Recently we combined our talents and collaborated on a webinar to teach others how to use podcasts for book writing. During this episode we talk about this method of creating a book outline and using it as a blueprint for podcast episodes. This episodes can then be transformed into the written work you always dreamed of. Key takeaways from our conversation: Podcast Consistency: Kent shares the power of showing up regularly on a podcast, and how you can use daily episodes to build content for a book. Commitment over perfection is key. Crafting Your Outline: Develop a solid book outline before diving into podcast episodes. Utilizing strategies for outlining will transform your content creation process and be your roadmap to success. Podcast Forward Approach: Discover the benefits of aligning your podcast content with your book project and maximizing your efforts. Find a method that works best for you to convert your podcast episodes into book material. This episode is a must listen for aspiring writers and podcasters looking for more ways to share their message. One of the reasons Kent and I did this webinar was to see what people thought of this idea. So let me know what you think. Was this a good idea? Or do if you don't think this is good, let me know. If you think it is great, let me know. That'll help out as we look at more ways to create books and podcasts.
I'm listening! Hopefully you are too, as this week is incredibly fun. I'm joined by “Frasier” writer and consulting producer Bob Daily. Bob was on the writing staff for several seasons of the original run of “Frasier” and he's back on board for the new revival series out now on Paramount+. If you're at all interested in how TV shows like this get made, you're going to find this fascinating. We dig into the world of show development, writers rooms, table reads, and more. Bob is very articulate about his craft but incredibly personable too, and I had a blast hanging with him. Let me know what you think! This will likely be the last show of the year, but I've already got things in the pipeline for next year, so I'll be back soon. Thanks so much for listening. If you want to help the show, please keep listening, leave a nice review or rating, tell your friends about the show, and/or follow me on the socials; it's all appreciated. Join me on the Fast Track to Grant Writer: www.teresahuff.com/vip A lot of people ask me how they should start the grant writing process. In this episode I talk with my friend Kent Sanders, a ghostwriter, about the connections between ghostwriting and grant writing. He reminds us of some foundational things we should prioritize in our journeys. First Lesson: Be okay with imperfection. Nothing is going to be perfect. Give grace to yourself and to your writing. Care about and be proud of what you do; don't nitpick everything about it. Parallels Between Ghostwriting and Grant Writing Be up for the challenge. Just like the client, writer, editor, and publisher may all want something different out of a book, everyone involved in the grant process will want a little something different out of it. You as the writer want one thing, the receiver may want another thing, and the people benefiting may want another. Be ready to tackle that challenge! And be prepared to listen. Have a good relationship with your client. Camaraderie can make a huge difference when it comes to the efficiency and stress levels involved in any task. Be easy to work with. Show respect, provide clear communication, and be on top of your responsibilities. Be on time with the project. Or better yet, early. Be a stress reliever to those around you. You're here to make things better, not worse. So Where Do You Start? Begin by listening to the people you're writing for, be empathetic, learn their stories, and then tackle every task each step of the way! You've got this! Challenge Question: How can you apply one of the above parallels to your grant writing process? Meet Kent Sanders: Kent Sanders is the founder of Inkwell Ghostwriting, which helps leaders grow their business through books and other content. He is also the author and co-author of numerous books, including 18 Words to Live By: A Father's Wisdom on What Matters Most and co-author of The Faith of Elvis: A Story Only a Brother Can Tell with Billy Stanley, Elvis Presley's stepbrother. Just a quick note to let you know we're taking a short break from our daily episodes. Over the next month, I'll be finishing the second draft of the Daily Writer book that releases on November 1st, and I'll also be making several major improvements to our Daily Writer Club as well as my main website, KentSanders.net. When the podcast returns on August 15th, we will be featuring not one, but TWO weekly interviews with amazing writers and creatives. In addition, we'll be continuing our several-month-long series on The Writer's Path, which is a framework for building a writing-based business. In the meantime, I encourage you to go back over the last year's episodes and listen to the ones you haven't caught yet… or better yet, re-listen to them because you often catch things the second or third time that you didn't catch the first. As always, I appreciate you listening and I look forward to returning on August 15th. *** Check out my NEW book: 18 Words to Live By: A Father's Wisdom on What Matters Most. As you may or may not know, yesterday I became a published author. On