This week, we're looking into reporting on racism in New Jersey's gun permitting process. That's why we're talking to Aymann Ismail of Slate Magazine, who both experienced issues with his own gun application and interviewed many other minorities in the same situation. He said a Newark permitting official had withdrawn his first gun purchase permit application against his will over an old trespassing misdemeanor that shouldn't have disqualified him. It wasn't until later that he found he wasn't alone in having trouble getting a license. One Ismail began talking to other minority gun owners in New Jersey he found out many of them had issues with the system. Whether it was long delays or outright denials for improper reasons, he said it was a recurring problem. Then he talked to an activist tracking the disparity between applicants who found there was a ten-to-one denial rate for black New Jersians compared to white ones, and that was for applicants without disqualifying records. Ismail also discussed how he personally went from growing up afraid of guns in Newark to taking range trips with his brother to finally buying a Sig Sauer pistol. He talked about why he often feels uncomfortable and out of place in gun spaces as an arab muslim. But he aslo explained why he decided to buy a gun anyway, and where he thinks he'll go from here as a new gun owner.Special Guest: Aymann Ismail.

00:00 All right, getting back to something we started to talk about a few minutes ago, it is imperative that Ken Paxton win this race in Texas. John Cornyn spent almost $100 million against Ken Paxton and Wesley Hunt. He beat Ken Paxton by 1.7 percentage points. He spent over 600 00:28 and $80 something dollars a vote. Ken Paxton spent about $5 million. 00:38 and got that close. So if everybody that voted for Wesley Hunt, who's out of the race now, votes and gets behind Ken Paxton, he's going to be the next senator from Texas. But Cornyn is just the wrong guy. But everybody's pushing back on this. And I'm pretty sure some names in the Senate that you're probably familiar with are also those that are doing it, that are probably secretly trying to get in Trump's ear saying, Mr. President, 01:08 y'all need to endorse John Cornyn. Well, we're being told that, oh, and we always get told this, you don't understand. You don't understand how Washington works. We need somebody with John Cornyn's experience in there to get things done. Things like what? 01:36 Tell me what John Cornyn has been able to do in the Senate under President Trump. Nothing. Absolutely nothing. 01:46 Now, we might not know how things get done in Washington, but we certainly know how things don't get done. 01:55 how things don't work for the American taxpayer with the Republicans that we've been electing for the past 40 years. 02:06 We have seen the results of a broken political system filled with all of these lifelong 02:14 politicians who line their pockets while destroying America. Under these people, American taxpayers have been forced to fund every single scam, every war, and the importation of tens of millions of third world individuals who take our jobs, houses, commit vast amounts of crime, and they kill us. But the swamp, they want you to stick with the proven losers. 02:41 like Cornyn and everybody in the current Republican leadership. Of course they do because the system only works for them. It doesn't work for us. 02:55 Now we're being told... 02:59 that the crick is what they're calling him, crick, the chief rhino in charge in Washington, Senate Majority Leader John Thune doesn't like what's happening in the recent Texas Senate primary. His good friend and equally corrupt rhino, John Cornyn, is going to get his rear end beaten by Ken Paxton in the runoff. 03:23 And this is after the Republicans spent money on Cornyn's reelection campaign. The Republicans funded $70 million 03:37 of that money that Cornyn was able to raise. 70 millions, was like the GOP did that. And they'll spend millions more trying to keep him in office during the runoff. So if we got rid of John Cornyn, 03:55 That would be another rhino out of Congress. Imagine that. The one thing that they don't want in Washington, and I don't care what party you're in, the one thing they really don't want is the voters themselves choosing their representatives. They can't allow that. 04:15 No, no, John Cornyn has to win. And swamp dwellers, the Republicans, will do everything possible, no matter how despicable, to achieve that. They will even resort to extortion. Who would have ever thought that the political party that MAGA supports would resort to bribery and pass a law that prohibits illegal aliens from voting Democrats in the American election? And that's exactly what John Thune did. 04:42 That's exactly what John Thune did. The Save America Act would effectively put the Democrat Party out of business. They would be gone. Democrats rely on winning elections by theft, illegal alien votes. They vote for the Democrats in person with stolen mail-in ballots. And remember, you just heard Chuck Schumer say they want to do away with mail-in ballots. You're damn right we do. Absolutely. Like many private companies, Nike has implemented diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives in its workplace. The Trump Administration has long been a vocal critic of such policies. The City of Asheville has to pay for discriminating against white people

