Alan Hesse creates a unique children’s book series that deals with Climate Change Education. We talk about his current books and future releases and his creation process. We also dive into a really good conversation on conservation and climate change. If you happen to work in a library or school, I think you should take a look at putting these books on your shelves. About Alan Hesse Based in biodiversity-rich Ecuador, Alan wears several hats: he is an author-illustrator, an educator and a conservation biologist. Alan's work is inspired by the majesty and fragility of nature and the need to do everything we can to protect it. Alan combines his artistic creativity with his technical experience and knowledge to create scientifically accurate, educational children's books full of quirky, comic humour and fun action, and usually bearing a message about how everyone can help preserve Nature. Alan's particular focus on using cartoons for education about pressing global environmental issues is well summed up in this interview with the Association for Science Education: https://www.ase.org.uk/news/meeting-millgate-house-authors-alan-hesse-and-polo-polar-bear-explorer. Because he combines non-fiction with fiction, Alan's creative process involves multiple steps that all need careful planning, right from researching the technical content of his books to creating the storyline, the original artwork, characters, and dialogues to designing the final books. Alan is the author of five educational comic books for middle grade children, among which his main ongoing focus is the Captain Polo series about climate change. All five books have received 5-star reviews from Readers Favorite. Alan is also the author of 2 climate change-themed picture books and one Christmas activity book for children within the 6-8 age range. Check it all out as well as Alan's extensive cartoon portfolio on AJH Education Comics and Cartoons: https://alanhesse.com/ https://www.amazon.com/-/e/B00TP497QA

Surviving Mental IllnessIt is not the strongest or the most intelligent who will survive but those who can best manage change.~ Leon C. MegginsonLinda Naomi Baron-Katz spent childhood as a modern orthodox Jew. However, mental illness presented an increasingly challenging set of variables throughout her life. It started with her mother when she was in the fifth grade. Her mother suffered a nervous breakdown with acute depression. This regression gave Linda and her family a tremendous amount of stress. As she was growing up into adulthood, her mother's illness affected her in ways that she feared she too would become a severely depressed person. In that challenging life context, Linda found difficulties making friends, developing positive relationships, and maintaining employment. After she graduated college, she also developed a mental illness and was ultimately diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Her Recovery PlanThrough the years she was faced with challenges that were difficult to overcome but worked hard to achieve recovery. As part of her recovery from mental illness, she became active and volunteered for a variety of mental health organizations. Linda became a member of NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness or formerly called National Alliance for the Mentally Ill) and published articles about her life in New York City Voices, a newspaper for people with mental illness to share their personal recovery stories. Both of these agencies helped fight against stigma and other issues about mental illness. UpdateToday, Linda is happily married, a Certified Peer Specialist under Ohel's Mental Health Crisis Respite Program, and is an author who has published a book titled http://geni.us/katz (Surviving Mental Illness, My Story). Her book won a Silver Medal Award by Readers Favorite for best non-fiction/autobiography and came in First Place and won the Life Journeys Award for best memoir/biography from Readers Views. Through her book, she describes all of her challenges that she dealt with while having a mental illness and how she found her way back towards establishing wellness plan by staying mentally and physically healthy. Her Perspective"I am the author of my own memoir titled Surviving Mental Illness, My Story which gives a brief description at the beginning of defining what mental illness is and background and treatment options of three particular mood and thought disorders. Then it goes on to describe resources and organizations that help promote your recovery. Afterward, I talk about my family's history of mental illness and how I became diagnosed with bipolar disorder and faced my fears of stigma and overcame the challenges in my life to make a successful recovery. My second book is a children's book, titled http://geni.us/ckatz (Peter and Lisa: A Mental Illness Children's Story), which I co-authored with my husband, is about how two people who like each other and face difficulties with their mental illness. It describes how each of them comforted each other and sought treatment and made their way to live happily ever after." The physiology in your body changes when you're taking that time to slow down and be intentional with your breath. Suggested Resources Book: The 5 Love Languages: The Secret To Love That Lasts by Dr. Gary Chapman Book: 5 Simple Questions To Reclaim Your Happiness by Jacqui Letran App: The Spire Breathing App (www.Spire.io) Bullying Story [In my book], I share my stories of being the 'bullier' to other people and I also briefly share how I was bullied in the medical setting. As a teenager I was seeking help, I was scared and rather than having any kind of support or compassion, I was bullied. I was made to feel even worse about myself. Those are two examples of how I bullied others and how other people bullied me. I want to present something that I don't think a lot of us think about as often as we should. That is, we are our biggest bulliers. Everything that I experienced back then was because of me. I was the one who said, 'I'm stupid', to me. I was the one who said, 'Don't do it, you're not good enough'. 'You don't fit in'. 'You are inferior'. I was telling myself all of that and I told myself that so much that I believed it. I would love for people to just pause for a moment and think about how you've been bullying yourself and what you can do to stop that.

Linda Naomi Katz was raised as a modern orthodox Jew, where mental illness became a factor throughout her life. It had started with her mother when she was in the fifth grade. Her mother had suffered a nervous breakdown and was diagnosed with acute depression. This gave Linda and her family a huge amount of stress. As she was growing up into adulthood, her mother's illness affected her in ways that she too would become a depressed person. Linda had difficulties making friends, developing positive relationships, and maintaining employment. After she graduated college, she also suffered from a mental illness and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Through the years she was faced with challenges that were difficult to overcome, but worked hard to achieve recovery. Both of these agencies helped fight against stigma and other issues pertaining to mental illness. Soon after, Linda found employment working for agencies that help others with mental illness reach their goals and dreams. Today, Linda is happily married, an author who has published a book titled Surviving Mental Illness, My Story which won a Silver Medal Award by Readers Favorite for best non-fiction/autobiography and came in First Place and won the Life Journeys Award for best memoir/biography from Readers Views. Through this book she describes all of her challenges that she dealt with while having a mental illness and how she found her way back towards establishing a wellness by staying mentally and physically strong.