May 17th Beyond Normal: a field guide to embrace adventure, explore the wilderness, and design an extraordinary life with kids was publicly available. While it is easy to think this is a summit experience, and I certainly am taking time to celebrate this accomplishment, I also know this is the beginning of a journey. Publishing a book in some ways is just the beginning. I didn't write the book for me. This isn't about me writing a book, it's because I wanted to share what I have learned to support others in designing an adventurous life with kids. Before I get into the episode today on becoming a writer, I wanted to share 3 tips on how to help authors spread their message. Most of them do not cost you a dime. Whether you do this for my book, Kent Sander's book, or other authors I have on the show. The call to action will be to choose one of these 10 generous option to take action on this week. Generous Calls to Action to support your favorite authors: Request a copy of the book at your local library. All you have to do is google "suggest a purchase (city you live in) library". Usually there is a form to fill out requiring your library card number and info about the book: Name: Beyond Normal: A field guide to embrace adventure, explore the wilderness and design an extraordinary life with kids Author: Heidi Dusek Publisher: Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing ISBN: 978-1-950721-21-4 Purchase a copy as a gift or even to place in the Free Little Library near you! Share any social media posts related to the book. While many only think about the launch date, social media posts will be happening for months after the book is published. Take a picture and post on your own social media and tag the author or the book in your post. All of these options are listed in the show notes for today and will also be shared in social media over the next 10 days. Website for this episode: https://ordinarysherpa.com/075 To purchase a signed copy of Beyond Normal Book: https://ordinarysherpa.com/Follow on Instagram: @ordinarysherpa I would describe our guest as one of the most humble and generous entrepreneurs I know. You will hear in this episode how we met and in many ways you could say we are almost complete opposites, which is why I knew I needed to be a part of his Daily Writer Community to get my book to the published finish line. Along the way he has been more than a supporter. He has designed content based on what I asked, he has put me in the hot seat to prioritize where to focus my time, and yesterday he purchased 5 print copies of my book to give away. Kent Sanders is the founder of Inkwell Ghostwriting, which helps leaders grow their business through books and other content. He is also the author and co-author of numerous books, including 18 Words to Live By: A Father's Wisdom on What Matters Most and co-author of The Faith of Elvis: A Story Only a Brother Can Tell with Billy Stanley, Elvis Presley's stepbrother. In addition to writing books for himself and his clients, Kent loves to help other writers. He is the host of the Daily Writer podcast, which helps writers cultivate the habits for creative success, and the founder of the Daily Writer membership community. He lives just outside of St. Louis and enjoys spending time outdoors with his wife and teenage son. Key Takeaways Books are one of the few forms of magic left in the world because many people want to do, but seldom actually do. Books are inherently respected and offer a level of impact and credibility that are hard to attain through other means. Kent's wife was the impetus for him taking action to write his first book. “You have talked about book ideas for years and you've never done anything about it, so I don't want to hear about any more book ideas.” A healthy challenge from those we love can change the trajectory of our lives. It's hard to quantify a “good writer.” Kent's definition of a good writer is if the writing does what it's intended to. Whatever the purpose is, if writing accomplishes the goal that is good writing. Writing is not really about good communication skills. Will you accept the fact that you are already a write and what are you going to do about it? A book is the product of a team of people sharing their skills to improve the outcome. Between the designer, editor, formatter all are critical to having a great final product of which the author tells the story. Writing a book does not require to have to have all the answers, you just need to determine what questions to ask and compile other people's answers. Kent uses questions on social media to help determine what struggles people have related to writing. People will put you in a box anyway so define the box for them. Rather than positioning himself as the guru or expert, Kent refers to himself as the crash test dummy. Being immersed in community with people who will ask you questions and challenge you in a thoughtful way. If you think you can help people and you don't do it you are really doing them a disservice. The Daily Writer Community is designed to support aspiring writers and support writing accountability. The fundamental premise is human connection with the intent and interest in writing. Human connection is the antidote of doubt. Community is a two-way street. Community through human connection is designed to contribute and to receive others contributions. If you are simply absorbing