Local government groups across Pennsylvania are celebrating a state Supreme Court ruling that makes it easier for agencies to change their meeting agendas on the fly. Some transparency advocates however are sounding the alarm. Governor Josh Shapiro has joined 20 other states in another lawsuit against the Trump Administration. The latest fight centers on anti-homelessness funding. Discriminating against someone based on their hair texture and style will soon be illegal in Pennsylvania. Gov. Shapiro says the CROWN Act sends a message that Pennsylvanians deserve to be judged on their character and qualifications — not their appearance. Recently unsealed autopsy and toxicology reports show that the 2003 death of a federal prosecutor in Lancaster County was a homicide. Records obtained by our partners at LNP Lancaster Online show that 38-year old Jonathan Luna, an assistant U-S attorney in Baltimore, died from freshwater drowning and multiple stab wounds to the neck. Cumberland County Commissioners have given preliminary approval to a $290 million budget for 2026. PennDOT is proposing using part of a nature preserve as part of its on-going efforts to upgrade Route 30. A volunteer fire company in York County is closing at the end of the year. Three 10-foot Fraser fir trees from a Schuylkill County Christmas tree farm are gracing the official residence of Vice President JD Vance this holiday season. The U.S. Justice Department has filed a lawsuit against Uber, accusing the ride-hailing company of violating federal law by discriminating against people with physical disabilities. In particular, the Department of Justice's (DOJ) civil rights division claims that the company and its drivers “routinely refuse to serve individuals with disabilities, including individuals who travel with service animals or who use stowable wheelchairs.” Also, the FTC announced on Thursday that it is launching an inquiry into seven tech companies that make AI chatbot companion products for minors: Alphabet, CharacterAI, Instagram, Meta, OpenAI, Snap, and xAI. This is: Discriminating Behaviorally Identical Classifiers: a model problem for applying interpretability to scalable oversight, published by Sam Marks on April 18, 2024 on The AI Alignment Forum. In a new preprint, Sparse Feature Circuits: Discovering and Editing Interpretable Causal Graphs in Language Models, my coauthors and I introduce a technique, Sparse Human-Interpretable Feature Trimming (SHIFT), which I think is the strongest proof-of-concept yet for applying AI interpretability to existential risk reduction.[1] In this post, I will explain how SHIFT fits into a broader agenda for what I call cognition-based oversight. In brief, cognition-based oversight aims to evaluate models according to whether they're performing intended cognition, instead of whether they have intended input/output behavior. In the rest of this post I will: Articulate a class of approaches to scalable oversight I call cognition-based oversight. Narrow in on a model problem in cognition-based oversight called Discriminating Behaviorally Identical Classifiers (DBIC). DBIC is formulated to be a concrete problem which I think captures most of the technical difficulty in cognition-based oversight. Explain SHIFT, the technique we introduce for DBIC. Discuss challenges and future directions, including concrete recommendations for two ways to make progress on DBIC. Overall, I think that making progress on DBIC is tractable with current interpretability techniques, and I'd be excited to see more work on it. Cognition-based oversight In this section, I describe a class of approaches to scalable oversight I call cognition-based oversight. First, I review a simplified formulation of scalable oversight: discriminating good vs. bad models. Then I impose a pessimistic assumption - that the good and bad models cannot be discriminated behaviorally - and propose cognition-based oversight as a potential remedy. Discriminating models: a simplification of scalable oversight In an ideal world, we could argue that AI systems will be safe by default as follows: We train AI systems to receive high scores according to some scoring function. The models that get the highest scores are all good models that robustly behave as desired. Therefore, we have strong a priori reason to expect our training processes to result in good models. Sadly, in the real world, the "scoring functions" we actually use tend to be shaped like "human evaluator approval." And "human evaluator approval" does not enjoy the property that "the models which humans evaluate most positively all robustly behave as desired." Two salient counterexamples:[2] Sycophantic reward hackers take actions that look good to the overseer, even when this conflicts with doing what the overseer actually wants. For example, suppose we deploy an AI smart vault to keep a diamond safe, as judged by whether the diamond continues to appear on the vault camera; instead of trying to prevent diamond theft, a sycophantic reward hacker might instead cover diamond theft up by tampering with the vault camera. Situationally-aware schemers behave well only when they think bad behavior would be caught. For example, a scheming code generation model might write vulnerability-free code only when it expects the code to be closely audited, but otherwise insert subtle backdoors. The models in these examples score highly according to human evaluator approval, so we can't use the argument above that they are unlikely to arise from training. We instead need to rely on arguments that these models are unlikely to arise despite scoring at least as well as good models. So far, I think these arguments are far from airtight, and I feel nervous about relying on them. Said differently, a core problem in technical AI safety is that it can be generally hard to discriminate good models that robustly do stuf...
