Giles Fraser and guests hear from novelist and opinion writer Lisa Solod on her negative experience of marrying outside of her Jewish faith, and from Amy and Takbir, on how they navigate marriage between a Christian and Muslim. What if your Mr or Mrs Right doesn't share your religious tradition and values? Is interfaith marriage a problem? And, what are religious traditions doing in an increasingly liberal, secular society to help couples navigate mixed relationships? To explore Giles is joined by: Eleanor Nesbitt, a Professor in Religions and Education at Warwick University, a Quaker who has been in an interfaith marriage with a Hindu partner. She is a specialist in the religious socialisation of young people of Christian; Hindu and Sikh background.Rev Dr Paul Smith, an Interfaith Advisor for the Diocese of Oxford and author of Intimate Diversity, a book looking at the realities of interfaith marriage in modern Britain. Shaykh Ibrahim Mogra, an Imam from Leicester and former Assistant Secretary General of the Muslim Council of Britain. Eid is a celebration of strength and gratitude where Muslims all around the world come together to mark the end of Ramadan. Nuala McGovern is joined by one of the first Muslim headteachers in the country, Bushra Nasir, author & podcaster Shelina Janmohamed and Executive Board Member at the Muslim Council of Wales Jamilla Hekmoun to discuss what roles they have on this day, from acting as the ‘memory markers' to passing down the rich traditions that keep religious stories and practices alive as well as some of the pressures women can feel at this time. Women across England will be able to get the morning after pill for free from pharmacies from later this year, the Government has said. Emergency contraception is already free of charge from most GPs and sexual health clinics. But ministers say getting it in pharmacies is a "postcode lottery" - with some councils funding free prescriptions, while elsewhere women can pay up to £30. Nuala discusses the plan with Dr Janet Barter, President, Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare. The Government says it's going to create 10,000 new school places for children with special educational needs and disabilities in mainstream schools. Ministers are saying £740 million will be allocated in England over the next three years. It comes as a new report is launched at Westminster today which warns that more and more children are 'losing learning' because their needs are not being met, or they are being suspended or excluded. Nuala discusses the issues and possible solutions with the report's author, Ellie Harris, Aaliyah, a young woman who couldn't attend school due to SEND, and the actress and mother Anna Maxwell Martin and Louise McLeod, the Executive Headteacher of two primary schools in Norfolk.Darkly funny, unsettling, and razor-sharp, I Hope You're Happy by Marni Appleton is a haunting collection of short stories exploring modern womanhood through the lens of horror and satire. From viral photos to eerie performances in dead-end jobs, these stories capture the weirdness of millennial life... where power struggles, fleeting connections, and social media anxieties collide with the surreal. Marni joins Nuala to discuss the themes and her inspiration.Presented by Nuala McGovern Producer: Louise Corley

Do you think women and men are equal in today's society- do they have equal opportunities in education and career development, do they have equal pay for equal work, are there particular obstacles that women face that men don't? What about in the home? In your home- do you split the tasks 50:50? Until women are no longer seen as the primary carer of children or older family members, will there ever be true equality? What about equality in faith. It hasn't always been the case that women and men are treated equally as worshippers in faith. Decades ago, women weren't allowed to participate in the same way that they do now- as readers, or cantors, or collectors. In many Churches men and women were kept apart, in separated aisles,.for fear of temptation or distraction. And of course what about the call to serve? The Catholic Church still will not allow women priests. Anglican and Presbyterian Churches do- but amid some entrenched opposition- to the extent that people have left their Church in protest. And does the Church's treatment of women play a part in how women are seen and treated across wider society? Presenter Audrey Carville in conversation with Presbyterian minister and university chaplain the Reverend Cheryl Meban, theologian Dr Elaine Storkey, retired school principal and self described practising and questioning Catholic Michele Marken and Naomi Green, assistant secretary general of the Muslim Council of Britain.

Watch another of my appearances on TALK TV talking about the dangers of Islam. This time I am asked about my views on the candidates for Muslim Council in UK being ... well Islamic. Their views might seem extreme to us but to them they are just following their religion. It is for us to decide whether their religion is compatible with us or not. The people we call extremists are actually the ones just following the sunnah of the prophet. They are not radicals, Islam itself is radical. These are the uncomfortable truths that people in the West don't seem to want to admit because once you admit them you are obliged to do something about it. A relationship with a brother or sister might well be the longest we ever have. It can be a source of huge mutual support in the sharing of great joys, and in the struggles of tough times. But sibling relationships can also be marked by conflict and rivalry, as we've seen in the public fracture of the relationship between Prince William and Prince Harry. Roy Jenkins meets people who've been estranged from their families for many years, and hears about the heartache family fracture can cause. Dr Lucy Blake, developmental psychologist at the University of the West of England, explains that in her research she's found that family estrangement is more common than we might think, but also how our notions of an 'ideal' family are hard to live up to. Fern Schumer Chapman, author of ‘Brother, Sister, Strangers: Sibling Estrangement and the Road to Reconciliation' examines the taboo around sibling estrangement. We examine how religious belief can be the cause painful disputes, and Assia shares how her conversion to Islam led to estrangement with her family. Amanda Morris from the Muslim Council of Britain explains the support offered to new Muslims, and how cherished sibling relationships are in the Qu'ran. We hear how faith can sometimes help heal divides, and Joe Connor from Elam Ministries explains how they help foster reconciliation between Christian converts and their families.

