I had an absolute blast playing the Anchor Brewing Silent Disco at the Bottlerock Festival in Napa, CA on May 30th. It was a rare opportunity to play the full range of dance music I most enjoy: funky nuschool house, breakbeat and atmospheric tech house, which I usually play under the alias W.Haze. Big thanks to Robbie Kowal and HushConcerts for having me. - ZM As a member and resident of Space Cowboys, DJ Zach Moore spins events from San Francisco to the Black Rock Desert to New York City and beyond. For this our twenty second episode, we're pleased to welcome label boss at Ground Level Records, Andy McAllister, to The Armory Podcast. Press play. Get Down. Starting off in the music industry as a drummer in his teens, Andy was playing regularly in his native Scotland, when he got interested in electronic dance music and production. After a few years of crude production, he widened his skills to encompass DJing, coming of age just as the Big Beat explosion was hitting down, and began playing regularly in his adopted home of Derby. As the years went on and Big Beat became Nu Skool Breaks, Andy kept his finger on the pulse running nights in and around Derby and regularly getting guest DJs from around the country to play at his ‘Ground Level' nights. At the end of 2006, the steady flow of tracks being given to him by guest DJs gave him an idea, to provide an outlet for this music, and so Ground Level Records was born. Not knowing anything about running a record label, everything was a process of trial and error, the only motto was that no corners where cut, the vinyl records would be cut by the best guys, the remixes by the hottest talent and the artwork accompanying the release would be fresh and innovative, making sure a product came out that oozed quality. This seemed to do the trick, and by January 2008, 10 releases in, Ground Level was nominated as best Breakthrough label at the International Breakbeat Awards, Breakspoll. Now with over 70 releases in the catalogue Ground Level is preparing to celebrate it's 7th Birthday this July. Artists on the label include DJ Hero, Fisso & Spark, Beatsmack and Rebel Sketchy and the label's music has attracted listens and spins from DJs outside of the breaks scene from Laurent Garnier to MJ Cole! The music policy of Ground Level is music with a broken beat and an underground feel, and this manifesto has carved the label a following that far exceeds the niche of breakbeat. Andy hosts the monthly Ground Level Podcast on iTunes, as well as playing at Ground Level nights up and down the country, and has played with many of the big players in the breaks and bass music scenes including Plump DJs, Stanton Warriors, Drumattic Twins, Foamo, Jack Beats and Calvertron. Imagine our luck! This week 2012 Breakspoll-winner, Colombo (aka Alejandro Rojo) is a surprise special guest in The Armory! His latest mixset was just dropped into our inbox by our friends at iBreaks so naturally we'll be doubling up on the podcast this week: breaks at the front end with Colombo and some disco house at the back courtesy of San Francisco's Ma Yeah. Press play. Enjoy. A native of Malaga and formerly one half of BSD (BASS STAR DOS), Colombo wrote his first dance track in 1999 at the tender age of 17. Following stints with Reflex Musik, Starsing Records and Dubplate Records (2003 through 2007), the young Spanish producer joined forces with iBreaks in 2009 and quickly established himself as the label's brightest star. Introducing The Armory, a new weekly podcast from San Francisco DJ, Zach Moore (The RIPEcast, Gough Street Sessions). Featuring an arsenal of world class DJs from San Francisco and beyond, The Armory Podcast reloads each and every Friday with exclusive mixes from the biggest names in breakbeat and house. Syndicated on SoundCloud and MixCloud at the moment, look for The Armory Podcast in iTunes in the coming weeks. In our very first episode 2012 Breakspoll winner, Mafia Kiss (aka Paul Baron), wastes no time kicking down the door and setting The Armory ablaze, but there is a method to his madness. "I was sent the artwork for the Armory Podcast and was told by Zach to think '80's arcade machine', says Mr. Baron. "So that stuck in my head and I wanted the mix to play along with that, hence the deeper, darker mix. I've tried to make it feel like you're completing level after level in a video game with the track selection. Make sure you're looking at the artwork at the end