This podcast is a replay of our recent panel discussion on LGBTQ+ caregiver concerns, hosted by Sue Evans of Kensington Senior Living and AlzAuthors. Authors Laura Davis, Christopher MacLellan, Vincent Zappacosta, and Douglass Christensen joined Sue, Christy and I as we delved into the complexities of caregiving within the LGBTQ+ community. They shared personal stories, insightful advice, and meaningful discussions about their caregiving journeys, offering knowledge and support to others currently caring for a loved one. Empathy emerged as a recurring theme during the discussion. The group explored how understanding and compassion are foundational to a positive caregiving experience, especially in the face of stigmas surrounding dementia and LGBTQ+ identities. The panelists underscored the critical importance of legal documents such as power of attorney and healthcare proxies. These tools grant caregivers the authority needed to make vital decisions during emergencies. The LGBTQ+ community, in particular, benefits from these preparations to navigate potential biases and ensure their loved ones' wishes are honored. They emphasized that preparing documents and passwords in advance can prevent needless complications, resonating with caregivers who might find themselves thrust into unexpected situations. The episode illuminated unique challenges faced by LGBTQ+ caregivers. Issues such as isolation and the need to select healthcare providers comfortable with their orientation were discussed candidly. Positive experiences in inclusive areas like California and New York City contrasted with occasional instances of discrimination, as shared by Vincent and Douglas when they faced resistance in having Douglass recognized as family. Legal tools and personal anecdotes underscored the power of preparedness in overcoming personal bigotry and ensuring smooth caregiving and end-of-life processes. The insights from this episode of the AlzAuthors podcast offer hope and guidance for caregivers, especially those navigating the additional layers of complexity tied to LGBTQ+ identities. There's a lightbulb that's been burning for a whopping 120 years straight, like, non-stop! They call it the "Eternal Light" because, seriously, it just won't quit. Started shining back in 1901 in a firehouse in California and, man, it's still going strong. Folks are scratching their heads, wondering how on earth it's managed to keep the party going for so darn long. It's like the Energizer Bunny of lightbulbs—just keeps on glowing! What is its secret: could it be the material that makes it never-ending? #brightside Credit: Xenon short arc: Atlant, CC BY 2.5 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/..., https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fi... Writing a memoir is so much more than writing down memories–it's shedding layers of stories we've told ourselves for years, seeing ourselves in unflattering lights, opening up to compassion, and exposing our underbelly. And it's powerful medicine. In this episode, we talk with Laura Davis about the story behind her memoir, The Burning Light of Two Stars: A Mother-Daughter Story. In her blunt, brave way, Davis tells the complicated story of how deep wounds exposed an even deeper love–and what it took to get to that place.Laura Davis is also the author of The Courage to Heal, and four other groundbreaking books. In addition to writing books that inspire, the work of Laura's heart is to teach. For more than twenty years, she's helped people find their voices, tell their stories, and hone their craft. Laura has been published in Publisher's Weekly, Writer's Digest, CrimeReads, Brevity, and The New York Times, featured in Los Angeles Review of Books, and on QWERTY, Write-Minded, The Only One in the Room, and dozens of other podcasts. She's a featured speaker for The National Association of Memoir Writers and a popular craft teacher at The San Miguel Writer's Conference. Laura is teaching a special series of online summer pop-up classes this summer and will be leading her signature Writing as a Pathway Through Grief retreat in August. Next spring, she'll be taking a group to Bali for an in-depth dive into Balinese spirituality and healing practices. In 1988 Laura Davis coauthored The Courage to Heal, a global phenomenon. It is the go-to, permission giving, truth telling, and healing guide for victims of sexual abuse.  Her most recent book, The Burning Light of Two stars: A Mother Daughter Story is a prequel and a sequel to The Courage to Heal. It chronicles the estrangement, reconciliation and care-giving relationship between Laura and her mother. And it is about so much more.   The Burning Light of Two Stars is plot twist after plot twist, as Laura and her mother evolve, change, stay the same, and rediscover each other over and over. It's a story of forgiveness, accountability, letting go and holding on.  We couldn't put it down.  