Broadcaster and Radio DJ Annie Nightingale passed away earlier this year. In memory of her, please enjoy this episode of the Book Club podcast, from the archives, in which she joined Sam Leith in 2020 to talk about the publication of her book Hey Hi Hello. Annie Nightingale was Britain's first female DJ, an occasional Spectator contributor, and the longest serving presenter of Radio One. Annie spoke to Sam about the Beatles' secrets, BBC sexism, getting into rave culture, the John Peel she knew - and how while most people never get past the music they love in their teens, she's never lost her drive to hear tunes she's never heard before.
Lauren Laverne talks to the broadcaster Annie Nightingale in a programme first broadcast in 2020. Annie Nightingale died in January 2024 at the age of 83.
As January drags on, we look back at the recently departed. A tribute to BBC legend Annie Nightingale, a farewell to Der Kaiser - Franz Beckenbauer and the man who will forever be Hutch to a generation - David Soul. A much more....
In this episode we welcome the legendary Penelope Spheeris and invite her to talk us through her extraordinary life and brilliant career. Barney wastes little time in asking the Louisiana-born filmmaker about the shocking traumas of her childhood and teenage years. We hear about her alcoholic mother's multiple marriages and the family's move to Southern California that led to Penelope putting herself through film school before graduating from UCLA. Along with the Saturday Night Live shorts she made with actor/comic Albert Brooks, Penelope talks about the pioneering Rock 'n' Reel production company that made '70s videos for everyone from Funkadelic to Fleetwood Mac. We also learn about her conversion to punk rock via Brendan Mullen's Masque club, where she shot SoCal hardcore bands like X, Fear, the Germs and Black Flag, the footage winding up in 1981's thrilling Decline of Western Civilization. From the first Decline we jump forward seven years to Decline II — and to a discussion of the '80s glam-metal scene that exploded on West Hollywood's Sunset Strip via bands such as W.A.S.P. and Poison. In addition we hear clips from Mat Snow's 1989 audio interview with all-girl quartet Vixen, sparking a discussion of rampant misogyny on the big-hair metal scene. With Decline II: The Metal Years being our guest's de facto passport to directing 1992's enormo-grossing Wayne's World, we ask Spheeris to recall her not-altogether- felicitous experience of working on the hit Saturday Night Live spinoff with Mike Myers and Dana Carvey. We also consider how the week's featured writer "Metal Mike" Saunders bridged the gulf between metal and punk, tracing his maverick career from a 1971 Creem review of Sir Lord Baltimore's Kingdom Come to the 1978 formation of SoCal hardcore band Angry Samoans. After Mark offers quotes from recently-added library pieces about electro-pop duo Erasure, rapper Schoolly D and, yes, Penelope Spheeris, Jasper closes out the episode with remarks on articles about El Paso's At the Drive-In and David Bowie. Many thanks to special guest Penelope Spheeris. Visit her website at penelopespheeris.com. Pieces discussed: The Decline of Western Civilization, Penelope Spheeris: The "Mad Surgeon" of Film, Vixen audio, Sir Lord Baltimore, A Brief Survey of the State of Metal Music Today, Metal Mike Saunders, Angry Samoans, Annie Nightingale, Erasure, Penelope Spheeris interviewed by Richard Harrington, Schoolly D, At the Drive-In and David Bowie.

