Russian missiles fired on Ukraine The Ukraine war shows no signs of abating. Death rained from the sky as Russian missiles hit cities across Ukraine on Monday, right into the heart of Kyiv, the nation's capital. Russian President Vladimir Putin said the strikes were a consequence for the Ukrainian strike on a Russian bridge over the weekend. The U.S. has poised itself as a significant player in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, as the President approved another $12.3 billion of military aid to the conflict a week ago. This is in addition to $15.2 billion appropriated so far this year.  The European Union has provided about $2.5 billion to the Ukraine war. The EU and U.S. contributions to the war is about twice the Ukrainian military budget.  Communist Cuba greenlights homosexual faux marriage Communist Cuba has voted to legitimize homosexual faux marriage.   Two-thirds of the nation showed up at the polls to approve a government-endorsed policy to allow surrogate pregnancies and unnatural sexual relationships.   This comes exactly 100 years after the Bolsheviks were the first in the modern world to approve of homosexuality, with a revision of the criminal code in 1922. Skyrocketing elder fraud And finally, elder fraud is on the rise.   The FBI reports a four-fold increase over 2017. Now, our elderly are scammed out of $1.7 billion per year. The most common scams are government impersonation (including IRS and Social Security scams), sweepstakes scams, robocalls featuring the question, “Can you hear me?, and the Grandparent scam, in which the voice begins with “Hi, Grandma, do you know who this is?” It usually involves a plea for overdue rent, car repairs, or jail bonds. God's Word reminds us this day: 'You shall rise before the gray-headed and honor the presence of an old man, and fear your God: I am the Lord.” (Leviticus 19:32) Close And that's The Worldview in 5 Minutes on this Tuesday, October 11th, in the year of our Lord 2022. Seize the day for Jesus Christ. Print story The Faith of Elvis Elvis Presley's stepbrother, Billy Stanley, has just released a memoir, entitled “The Faith of Elvis: The Story only a Brother Can Tell.”   The author told The Christian Post that he is convinced Elvis was a Christian. “He constantly read the Bible. This guy read it every day of his life. He was always in the Bible.” Billy recalls the last conversation he had with Elvis two days before he died on August 14th, 1977. Elvis asked Billy if he believed that "God forgives you for all your sins?” Billy responded, “Yes he did.” Presley replied, "Good, I just wanted to hear you say that." Elvis Presley's life has been well documented for various scandals relating to drugs and breaking the seventh commandment, “You shall not commit adultery,” in Exodus 20:14. God is the Judge, and the Redeemer of His people.

For those who saw this summer's movie hit “Elvis”, one quickly realizes that the entertainer known as ‘The King of Rock and Roll' had many demons in his life. Fame, fortune, and bad influences fueled a persona of Elvis Presley that was sometimes chaotic, drug addled, and filled with eccentricities. But the Elvis our guest Billy Stanley knew was quite different from the one the world came to love and adore for his rich, baritone voice, provocative stage presence, and a seemingly endless string of musical hits (149 to be exact). After his mother married Elvis' father in 1960, Billy arrived at Graceland as a wide-eyed seven year old, not quite sure what to make of his new surroundings and a brother inlaw who was the most famous person in the world. What he found might surprise you. From the first time he received a bear hug from Elvis to the last conversation they ever had, there was always one constant: the King of Rock and Roll had a passion for sharing God's love with as many people as he could. In his new book, “The Faith of Elvis: A Story Only a Brother Can Tell”, Billy walks readers through Elvis's Christian journey – from the notes he made in his worn and well-read Bible, to an insightful look into how he wove faith into every part of his life, as well as touching family stories about the person the world and pop culture never knew.Billy joins us on the Crossmap Podcast to share details about Elvis' faith and beliefs about God. Listen as he shares why he thinks Elvis gave too much of himself to the world without focusing enough on his faith and family, and what the King of Rock and Roll taught him about faith that Billy still carries with him today.Links to Bill StanleyThe Faith of Elvis: A Story Only a Brother Can Tell on AmazonLinks to Crossmap Crossmap Website Crossmap Facebook