of the mix, too. Trust me. It will make sense!" The Armory will also showcase the talents of renowned illustrator, Jem Panufnik. “My artwork for The Armory takes its cue from those classic back-lit, sci-fi, shoot-em-up, ‘80s-stlye video arcade game signs, which I love", says Panufnik. "When he commissioned me, Zach explained how The Armory was about the old analogy of DJ battle weapons, dancefloor bombs etc, and it seemed a great way to show that when the DJ pulls his trigger/fader finger it's an arsenal of sirens, squeaks, bleeps and ear-splitting analogue booms that does the damage. Really looking forward to the series!” Mafia Kiss, the award-winning bass/breaks producer, has dominated the breaks charts of Juno, Track It Down & Beatport with releases on labels such as Rat Records, LOT49, Sunday Best Recordings, Digital Records, Sub Slayers & has recently signed to Stanton Warriors infamous label Punks. This week, the Space Cowboys welcome London's The Bomb Squad (aka Light-it and Do-one) to The RIPEcast. Enjoy, Boys and Girls!! "2013 has been a big year for The Bomb Squad and June sees our latest release on Diablo Loco Records (Voted Best New Breaks Label at Breakspoll 2012) and this new explosive mix we have put together for the superb San Francisco-based Space Cowboys. Big beats and bangs to come in 2013." - The Bomb Squad After stealing parts from Aphex Twins' dustbin in the early '90s and soldering them together to make a crude squelching machine, The Bomb Squad was formed. Twenty years of parties followed..including a stint in rehab...a lottery win...lost it all again (kaun banega crorepati?)...3rd prize in the canary breeders world championship... a small part on eastenders ...and Alf Lowe and Ozzie Later are back (also known as DJs Light-it and Do-one). The Bomb Squad will be bringing their brand of mayhem and general shenanigans to 2013 with several new tracks... BANG BANG! Check out The Bomb Squad's new EP, On The G String, (including a DJ Hero remix)! http://www.beatport.com/release/on-the-g-string/1101678 For more information on The Bomb Squad visit https://soundcloud.com/the-bomb-squad-music http://www.beatport.com/artist/the-bomb-squad/258899 For bookings: loudboy@eatdrinketc.com
We've been waiting a while for an infusion of fresh sound into the international breaks scene and at long last we have two new, talented artists to be excited about in the world of breakbeat. This week the Space Cowboys are very excited to welcome to The RIPEcast this year's Breakspoll winners for best Breakthrough DJ, Se7en Deadly Breaks (aka Aaron King and Jake McCaffery). Press play and enjoy the ride! Aaron King & Jake McCaffery joined forces back in 2007 to form Se7en Deadly Breaks as they both had a passion for underground music (and an even bigger passion to be the ones behind the decks). Whilst the pair were making their mark in and around Berkshire they also had shows on two of the biggest pirate radio stations in London, PointBlank FM & Flex FM, which caught the attention of some well known names in the scene including Deekline & Wizard, Pure SX, Pyramid, Jigga Flo, Sneaky D, CodeBreaker and Ben & Lex to name a few. Over the last six years, Se7en Deadly Breaks have graced the decks at some of London's biggest clubs while sharing the bill with their idols in the Breakbeat world such as Deekline, Stanton Warriors, Pyramid, Ed Solo, High Rankin, Hostage & Jurrasik to name a few. They recently headlined the 2012 Hot Cakes Break Beach Festival in Spain and released their first single, "Superman", on Deekline's BOOTY BREAKS label in November 2012 (which went all the way to the top of Beatport's TOP 100 BREAKS CHART). And earlier this year, Se7en Deadly Breaks were named "Best Breakthrough DJ' at the 12th International Breakbeat Awards! This week the Space Cowboys are pleased to welcome, Bertie Dastard (a.k.a. Mike Perks), the editor and chief of Free Breaks Blog, a fellow-Breakspoll finalist this year in the 'Best Website/Blog' category. Mike is one of the good Samaritans in the world of breakbeat and he has been a huge supporter of The RIPEcast over the years. He launched his blog, which is a veritable gold mine of free tracks and DJ mixes, in 2010 (the same time The RIPEcast came into existence). If you're a breakbeat fan, bookmark Free Breaks Blog and check the site regularly. You can also follow FBB on Facebook. Finally, congrats to Mike for recently becoming a new dad! "The mix is a