In this re-run from 2020, the late DJ and radio host reflects on memories from BBC Radio 1, disrupting the patriarchy and the keys to success in broadcasting. Annie Nightingale, who died last week at the age of 83, was the first women radio presenter on BBC Radio 1-and the longest serving broadcaster in the station's history. She became known for championing new, underground music and led the movement for women to become DJs and broadcasters, becoming a necessarily disruptive force across radio and live music. Fans of Nightingale's knew her as the Queen of Breaks, given her strong affinity for the sound. But she also introduced listeners to prog rock, punk, indie and dance music, and was unfeignedly passionate about them all. While she had no technical know-how when she started at the BBC, that didn't stop her. Despite her parents' request to "have something to fall back on," she dove head first into broadcasting, establishing herself quickly and even braving listeners' expectations by booking acts who weren't considered trendy or mainstream at the time. In this archival conversation with Martha Pazienti Caidan—who worked closely with Nightingale at BBC Radio 1—she discusses her memories and encounters in the music industry: being sworn at by Johnny Rotten; touring with Underworld; discovering her love for drill and grime; and the keys to success for aspiring broadcasters. Listen to the episode in full.

“Keep your feet firmly on the floor and wave your arms and your body around.” DJ Annie Nightingale gives us a ‘rave' dance class, remembering the acid house explosion, The Happy Mondays and meeting Björk during Annie's time as an “honorary raver” in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s. Reflecting on more than fifty years as a broadcaster, she reveals the one thing that she can't say out loud and the unique item of clothing that she shares with Nick Rhodes from Duran Duran. Hey Hi Hello: Five Decades of Pop Culture from Britain's First Female DJ, published by White Rabbit, is out now.
Annie Nightingale joins Nikki Bedi and Suzy Klein to talk about her 50 years in broadcasting, including being the first female DJ on Radio 1 and how her love of new music has led to her being the station's longest-serving broadcaster. Annie also explains why she owes a debt to The Beatles. Ranger Jonathan Ford explains how his love of birds took him to live in Papa Westray, one of the smallest islands in Orkney. Chef Poppy O'Toole lost her job and was inspired by her siblings to make PoppyCooks TikTok videos. She swiftly got 1.8 million followers and will talk about her new career path. Neil Oliver shares his Inheritance Tracks: La Mer by Charles Trenet and Martha by Tom Waits. Adam Andrusier was once an obsessive collector of autographs and his drive to collect signatures inspired Zadie Smith to write a story based loosely on his life. Adam's obsession eventually turned into a profession, with roots going back to his father's collecting habits. Hey Hi Hello: Five Decades of Pop Culture from Britain's broadcasting DJ pioneer Annie Nightingale is out now in paperback. Poppy Cooks: The Food You Need by Poppy O'Toole is out on the 16th September. The Story of the World in 100 Moments by Neil Oliver is published on the 16th of September. Two Hitlers and a Marilyn by Adam Andrusier is out now. Producer: Claire Bartleet Editor: Richard Hooper
TISOKI is back on the podcast to talk about angel investing, fashion, and his new album release. British bass producer Tisoki today released his poignant debut album, ‘01953' on Monstercat. Featuring ten tracks that traverse classic dubstep stylings, trap-fueled grime, experimental bass, and beyond, his genre-fluidity is a glimpse into the varied musical journey that brought him to where he is today. The new single, “Made 4 This” signals a shift in Tisoki's artistic evolution, catering to an introspective listening experience prompted by the last year spent in isolation. With the album title paying homage to the postal code of his hometown in Wymondham, UK, ‘01953' is a collection of formative influences drawn from the underground culture and spaces that shaped him. Tisoki reveals, “I'm so excited to share my debut album ‘01953' with the world. It's been a year in the making through some very tough times and I feel it's a true representation of the art I want to put out.” Tisoki's impressive catalog has earned him support from household names across electronic music including Excision, Mija, Annie Nightingale, Skrillex, and DJ Snake to name a few. With a background in rock and metal bands, his high-octane performance chops have landed him on world-renowned stages such as Red Rocks, EDC Las Vegas, and Coachella. As live music returns this year, fans can look forward to experiencing the prolific producer's new material in a proper warehouse setting soon.