With his party facing the potential loss of House and Senate control, President Biden had an urgent message for Californians to get out and vote. And the FBI is under fire as a new report of misconduct and "playing politics" surfaces. Founder and President of the Article Three Project, Mike Davis, joins to tell us more about the strong words from members of the House. Meanwhile, the US Senate race in Ohio is coming down to the wire. Republicans are hoping political newcomer and author, JD Vance, will keep the seat from retiring Senator Rob Portman. Finally this evening, there were sounds of moaning and a vacuum, as a popular nation-wide radio show in the US played an abortion on air. National Public Radio aired the piece on Thursday. State Policy Director at Susan B. Anthony of America, Katie Glenn, joins to share her take on the segment from NPR and how it could sway voters either way. Elvis Presley was many things to many people, but few see him as a religious figure. He recorded several songs with religious themes, including Amazing Grace and How Great Thou Art, but rarely spoke publicly about his beliefs. Now, his step-brother, Billy Stanley has co-written a book, The Faith of Elvis, telling the story of the singer's interest in religion and in particular his love of the Bible. He shares his personal memories of Elvis, and how his songs were often inspired by his Christian faith. About 10% of British Muslims are black and some have experienced racism from other Muslims. The Muslim Council of Britain has acknowledged that as a "minority within a minority" they have often been marginalised, even within Muslim communities. They have just published a report examining what life is like for black British Muslims. It brings together around 40 essays from Black, African and Afro-Caribbean Muslims in the UK. We ask what needs to change to allow black Muslims to be more widely embraced and their contribution recognised in the UK. The tradition of music making in Britain's cathedrals goes back centuries. Today, the choral music produced at many cathedrals is of the highest quality. But a report from the Cathedral Music Trust suggests it is facing a crisis. In recent times, two UK cathedrals have dissolved their choirs. Others are facing severe financial pressures. The Trust suggests that churches should invest in music as a core part of the service they provide to the community. But is it reasonable to expect churches to prioritise supporting music, when there are so many other demands on their funds? On this episode of the NTEB Prophecy News Podcast, the One World Religion we call Chrislam has now being ratified and codified on all levels including the United Nations. Pope Francis gave a lengthy speech at the 7th Congress of World and Traditional Religions, where they voted to make the Human Fraternity document, created by himself and Mohamed bin Zayed, official law and policy. When you combine all this with the Abraham Accords, also created by Mohamed bin Zayed, you have yourself the One World Religion just waiting for its leader to step our of the shadows and take control. This means that the Pretribulation Rapture of the Church is that much closer, as that event is the kick starter for the time of Jacob's trouble and the Day of the Lord time period. Today on the Prophecy News Podcast, we break it all down for you in glorious end times detail. The world religious leaders on Thursday formally adopted the Human Fraternity Document signed by His Eminence the Grand Imam of Al Azhar and Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders, Dr. Ahmed el-Tayyeb, and His Holiness Pope Francis of the Catholic Church, in Abu Dhabi in 2019. This came during the 7th Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions which concluded last week. What does all that mean? It means that the Chrislam started by Vatican evangelist Rick Warren going all the way back to 2003 is now confirmed and complete.

The media thereby elevates this dangerous organization, while sidelining genuine moderates. Why does it do so? Which organizations should it turn to?

