Episode Proem According to the CDC A disability is any condition of the body or mind (impairment) that makes it more difficult for the person with the condition to do certain activities (activity limitation) and interact with the world around them (participation restrictions). Clearly, it's not a legal definition. I would add self-image, societal perceptions, and environment as components of that definition. Some days, I feel more disabled than other days, and some situations enhance or reduce my abilities. Ability/Disability is a continuum that changes over time and situation. Travel accentuates my abilities - puts them in high relief - for me. Travel requires close examination of my abilities so I can figure out how to manage minute-to-minute - constant decision-making. Travel allows me to stretch my capabilities. It's exhilarating and eventually exhausting. Periodically, I share my travel experiences. Remember the two Camino de Santiago pilgrimages, one in 2019 and the other 2022? In 2023 we explored Costa Rica.  We're planning a music trip to Cuba in four months. Today, I describe our trip to Cloudland Canyon State Park in northwest Georgia. After a zip-lining accident in 2012, when she was 24, Aimee Copeland was hospitalized and diagnosed with a flesh-eating, bacterial infection. They had to amputate both of her hands, right foot, and entire left leg. Before the infection, she was extremely active, rock climbing, backpacking, and trail running. In response to her frustration with wheelchair life, she created the Aimee Copeland Foundation, which raises funds to create opportunities for connecting with the self, the community, and the earth through the provision of a fleet of all-terrain wheelchairs for free use by people with disabilities within select Georgia state parks.  In this podcast episode,

Fifty Key Stage Musicals: The Podcast

CABARET COMPOSER: John Kander LYRICIST: Fred Ebb BOOK: Joe Masteroff SOURCE: Christopher Isherwood's The Berlin Stories (1945) DIRECTOR: Hal Prince CHOREOGRAPHER: Ron Field PRINCIPLE CAST: Bert Convy (Cliff), Joel Grey (Emcee), Jill Hayworth (Sally). Lotte Lenya (Schneider) OPENING DATE: Nov 20, 1966 CLOSING DATE: Sep 06, 1969 PERFORMANCES: 1,165 SYNOPSIS: American Clifford Bradshaw takes up residence in pre-war Berlin. While there he becomes enamored with cabaret singer Sally Bowles, and her divine decadence. As the Nazi's rise to power, Cliff wonders if he must flee Germany or take a stand against the Third Reich. Harold Prince's staging of Cabaret took audiences by surprise as it tossed aside all manner of theatrical conventions, reflecting the audience back at itself through a large mirror and challenging them with diegetic and nondiegetic song and dance routines. Taboo subject matter including queerness, sex, antisemitism, abortion, and the Holocaust came to the forefront of a Broadway musical for the first time. Bruce Kimmel explores the impact of the various elements that made Cabaret a seismic event. From the authentic performances of Lotte Lenya and Jill Haworth to the Weimar infused score of John Kander and Fred Ebb, as well as the star-making turn of Joel Grey, each element of this groundbreaking musical is explored to underline its collective power. Bruce Kimmel is a legendary Grammy-nominated producer of theatre music on CD, having produced over 180 albums, including Broadway and off-Broadway cast albums, singers, and concept recordings. He is also an award-winning songwriter and the author of twenty-one books. Bruce Kimmel is probably the most popular returning guest on The Partridge Family television series. He made an immediate impact with the viewers and struck an instant chemistry with David Cassidy, Shirley Jones and Susan Dey. In this special episode, Bruce recalls how the cast made him feel like one of the family, his friendship with David and speaks movingly about the man he knew. Bruce is a renowned film and stage director, author, composer, actor, songwriter and a Grammy-nominated music producer. He has one of the longest-running daily blogs which celebrates 20 years this November. He wrote and directed The First Nudie Musical, has produced solo albums for Helen Reddy, Petula Clark and worked with Lauren Bacall, and Dorothy Loudon who starred