Annie Nightingale Backstage At the Bestival Interview
Click here to buy: https://adbl.co/3kBlroc Hey Hi Hello is a greeting we have all become familiar with, as Annie Nightingale cues up another show on Radio One. Always in tune with the nation's taste, yet effortlessly one step ahead for more than five decades, in this book Annie digs deep into her crate of memories, experiences and encounters to deliver an account of a life lived on the frontiers of pop cultural innovation. As a dj and broadcaster on radio, tv and the live music scene, Annie has been an invigorating and necessarily disruptive force, working within the establishment but never playing by the rules. She walked in the door at Radio One as a rebel, its first female broadcaster, in 1970. Fifty years later she became the station's first CBE in the New Year's Honours List; still a vital force in British music, a dj and tastemaker who commands the respect of artists, listeners and peers across the world. Hey Hi Hello tells the story of those early, intimidating days at Radio One, the Ground Zero moment of punk and the epiphanies that arrived in the late 80s with the arrival of acid house and the Second Summer of Love. It includes faithfully reproduced and never before seen encounters with Bob Marley, Marc Bolan, The Beatles and bang-up-to-date interviews with Little Simz and Billie Eilish. Funny, warm and candid to a fault, Annie Nightingale's memoir is driven by the righteous energy of discovery and passion for music. It is a portrait of an artist without whom the past fifty years of British culture would have looked very different indeed.

In this week’s Book Club podcast my guest is Annie Nightingale - Britain’s first female DJ, occasional Spectator contributor, and longest serving presenter of Radio One. Ahead of the publication of her new book Hey Hi Hello, Annie tells me about the Beatles’ secrets, BBC sexism, getting into rave culture, the John Peel she knew - and how when most people never get past the music they love in their teens, she’s never lost her drive to hear tunes she’s never heard before.

Annie Nightingale was BBC Radio 1’s first female presenter and is its longest-serving DJ, celebrating her 50th anniversary at the station this year. Born and brought up in south west London, she fell in love with the romance and mystery of radio through her father’s meticulous tuning of their home set to broadcasts from exotic places like Prague and Hilversum. On leaving school at 17, she spent a year on a journalism course in central London. After relocating to Brighton, she worked her way up through local newspapers to the national press and magazines and eventually, by the mid-1960s, to TV. She interviewed the Beatles as a young journalist, and gave early support to artists including David Bowie, Ian Dury, Eminem and Primal Scream. In 1970, she was the first woman DJ to join Radio 1 with a Sunday evening show. From 1978 to 1982, Annie was the sole female presenter on the BBC TV music show The Old Grey Whistle Test, the only woman to have held the job. Her excitement for new music and musical genres from acid house to grime, hasn’t wavered. She currently hosts a weekly Radio 1 show called Annie Nightingale Presents… (on air on Wednesdays between 1 and 3 am) and has received countless awards from Caner of the Year to Commander of the Order of the British Empire, which she received this year for services to radio. Annie has a son and a daughter from her first marriage. She is twice divorced and lives in London. We are back with Madame Electrifie (aka Little Jo) talking about her glittering DJ career and journey into production with her band Cassini Circles. Fusing the best vintage beats with the best of the modern age; Madame Electrifie takes classic grooves and threads through everything from hip hop, to house, breaks and drum and bass to create a raucous dance floor focused party, all with that distinctive driving sound that's a firm nod to her breaks and tech roots missed with plenty of funk, fun and nonsense on the way. In 18 years on the decks, she's played some of the UK's leading venues across the years, from Ministry to Turnmills, and has graced many of the leading