Laura Davis is a deep thinking, soul touching writer and person. She chronicles the ongoingness of life beyond trauma. Her understanding and wonderment about herself and others touched and inspired us. Please Listen. “The price I paid to keep my mother out, at first with withdrawal, later with an armed fortress, and finally, with the polite rules of détente, was love. Laura Davis came to fame and acclaim in the late 1980s after the publication of her book: “The Courage to Heal: A Guide for Women Survivors of Child Sexual Abuse” in which she shared her own experience of sexual abuse by her grandfather. An ordeal which left her feeling broken, damaged and incapable of loving & freely receiving love as well. But she dared to heal her pain and to ‘return to her body', from which she had long dissociated as a result of the trauma she lived through. In our conversation we discuss her healing journey, what adversity taught her and what type of forgiveness is essential in cases of abuse. We also discuss her relationship with her mother, who long refused to believe Laura's truth and with whom the decision to go public with her grandfather's incest with the publication of “The Courage to Heal”  further deepened their estrangement. This is the subject of Laura's beautiful and captivating memoir “The Burning Light of Two Stars: A Mother-Daughter Story” and I think in this podcast and far beyond, Laura has many words of wisdom to share about reconciling relationships, how to overcome adversity and how to live a joyful and happy life. You can connect with myself and Laura on the links below: Shannon's instagramShannon's websiteShannon's tiktokLaura's website Laura's facebook Laura's instagram Music by: Flood (Instrumental) by RYYZN https://soundcloud.com/ryyznCreative Commons — Attribution 3.0 Unported — CC BY 3.0

Episode #37: More than one in six Americans are currently providing care to someone age 50 or older. Most of these caregivers are women, and this trend is expected to persist as one of the largest demographic groups–baby boomers–continue to age. Thus, many of us will find ourselves in the role of caregiver for an older adult. Under any conditions, caregiving for an aging and dying parent can be a challenging task and difficult to balance with raising children and meeting work and other family commitments. Caregiving is made ever more difficult when relationships are conflicted. Yet the majority of those who have helped care for an aging parent ultimately report it as rewarding and meaningful. In this episode we're joined by award-winning author, Laura Davis, who has a new memoir, “The Burning Light of Two Stars,” about reconciling her strained relationship with her mother as she cares for her through her dementia and death. We are also joined by Chief Medical Officer at Hospice of Santa Cruz County and palliative care specialist, Dr. Karl Segnitz, who discusses ways families can navigate these end-of-life challenges and find needed support. “We can be stronger in the broken places, and I would have preferred to have not been broken at all.” Author Laura Davis is my guest this week to discuss her newly released book and first memoir, “The Burning Light of Two Stars: A Mother-Daughter Story.” The depths of realness and rawness expressed in her writing is something to behold, and also explains why it took ten years for her to complete. Though many of us have contentious relationships with our mothers, Laura's story is on another plane. Not only was she faced with her own trauma and the betrayal of her mother's denial, judgment, and perceived rejection over many years, but she also found herself as the primary caregiver for her mother's end of life, witnessing her spiral into dementia. In this conversation, we are going to speak openly and honestly about Laura's experience, elements she has shared in her book, and the pieces and parts of humanity that are often hidden from view. Her story is deeply moving and necessary to bring to light. Purchase “The Burning Light of Two Stars” wherever books are sold. "The Burning Light of Two Stars: A Mother-Daughter Story" was such a beautiful book, and its author Laura Davis was a total delight to interview. Having had my own childhood trauma and troubled parental relationships, this book was incredibly helpful in helping to illuminate the deeper truths that lie under the surface of my personal struggle. I found peace and compassion in ways that surprised me. Can you caretake a parent who betrayed you in the past? Is it possible to become open-hearted when life has taught you it's safer to stay protected and closed? How do we reconcile with someone we are estranged from when we disagree about some basic facts/realities in life? What does the healing process from trauma look like over the course of a lifetime? What does it mean to write about people in your life -- what are the ethical issues and concerns? This riveting memoir by Laura Davis, also the author of The Courage to Heal, examines the endurance of mother-daughter love, how memory protects and betrays us, and the determination it takes to fulfill a promise when ghosts from the past come knocking. When she published The Courage to Heal in 1988, Laura Davis helped more than a million women