alongside David in his first short lived Broadway show, The Fig Leaves Are Falling in 1969. Bruce has produced and hosted a monthly cabaret series, Kritzerland, for more than a decade which he moved online during the past year winning critical acclaim. He reflects today on his influences as a boy, early auditions, why he always has to be creative, his approach to directing, and admits he has never had a holiday in 35 years. He opens up about his depression and the epiphany which pulled him back from the brink. When we caught up, Bruce had just finished the first night of Motel 66, a collection of one-act plays, one of which he had directed, all set in motel courtyards along the historic Route 66. "The heat is on" as hosts Bobby and Kristina discuss 1986's Smile on episode six of My Favorite Flop.   ABOUT SMILE Based on the 1975 movie of the same name, Smile is a satirical portrait of small-town America that follows the intrigue and exploits onstage and behind-the-scenes as Santa Rosa, California plays host to the Young American Miss Pageant. The musical features a book and lyrics by Howard Ashman with music by Marvin Hamlisch. Smile finally came to Broadway in 1986 after several failed attempts earlier in the decade, with various creative forces attached to the project. Carolyn Leigh, who had initially written the lyrics to the first two version of the show, passed away shortly after a workshop was held in 1983, leading to Howard Ashman's eventual involvement. Only one song from those early versions remains, the title song, though it features a new set of lyrics written by Ashman. The Broadway production closed after just 48 performances and is considered a "lost" musical because no official cast recording was ever made. However, Ashman and Hamlisch revised the show for stock productions, and a demo CD by featuring members of the original cast was created to use for licensing. Some of the songs have been recorded over the years, most notably by Broadway record producer Bruce Kimmel, in an attempt to preserve some of the fantastic material written for the show. A private industry reading of the show took place in 2010, though nothing further came from it, and a reunion concert was presented in 2014 at 54 Below with members of the original cast.   Original Broadway Cast Marsha Waterbury as Brenda DiCarlo Freelander Jeff McCarthy as Big Bob Freelander Jodi Benson as Doria Hudson Anne Marie Bobby as Robin Gibson Tia Riebling as Shawn Christianson Cheryl-Ann Rossi as Maria Gonzales Michael O'Gorman as Tommy French Tommy Daggett as Little Bob Freelander Dick Patterson as Ted Farley Mana Allen as Patti-Lynn Bird Andrew Cassese as Freddy Veanne Cox as Sandra-Kay Mcaffee Donna Marie Elio as Gina Minelli Laura Gardner as Robin's Mom Lauren Goler as Valerie Sherman Valerie Lau-Kee as Linda Lee Andrea Leigh-Smith as Debralee Davis Mia Malm as Kate Gardner Cindy Oakes as Connie-Sue Whipple Nikki Rene as Cookie Wilson Julie Tussey as Kimberly Lyons Renée Veneziale as Dana Simpson Deanna D. Notes: Maybe it is just a trick of the light, but who knows?  The stories are fun, in any case. Kristi Petersen Schoonover has been going to WDW since the 1970s, and her favorite ride of all time was If You Had Wings—but since that’s long gone, the Haunted Mansion, Big Thunder Mountain, and the Peoplemover top her list. Her collection, Skeletons in the Swimmin’ Hole, is a collection of ghost stories set in Disney Parks. Her novel, Bad Apple, was nominated for a Pushcart Prize in December 2012, and her fiction has appeared in many magazines and anthologies. She lives in the Connecticut woods with her husband, occult specialist Nathan Schoonover, and still sleeps with the lights on. www.kristipetersenschoonover.com ------ Thrill Ride, by Bruce Kimmel: http://a.co/bdCwtlc Escape from Tomorrow (all formats): http://a.co/gv2D4Yx Dark Discussions podcast episodes on Escape from Tomorrow:              Part 1: http://www.darkdiscussions.com/Pages/podcast_144.html             Part 2: http://www.darkdiscussions.com/Pages/podcast_145.html Skeletons in the Swimmin’ Hole: Tales from Haunted Disney World: http://amzn.to/SkeletonsPrint 5 Disneyland Ghosts Caught on Video:  --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/daves-disney-view/message
