Jim Stevens has been a music fan all his life specifically David Cassidy's vocals with The Partridge Family. The Beatles were an early influence for him and music has helped him in recent years on a journey of self-discovery. Brad Kyle is a music enthusiast whose professional career in radio started in 1975 the summer he met David Cassidy. Their interview for his university radio station in Houston, Texas, turned out to be a conversation which allowed David to be relaxed, amusing and honest about his solo career as he embarked on a new career path. Brad currently provides content on Front Row & Backstage | Brad Kyle | Substack where you will find his full archive of published articles about music and sport. We talk about his meeting with David, observations of his career, the burden of being marketed to a teenage market, where he places David in the history of American music and his connection with Judy Garland and The Sex Pistols.

Las Vegas Entertainer Michael La Rocca reveals the majority of things he has done in his life and career lead back to David Cassidy. Michael started his career in 1970 in a local production of The Wizard of Oz in Buffalo, New York. He was King of the Flying Monkeys. The film had a massive impact on his life. He appeared in his first professional production three years later when still only 14, and received five-star acclaim starring in a six-year run of his super-successful nightclub show Bravo Broadway. He has hosted several CBS telecasts of the Miss America State Pageant, and took his one-man show to Las Vegas to critical acclaim. His theatrical credits include starring roles in many musicals including Hello Dolly!, Oklahoma, Grease, Sweet Charity and Godspell. He also created several popular musical reviews. Michael is a Minister with the Universal Life Church and calls himself the Tin Man as a result of the numerous spinal surgeries he has undergone. Join me to celebrate the 50th episode with a very special guest. Ron Hicklin is the unknown singer behind the backing vocals of hundreds of recording artists. His vocal group, The Ron Hicklin Singers, became the “go to” backing vocalists for the top groups and solo artists, and were the real singers behind the background vocals of David Cassidy and The Partridge Family. Ron rarely gives interviews, but today shares with me some of the highlights of his career working with some of the biggest stars on the planet from Elvis to The Three Tenors. He was also the voice of Alvin in The Chipmunks, and a ghost singer for The Monkees. He describes himself as a “hidden star” whose voice has featured on around 100 number one hits; up to 400 movies, television themes including Happy Days, Laverne & Shirley, Batman, Flipper, plus radio and tv commercials. Ron kept detailed notes about every session over the 4 year run of the Partridge Family television series, a breakdown of which can be found on the website: The PF Recording Sessions! (cmongethappy.com)  As a youngster he loved singing, joined a local singing group and formed his own group when 11 years old. Ron graduated from Renton High School in Washington and had planned on becoming a doctor studying at the University of Washington, but his first love music was pulling him back. At 19 he and his group signed with Capitol Records but realised he did not want to be a star and abandoned that for studio work. In the 1980s, Ron created Killer Music to write, perform and produce custom commercials which led to the company becoming the best in the business. This led to the creation of a catalogue music production company, Killer Tracks, which he again took to the top of the charts.

Liza Coppola learned to play the guitar at the age of 13, inspired by David Cassidy and the music of The Partridge Family. She explored her love of music and singing, over the years building her confidence and skills to perform in public. She has been singing and playing her favourite songs from the soundtrack of her life in restaurants and coffee shops for the past 15 years. Her opening number, of course, is C'mon Get Happy. This week my special guest is talking about his amazing life journey which took him from being a songwriter for The Partridge Family to discovering, producing and managing Bruce Springsteen. Mike Appel always wanted to be a songwriter and musician starting his career in the Brill Building which was the heartbeat of the music industry in New York. Born in Flushing, Queens, he was a member of groups in the 1950s and 1960s including The Balloon Farm, co-writing their 1967 hit, A Question of Temperature. Mike worked with song writing duos including Leiber & Stoller, Hugo & Luigi. With his writing partner Jim Cretecos, five songs they penned together were recorded by The Partridge Family – the million seller Doesn't Somebody Want To Be Wanted along with I Can Feel Your Heartbeat, Somebody Wants To Love You, Rainmaker and Umbrella Man. Mike went on to discover and manage Bruce Springsteen. He produced Springsteen's first two albums and co-produced Springsteen's third and breakthrough album, Born To Run. In our conversation Mike talks about the skills he has learnt from other songwriters, his own writing technique, the first meeting of songwriters at the pilot showing of The Partridge Family, the legacy of that music, and how he would have managed David Cassidy. Ryan Roxie is one of the world's greatest guitarists and performed on stage with the best. Known as a solo artist and singer/songwriter he is also recognised for his guitar work and collaborations with Alice Cooper, Casablanca and Slash's Snakepit. He tells everyone he was inspired to play the guitar by Keith – not Richards but Partridge. And David Cassidy played a key role in his successful career. He started working with Alice in 1996 and collaborated with him on several albums including Dirty Diamonds, The Eyes of Alice Cooper and Dragontown. He rejoined the band in 2012. Roxie spent 2 years recording with