London warehouse parties supporting some of the biggest names in electronic music over the years across all spectrums of the dance music world including The Stanton Warriors, Jon Carter, Elite Force, A Skillz, , Annie Nightingale, Rob Da Bank, Krafty Kuts, and a whole host of bands. In contrast, her band Cassini Circles are a electronica act featuring vocalist Shannon Kait and producers Jo Burns (Madame Electrifie) and Yoshe Watson. Their music takes a journey through dark brooding basslines and haunting vocal melodies, through electronica, trip hop and house. Influenced by the energy of the dancefloor combined with the ambience of the after party, it's a heavy blend taking in influence from everything from jazz to dub. https://soundcloud.com/cassinicircles https://soundcloud.com/madame-electrifie Soundcloud.com/threadsradio

UK-based producer-duo Kachina have announced that they will be releasing their brand new EP, titled "Eyes Of March", on the 13th December, via Affectionate Grooves and NexGen Music, and have just shared the title track from this much-anticipated upcoming release, out 15th November. Originally a trio, Kachina tragically lost one of their members, Zurcon, to cancer earlier this year, but continue to honour him and his musical contribution, including his role in the creation of their forthcoming "Eyes Of March" EP. Kachina have already received extensive support from reputable tastemakers DJ Mag, Resident Advisor, COMPLEX and AFROPUNKas well as radio play from BBC Radio 1's Annie Nightingale, Monkiand Toddla T,BBC Radio Leicester, BBC Coventry & Warwickshire, Rinse FM's Marcus Nasty andReprezent Radio's Benteki. Racking up over 20 million streams on Spotifyalone, the group have been involved in many prestigious projects and events, including sharing stages with acclaimed artists such as Crookers andThe Bloody Beetrootsand working on collaborations withSynkro, Nero, Bar9and Distance. Kachina was created by Rob Sparx, Zurcon andWigz, and is not your regular house music project. Now, continuing on with Rob Sparx and Wigzand Based in Leicester and Leamington Spa, these multi-talented musicians have always wished to dig deeper when it comes to electronic music, explaining that, "We're writing music that isn't just functional party music; its therapy using bass, rhythm, melody & harmony, we try to capture a spiritual sense of the world mixing our favorite dance styles with a tribal sound." As a trio, Kachina injected the UK electronic scene with this positive energy for years, with their involvement in many local events such as collaborating with the Sous Solparties and playing regularly for Bloopparties, among many other projects. Drawing inspiration from a variety of underground electronic genres such as classic UK garage, dub and dubstep, Kachina are influenced by the sounds of many iconic producers and DJs from the mid-90's and early 2000's such as Tuff Jam,dubstep pioneerEl-B andGroove Chronicles, as well as the music selected by Giles Petersonon his Worldwideradio show and the early releases from Black Butter record label. Kachina also cite more contemporary acts such asGhost, Burial, Gorgon City, London Grammar andCause & Affect as influences, while their own sound could best be compared the iconic UK garage sounds of artists such as Wookie, DJ EZ andTodd Edwards. The title track from Kachina's "Eyes Of March" EP ignites a sense of dub groove with its reverb-soaked reggae-style vocals and adds a unique twist with uptempo drums and funky house-infused synth melodies. Drawing on elements from old-school UK garage and house sounds, while simultaneously sitting comfortably within contemporary electronic music genres, Kachina have created a track that oozes bluesy danceability. Kachina comments, "This is the first press release we've done since Zurcon passed away in April, RIP Ernest Payne you were a proper one in a million diamond geezer!"and goes on to explain, about their latest single, "Get yer skanking shoes on for 'Eyes of March'! The title track from Kachina's 10th and strongest release yet on Affectionate Grooves is a 130bpm epic & euphoric soulful dub journey with a memorising combination of cheeky dub vocals and an ever evolving super funky amen workout. With elements of Tuff Jam era garage, Jungle and 88-92 classic hardcore, Eyes of March is the anthem you've been waiting for!" Follow Kachina: Facebook- Twitter- Soundcloud- YouTube- Instagram

