I'm watching one of those stupid pawn shows while I'm sitting here writing this episode description out, and man, are these the stupidest shows ever made or what? I mean I don't know who is watching them, other than total morons, because they don't say anything worth a damn and it's so boring it puts me to sleep. Then you got the ads, and they're even worse! Next thing you know, they'll be asking you to subscribe just to hear even more of their inane crap? God, don't give them any ideas. Anyway, call in your friends the Piss Whizzard, the Kickstarter CEO, and Billy West, and crack open a Pepsi of Shame, cause it's time for an all new YKS! Music for YKS is courtesy of Howell Dawdy, Craig Dickman, Mr. Baloney, and Mark Brendle. Additional research by Zeke Golvin. YKS is edited by Producer Dan. Some day the aliens will come to Earth and give us the power to experience funny ass jokes and moderately informative film criticism simultaneously. Until then, we'll all have to settle for 3 boneheads making dick jokes and talking about movies: Farrarch! This past Friday we had one of the all time great boneheads Chris James uncork Jesseuary IV with a great flick, 2016's Arrival. And just in case you thought we were gonna get any less boneheaded, we got our buddy Tim Kalpakis back for next week's episode on the great Rian Johnson's Looper! It's a bonehead meeting, and you're invited, only at YKS Premium. This week's YKS is sponsored by these fine brands:Athletic Greens - Vitamins…now that's what I call adaptogens! Hang out with Al Mega as he chats with award-winning comic book creator and graphic novelist Rich Koslowski. Tune in to learn all about his latest project from Top Shelf/IDW, F.A.R.M. System & more… Rich Koslowski's Website: https://www.richkoslowski.com/ Rich's Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/rich.koslowski F.A.R.M. SYSTEM SYNOPSIS: In the Farm System, having an incredible and unique power is only the first step. Guided by an army of agents, managers, and experts, recruits must undergo rigorous psychological evaluations, harassment and sensitivity seminars, marketing, and endorsement workshops, and costume design meetings, all to boost their chances of recruitment into an A-list superhero team. Some recruits make “the Bigs”. Some have fleeting moments of glory, then lose it all. Some take “Blue Cowl” gigs as superpowered bodyguards for famous actors or powerful CEOs. Some flounder in the System for years, never getting “the call”. And some find success by joining teams of a… less reputable ilk. Following the profound pop-culture satire of Three Fingers, The King, and BB Wolf and The Three LPs, award-winning graphic novelist Rich Koslowski examines the hopes, disappointments, perseverance, and triumphs of the super-gifted… and the sometimes drastic lengths they will go to achieve fortune and fame. ABOUT RICH KOSLOWSKI: Rich Koslowski is best known for his fan-friendly comic book series The 3 Geeks (later Geeksville), as the recipient of three Eisner Award nominations, and for the much-lauded graphic novel Three Fingers in 2002 (published by Top Shelf Productions), which won the coveted Ignatz Award for Outstanding Graphic Novel and was named as one of the 500 Essential Graphic Novels by Harper Collins in 2008. In 2005, his second graphic novel with Top Shelf, The King, was released and has been published in multiple foreign languages. In 2007, he wrote his first novel, a Christmas thriller entitled The List. 2008 brought Koslowski his first writing assignment for Marvel Comics, rebooting their popular Guardian character, now named Weapon Omega. Koslowski's writing of Weapon Omega was recognized with a Prism Award. In 2010, his third graphic novel with Top Shelf, BB Wolf and the Three LPs, was released and Koslowski won the Glyph Award for Best Artist. Thank You for Watching / Listening! Rob GEE on the Virtual Sessions presented by The DJ Sessions 1/12/23   About Rob GEE - Rob GEE is famous all across The Universe as "the hardest DJ to ever play the Limelight in NYC." In the club's early 90's heyday, the versatile GEE kept delirious audiences going through spinning at Limelight's "Future Shock" dance/techno nights and performing with his live band as well as spinning at the club's "Rock And Roll Church" metal/ rock/ industrial nights. The crowds kept coming back to Limelight, just like they did in Australia, Japan, Italy, Spain, Scotland, Austria, Hungary and Belgium to name a few. GEE is a recurring headliner at Sensation,Thunderdome, Mysteryland, and Love Parade, where GEE played before one million people.  His diverse appeal keeps him performing weekly at all types of musical events and concerts. GEE has shared the stage with everyone from Hatebreed and Biohazard to Crystal Method, Busta Rhymes, Kurtis Blow, and Afrika Bambaataa. His GEEness has also has spun at many Slipknot and Korn after parties with his good friend, DJ Starscream a.k.a. #0 of Slipknot.  