We are always excited when the world of beverages and the world of music come together to create a unique libation. About two years ago, we featured the Blackened Whiskey, Batch 88 on a podcast. Blackened is a collaborative whiskey made by the band Metallica and, at that time Master Distiller Dave Pickrell. There are different batches and each batch is a blend of whiskeys exposed to music consisting of different playlists selected by members of the band. What we will be trying for this episode is another version of Blackened, but with a few differences. Today we are trying the Blackened Whiskey Batch 112 Cask Strength. This batch features a couple of firsts: it is cask strength and it was created by Master Distiller & Blender Rob Dietrich who took over after the passing of Dave Pickrell. Rob also picked the playlist that it was exposed to using their proprietary Black Noise sonic-enhancement process. What did we think? What do you think? "Celebrating Africa is celebrating humanity." So says South African rapper, dancer, author, teacher, and activist Emile Jansen. Emile's story highlights the power of reaching high and creating an impact by staying grounded in yourself, your vision, your people, and the strings that run between all of us - even across countries and generations. You can pre-order his book "Reconnect the String" here. Emile YX? started b-boying (breakdancing) in 1982 & thus seen as a pioneer of South African Hip Hop. He founded Black Noise Hip Hop Group in 1988 and Heal the Hood Project in 1998, which won the Best Hip Hop Organization in 2010. As a qualified school teacher, he brought education into South African Hip Hop while also creating events like African Hip Hop Indaba, Battle of the Year South Africa, Shut Up Just Dance, African Battle Cry, Cape Flats Uprising, Surf Day, Up The Rock, Black Noise Anniversary and Freestyle Session. Emile was part of the 1997 South African break-dance team that won 3rd at the World Champs, Battle Of The Year. He has helped raise funds for more than 200 artists to travel to international events. He has recorded and released 13 albums with Black Noise, 12 solo Emile YX? Albums, 1 Afrikaaps soundtrack, featured on 9 compilation albums, 7 Heal the Hood compilation albums, and helped 6 local artists release their solo albums. He has written and performed in award winning plays like Afrikaaps, Ons Bou, Mixing It Up, Break & Stompie. He created South Africa's first Hip Hop magazine “Da Juice” and wrote 14 books. He recently co-edited Neva Again with UCLA Professor H.Samy Alim & South African Professors Dr. Adam Haupt & Dr. Quentin Williams. He also initiated 3 books for Rhymes, Articles, Poetry, Short Stories and Sketches called R.A.P.S.S. He has taught & spoken at UCLA, Stanford, Harvard, University of San Francisco, Duke, NYC, Washington State University, Sacramento Teachers College, Trinity University, Gothenberg University, University of Cape Town & University of the Western Cape.   Emile was recently inducted into the South African Hip Hop Museums Hall Of Fame. He received his Ph.D in History at the University of Wisconsin, and his current studies focus on social movements, urban culture, African American music, inequality, the politics of popular culture, and Whiteness Studies. Lipsitz has authored numerous books including The Possessive Investment in Whiteness, How Racism Takes Place, Midnight at the Barrelhouse, Footsteps in the Dark, A Life in the Struggle, and Time Passages. Lipsitz also co-authored The Fierce Urgency of Now: Improvisation, Rights and the Ethics of Co-Creation. He serves as a Chairman of the Board of Directors of the African American Policy Forum and is a member of the Board of Directors of the National Fair Housing Alliance. This podcast is the panel discussion titled "Free Speech, Censorship and Protest”, that was held at the 13th annual Trinity International Hip Hop Festival at Trinity College, in Hartford, Connecticut. The discussion addressed issues of censorship and free speech in hip hop, in both China and South Africa. The artists discussed their own careers in hip hop, and hip hop culture in their countries. The panel featured  MC Puos, a Chinese artist based in Shanghai. He is a co-founder of Bang, China's 1st hip hop magazine, and a founding member of the hip hop collective DDM. He also launched a startup education technology company to promote hip hop culture in China, and recently released a documentary on hip hop in China. Dana Burton (@DetroitShowtyme), an American artist based in Shanghai. After leaving Detroit for China, he became involved in the hip hop scene in China and created Iron Mike, a national rap battle that takes place in China. Emile YX (@EmileYX), a South African artist based in Cape Town. He is a member of the pioneering hip hop group Black Noise, and is the founder of the hip hop based community organization Heal the Hood. When Grant’s fresh Moods & Grooves label began raising more than a few eyebrows with its catalog of releases by many of Detroit’s best house producers, few knew that he has been a key figure in the Motor City’s early to mid-‘80s electronic dance scene as a talented DJ. Grant is one of the few Detroit DJs who plays complete deep house/house or techno sets as well as a mixture. While traveling throughout Europe Grant earned the distinction as being the first American DJ to have a residency at Tresor Club in Berlin. Grant’s musical career began at an early age, influenced by Detroit’s fledging