Their background as songwriters has resulted in an ultra harmonic and melodic take on club music, creating broad appeal even to those less familiar with the sound of electronic dance music. Document One's extensive remix catalogue ranges from mainstream artists such as Moby, Professor Green, Connor Maynard, all the way to heavy metal bands such as Rob Zombie and Asking Alexandra. The duo have received recognition and DJ support from such heavy weights as Knife Party, Excision, Modestep and Rusko; as well as radio plays from Mistajam, Fabio and Grooverider, Trever Nelson, Crissy Criss, DJ Target and Skream and Benga to name a few. She was the first woman ever to present on Radio 1; she's still there, 44 years on; and she's now a patron of Sound Women: this month's special guest is the almighty Annie Nightingale! She tells me about getting a job in the boys' club, keeping the Duranies on side, and the period of music that nearly destroyed even her indefatigable enthusiasm. Since it's July and therefore we're knee deep in festival season, this episode contains a crash course in what's involved in bringing the festival experience to the airways. Radio 2 editor Philippa Aylott describes the daunting job of being lead editor for the BBC's radio coverage of Glastonbury, while sound engineer Jo Miflin handles the tech side through balloon attacks and Gwyneth Paltrow encounters. And Cheeka Eyers squelches through the mud to Glastonbury's in-house (in-field?) radio station Worthy FM. To find out more about Sound Women - events in your area, training, and membership - visit soundwomen.co.uk or tweet @soundwomen. Thanks to Martin Austwick for the music, to Penny Bell and Cheeka Eyers for producing this episode, and to you for listening! Back in August with a sports special, so limber up and make sure your gym kit has been through the wash. Helen Zaltzman • CLICK HERE TO SUBSCRIBE TO THE SOUND WOMEN PODCAST ON iTUNES •

Enjoy this live recording of the Plump DJs (Grand Hotel Recordings) from the Space Cowboys' 13th annual Breakfast of Champions in San Francisco on New Year's Day. The Plumps were a surprise, unannounced addition to the line-up this year and to the delight of an unsuspecting crowd, they lit up the Funktion One stage as the sun was setting on yet another epic B.O.C. Big thanks to Lee and Andy for rocking Breakfast of Champions and for making this recording available to The RIPEcast. We hope you like it! Plumps DJs are internationally renown UK DJ/Producer duo Andy Gardner and Lee Rous, whose passion for innovation and non-conformist attitude to electronic music has fuelled their fire for over a decade. Their unmistakeable signature sound has earned them recent remix commissions from the likes of Deadmau5, Mark Ronson, Moby and Orbital while their four deck live show has lead to countless international tours and shows at London's lead music venues XOYO, Fabric and the Nest. Self admitted suckers for bass and 'the groove' Gardner&Rous fuse Electro-House, Rave, Acid, Breakbeat and Techno into their own unique style they call 'Plump Music'. They have received years of unprecedented cross genre support from the electro and bass music scenes, and their success continues to grow with their well supported 'Dirty Weekend' mix on newly formed record label, Grand Hotel Records. Dirty Weekend is the appropriately named new mix from the Plumps, containing dance floor focused music from recent Plump inspirations The Loops of Fury, Detboi, Reset!, Nom De Strip, Blatta&Inesha, Urchins and Will Bailey. Plus sterling exclusive remixes from longtime compadres NAPT, Stanton Warriors and Peo De Pitte. It also features original music from freshly signed Grand Hotel Records artistes, Bonsai Kat and SUBMO. Dirty Weekend has gathered support and plays from the likes of BBC Radio 1 DJ's Annie Mac, Mista Jam and Annie Nightingale, galvanizing an already established list of Plump enthusiasts which includes A. Track, Zinc Porter