knowledge and not taking action it is likely you will stay stuck living life in the status quo. If you feel stuck then perhaps the first question towards taking action is “Why not you?” I am purchasing his book 18 words to live by to give to my husband for Father's Day (husband if you are listening, act surprised in a few weeks). A generous act is to do something to help an author connect with their audience by sharing their message. I hope this episode inspires you to explore the stories others have pour their time and talents into. To support some of your favorite authors in new ways. If you have ever had a yearning to write a book, then reach out to me or Kent. Be curious and ask questions. Perhaps you will add published author to your resume and inspire others with your writing. Who is Kent Sanders? Kent Sanders is an unassuming man of faith, brother to a pastor and a former worship leader himself. He is also a husband and a father of one, Ben Sanders, who turned 18 in 2022. Kent was a professor for many years and recently left that profession to become a ghostwriter. He has authored a few books of his own and has ghostwritten a few so far (and I predict many more to come). Kent hosts The Daily Writer podcast and community, and he is one of the best friends you could ever hope to have. Here are just a couple of the things he had to say in this interview. “I've learned a lot from a lot of people, and nobody is a self-made person. I feel like I've been very fortunate to be able to spend time around people who've really helped me a lot. No person has done that more than my wife, Melanie. Honestly, she's been very, very supportive of all of all this since the very beginning, which I've always really appreciated.” “It's really unusual for somebody to leave a college teaching job to start their own business. I mean, you really rarely ever hear that kind of thing happening.” Find out the following and more: How you can start your own publishing company Current challenges in publishing How ghostwriting is like real estate sales Habits that have made Kent successful How he left teaching to start his own business Why he says he can't think of many things more valuable than what Realtors do What Kent learned about Elvis Presley while ghostwriting a book about Elvis Something simple you can do to change your life Resources KentSanders.net https://www.amazon.com/Artists-Suitcase-Essentials-Creative-Journey-ebook/dp/B011ANJ6HS/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2KT60T5IQPNWT&keywords=the+artist%27s+suitcase&qid=1652125444&s=books&sprefix=the+artist%27s+suitcase%2Cstripbooks%2C79&sr=1-1 (The Artist's Suitcase: 26 essentials for the creative journey) https://www.amazon.com/18-Words-Live-Fathers-Matters-ebook/dp/B09X9BH27M/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1EP7YM2VGROXT&keywords=18+words+to+live+by&qid=1652125400&s=books&sprefix=18+words+to+live+by%2Cstripbooks%2C92&sr=1-1 (18 Words to Live By: A father's wisdom on what matters most) https://www.kentsanders.net/podcast/ (The Daily Writer podcast) https://www.facebook.com/groups/dailywriter (The Daily Writer community) Kent and Inkwell Ghostwriting's editor Jennifer Harshman
Welcome to the weekend edition of the Daily Writer. For a while now, I've been wanting to do a series of conversations focused around mental health for writers. Everybody knows mental health is important, and we see lots of signs of depression, burnout, frustration, anger, and even increasing rates of suicide in society. Writers are not immune to those forces. In many ways, perhaps we are even more susceptible than the average person because we tend to spend a lot of time alone. In light of that, we are featuring a Mental Health Series for Writers during the month of May. Each week, we will feature an interview that relates to themes of mental health. Today's episode features a good friend of mine, Melissa Bloom, who uses her background in molecular biology, clinical trials, and yoga to focus on the new frontier—the brain. Through her Aligned Life Community and one-on-one coaching, she helps people gain a new perspective through which to view their lives. In this conversation, Melissa shares why we need to eliminate the idea of competition, the pursuit of perfection, the concept of missed opportunities, and why we take score way too soon. The result of dealing with all these unhealthy tendencies is that we can move past our fear, doubt, and sense of overwhelm, and into a life where we are creating from a sense of joy and purpose, rather than stress and guilt. Melissa is truly wise soul, and I know you'll be moved by this impactful conversation just as much as I was. You can learn more about Melissa's work, her upcoming book, and more below! Although this podcast is called The Daily Writer, the reality is that many people don't write every day. They may set aside time every couple of days or once a week to work on their writing. I want you to know that this is totally legitimate. You shouldn't take the concept of the “daily writer” too literally. The main point is to write regularly, whatever that looks like for your schedule. The more regularly you do it, the better you will be. On today's episode, you'll find one of the best ways to be more productive with your writing is by batching your work. *** Are you looking for a community of enthusiastic, generous writers to help you build better habits and