Picture this. You're sitting in the neuropsych's office after you just got your kid's diagnosis. You're relieved to have some information on how to help them but have no clue how to explain their neurodivergence to them. Do you talk about the science? Do you wait until they are a certain age where they might understand more about their brains? Or maybe you think about waiting for them to start asking the questions. If you can relate, you're not alone in wondering what the best way to have this conversation is. And the reality is, the how and when does matter. So for today's show, I'm bringing on Dr. Liz Angoff, a Licensed Educational Psychologist who specializes in helping families reframe assessments and diagnoses into empowering narratives that celebrate a child's unique brain. Liz has spent years working with children and families to make learning differences easier to understand. She's the author of the Brain Building Books, a resource designed to help kids see their neurodivergence as a strength rather than a limitation. In our conversation, Liz shares why early and open discussions about neurodiversity are so important, how parents can guide their children through assessments in a way that fosters trust, and why shifting from a deficit-based model to a discovery-based approach can be transformative for the whole family. We also explore how different kids process this information in their own ways—some may embrace it, while others, especially teenagers, might resist labels altogether. She also provides thoughtful strategies to meet kids where they are and help them feel seen and supported.  If you've ever struggled with how to talk to your child about their neurodivergence, this episode is full of practical insights and reassurance.   About Dr. Liz Angoff Liz Angoff, Ph.D., is a Licensed Educational Psychologist with a Diplomate in School Neuropsychology, providing assessment and consultation services to children and their families in the Bay Area, CA. It's Jana Parker here, and I have a special episode of the Empower LEP podcast for you today! Let's talk about how to leverage your LEP to build the career and business you want - maybe the one you have been dreaming about but aren't sure how to move forward. I've mentioned this before, but it's important to understand that being an LEP doesn't mean you have to be an entrepreneur. There are so many fulfilling ways to use your LEP skills without owning a business. The business aspect is a whole different skill set that you'll constantly be learning and adapting to and that can feel overwhelming at first. The hard truth - it can even take you away from the heart of being a psychologist at times if you don't have the proper support and resources. That being said, owning a private practice has been rewarding and inspiring for me, and I know some of you are considering that path for yourselves. In this bonus episode, I share how our LEP Launchpad Foundations program can help you figure out what that path looks like for you.If you decide that running a business isn't for you, that's completely okay! The program can help you make that decision, too. A common struggle for parents and families is how to help their children understand their developmental and learning differences. For some parents, they don't want to have the conversation at all. But today's guest not only explains why it is important for a child to understand their brain, but the language we can use to start shifting a negative narrative. Dr. Liz Angoff is an Educational Psychologist who provides assessment and consultation services to children and their families. She is also the author of the Brain Building Books, tools for engaging children in understanding their learning and developmental differences as part of the assessment process. In our conversation today, Dr. Angoff shares the language and strategies she uses with the children and adolescents she works with to help them understand their strengths and struggles with the perfect balance to normalize and validate it all.   Show Notes: [2:22] - Kids know that they are different in some way and it shouldn't be kept a secret from them. [3:38] - When kids don't have the understanding of the way their brains work, they create their own narrative, which is often negative. [4:52] - When we can be realistic and transparent with kids, they can shift this narrative. [6:17] - The vast majority of the kids that Dr. Angoff works with express relief when they learn about their differences. [7:10] - Striking the balance means acknowledging both strengths and areas of struggle. [8:19] - Dr. Angoff shares a metaphor that helps kids understand how their brains work. [10:43] - This language normalizes always having something to work on and the process of learning new things. [12:53] - Kids need to understand that all adults also have ongoing construction projects as we are all always learning. [14:16] - Assessment should be approached from a place of curiosity. [16:06] - Many parents choose not to share a diagnosis with their child. The concerns are understandable. [17:29] - When we name what's going on, we are giving kids a container for all these feelings and experiences. It also gives you community. [19:31] - Dr. Angoff shares some language and verbiage to use that becomes empowering and validating. [21:21] - When we understand how kids think about their experience, we can work on shifting their narrative. [24:23] - Dr. Angoff shares an example of how to address a struggle and area of frustration with a child. [27:28] - When kids understand why they are receiving an intervention, they are more invested. [29:58] - Dr. Angoff shares the experience of a child who became curious about her own disability. [32:27] - These are ongoing conversations and not a one time thing. [34:12] - Every child is different, but Dr. Angoff offers resources on how to talk to your children about their differences.   About Our Guest: Liz Angoff, Ph.D., is a Licensed Educational Psychologist with a Diplomate in School Neuropsychology, providing assessment and consultation services to children and their families in the Bay Area, CA. Lots of folks are seeking assessments to help the family understand the way their child learns and to maximize how rewarding schooling is. We often think more about how to convey your child's needs to professionals at school, but talking to children about it can go overlooked. Children always have a sense that something is different for them, and if we don't talk to them they start to develop their own narratives about what's going on. Those narratives are often very negative and can be harmful following them into adulthood. Beginning the conversation early with your child will help them with their self esteem and identity. This week, DR. Laura Anderson invites Dr. Liz Angoff for a conversation on understanding learning profiles and helping children understand how their brains work.Liz Angoff, Ph.D., is a Licensed Educational Psychologist with a Diplomate in School Neuropsychology, providing assessment and consultation services to children and their families in the Bay Area, CA. Reading Specialists do Exist in Public School!

There is often a misconception in public education that if a student has problems reading, special education services may be in order. After working in special education for 15 years, I can tell you that if a student can be support in general education, that is ideal. Some people think that reading specialists only exist in special education. The reality is that reading specialists actually support GENERAL EDUCATION, and special educators are the ones who support reading interventions once students are in special education. Reading specialists typically have significantly more training in teaching reading than special educators do. If your school district has reading specialists, and your child is struggling with reading, you are in luck!! I interviewed Susan Blanco, reading specialist at Encinal School in Menlo Park, CA, because I was giving a workshop on Dyslexia to school psychologists and I wanted some insight and perspective from a reading specialist. Susan is a Reading Recovery teacher and is also a trainer of Reading Recovery specialists. Susan shared so much valuable information about reading in this interview that I decided I should make the entire thing available for others to see and hear. Enjoy! In this interview I talk with Virginie Goldstein, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and founder of Tech Connect Reset.  Virginie's passion is coaching parents to improve communication with their teens and promote healthy screen use.  In a world where screens are the norm, how do we teach our kids to use screens in a responsible way rather than ban them from using them for fear they will become addicted?    Virginie has developed a protocol to support families through developing healthy relationships with screens, starting with an awareness of their own screen use and improving communication skills with their teens.  Her goal is to support families in groups moving forward, and expanding her protocol to other therapist and throughout California, for starters.   Virginie's website is www.techconnectreset.com and her email is virginie@techconnectreset.com.     I'm Jana Parker, a Licensed Educational Psychologist in Campbell, CA.