Robinson, Laidback luke, Armand Van Helden, Norman Cook and Carl Cox. The Plump DJs have a compelling history of success, cemented by their musical collaborations with legendary vocalists Gary Numan, Jermaine Jackson and Louise Rhodes, a ten year residency at Fabric Nightclub and over 1200 international shows. They are true innovators of sound who proudly co-created the popular breakbeat genre of the last decade with their initial releases on Fingerlickin Records. Known as pioneers of production whose shared passion for electronic music and the art of making people dance, they have inspired a generation of dance floor experiments. The ever evolving sound of Plump Djs continues to be met with enthusiasm from discerning dance music fans worldwide. Listen then to the sound of Plump Music. Hailing from Toulouse, Gauvain Fargeot aka Dilemn has come a long way in becoming the prominent figure in the French underground electronic scene he is today. Having been brought up surrounded by classical music and its influences, Dilemn engaged himself with a wide range of music from the aggression of Hip-Hop and Drum & Bass to the synthesised qualities of Techno before finding his comfort zone in Electro at the age of 22. Exposing and condensing all of these influences in creating his signature sound, Dilemn's music combines crunchy beats and slick warm electro lines into pumping melodies that take inspiration from and evolve the French House sound popularised by acts such as Daft Punk and Justice. Dilemn's career as a producer began with the release of the ‘Phyzicall / Check My Beat' 12” in 2007, which was followed up immediately by two more supreme releases, ‘Daylight' / ‘Time To Sing' and The Baguette EP with Les Petits Pilous later that year. All three releases were prime examples of Dilemn's technically assured and confident sound, showing off the serious talent that this young, promising producer had to offer the scene. 2010 was a huge year for Dilemn as the producer unleashed his first full-length album, Better Worlds on Bordeaux-based imprint Boxon. Thirteen tracks-full featuring a plethora of France's foremost underground talent including Youthstar, Blake & Wonderkat, Miss Trouble and Kloe, Better Worlds was given outstanding reviews that drew obvious comparisons to the works of the aforementioned Daft Punk. In the following months, not one to rest on his laurels, Dilemn released another EP on Burn The Fire with the stomping ‘Audio Control' / ‘Got U' which paired the producer with The Clamps (aka Imprintz). He continued to flex his production muscle having been approached to remix Porter Robinson's and Lazy Rich's Hello for Big Fish as the standout track on Part 2 of the remix EP, whilst Boxon continued to promote DIlemn's emphatic debut LP with a 7-track remix package that garnered radio support from luminaries such as Annie Nightingale, Kissy Sell Out and Far Too Loud. 2012 is set to cement Dilemn's glowing domestic reputation on our shores as the artist moves forward in experimenting with unfamiliar tempo territories. After causing damage in the underground Electro scene for over a decade this young producer is about to take the international stage, presenting his debut release on AudioPorn with a monster 5-track multi-genre EP that pushes tempo boundaries: the Talk About Us EP. Featuring the embellished hybrid arrangements of ‘Watts Of Funkin', ‘Two Points', ‘Kill The Nation' and ‘Afraid Of Change', plus the vocal talents of songstress de jour Ayah Marar on the titular ‘Talk About Us', the EP sees the producer retain the slick production qualities and accomplished melodic arrangements he has built his career on whilst offering something resoundingly different to the previous Dilemn back-catalogue. A colourful and painstakingly detailed layer of sounds that waver on the brink of perplexed amalgamation without losing sense of that all important funk, the EP offers a simultaneous danger and optimism that flirts with classic French House vibes. A producer with a commitment to sound excellence and an astonishing comfort in variety and tempo progression, Dilemn is sure to stake his claim as one of the most promising electronic artists worldwide.