music scene and his uncle, the general manager at a local R&B/dance radio station, WKWM. By 1980, the young Grant had joined a DJ collective known as Men of Music while becoming close friends with schoolmate Blake Baxter. Baxter showed Grant the art of beat mixing while the two made mix tapes after school, and Grant eventually joined Baxter’s DJ group, The Beat Sound Company. A few years later in 1983, Grant was scoring club residencies in Detroit alongside legends such as Ken Collier and also managed to make appearances on The Scene, a video dance show on WGPR alongside even more local DJs such as Jeff Mills. During this mid-‘80s era, Grant’s reputation as one of the city’s top DJs led to eventual friendships and partnerships with many of that eras other top DJs, most notably Eddie Fowlkes, Derrick May, and Juan Atkins. During the summer of 1985, he became a member of Detroit’s first radio mix show, “Street Beat,” where the foundation for what would later become early Detroit techno was ultimately formed. Prior to the Street Beat show, Grant made a commitment to join the military not knowing what doors would eventually open. During this time in the military, he continued to DJ on the base and in Seattle, where he introduced the sounds of Detroit techno to the unsuspecting West Coast. Following his time in the military, Grant then studied telecommunications in Chicago and began his career in this same field, while occasionally returning to his hometown for the occasional performance. In the late ‘90s, Grant planned his return, beginning with a recording as Black Noise on Metroplex Records, titled “Nature of the Beast.” Rather than just DJ and produce tracks, he went to the lengths of starting his own label, Moods & Grooves, and began releasing the work of his peers as well as his own. By mid-2000, the label had received substantial acclaim – including a high-profile appearance by Grant at the landmark Detroit Electronic Music Festival. In 2001 Grant launched the techno based label End to End and urban sounding Afrosyntrix. Additionally, he’s remixed the Detroit classic “Sharevari,” been selected to perform at Midem’s Electronic Showcase, selected and participated in DEMF/Movement, and included in the “Techno – Detroit’s Gift To the World” exhibit at the Detroit Historical Museum.

This week our old pal, Plaza de Funk, is back on The RIPEcast with this live recording of his set from Seismic's After The Love party on September 24th at Mighty in San Francisco. Plaza De Funk has been a staple in the dance community for the past 5 years and it looks like nothing will slow his way to the top of the music world. Since moving to London in '05, he has released award-winning records receiving huge support from the likes of Fatboy Slim, Elite Force, Plump DJs, Rico Tubbs & Black Noise. ‘Got The Funk’ on West Records and ‘Back Home’ EP on Mantra Breaks both received the ‘Sureplayer’ status in DJ Mag, his ‘Do It’ record was licensed on the recent Global Underground mix by the Plump DJs & the track ‘Push ‘n’ Pull' was played several time on Radio 1 by Annie Mac & Annie Nightingale as well as getting ‘Single of the Month’ in IDJ. The Italian doesn’t quite stop there though. In '08 he was nominated for 2 of the categories at the Breakspoll awards; Breakthrough Producer and Breakthrough DJ. Speaker Tricia Rose, Brown professor and chair of Africana Studies and author of "Hip Hop Wars: What We Talk About When We Talk About Hip Hop--and Why It Matters," is primarily interested in African-American culture and the social and political significance of its creation, dissemination and evaluation. She is also interested in gender issues and the complex ways that sexuality and gender shape and reflect both the concerns of African-Americans and the circumstances they face in modern American life. Prof. Rose specializes in 20th century African-American culture and politics, social thought, popular culture and gender issues. She is the author of "Black Noise: Rap Music and Black Culture in Contemporary America" (1994) and "Longing to Tell: Black Women Talk About Sexuality and Intimacy" (2003). "Black Noise" won several awards including an American Book Award from the Before Columbus Foundation. She has been awarded such prestigious fellowships as the Princeton University's Afro-American Rockefeller Postdoctoral Fellowship and the American Association of University Women Fellowship. The Invitational Lecture in the Humanities is an annual event in which a prominent member of the Brown University faculty considers pressing issues in the humanities, issues of importance to scholarship and to the world at large. This occasion gives the university and the community an opportunity to learn from our most distinguished colleagues, many of whom have more regular opportunities to speak off campus than at Brown.

(Minimal Techno)Hey all.  I just realized that Pantha du Prince and Noah Lennox (Panda Bear) released a music video to their single Stick to My Side.  It's not the greatest video. In fact I was a little disappointed, but it's not bad either. It's just... really weird. But maybe all you weirdo's out there will like it a little more.  It's a great song by Pantha du Prince, featuring Panda Bear (of Animal Collective), and the video actually does capture the essence that the song is trying to convey (I think...). Anywho. There is a bigfoot-esque character in here that seems to be like friends to this human and the human lets him stay in his house.