combination of the best free breaks tracks that have been featured on the site over the years or are exclusive forthcoming material. I really could have made a thousand different mixes with the amount of quality tracks on offer but wanted to try and showcase the producers and sounds that are really pushing breaks worldwide right now. Deekline, Stanton Warriors, Krafty Kuts, Future Funk Squad, Mafia Kiss, Jurassik and Se7en Deadly Breaks are all at the forefront of the UK breakbeat scene and it shows with the amount of amazing music and parties they are involved with. We have been lucky to work with most of this artists in the past and have another exclusive from Se7en Deadly Breaks coming very soon which is featured in the mix. Marten Hørger and Lunathics cover the European side of breakbeat in the mix with the usually high standard of edits and remixes they are known for. From the USA I have selected the king of breakbeat re-edits REL1 who has provided us with 9 exclusives for the blog launch including the wicked breakbeat /trap edit featured in this mix. Also we have legendary breaker DJ Icey and long time blog supporter Sychosis with two more killer tracks. The Austrailian breaks scene is alive and kicking and Philly Blunt and Micah Black provide the material to prove it with two reworks that are pure dancefloor fire." - Bertie Dastard Bertie Dastard is the editor in chief of the biggest and best breakbeat blog on the internet, www.freebreaksblog.com. In its three year existence they have gone from a passionate "fan site", to being internationally recognised as the leading blog for all things breakbeat related and nominated in the worldwide, 2013 Breakspoll awards for best website. They regularly run exclusive features and competitions from the best artists in the scene including Stanton Warriors, Krafty Kuts, Sub Slayers, Aquasky, ILS, Fort Knox Five, Mafia Kiss, D-Funk, Hexadecimal, Unstable Label, Ground Level Records, REL1, Toronto Is Broken, Jinx In Dub and many more whilst always supporting the up and coming artists and "bedroom producers". In the words of Bertie himself "We aim to be the number one site for all things breaks, beats, glitch, funk and bass related." Artwork by www.jempanufnik.com

Breakfast of Champions is one of those rare instances of improving with age. It started as a complete shitshow of ravers who'd forgotten the meaning of the word 'sleep', but it's evolved over the years into a exuberant annual celebration of music and community. Yes, it's still a shitshow, but it's the best shitshow around. Instead of playing outside in the sun this year I played inside Mighty. The inside of Breakfast of Champions has traditionally had a darker vibe, with all manner of transgressive behavior going on in the sweaty nooks and crannies of the club. I took this year as an opportunity to play some rougher moombahton/moombahcore stuff that I'd been collecting, paired with some throwbacks and funky stuff, with all tracks tweaked or edited by yours truly. So far 2013 has been a great year for San Francisco, Space Cowboys, and me personally, and I attribute it all to this first mix of the year. Right now, Breakfast of Champions is nominated as 'Best Large Event' on BreaksPoll.com. It would be incredibly cool to see it win, for this year and for all the other dozen years of good times we've had. Also nominated is The RIPEcast as 'Best Radio Show'. Please go give us your vote of support at www.breakspoll.com. - 8ball Enjoy! For more information on the Space Cowboys visit us at www.spacecowboys.org or www.facebook.com/sfspacecowboys. The Space Cowboys are thrilled to bring you this RIPEcast-exclusive mix from iBreaks super-star and 2012 Breakspoll-winner, Colombo. Today, we can safely say that nobody is making more noise in the world of breakbeat. On June 1st, Colombo will be making his first-and-only U.S. appearance right here in San Francisco at Public Works for Strategik's 4-year anniversary. Joining him on the bill is Space Cowboys' own, DJ Zach Moore. This week our old pal, Plaza de Funk, is back on The RIPEcast with this live recording of his set from Seismic's After The Love party on September 24th at Mighty in San Francisco. Plaza De Funk has been a staple in the dance community for the past 5 years and it looks like nothing will slow his way to the top of the music world. Since moving to London in '05, he has released award-winning records receiving huge support from the