The Terrace Podcast Presents a very special artist. Italian producer an DJ Santos astounds year after year with his diverse and consistently inspiring productions, showing that if you've got the raw talent, you can indeed be a jack of all trades and master of all of them too. He's one of those people whose creativity seems to know no bounds and needs to be indulged constantly. His quirky 2000 breakthrough track Camels remains an unforgettable and unique classic, and in the years that have passed since then he's released three acclaimed solo artist albums and the huge anthem Hold Home in 2009. To date?, he's released some 400 under a myriad of aliases (such as Maskio, Class 71, Smoke Maschine, Peter Katafalk, Bellone and Sohante), and he is executive producer for the likes of Timo Maas, Mutant Clan and Los Veteranos plus co-producer for the likes of Alex Dolby, Giorgio Roma and Trouble Soup (with Madox - now better known as Riva Starr). He's graced the legendary Annie Nightingale's show on Radio 1, played at Japan's massive Fuji Rock Festival straight after the legendary Chemical Brothers, picked up remix credits for the likes of Fatboy Slim and Armand Van Helden. All this plus a co-production for a little lady called Madonna in 2008 (on a new version of her classic Like A Prayer on her Sweet & Sticky Tour). And that's just scraping the surface. Continually evolving and refusing to stick to genre expectations and regulations, you can never predict where he's going to crop up next - or indeed how he's going to sound. Recent times have seen him focus once again on the house and techno formats, but creating something fresh therein on each occasion. He's graced the likes of Nic Fanciulli's Saved, John Digweed's Bedrock, Matthias Tanzmann's Moon Harbour, Get Physical, Figures, VIVa, Crosstown Rebels, Germany's Great Stuff and many more, bringing nothing but straight heat each time to these timeless and cutting-edge labels. It's undeniable: you play one of his records in a club, you see the reaction. He's an expert technician of innovative dancefloor bombs. www.theterracepodcast.com
This week our old pal, Plaza de Funk, is back on The RIPEcast with this live recording of his set from Seismic's After The Love party on September 24th at Mighty in San Francisco. Plaza De Funk has been a staple in the dance community for the past 5 years and it looks like nothing will slow his way to the top of the music world. Since moving to London in '05, he has released award-winning records receiving huge support from the likes of Fatboy Slim, Elite Force, Plump DJs, Rico Tubbs & Black Noise. ‘Got The Funk’ on West Records and ‘Back Home’ EP on Mantra Breaks both received the ‘Sureplayer’ status in DJ Mag, his ‘Do It’ record was licensed on the recent Global Underground mix by the Plump DJs & the track ‘Push ‘n’ Pull' was played several time on Radio 1 by Annie Mac & Annie Nightingale as well as getting ‘Single of the Month’ in IDJ. The Italian doesn’t quite stop there though. In '08 he was nominated for 2 of the categories at the Breakspoll awards; Breakthrough Producer and Breakthrough DJ. Plaza walked away from the ceremony clutching the Best Breakthrough Producer award and hasn’t had the chance to look back since. In the past 2yrs Mr Funk has played clubs & festivals around the world & back again stopping off in Australia, the US, China, Russia, Latvia, Belarus, endless dates across Europe & of course back home in the UK at Glastonbury, Glade, Chew The Fat!, Fabric & Ministry of Sound. Plaza is busier that ever with a barrage of material & remixes to come out on Distinctive, MOFO, Dusted Breaks (Best New Label Breakspoll '10), Rogue Industries & Royal One and some very special dates booked in across Europe. Any friend of Plaza de Funk's is a friend of ours! This week The Space Cowboys are pleased to welcome to The RIPEcast PDF's good pal and flat mate, the founder of FlatOut Records and the pride of Stockholm: Peo de PItte (a.k.a. Haggstrom). For his appearance on the show, Peo treats us to sixty minutes of his signature "big room beats and cutting edge synths", a tech-funk mix with plenty of attitude. Peo's RIPEcast is a mere sampling of what you'll be hearing at Burning Man this year by the way. He'll be making his first ever trip to the Black Rock Desert adding to what is promising to be an impressive roster of international DJ talent on the playa this year. Keep on eye on Peo's Facebook fan page and website (www.peodepitte.com) for his Burning Man gigs. Many thanks to Peo de Pitte from The Cowboys for this fantastic RIPEcast. Enjoy