Slash's Snakepit Ain't Life Grand, but admits “in reality, I always wanted to be Keith Partridge”. Roxie is a huge fan of British Glam Rock with Sweet, T Rex, Mott the Hoople among his favourite groups. Doug Voet has an illustrious stage career appearing in numerous productions. Singer, actor, producer, horse lover and close friend of David's, they met in 1983 when David took over the lead role on Broadway in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Doug taught David the role and their friendship grew. Some years later David, who was starring in EFX in Las Vegas, offered Doug a new direction in his career inviting him to produce a new show, At The Copa, he had created. They also worked together on The Rat Pack Is Back and Doug went on to be David's tour manager on his US and UK tours. Barb Collentine has been a David Cassidy fan for more than half a century and is President of the I Think I Love You Animal Foundation established in his memory. A retired high school English teacher, Barb taught for 27 years in Bergen County, New Jersey, about 40 minutes from West Orange, David's childhood home. She created and runs the David Cassidy Virtual Fan Club believed to be the only one of its kind. A former foster mother of about 11 children, Barb admits they were schooled on David Cassidy and The Partridge Family with PF sing-alongs to the CDs whenever they were in the car. Marlene Kern Fischer is a writer, blogger, mother of 3 and self-confessed food shopper extraordinaire. Marlene has been a lifelong David fan, meeting him on her 30th birthday after a performance of Blood Brothers on Broadway. David always had a passion for horses and was regarded by this week's guest, veteran horse trainer Gary Contessa as “the consummate student of pedigrees.” Gary was a close friend for decades and trained most of David's horses. As a boy David would watch his cowboy hero Roy Rogers on television and used his signature song title Happy Trails as his sign-off on letters and album liner notes. One of his favourite movies was The Homestretch starring Maureen O'Hara. He also narrated seven stories from the popular children's adventure series, Billy and Blaze, about a boy and his pony. David was a long-time breeder within the New York programme. Sweet Vendetta was one of a handful of horses which put him in the winners' circle. His thoroughbreds were trained by Gary who has more than 2,300 winners in his portfolio. Gary was NYRA's leading trainer from 2006-2009. In 2007 he set a record with 159 NYRA wins and was twice Trainer of the Year. Gary shares how he worked his way up the ladder from walking and grooming horses to become a leading trainer in New York. He reveals his greatest moments as a trainer, how he overcomes his fears and the bond he shared with David. Jon Provost was at High School with David Cassidy and is best known for his role as Timmy Martin in the legendary television series, Lassie, a role he played for seven years. He got his first break at the age of 2 playing Jane Wyman's son in So Big, and we talk about the impact of being a child star. Jon went on to play the son of Bing Crosby and Grace Kelly in the Country Girl; worked alongside Clint Eastwood and Kurt Russell, Robert Redford and Natalie Wood. Robyn Hadden was personal assistant to David Cassidy when he took over the starring role in EFX, the biggest show in Las Vegas in 1996. David replaced Michael Crawford who had hand-picked Robyn to be his personal assistant. She continued working in that role with David throughout his time in Vegas where he also was behind successful productions, At The Copa and The Rat Pack Is Back. When David returned to concerts, Robyn toured both the United States and the UK with him making lifelong friendships with many fans. Robyn had planned to be a pharmacist and explains her journey into the world of entertainment, later working in Special Events. She earned her Certified Special Events Professional (CSEP) designation in 2000 and her Masters Degree from the University of Nevada in 2005. She served as Director of Alumni & College Relations at the UNLV College of Hospitality and continued her career at the Ohio State University where she was Associate Director (Special Events).   In our amusing and, at times, emotional conversation, Robyn shares anecdotes from her years knowing David and explains why at 40 she decided to follow her dream of becoming a mother through IVF and an anonymous donor. Jay Gruska is a songwriter, composer and producer with an impressive portfolio. He has been responsible for some of the best loved themes for film, and television including Charmed and Supernatural. He received an Emmy nomination for his soundtrack to the television series, Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman. Jay wrote for, and with, David Cassidy. He explains David's contribution to I Never Saw You Coming written by Jay, Billy Mumy and David Jolliffe which appeared on David's Getting It In the Street album. Jay worked on the album, and they later co-wrote the theme for the Man Undercover television series in which David starred. In 2009, Jay was composer, co-songwriter and music producer on the popular but short-lived sitcom created by David's half-brother Shaun, Ruby and The Rockits. Ken Owen spent almost 20 years as a television news reporter and anchor. In 1994 he interviewed David via satellite when working at WISH (CBS) in Indianapolis, and speaks about the importance of that encounter. As a small girl she was influenced by the music of The Partridge Family and his screen presence in the role of Keith in the television series, writing song lyrics. Her novel is the story of teen idol Chris Lassiter who meets long time loyal fan, Karen O'Neill, when he launches a career comeback. As their worlds collide it tells the story of their relationship, exposing old wounds of loss, love, health, emotional and religious issues. The story also examines why holding onto your dream is