My friend Oliver Black (RM, UVU student, grew up in Utah County) joins us to share his story with gender dysphoria and how we can help trans/non-binary Latter-day Saints feel more welcome. Oliver delayed his transition so he could serve a mission (Montana—great experience—wanted to serve to help others), but has now been fully transitioned for over three years. He talks about the positive experiences in his mission and the role of spiritual promptings when coming out while in the field. Oliver then talks about the love/support he's received from his parents and local wards—and the spiritual peace he feels. He also discusses the difficult road transgender Latter-day Saints walk and what we can do to better support them. In this regard, Oliver has written “7 Ways Local Church Leaders Can Make Church Safe for Transgender Members” (link in show notes). This labor of love suggests ways (given the new handbook changes in Aug 2024) to help transgender members feel more safe, accepted, loved, and needed. He answers tender questions I felt impressed to ask him, giving answers that were deeply insightful and moving. Thank you, Oliver, for being on the podcast and helping us better understand that our Heavenly Parents' love all Their children. You are a good man with immense emotional/spiritual/intellectual maturity—gifts that you are using to help us create Zion and bless others. Honored to have you on the podcast. Brian Thompson chats with Elle Moxley, the executive director of the Marsha P. Johnson Institute. The institute seeks to better the lives of Black transgender people through organizing, advocacy, and community. Elle founded the nonprofit institute in response to the murders of transgender women of color. On the episode, Elle shares how the Marsha P. Johnson Institute resulted from her vision for her own life and the wider world. She also discusses the racial tensions following the murder of George Floyd and how she combats exhaustion by pursuing joy daily. Episode Highlights Mission-driven businesses support the collective. Elle defines a mission-driven business as one with an intention of more than just making money as well as a company that supports a collective rather than just an individual. “It is one that is driven towards supporting people with the same rigor and regard as its enterprise endeavors,” Elle said. “Mission-driven businesses really account for the full experience that people are having.” At the Marsha P. Johnson Institute, that mission is to illuminate the root cause of violence against transgender women of color, especially Black transgender women. The mission strongly aligns with Elle's personal values. “I really wanted to do my part, not only as a Black trans woman, but as a Black person in the world to interpret the reasons why murder takes place in communities that are already so intensely interrogated,” she said. Use your vision to guide your business. Like many entrepreneurs on the podcast, Elle didn't set out to start a company, nor did she know whether she had the skills and leadership qualities for her current role. But Elle did have a big vision for her life and the world -- a vision that others didn't always share. Founding the Marsha P. Johnson Institute and her other ventures helped Elle realize that vision. It also helped her to become the best version of herself that she could be. “The only way I could do that was to start my own businesses and to actually be the person behind the vehicle in which my dreams were presented to the world,” Elle said. Combat exhaustion by cultivating joy. Elle's work can be emotionally exhausting, especially as murderers continue to target Black transgender women and some people attempt to minimize the impact of her work. To keep motivated, Elle looks for joy, which she defines as the opposite of constant frustration and fear. “The joy is something that I never really get exhausted from,” she said. “That's the real work I aspire to do daily: How can I create more joy for myself and the people that I love?” Resources + Links Marsha P. There are activists and then there is Munroe Bergdorf, who joins me for the second episode of season two! With over half a million followers on Instagram alone, Munroe has become one of today's most powerful voices, continuously standing up for marginalised people, diversity, feminism, the queer community and transgender visibility. So it’s no wonder that she's a UN Women UK Changemaker, that Time Magazine called her a Next Generation Leader on their cover last year, and British Vogue named her as one of the 25 most powerful women in Britain.Munroe is one of my favourite people to talk to, as she’s beyond open and always promotes new ways of thinking, and this conversation shows just that. We talk about how we both came out at 14 years old, and how lockdown reminded us both of the isolation we experienced as a teenager. We talk about filters and photoshopping, the price of being a prominent Black Transgender activist on social media, labels, and our mutual appreciation for the icon that is Martine McCutcheon! This episode truly has it all so I hope you take away just as much from this chat as I did. And if you are feeling alone or isolated (I’ve been there!) reach out and talk, I promise it will help. It's Black History Month, and we're delivering you a special episode from Edinboro University's Black History Month programming. Although the Civil Rights Movement resulted in monumental legal changes for a country just 100 years removed from slavery, African Americans continue to experience bias, discrimination and prejudice at all levels of society. LGBTQ African Americans often live at the intersection of racism. In 2020, there was an unprecedented number of murders of trans or gender non-conforming people - the majority of which were black transgender women. This presentation will explore the intersection of gender and race and the implications for the social justice movement. This chat features Dena Stanley (CEO & founder TransYOUniting), Dr. Will Koehler and Dalen Hooks (Central Outreach Advocacy) and Dr. Adrienne Dixon (Edinboro Counseling Department).