Cowpokes! A little more background on this week's guest..... Peo de Pitte hails from the city of Stockholm. Having relocated to London, Peo has been cooking up a storm with his original production; remix work and his late night, hands-up-heads-down DJ sets. He has been running his own label FlatOut Records, home to his two aliases Peo de Pitte and Haggstrom which has seen support on radio, in press and at the forefront on headline DJ's sets right around the globe. His hailed remix of ‘Riverside' by Sidney Samson has so far clocked up over 75,000 downloads! His trademark combination of big room beats and cutting edge synth's has resulted in making Peo one of the most exciting new producers to emerge since IKEA. With remixes and releases on labels such as Global Underground, SIMMA, Fingerlickin', LOT49, U&A, Frenetic and Champion Records, it is no surprise that he has won huge support from some of the dance worlds biggest acts like Afrojack, Crookers, Groove Armada, MJ Cole, Sinden, Roger Sanchez, Laidback Luke, Treasure Fingers, Kissy Sell Out, Elite Force, Jaymo & Andy George and Lee Mortimer. In-turn, this lead Peo to be invited to perform exclusive mixes for Annie Nightingale on Radio1 and Loose Cannons on Kiss FM as well as various radio stations worldwide. In the year's Peo has been on these shores, he has not had time to stop, unless of course, his studio surrounds him. He has toured Australia playing to full capacity venues, slammed shows in all around Europe and endless clubs in the UK such as Fabric, The Egg and Ministry of Sound and he also dropped a very special VIP set at Global Gathering. Men want to be him, woman can't help but dance to him and DJ's & producers are literally queuing up to work with him. The Space Cowboys are happy to bring you this very special, holiday edition of The RIPEcast courtesy of our good friends Slyde [slybeats.com, Fingerlickin]. Featuring their forthcoming release, "Russian Girls Are Dangerous" this delectable, 30-minute RIPEcast-exclusive mix is sure to keep you movin' through those long lines at the airport this weekend, Boys and Girls. Safe Travels and Happy Thanksgiving from The Space Cowboys, Everyone! Check out Slyde on their new website www.slybeats.com! Slyde have been gracing the breaks scene with their unique style of layered beats for almost a decade. 12Tree initially engineered Laidback's ‘Frequency Delinquency', with the latter's belief that “rave is early break beat speeded up” running through its veins. The pair's infatuation with funky, phat and well-produced breaks ensured they gelled perfectly and the album saw spectacular success winning Amazon's Electronic Album of the Year in 2002. Following various accomplishments with the breaks arm of the label Bolshi, the duo were reborn as Slyde. Under the new name and with a new home at Finger Lickin', Slyde has seen incredible singles success with the outrageously funky Slippedy Slide and addictively infectious Krunk. Their last four releases under Finger Lickin' sold over 15,000 records and every Slyde single has reached the Top Five of DJ Magazine's Beats Chart as well as receiving extensive radio play on renowned stations such as XFM and Radio 1. After a chance introduction to Keith Flint of The Prodigy who immediately recognized their talent, the trio collaborated on Clever Brains Fryin'. The duo have performed around the globe and back again at the very best clubs and festivals in all four corners of the world. They have started proceedings at Glastonbury for Annie Nightingale's show on Radio 1, toured Australia, Asia and Canada, played slamming shows at Glade and fundraising parties in San Francisco for Burning Man and have rocked the floor at the world famous Womb Club in Tokoyo. Wherever Slyde perform, it is guaranteed they will smash up the dance floor. Slyde's discerning conception of break beats has resulted in the album ‘Everyone's entitled to our Opinion' that both reflects their core influences and origins and strikes with a sophisticated depth of sound, crossing breaks with melodic tunes and commercial awareness. The album featured a whole host of vocalists as the duo didn't just want make breaks tunes that are easy to mix in a club, but wanted people to feel the lyrics and hear the songs. Today, Slyde are bosses of their own, already successful label, ‘Slybeats'. Ripping through the city's underground like a cybertronic chainsaw and surrounded by urban grooves and industrial beats, Slybeats is set to dominate the musical landscape, flooding the dark streets with the laser lit sounds of the future.