work through the trauma of childhood sexual abuse. But her decision to go public with her grandfather's incest deepened an already painful estrangement with her mother, Temme. Over the next twenty years, from a safe distance of 3,000 miles, Laura and Temme reconciled their volatile relationship and believed that their difficult past was behind them. But when Temme moved across the country to entrust her daughter with the rest of her life, she brought a faltering mind, a fierce need for independence, and the seeds of a second war between them. As the stresses of caregiving rekindled Laura's rage over past betrayals, they threatened her intention to finally love her mother “without reservation.” Did she learn what it means to be truly open-hearted before it was too late? What essential elements make reconciliation possible? Impossible? What are the secrets of reconciling with someone you're estranged from – someone you were deeply hurt or injured by or someone who's simply different from you? How can family members stay in a relationship when they can't agree on critical elements of their collective past? What does it mean to “agree to disagree?” Once you've said, “I'll never forgive you,” what does it take to forgive? Is it really possible to come to peace with the things about our family members that we can't understand, change or even tolerate? What are the three most important things to remember when attempting to make peace with an estranged family member? After you say, “me too,” after you stand up and break the silence, then what happens? Is it possible to ever truly transcend the long-term effects of abuse? How does the healing process evolve and change over the course of a lifetime? What does it mean to keep growing decades after the initial healing from trauma took place? Can a heart that is walled off for good reason, find ways to open again? When, if ever, is it possible to reconcile with those who have betrayed us in the past? Laura Davis is the author of seven books, including The Courage to Heal, Becoming the Parent You Want to Be, and I Thought We‘d Never Speak Again. Her groundbreaking books have been translated into 11 languages and sold two million copies. In addition to writing books that inspire and change people's lives, the work of Laura's heart is to teach. Laura Davis, celebrated author and advocate, joins And Then Everything Changed for episode 100! When Laura's groundbreaking first book, The Courage to Heal was released decades ago it was the first of its kind to document hundreds of women's stories of sexual abuse. In it, Laura shared her own story of being sexually abused by her grandfather, showed women it was possible to heal from this trauma, and called out the patriarchy. As she helped hundreds of thousands of women and her star rose, a rupture began in her own family. Her mother refused to believe Laura about the abuse she'd suffered, and when Laura came out as lesbian her family rejected her.   Laura relocated across the country and found a supportive community, a loving relationship, became a mother, and wrote and published many more books. Then, toward the end of her mother's life, she told Laura she was moving to live near her and Laura faced the prospect of caring for and being in relationship again with her mother who had hurt her so many years before. In this episode Laura shares what it was like to write her new memoir, The Burning Light of Two Stars: A Mother-Daughter Story about how she reconciled with the mother who betrayed her and came to care for her in her final days.   Also in this episode: Laura's tips for writing about traumatic experiences, where the boundaries are when writing about family experiences, and what all memoir writing needs.   Connect with Laura: You can buy The Burning Light of Two Stars wherever books and audiobooks are sold.  You can also read the opening chapters of The Burning Light of Two Stars at: www.lauradavis.net/chapters If you're an aspiring writer or want to use writing as a tool for healing or self-discovery, you can learn about Laura's online writing workshops and in-person domestic and international retreats here: www.lauradavis.net Direct links to buy The Burning Light of Two Stars: Bookshop.org: https://bookshop.org/books/the-burning-light-of-two-stars-a-mother-daughter-story-9781954854161/9781954854161 Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Burning-Light-Two-Stars-Mother-Daughter/dp/1954854218/ Barnes and Noble: https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the-burning-light-of-two-stars-laura-davis/1139198069 Indiebound: https://www.indiebound.org/book/9781954854161 Get Your Signed Copies Through Bookshop Santa Cruz: https://www.bookshopsantacruz.com/burning-light-two-stars-get-it-signed) Want a Discount When You Buy in Bulk for Your Book Club or Organization? “When I wrote The Courage to Heal, if you had asked me who I was at that point in my life, I would've said ‘I'm an incest survivor,' and that would have been it. I didn't have any other identity. I was consumed by it, and it felt like my life had been destroyed by it and that I would never recover. So many decades later, I'm in such a different place that if you asked me, ‘Who are you?', I would say ‘I'm a teacher, I'm an author,  I'm a mother, I'm a grandmother, I'm a swimmer, I'm a hiker,  I'm a friend, I'm a sister.' ‘Incest survivor' wouldn't even be on the list, and it's because that experience, with many other experiences, is in the fabric of the cloth that shaped me, but it's so in the background now.”   