grow your writing business? A lot of you who are listening are working on books. I'd like to share a method I've been using to write my upcoming Daily Writer book, which will release this coming October. This process is very doable for anyone. I've been doing my Daily Writer podcast since November 2020, well over a year now. As you probably know since you listen to this show, I release a short episode each weekday. Here is what you may not know: each weekday episode is actually the first draft of a daily entry in my Daily Writer book. This will be a book of daily meditations for writers. Each quarter has a specific theme, and each month has a sub-theme within the quarter. But... it all starts with the daily podcast. On today's episode, you'll discover how you can use podcasting to create content for a book. *** Are you looking for a community of enthusiastic, generous writers to help you build better habits and grow your writing business? Welcome again to my monthly business update. As usual, I will focus on three areas: ghostwriting, The Daily Writer, and personal updates. Ghostwriting Here are three important lessons I'm learning: You probably need to raise your prices. Clients are not mainly concerned about your writing ability. Having the right connections makes a huge difference. The Daily Writer Let me highlight a few important things happening: DW is getting more active on Instagram with quotes, writing prompts, and other content coming soon. The Daily Writer Community is growing, with courses coming in November. The first course is "How to Build a Writing Habit." This podcast continues to grow in listenership and provide a source of content to repurpose into other forms. I have started to offer one-on-one coaching to authors to help them get their books written and self-published. (Reach out if interested. Spots are very limited.) I'm working steadily on three books of my own: The Daily Writer, How to Build a Writing Habit (lead magnet), and a secret project! Personal Update I just completed a half-marathon. I'm considering transitioning to a co-working space. I'm loving The Plot by Jean Hanff Korelitz. *** Are you looking for a community of enthusiastic, generous writers to help you build better habits and grow your writing business? Platform… it's one of those words that feels mysterious, intimidating, and maybe even confusing to many authors. You've heard that you need a platform and you're willing to do the work, but why do you need one and how do you build it? My friend Chad Allen is here on this episode to join me for a conversation about these questions and more. Chad is a writer, speaker, editor, and writing coach. As a twenty-year publishing professional, he served in acquisitions and directorial roles for Baker Books, a division of Baker Publishing Group, before going full-time with his own business. He has collaborated with numerous bestselling authors including Michael Hyatt, Jeff Goins, Mark Batterson, Phyllis Tickle, and many others. Chad is also the creator of Book Proposal Academy, an online course, and BookCamp, a mentoring and community hub for writers. His passion is helping writers get their books into the world. He blogs at ChadRAllen.com. Chad holds a B.A. in English from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and an M.A. in Theology from the University of Notre Dame. He and his wife, Alyssa, live with their two children in Grand Rapids, Michigan. In this conversation, you will learn all about your author platform, including the #1 reason publishers turn books down, the best ways to grow your platform, the role of blogging and social media, how to change your mindset about growing your platform, and more. I had the privilege of meeting Chad a couple of years ago at Jeff Goins' Tribe Conference, and I can tell you he is the real deal. He is an excellent book coach and knows more than just about anyone on the planet about what it takes to put together an excellent book. Over the years, I have read and used dozens of books where Chad had a hand in their success… I just didn't know it at the time! In addition, Chad has a special offer for Daily Writer listeners, which is a free 30-day trial of Book Camp, his community that will help you grow your platform. I've talked about this a few times here on the podcast before. But, just in case you haven't heard, I left my teaching job at St. Louis Christian College this past summer in order to focus full-time on ghostwriting and running my Daily Writer membership community. Now that SLCC has announced it will be merging with another school at the end of this school year, I have been reflecting a lot on what I learned as a professor during the previous 17 years. One of the most important things I learned as a teacher is the value of assessment. "Assessment" is a broad term for a set of practices designed to help you see if you're reaching your goals. Most people in higher ed honestly hate assessment because it feels like a huge pain. It's time-consuming and often feels like busy work. However, being in this world taught me the value of taking a detailed, honest look at how you can improve. On today's episode, Kent shares three critical things he learned as a college professor that can help us with our writing. *** Are you looking for a community of enthusiastic, generous writers to help you build better habits and grow your writing business? Here at the Daily