GEE's history of DJing and live performances shows his dedication of bringing the fusion of organic and electronic music to a wide variety of listeners. GEE's love of hip-hop, hardcore, techno, metal and every other genre for that matter set him apart from the rest. While other DJs make tracks and spin records, GEE is an Artist who writes original songs. His indecisiveness as to whether or not he wanted to breakdance and spin hip-hop or jump in the mosh pit and play in a metal band was one of the reasons he began to cultivate his own style of both.  Rob GEE is the only artist of his kind to collaborate and create with members of respected rock, metal, hardcore and hip-hop acts such as Slipknot, Hatebreed, Biohazard, Wu-Tang Clan, Cypress Hill, and System Of A Down (just to name a few) creating a unification of Rock, Electronic, & Metal as well any other style GEE chooses to use. The GEEsult is Rob GEE gabber music.  Rob GEE says, "There are no boundaries in music" . GEE is writing history launching gabber into the scene of the galaxy...... "The Gabber Guru," as GEE is known for his constant motivation of #PositivianVibes gained worldwide fame after the release of "Ecstasy You Got What I Need". The song went Gold and was the #1 video on The Box for 13 straight weeks. At the same time, "Ecstasy" rose to #9 on the pop charts and earned him Best Artist, Best Producer and Best Song of the year at The Thunder Awards in Holland. The GEE Man has recently enjoyed more worldwide success along with band mates Neophyte and Tieum with their collective efforts "Coming At You Strong", "Anxiety", & "Rage With Pride" under the name "Riot Squad". Rob GEE is still pushing solo success globally with his most recent hit "Right Now". GEE, always with his open mind, has enjoyed recent Hardstyle & Rawstyle bangers teaming up with heavy hitters like The Prophet and Adaro. While in the same breath has been rocking the mainstream airwaves collaborating with hardcore giants Noize Suppressor, Mad Dog, & Furyan. Look out later this year, nu metal will meet hardcore in the studio ring when Rob GEE teams up with none other than Shavo Odadjian of System Of A Down. Rob GEE won't be stopped!!!!!! The sound is 100% Rob GEE, which means eclectic, unexpected and completely unique. Kate Hawkesby: Cancel Culture is out of control, we're not allowed to be proud women

Early Edition with Kate Hawkesby

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 10, 2022 3:05

I'm just wondering this morning if we, as women, need to apologise now for being women. Or for calling ourselves women. Is it insulting that we are happy to be women? Adele has been in hot water this week for her acceptance speech at the Brit Awards as she collected the gong for Artist of the Year. It used to be two categories, Best Male Artist and Best Female Artist, but in a move we should've all seen coming, that was changed to the more gender neutrally appropriate “Best Artist'. So Adele said when she accepted the award, "I understand why the name of this award has changed but I really love being a woman and being a female artist. I do!" That's what she said – to huge applause and cheers by the way. But here's the difference between the real world and the online world – the keyboard warriors lit up.  What travesty was this?! No less than a transphobic slur, she must be transphobic! Why would she say such a thing? How dare she! Twitter users (who else) blew up in fury – “Who'd have thought Adele was a transphobe and would use her platform to call for the destruction of the trans community!” said one. The destruction of the trans community? Are you serious? Some said they'd lost respect for her and ‘wouldn't spend another cent on her music'. She was accused of confusing teenagers. To be clear here, all she did was say she loves being a woman. And that now, apparently qualifies as cancellation worthy. And this is where cancel culture is eating itself. It's so inane and ridiculous that you now cannot even enjoy being the gender you are, for fear it upsets those who don't believe in gender.  Worse still, those who are affronted by her daring to say she likes being a woman, are now bullying her online, in the hope that what? She denies her own existence? That she apologises for being a woman? That she stops referring to herself as a woman? That God forbid she backtracks and decries enjoying being a woman?  Where is all this going? What's the end game here? Why do we all have to be the same? And why do we have to bend and change ourselves constantly to fit in with whoever the latest person or group to be offended is? Surely that's a bottomless pit?  There will be no individuality left at all, if we go down that track. I mean the Tweeters that are outraged that she's apparently confused teenagers by saying she loves being a woman, what about the teenagers who're seeing this bullying backlash against a woman for saying she likes being a woman? What message is that sending them? Some sprung to Adele's defence – thank goodness. One author's reported as saying, "A decade ago, if someone had said a woman would [be criticised] for the thought-crime of saying she liked being a woman, I would have laughed at such a ludicrous suggestion. Now it is happening.”  She's right - it is ludicrous. So ludicrous in fact that Adele hasn't even bothered responding to it. But maybe someone should tell Shania Twain? Surely it can't be long before her song, “Man, I feel like a woman,” gets cancelled.