likes of Fatboy Slim, Elite Force, Plump DJs, Rico Tubbs & Black Noise. ‘Got The Funk’ on West Records and ‘Back Home’ EP on Mantra Breaks both received the ‘Sureplayer’ status in DJ Mag, his ‘Do It’ record was licensed on the recent Global Underground mix by the Plump DJs & the track ‘Push ‘n’ Pull' was played several time on Radio 1 by Annie Mac & Annie Nightingale as well as getting ‘Single of the Month’ in IDJ. The Italian doesn’t quite stop there though. In '08 he was nominated for 2 of the categories at the Breakspoll awards; Breakthrough Producer and Breakthrough DJ. Plaza walked away from the ceremony clutching the Best Breakthrough Producer award and hasn’t had the chance to look back since. In the past 2yrs Mr Funk has played clubs & festivals around the world & back again stopping off in Australia, the US, China, Russia, Latvia, Belarus, endless dates across Europe & of course back home in the UK at Glastonbury, Glade, Chew The Fat!, Fabric & Ministry of Sound. Plaza is busier that ever with a barrage of material & remixes to come out on Distinctive, MOFO, Dusted Breaks (Best New Label Breakspoll '10), Rogue Industries & Royal One and some very special dates booked in across Europe. "We were somewhere around Gerlach on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold....I remember saying something like 'I feel a bit lightheaded; maybe you should drive'. And suddenly there was a terrible roar all around us and the sky was full of what looked like huge jetsprays, all swooping and screeching and diving around the RV, which was going about three miles an hour with the windows open, cruising to Black Rock City. And a voice was screaming: 'Holy Jesus! What are these goddamn animals?'.....I regained my composure and drawled, 'My friend, we are home. THIS is DISTRIKT.'" - Hunter "Shack" Thomspon For sixteen years our pal Simon Shackleton (or "Shack" as we like to call him) has been writing, recording and releasing chart-topping tracks under various pseudonyms (Elite Force, Zodiac Cartel, Dust Bowl, Lunatic Calm and Flicker Noise) for many of the world's finest dance labels (Lot49, TCR, Kingsize, Thrust Recordings). And few, if any, have made a more indelible imprint on the world of dance music in as many areas (DJ, producer & label boss) over a longer period of time than has Shack. The most recognized of his aliases, Elite Force, has been celebrated around the globe for both his accomplishments in the studio and incendiary live DJ sets. Earlier this year, he received the prestigious Breakspoll award for top producer while his multi-genre label, U&A Recordings, was also recognized by Breakspoll as the very best in the world of breakbeat. In his twenty-one years as a DJ, Elite Force has electrified dance crowds at major clubs and international festivals with his signature "bass-driven warehouse music" from Kazakhstan to Australia, London to Tokyo and Budapest to Black Rock City. "Elite Force unites the sometimes warring factions of electro house, techno, and breakbeat, like a peace keeper who values the spirit of cooperation and tolerance", wrote Beatport in 2009. "He was forged in the fires of breakbeat, which has always had a habit of sucking in sounds that pass by. His sets are like a team performance, with tracks coming from all corners of the bass-driven sector, to create a vibrant hodgepodge of boundary-pushing dance music….“ Unbeknownst to many of his fans, Shack's exploits as a producer extend far beyond the realm of dance music into film, television and even video games. His music has been the soundtrack for major motion pictures like The Matrix, Emmy-award winning TV shows such as CSI and his recent collaboration with acclaimed film-score composer, Klaus Badelt (Pirates of the Caribbean, Gladiator, X-Men), on PS3's Motorstorm Apocalypse is yet another crown jewel in a litany of musical accomplishments. Since his first pilgrimage to Black Rock City in 2009, Shack has become a good friend to many of us who make our home on the corner of 9:00 and F at Burning Man. And we're thrilled to have him back in the DISTRIKT line-up again in 2011 (you can catch Shack's closing set on the DISTRIKT sound system Wednesday afternoon). Suffice to say we couldn't think of a better choice for this, the last episode of the DISTRIKT podcast before Burning Man, than Elite Force. Enjoy Everyone! Earlier this week our pal http://soundcloud.com/elite-force, recently dubbed the world's Top