Elvis Presley was many things to many people, but few see him as a religious figure. He recorded several songs with religious themes, including Amazing Grace and How Great Thou Art, but rarely spoke publicly about his beliefs. Now, his step-brother, Billy Stanley has co-written a book, The Faith of Elvis, telling the story of the singer's interest in religion and in particular his love of the Bible. He shares his personal memories of Elvis, and how his songs were often inspired by his Christian faith. About 10% of British Muslims are black and some have experienced racism from other Muslims. The Muslim Council of Britain has acknowledged that as a "minority within a minority" they have often been marginalised, even within Muslim communities. They have just published a report examining what life is like for black British Muslims. It brings together around 40 essays from Black, African and Afro-Caribbean Muslims in the UK. We ask what needs to change to allow black Muslims to be more widely embraced and their contribution recognised in the UK. The tradition of music making in Britain's cathedrals goes back centuries. Today, the choral music produced at many cathedrals is of the highest quality. But a report from the Cathedral Music Trust suggests it is facing a crisis. In recent times, two UK cathedrals have dissolved their choirs. Others are facing severe financial pressures. The Trust suggests that churches should invest in music as a core part of the service they provide to the community. But is it reasonable to expect churches to prioritise supporting music, when there are so many other demands on their funds? As you may or may not know, yesterday I became a published author.  On May 17th Beyond Normal: a field guide to embrace adventure, explore the wilderness, and design an extraordinary life with kids was publicly available. While it is easy to think this is a summit experience, and I certainly am taking time to celebrate this accomplishment, I also know this is the beginning of a journey. Publishing a book in some ways is just the beginning. I didn't write the book for me.  This isn't about me writing a book, it's because I wanted to share what I have learned to support others in designing an adventurous life with kids.  Before I get into the episode today on becoming a writer, I wanted to share 3 tips on how to help authors spread their message.  Most of them do not cost you a dime.  Whether you do this for my book, Kent Sander's book, or other authors I have on the show.  The call to action will be to choose one of these 10 generous option to take action on this week.   Generous Calls to Action to support your favorite authors: Request a copy of the book at your local library. All you have to do is google "suggest a purchase (city you live in) library". Usually there is a form to fill out requiring your library card number and info about the book: Name: Beyond Normal: A field guide to embrace adventure, explore the wilderness and design an extraordinary life with kids Author: Heidi Dusek Publisher: Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing ISBN: 978-1-950721-21-4 Purchase a copy as a gift or even to place in the Free Little Library near you! Share any social media posts related to the book. While many only think about the launch date, social media posts will be happening for months after the book is published. Take a picture and post on your own social media and tag the author or the book in your post.   All of these options are listed in the show notes for today and will also be shared in social media over the next 10 days.   Website for this episode: https://ordinarysherpa.com/075 To purchase a signed copy of Beyond Normal Book: https://ordinarysherpa.com/Follow on Instagram: @ordinarysherpa I would describe our guest as one of the most humble and generous entrepreneurs I know.  You will hear in this episode how we met and in many ways you could say we are almost complete opposites, which is why I knew I needed to be a part of his Daily Writer Community to get my book to the published finish line.  Along the way he has been more than a supporter.  He has designed content based on what I asked, he has put me in the hot seat to prioritize where to focus my time, and yesterday he purchased 5 print copies of my book to give away.   Kent Sanders is the founder of Inkwell Ghostwriting, which helps leaders grow their business through books and other content. He is the host of the Daily Writer podcast, which helps writers cultivate the habits for creative success, and the founder of the Daily Writer membership community. He lives just outside of St. Louis and enjoys spending time outdoors with his wife and teenage son. Key Takeaways Books are one of the few forms of magic left in the world because many people want to do, but seldom actually do.  Books are inherently respected and offer a level of impact and credibility that are hard to attain through other means.   Kent's wife was the impetus for him taking action to write his first book.  “You have talked about book ideas for years and you've never done anything about it, so I don't want to hear about any more book ideas.” A healthy challenge from those we love can change the trajectory of our lives.   It's hard to quantify a “good writer.” Kent's definition of a good writer is if the writing does what it's intended to.  Whatever the purpose is, if writing accomplishes the goal that is good writing.  Writing is not really about good communication skills.   Will you accept the fact that you are already a write and what are you going to do about it? A book is the product of a team of people sharing their skills to improve the outcome.  Between the designer, editor, formatter all are critical to having a great final product of which the author tells the story. Writing a book does not require to have to have all the answers, you just need to determine what questions to ask and compile other people's answers.   Kent uses questions on social media to help determine what struggles people have related to writing.  People will put you in a box anyway so define the box for them.  Rather than positioning himself as the guru or expert, Kent refers to himself as the crash test dummy.  Being immersed in community with people who will ask you questions and challenge you in a thoughtful way.  If you think you can help people and you don't do it you are really doing them a disservice.  The Daily Writer Community is designed to support aspiring writers and support writing accountability.  The fundamental premise is human connection with the intent and interest in writing.   Human connection is the antidote of doubt.  Community is a two-way street. Community through human connection is designed to contribute and to receive others contributions.   If you are simply absorbing knowledge and not taking action it is likely you will stay stuck living life in the status quo. If you feel stuck then perhaps the first question towards taking action is “Why not you?” I am purchasing his book 18 words to live by to give to my husband for Father's Day (husband if you are listening, act surprised in a few weeks).  A generous act is to do something to help an author connect with their audience by sharing their message.     I hope this episode inspires you to explore the stories others have pour their time and talents into.  To support some of your favorite authors in new ways.  If you have ever had a yearning to write a book, then reach out to me or Kent.  Be curious and ask questions.  Perhaps you will add published author to your resume and inspire others with your writing.    To Connect with or Follow Kent SandersPodcast: Daily Writer Podcast Website/Community: https://dailywriterlife.com/  Email: kent@dailywriterlife.com  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dailywriterlife/

In this episode, we welcome Billy Stanley who was our featured reader at Poets Speak Loud at the Lark Tavern on March 27, 2006. Billy Stanley grew up in the backwaters of the D'arbonne Bayou on the outskirts of West Monroe, Louisiana. After exhausting his literary ambitions in the twin cities of Northeast Louisiana he took off to Provincetown Massachusetts to become Stanley Kunitz's garbageman for a few summers. Hope you like mine, I do.” Please welcome, next up to the mic, Billy Stanley To find out more about the great poetry and spoken word community in upstate New York, go to albanypoets.com Our theme music was “Imagination” by Danijel Zambo (https://uppbeat.io/t/danijel-zambo/imagination) License code: 44TCGFPF1L1434BE