© The Tin Pan Alley Podcast; Intro melody by Brooke Alexx In this episode, I got to talk to the wonderful Sarah Kaiser who has not only been an inspiration to me personally, but who continues to inspire others on their musical journeys as well – as a vocal coach, gospel choir director, and through her own music. We talked about the meaning of faith and creativity, German poet Paul Gerhardt, Sarah's latest Christmas album “Vom Himmel Hoch” (English: “From heaven above”), and her exciting and formative years in London, the United States, and Berlin. --- Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sarahkaiserlive Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sarahkaiserband About Sarah: Sarah Kaiser is a passionate singer. She has been active as a singer, choir director and vocal coach since the late 1990s. She has published 6 solo albums and 3 albums with the renowned German vocal jazz quartett Berlin Voices to date. Over 50.000 albums sold so far with her very own, unique musical blend of Jazz, Soul, Gospel and Pop. In the fall of 2020, she released her latest album, a Christmas album: Vom Himmel Hoch. This time not only accompanied by her band but by a string quartet, letting each of the 12 tracks, often centuries-old and well known, shine in a new, bright light, intimate and energetic at the same time. Sarah regularly performs with her band. She has received concert invitations from the German government (Bundestag), to diverse jazz festival such as the Jazztage Dresden, ENJOY Jazzfestival and jazzopen Stuttgart, has shared the stage with German artists such als Heinz-Rudolf Kunze or die Prinzen, and has played a variety of festivals and events. The most exotic tour destination of the Sarah Kaiser Band so far has been Saudi Arabia. 2004 Sarah was awarded „Best Artist 2003“ at the Promikon Artist Fair in Gießen. In 2011, she received the IMPALA Award. Choir directing is one of Sarah's passions: for six years, she led the young gospel choir Soul 2 Soul, started in Berlin Marzahn as part of a social and cultural youth work there. The Berlin-based Gospelchoir inspired! was also founded and led by her until 2012. In 2014 she directed a Flashmob choir for a special pre-christmas performance orchestrated by Berliner Stadtmission in one of Berlin's biggest department store. In 2019, she founded her latest gospelchoir Praise Connection. Sarah Kaiser works as a vocal coach both in her private studio and at the Berlin School of Popular Arts as well as at Berlin's UdK (University of the Arts) C-Seminar. She leads seminars and workshops for singers and choirs, especially on the topics of solo vocal performance, improvisation and (gospel) choir. She also works as a studio session singer.

On the show today… The 2021 ARIA Awards are nearly upon us and this year they are going to look refreshingly different. There have been some huge changes made to how the two major categories are judged and it's sure to shake up the Australian music industry. Plus, we're back in the swing of glitzy awards shows and red carpets but they are definitely not all they are cracked up to be, at least according to a spicy new interview with Ed Sheeran. The award-winning musician has lifted the lid on what really goes on behind the scenes of the world's biggest award shows and look, it sounds pretty brutal. And it's the new magazine cover everyone is talking about. Time Magazine has released their annual list of The World's Most 100 Influential People of 2021 and for the first time, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have appeared together formally for a magazine cover. The cover itself has received a wave of ridicule, but the cover story contains a pretty pointed message for the couple's biggest and most vocal critics. “When we are able to express ourselves, we can let go of different things that we've been through.” Kendra Muecke. There is no limit to what possibilities are available when it comes to art, and this is especially true in times of change and uncertainty. The entertainment industry which was especially hit by the effects of the pandemic proved this after they were forced to explore new possibilities to showcase the creations and connect with their audience. Our guest today, Kendra Muecke, was able to explore such possibilities and got to live an exceptional experience during this period. She affirms the importance of embracing and being confident in your art even in the most difficult of times. Kendra Muecke is a singer/songwriter, writer, actress, and published author from Houston, TX-based now in Los Angeles, CA. She performs under the stage name “Kendra & the Bunnies”, as a psychedelic folk-rock Americana and spoken word artist. “Kendra & the Bunnies” performs both as a full band and as a solo acoustic act. She graduated from Pepperdine University with a BFA in Theatre Arts and has, additionally, studied music business/recording at the Musicians Institute and songwriting at Vanderbilt University's Blair School of Music. In today's episode, Kendra will be talking to us about how and what she perceives art to be and also how she has evolved in her art and managed to keep up with changes and the uncertainties in the current environment. Listen in! Social Media Links: https://www.kendraandthebunnies.com  https://www.instagram.com/kenbunny/  https://twitter.com/kenbunny  https://www.facebook.com/kendraandthebunnies  https://www.tiktok.com/@kendraandthebunnies?lang=en I think I was four years old when mum took me to the local downtown theater and had me audition. [2:46] I started doing professional vocal lessons, professional dancing, and acting lessons which became my everything. [3:13] I would go down to the theater several times a week and acted and learned all the songs and made friends. [3:20] Later on, I got into sports too but pretty much my entire life has been about acting, theater, and the arts. [3:32] Later on, in high school, I got into rock and roll music and philosophical questioning and