Breakbeat producer by Breakspoll, had this to say about the state of the breakbeat genre, “It's been a year when Breaks has bounced back. There have been far too many people bashing it as a genre and deriding it, but last year it was strong, and this year it will be stronger as more new talent is nurtured and they hone their skills, and as more of the old guard of refuseniks return to the fold.” Of course this is music to the ears of those of us in the Cowboy clan who love the broken beat. And it's only appropriate that we echo Shack's sentiments this week by featuring an up-and-coming talent in the world of breakbeat, the http://soundcloud.com/dublic twins (a.k.a. Gergely and Gábor Tóth) from Budapest. Thanks to the modern miracles of Facebook and SoundCloud our man on the ground, Zach Moore, became pen pals with one half of Dublic, Gábor, several months ago and this week we're happy to be welcoming the twins to the RIPEcast. As you'll soon appreciate from this bangin', 58-minute RIPEcast exclusive mix, http://soundcloud.com/dublic play a wide range of new wave Breaks, Electro, Dubstep and House with a hip-hop and funk flavor. They're known for their greasy re-edits and re-rubs (of which there are no less than eight in this mix!) and their hugely-popular mix series entitled ‘Next Episode', which is dedicated to introducing the freshest trends in the underground electronic music scene (all three volumes of the 'Next Episode' series are available for free at Dublic's SoundCloud page: www.soundcloud.com/dublic). And along with fellow DJ/producer Wondawulf, the Dublic twins throw one of the hottest underground parties in Hungary, 'FutureMusic', which brings the newest styles and trends in dance music to Budapest. Gergely and Gábor started spinning only five years ago and an even more-recent foray into the studio has produced dozens of tight re-edits and re-rubs which have already found their way into the sets of some of the biggest names in the international scene including our friend and Breakspoll's top Breaks DJ, Krafty Kuts, Lady Waks, KouncilHouse and the legendary Hungarian DJ, Palotai, among others. And be on the look out for a series of Dublic originals in the very near future, which are sure to be just as good as their re-rubs! Many thanks to Dublic from The Space Cowboys for taking the time to put together this fantastic RIPEcast exclusive mix! Enjoy Boys and Girls! Martin Reeves, AKA Krafty Kuts, is without doubt one of the world's greatest DJs. Lauded in the UK, worshipped in Australia, acclaimed in America, where ever he plays he is guaranteed to cause a commotion with his riotous skills. So far in a glittering career he has gained dance music's top accolades including Best International DJ at the Australian Dance Music Awards, Breakspoll's Face of Breaks 2003 and Best Breaks DJ at the M8 Ibiza awards 2006, in only his first year as a resident on the white isle. A stunning haul at Breakspoll 2007 saw him claiming Best Album for his debut long player ‘Freakshow', Best DJ for a record third consecutive year and to cap it off, the richly deserved Outstanding Contribution to Breakbeat award that acknowledged his long journey to the acme of club culture. Inspired by the hip-hop and electro sounds that were rocking his world, Martin first stepped behind a pair of decks when he entered a DJ competition and incredibly, as a complete novice, he made it all the way to the final. With his love affair for the wheels of steel well and truly cemented, Krafty Kuts set about learning his art, perfecting the cutting and scratching that was to become the core of his DJ sets.

Due to some pretty serious gremlins, namely massive computer failure and laptops being held to ransom by angry Frenchmen, I have been unable to record a show for you this month, meaning you will have to wait a little longer before hearing my dulcet tones again. But never fear! Instead I have brought you a serious serving of beats and bass courtesy of my fellow Exeter dwellers - none other than the South West's premier breaks duo, Ben and Lex. Residents at Beatz and Bobz, the UK's longest-running breaks event, and with an ever-growing string of releases to their name, the boys are mainstays on the circuit. 2009 has seen them finally break through to national and international fame after wowing the masses at Breakspoll at the beginning of the year and knocking people's socks off at Glade this 'summer'. It's a bit of a clich