Laura Davis is a six-time bestselling author. Her books, including The Courage to Heal and I Thought We'd Never Speak Again have been translated into 11 languages and sold 1.8 million copies. Laura leads writing workshops in the U.S. and internationally that focus on writing as a tool for healing and transformation.    Laura's new memoir, The Burning Light of Two Stars: A Mother-Daughter Story is the riveting story of her embattled relationship with her mother Temme, their determination to love one another, and the dramatic and surprising collision course they ended up on at the end of Temme's life. For the millions of readers of Laura's first book, The Courage to Heal, The Burning Light of Two Stars is both prequel and sequel, revealing in page-turning, intimate detail how Laura reconciled with the mother who betrayed her, and came to care for her in her final days.    You can read the opening chapters here: https://lauradavis.net/the-burning-light-of-two-stars/   SUBSCRIBE to the show to be the first to hear about new episodes! Today I had the pleasure of interviewing Laurie Davis, an Author, Writing Teacher, and Workshop Leader.  She is also the founder of The Writer's Journey.  She has written 7 books and has sold 2 million copies and has had them translated into 11 different languages. To say I was thrilled when one of my favorite authors agreed to allow me to interview her is an understatement. Her most recent book, The Burning Light of Two Stars: A Mother-Daughter Story, is a memoir that touched my heart and has helped me view my story for what it can do to help not only me but those that have lived through the same experiences. This interview really dives deep into Laurie's writing process and the story behind the memoir. We will also talk about surviving sexual abuse, raising children, and inspiring others to heal from childhood traumas .  It was a beautiful interview and I know you are going to enjoy it, just as much as I did. Laura Davis is a six-time bestselling author who leads transformative writing workshops internationally. Her latest book, a memoir, The Burning Light of Two Stars, is about the dramatic twists and turns of mother-daughter love. This episode is part of a Breathing Wind miniseries titled Caregiving Journey, hosted by Breathing Wind founder and host, Sarah Davis. The Caregiving Journey miniseries explores: How stories of other caregivers can help us feel less alone Ambiguous grief and caregiving at end of life The shifting roles of the caregiver How and why to seek self-care Joy in the caregiving journey In this ~41-minute episode, Sarah and Laura talk about: [3:08] Relationships are complicated, which makes grief complicated [3:42] Laura's relationship with her mom [9:10] Reconciliation [10:03] What was going on in Laura's life when her mom decided to move to her city and how she processed that [12:43] Excerpt from Chapter Two, “The Call” [19:41] Laura's reflections on the call [25:11] Caring for someone with dementia [25:30] “One of the things that was so confusing to me about dementia in particular is that it's like tuning into a radio station. And sometimes the signal is clear. And sometimes it isn't.” [26:51] Entering the world of someone with dementia [29:54] What Laura means by explaining she had to wear a “good daughter mask” [30:13] “There always was a buffer, and if it wasn't geographic, then it was just that I wasn't going to really share; I never really felt I could share my intimate life with her -- ever. I didn't feel like it was safe to do that. And yet we managed to have a healed relationship. You know, it had some cracks in it.” [30:25] “As she changed, the dynamic between us changed.” [31:53] How Laura moved her mother to an assisted living facility and her feelings after [35:13] “The fight went out of her. And she acquiesced to being there. And she started to feel like she belonged. And it was actually really sad. I mean, on one hand, she became much easier to manage. For me, because she wasn't the fiery, intense emotional woman she'd always been, she became quite passive and sweet, actually. But I felt like this person isn't really my mother, it was like I was dealing with a different person.”  [36:10] “Anyone who cares for someone with Alzheimer's or [another] dementia is pretty much in a constant state of grief. You're grieving for the person while they're still here. And it's a really sad process.”  [38:04] How caregiving has transformed who Laura is today [39:39] Information on Laura's book release and pre sale campaign To find out more about this episode and subscribe to the newsletter, visit the show notes.