spirituality, guitar and poetry too which has played a big part in my career. [3:41] I feel like art is the extension of my expression. [4:22] I would go through these experiences and make them part of my memory and that is where the song comes in. [5:10] 2020 was a total surprise. I had some tours booked but had to shift my mindset and postpone all the events. [7:23] I however decided to go ahead and switch to all online since I was already very active on social media and I had live-streamed a little bit. [8:15] I live-streamed over 150 shows last year and partnered with venues across the country and did a virtual live stream tour concert with people all over the country. [8:30] For people that were really creative about doing this, you might you probably reached audiences you wouldn't have. [8:55] I started to be known as ‘the live stream person' and so I got a lot of opportunities from people just by word of mouth because I was consistently showing up. [9:02] I am now doing a little bit of professional live streaming where I've been signed on by an agency to help grow another platform. [9:13] It gave us a reason to put a pause button on things and think and so a lot of my songs and moments came in particular from being at home experiencing this year. [9:52] I will talk about the song ‘Self-love Proclamation' since you talked about it earlier which I was recently nominated for three Josie awards. [11:00] ‘Self-love proclamation' is co-written with a lot of people in Nashville and is all about just ripping off the band-aid and saying this is who I am and I'm going to love myself for who I am and that journey to finding ourselves is evident in the song. [11:15] Commercial Break. [11:40] Song teaser [12:50] There are so many different things that come to mind, the first thing would be the healing element to art. [15:01] When we can express ourselves, we can let go of different things that we've been through. [15:08] I work sometimes with this nonprofit based in Los Angeles, called artists for trauma and is where people who have PTSD, physical, mental, veterans, emotional, spiritual healing, come together to do art and I think that encapsulates what art can do for us. [15:14] It's done that for me personally, just like dealing with, you know, different racing thoughts, or whatever goes on in my life, I'm able to channel that into the guitar or into a poem or lyrics, and let it go. [15:35] The next thing would be the cohesion of community thought that can be showcased through an event. [16:09] It is also a really good way to start conversations in a way that is accommodating to different perspectives. [17:16] Sometimes I think about how there's there is art written about the previous history, but then I realize that we are creating history every day. [18:31] I'm really excited to see people start to go back to concert venues and have those shared experiences because we've craved being together in those shared experiences. [18:58] It still may take a while but I think we're going to appreciate it even more now. [19:10] I watched a lot of live streams with different artists and put on a lot of different live streams with different artists. [20:02] The one thing that I've been going back to over and over right now is, only you know. [22:08] We can take advice and we can listen to other people and we can listen for clues from the universe but at the end of the day, it's about our own perspective and how we filter in. [22:14] This means this only we know our true north and our true path. [22:40] …………………………………………………………………………………… Thank You to our August Sponsor! Peace! https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=5E6WCP8KAS4NG Rajesh Nagulakonda, an enormously talented graphic designer and illustrator, hails from Chirala, a small town in southern India. Born into a family of typographers and goldsmiths, he has always had a huge passion for art, despite graduating with a degree in Science. In 2007 he had the opportunity to work with Campfire Graphic Novels in New Delhi, where he started working on several graphic novels: Krishna The Defender of Dharma, Pride and Prejudice, Alice in Wonderland, Ganesha, Buddha-An Enlightened Life, Ashoka Mauryan King and Chanakya of kings and Serpents, some of his works have been awarded with Comic Con India Awards for best artist, best colorist and best graphic novel of the year. Here are some questions we posed to Rajesh: Why did you choose Buddha for one of your beautiful graphic novels? I have loved Buddha since childhood just for his peaceful face and I used to draw his face very often. I treasured Kieron Moore's beautiful script that helped me so much in learning Buddha's story and especially enhancing my coloring skills. Illustration is not only reading scripts and drawings, I believe it is fundamental for the illustrator, to read between the lines and tell the story through symbolism and shades of color. Buddha-An Enlightened Life, won the award for Best Graphic Novel of the Year, at the 2017 Comic Con India Awards. And I, in the same edition, had the honor of being awarded Best Artist and Best Colorist. Do you feel that the graphic novel can be a useful medium to talk about your wonderful country, India? Yes. Definitely the graphic novel format is more like a sort of tableux film. It engages readers emotionally and takes them far away with their imagination. I love telling the story of my country, its thousand-year-old culture and its extraordinary mythology. How long have you been working on graphic novels? I've been working on graphic novels for a good 12 years. It was in my destiny to be an illustrator. I involve mind and soul in my work. It's a great passion that feeds an infinite desire for creativity, as well as a constant desire to excite readers. Projects for the future? As a freelance illustrator, I work on various animation and graphic novel projects. I can't reveal anything at the moment, but I can assure you that these are really interesting initiatives.