All Things Considered

Half-way through advent Jonathan Thomas and guests discuss the concept of 'Waiting'. Today we buy goods at the click of a button, we watch television on demand, it's hard to remember our professional and personal lives before the advent of smartphones. But is there more value in something you've patiently waited for? And what about the nature of waiting itself - are there ways in which we can find peace and even fulfilment in the experience? Waiting is a key concept in many faith traditions and to discuss the subject we hear from Teresa White, a Catholic sister in the Faithful Companions of Jesus based in Poplar, London. She writes about waiting in faith and has recently published ‘Hope and the Nearness of God.' Vishpavani lives in Cardiff, he's a Buddhist and is the Director of Mindfulness in Action. Amanda Morris is a lecturer at the University of Cardiff and a Community Liaison Officer at Muslim Council of Britain. She also supports those converting to Islam at her local mosque. Tanya Marlow is a Christian, she lives with severe M.E. and campaigns for others with chronic illness and disability. She's written a book, ‘Those Who Wait,' about the spiritual value that can be found in longing.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson put some of the country's next steps out of lockdown on hold Friday with just a few hours' notice, saying the number of new coronavirus cases was on the rise for the first time since May.The government's top medical adviser warned that it was impossible to fully reopen society without the virus running out of control.Johnson said statistics showed that the prevalence of COVID-19 in the community is likely increasing, with an estimated 4,900 new infections every day, up from 2,000 a day at the end of June. Britain has Europe's highest confirmed death toll in the pandemic, more than 46,000, behind only the United States and Brazil."We just can't afford to ignore this evidence," Johnson said at a news conference. "With those numbers creeping up, our assessment is that we should now squeeze (the) brake pedal in order to keep the virus under control."Johnson called off plans to allow venues, including casinos, bowling alleys and skating rinks, to open beginning Saturday. The return of wedding receptions was also delayed, along with plans to allow some fans back into sports stadiums and limited audiences into theaters. He said the measures will be reviewed after two weeks. The prime minister said a rule requiring face coverings to be worn in shops and on public transit will be extended to museums, galleries, cinemas and places of worship beginning on Aug. 8.One change that was not put on hold: Beginning Saturday, U.K. businesses can ask employees to return to workplaces as long as they have been made "COVID secure."Scientists advising the government say they are no longer confident that the R figure, which measures how many people each infected person passes the disease to, is below 1 in England. A number above 1 means the virus will spread exponentially.England's Chief Medical Officer, Chris Whitty, said the country had reached "the outer edge" of its ability to return to normal without risking a new wave of the disease."We have to be realistic about this," he said at the news conference. "The idea that we can open up everything and keep the virus under control is clearly wrong."If we do pull back, then we should be able to hold the line."Britain imposed a nationwide lockdown in March — closing schools and businesses and barring all but essential travel — and has been lifting it in stages since June.Countries across Europe that were hit hard by the pandemic in the spring, including Spain, are seeing rising infection rates after lifting lockdowns. Johnson said Britain was not immune from the resurgence."We must keep our discipline,. We must be focused and we cannot be complacent," he said.On Thursday, the government re-imposed restrictions on social life across a swath of northern England because of a surge in cases, barring households from visiting one another.Under the new restrictions, people from different households in Greater Manchester, England's second largest metropolitan area, have been asked not to meet indoors. The order also applies to the surrounding areas of Lancashire and West Yorkshire counties, affecting more than 4 million people in all.Health Secretary Matt Hancock said while it's not the "sort of decision that anybody would want to take,'' the government had no choice because data showed the coronavirus was being spread primarily between households.Opposition politicians supported the move but criticized the government for announcing the restrictions in a tweet from Hancock late Thursday, just two hours before they took effect at midnight.Labour Party business spokeswoman Lucy Powell said the "bolt out of the blue" approach was "not the way to build confidence and to take people with you and maximize compliance with these steps."The affected region has a large Muslim population, and the restrictions coincide with the Eid al-Adha holiday, where many people would normally gather in each other's homes. The Muslim Council of Britain's secretary general,...

The boss of Ryanair has been criticised for saying that airport security checks should focus on Muslim men who are travelling alone, because they pose the biggest terror threat. The Muslim Council of Britain said Michael O'Leary's comments were "racist and discriminatory". Profiling is the practice of categorising people and predicting their behaviour on the basis of particular characteristics. We're profiled all the time by businesses and insurance companies with the help of computer algorithms. That same technology has been piloted by police and will now be used to identify low-level offenders who are deemed likely to go on to commit "high-harm" crimes, perhaps involving knives and guns. Is it right to target specific groups on the theory that they are statistically more likely to commit certain crimes? Civil liberty watchdogs argue that such ‘pre-crime’ profiling not only violates everyone’s civil rights, but fosters alienation and hostility in marginalised communities. Supporters of ‘data analytics’ believe that, on the contrary, it can eliminate all bias and human error from these judgments. There’s a wider debate about the balance between public safety and trust. Should we worry that these preventative measures are eroding our goodwill towards authority and each other? There are proposals to introduce airport-style security checks in ever more areas of our lives, from concert halls to places of worship. Security campaigners say it’s a necessary step towards making us all that little bit safer. Libertarians call it an over-reaction to a statistically-negligible threat. It is, they say, allowing the criminals to dictate how we live our lives. With Nick Aldworth, Tom Chivers, Dr Adam Elliott-Cooper and Tom McNeil. Producer: Dan Tierney.