Writer, we talk a lot about the habit of writing regularly. That's nothing new. Every good writing teacher talks about the importance of a good writing habit. Another habit that is equally important, yet for some reason emphasized much less, is the publishing habit. If you want to impact other people with your words, you must not only write them… you must also publish them. On today's episode, you'll be reminded why it's vital not to just write, but to share your writing with the world. *** Are you looking for a community of enthusiastic, generous writers to help you build better habits and grow your writing business? A few weeks ago, I stepped away from my full-time teaching job in order to focus on ghostwriting and the Daily Writer. As I have spent some time reflecting on this major change in my life, it occurred to me that I've followed a very simple principle as I have transitioned into several different roles in my work life over the last 25 years. I want to share that principle with you today, along with how you can put it into practice to build your writing business, or whatever other ventures you might eventually want to pursue. It's simply called the Overlap Principle. On this episode, I want to explain what that is and also share my story of overlapping careers a few times to arrive at my current business. Then, on next week's Sunday episode, I'll share some specific tips for overlapping in your own writing business. *** Are you looking for a community of enthusiastic, generous writers to help you build better habits and grow your writing business? We talk a lot about writing habits at the Daily Writer. Why? Because a writing habit ensures that you get the writing done. Without a habit, you will only write when you happen to have time available or the mood strikes you. That's not the way professionals approach their work. You may agree with the importance of a writing habit, but how do you put it into practice? What is the method for actually getting your writing done? In this episode, we will explore four foolproof methods. If you follow any of these techniques, you will be more successful in writing more. Method #1: Writing Sprint Method #2: Pomodoro Technique Method #3: Morning Pages Method #4: Writing Prompts *** Are you looking for a community of enthusiastic, generous writers to help you build better habits and grow your writing business? The central idea of the Daily Writer podcast is the importance of habits and routines to our writing success. There may be some authors who have great success by producing books in sudden bursts of energy every once in a while. However, the vast majority of working writers have schedules, habits, routines, and rituals for a consistent production schedule. On this episode, you'll learn about the writing routines of five famous authors: E. B. White, Stephen King, Ernest Hemingway, Jodi Picoult, and Toni Morrison. You'll also learn how to apply these lessons to your own writing. If you spend much time around writers, you begin to see patterns. There are certain things most writers love, such as telling stories, creating content, and connecting with other writers. However, there are also things that most writers don't enjoy. One of those things is marketing. Most writers perceive that marketing is a pain in the neck, something that distracts them from their real creative work. But what if you could market in a way that makes use of your natural storytelling skills. What if you could it in a way that was natural and fun? My guest today is here to help us do exactly that. His name is Keith Griffis, and he has been a digital marketer for the last 20 years. Keith is here to share his fascinating PowerStory framework, which uses the power of stories to help you communicate. He has taught this same content at places such as MIT, Microsoft, and universities. He is also a self-described geek when it comes to neuroscience and the psychology of influence. Keith is a wonderful storyteller, business strategist, and expert in marketing. In this conversation, he shares why storytelling skills are so vital today, the 5 power stories, how to use them in marketing, and much more. Make sure to grab Keith's PowerStory template via this link. It will help you start telling better stories in your social media posts, blog posts, and content immediately. You can also connect with Keith on Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn. *** If you enjoyed this episode, we would be grateful if you leave a review on Apple Podcasts. It has been quite an eventful week at the Daily Writer. This past week, I did an official public launch of the Daily Writer Community. I know that I have mentioned it several times already here on the podcast, and I even did a full episode a couple of weeks ago sharing about it. But this past week was the first time I really put it out there on social media and shared it more widely than I ever have. On this episode, I wanted to dive into the behind the scenes of creating this group and what I have learned from it. We take a look at these five lessons: 1) Do your market research before you launch something. 2) When you launch, you will be surprised by the people who will ignore you and support you. 3) You must put in the work to build something meaningful. 4) You will never feel ready to launch, but do it anyway. 5) Don't take anything personally. *** Are you looking for a community of enthusiastic, generous writers to help you build better habits and grow your writing business? Here at the Daily Writer, we are a huge advocate for not just writing books, but for reading them. They are a critical facet of your growth as a writer. You will be hard-pressed to come across a great leader in modern history who has not also been a great reader. However, there is a danger in focusing too much on consuming ideas, and not enough on action. Reading doesn't guarantee that your life, writing, or business has improved. In fact, within creative and entrepreneurial circles, there is a “culture of consumption” where each leader and influencer tries to outdo the next by bragging about all the books they have read. On today's episode, Kent reminds us about the dangers of reading too much and taking too little action. *** Are you looking for a community of enthusiastic, generous writers to help you build better habits and grow your writing business? When it comes right down to it, everything about writing success comes down to productivity. We may have great ideas, we may feel inspired, and we may have great connections. We may even have a publishing contract. But if we don't actually produce the work, nothing else matters. I'm excited that my good friend Jennifer Harshman is here to give us some tips to become more productive in our writing and business. Jennifer is a successful editor, book development coach, ghostwriter, and business owner. She is the owner of HarshmanServices.com and the editor of the book Find a Real Editor: Avoiding the Posers and Scammers, which is a helpful guide to evaluating editors for your writing. In this conversation, Jennifer walks us through four obstacles to productivity, which are procrastination, perfectionism, pessimism, and paranoia. She also walks us through several P's that we need to put into practice, which include purpose, planning, persistence, and others. I encourage you to also sign up for Jennifer's email list at her website listed above. You're going to get a lot of great writing, productivity, and editing tips in your inbox. You can also connect with Jennifer on LinkedIn and Facebook. *** If you enjoyed this episode, we would be grateful if you leave a review on Apple Podcasts. I'm honored to have my good friend, Jim Woods, on the show today to help us develop our storytelling chops. Jim is a novelist, story coach, and editor. He has worked with many authors over the years, including some whose books have been on the New York Times bestseller list. Jim is the host of the Finish Your Book Podcast. He is also the founder of Storycrafting, a coaching service that helps you craft your story. Storytelling is one of my favorite topics, so we had a lot of fun in this interview geeking out over stories. Jim walks us through several questions such as these: What's the simplest way to create a story? What separates a great story from a pretty good story? How can you fix your story? How can you build a solid writing habit? You can find Jim at his Storycrafting site, his personal website, or on Facebook. Make sure to also check out his Write Your Book Podcast. *** If you enjoyed this episode, we would be grateful if you leave a review on Apple Podcasts. When we consider the impact of our writing, there are many elements we pay attention to. We spend a lot of time thinking about our audience, our content, our strategy for reaching readers, our habits, our tools and technology, and so forth. But one important element of our writing that often gets overlooked is our "voice." According to my guest today, your voice is a vital element in your communication. In fact, she defines it as "the fingerprint of your communication style." Her name is Tricia Brouk and she is an award-winning director who has worked in theater, film, and television for three decades. Her work includes the writing of two musicals, both produced in New York City, a one-woman show, and four documentaries, two eligible for Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences nominations. Tricia had an extensive career as a dancer performing all over the world. In addition to her work in the entertainment industry, she applies her expertise to the art of public speaking. Tricia founded The Big Talk Academy, where she certifies speakers in the art of public speaking. She has shepherded more than fifty speakers onto more than fifteen TEDx stages in under three years. Tricia is also the host of the award-winning podcast The Big Talk, which is where I first got to know her. I was part of her podcast production team for several years, and I was always impressed by Tricia's discipline and professionalism. When it comes to the art of public speaking, using your voice, or showing up in the world as your authentic self, there is no one I trust more than Tricia Brouk. In our conversation, we focus on some themes from Tricia's new book, The Influential Voice: Saying What You Mean for Lasting Legacy. We talk about the importance of using your unique voice, how to deal with fear, her unique process for writing this book, and much more. Be sure to visit https://www.theinfluentialvoicebook.com/ to pre-order the book by Dec. 18 to get some amazing bonuses. You can also check out Tricia's website or connect with her on Instagram to learn more about her and her work. *** If you enjoyed this episode, we would be grateful if you leave a review on Apple Podcasts.