important and leaves readers with a huge cliffhanger. Richie Furay is a pioneer of Californian country rock. His work was a major influence on The Eagles. Richie started Buffalo Springfield with Neil Young and Stephen Stills. He later formed Poco and the Souther-Hillman-Furay band. He explains where his writing inspiration comes from, how Ricky Nelson influenced his career path and why he feels Poco never got the recognition they deserved. He recalls how he met David Cassidy who he considers creative, talented and underrated, inviting David to sing backing harmonies on three tracks on his Dance A Little Light album – Yesterday's Gone, Stand Your Guard and Your Friends. He talks about their friendship and his own composition For Someone I Love which David reworked and appears on his concept album, The Higher They Climb as Love in Bloom. Richie explains how his focus moved from music to his family when he realised he needed God in his life, going on to work as a pastor in Colorado for more than three decades. We talk about how he calls on his faith at difficult times in his life. Richie has released 50th Anniversary Return To The Troubadour as a double CD. The first is called Still Deliverin' and on the second, Richie plays the complete Poco album from start to finish – Deliverin' Again. Bruce Kimmel is probably the most popular returning guest on The Partridge Family television series. He made an immediate impact with the viewers and struck an instant chemistry with David Cassidy, Shirley Jones and Susan Dey. In this special episode, Bruce recalls how the cast made him feel like one of the family, his friendship with David and speaks movingly about the man he knew. Bruce is a renowned film and stage director, author, composer, actor, songwriter and a Grammy-nominated music producer. He has one of the longest-running daily blogs which celebrates 20 years this November. He wrote and directed The First Nudie Musical, has produced solo albums for Helen Reddy, Petula Clark and worked with Lauren Bacall, and Dorothy Loudon who starred alongside David in his first short lived Broadway show, The Fig Leaves Are Falling in 1969. Tony Mann is a musician, author, costume designer, curator, film maker, talent co-ordinator, music producer and lifelong David Cassidy fan. Born and raised in New York, Tony has been at the cutting edge of the music scene all his life. He told me he could talk a blue streak about David from the experience of seeing him at Madison Square Garden in 1972, getting to know him, and being present at his final show at BB Kings in 2017. Tony is a co-author of Lost Rockers Broken Crashed Careers and did a lot of work on New York Rock Velvet Underground. He talks about the respect musicians such as David Bowie and Lou Reed had for David and the project they had in mind for David which never happened. He also reflects on how David almost joined a short-lived rock band; his desire to be recognised as a serious musician; why his so far unreleased back catalogue is important to David's artistic legacy and his disappointment over why people put boundaries around his music. My very special guest is American music legend, Bobby Rydell, one of the first teenage idols. Bobby's first hit Kissin' Time made him a household name in 1959. This was followed by Wild One, Forget Him and Volare among other hits which secured an image which won millions of hearts around the world. Bobby, who recently turned 79, explains in our brutally honest conversation, that he always wanted to be recognised as more than a teenage idol, and he achieved that. He still tours today with his childhood friend Frankie Avalon and another celebrated teen star, Fabian as The Golden Boys. He has enjoyed more than six decades of success. Frank Sinatra said he was his favourite singer and Bobby shares amusing anecdotes from his glittering career. Rob Preuss has enjoyed a remarkable career which started at the age of 5 when he discovered the music of The Partridge Family. He became obsessed with the show, making scrapbooks which he has kept for 50 years. At the same time, he was learning classical piano and taught himself how to play The Entertainer. His passion for music led him to joining his first band at the age of 10. He later played with The Spoons and Honeymoon Suite, but in what he describes a “lightbulb” moment switched from rock bands to playing keyboards in hit musicals including Cats, Phantom of the Opera, Miss Saigon and later working with Benny and Bjorn of Abba on the successful musical Mamma Mia for 15 years. He was musical director of the Broadway production. Rob taught actor Rami Malek how to play the piano for his role as Freddie Mercury in the movie, Bohemian Rhapsody. Rob explains the influence David Cassidy had on his career, why his music is so important, contemplates why he found David's death so sad and how our formative years make us the people we become. Hal Eisenberg and his Beach Boys tribute band opened for David in Atlanta in 2003, where he observed close up the impact of being a teenage idol appeared to have on David. He shares his thoughts on how David was labelled and the impact that had on his career. Hal offers an analysis on the price of fame and explains why David's album The Higher They Climb needs to be recognised more as a template for what he was capable of achieving musically. “If you don't know of his music outside of I Think I Love You, you really do need to go deeper into his catalogue – You will say ‘I had no idea'. He was a lot more than the façade that a lot of people saw…..musicians regarded him as a very talented musician,” Hal told me. He offers his analysis of the music industry today, how Felix Cavaliere and Eric Carmen influenced his career and why he is looking forward to getting back on stage this summer with Brotherhood, his tribute band to the Doobie Brothers.

Mike Ragogna admits he would never have had a music career had it not been for David Cassidy. A young obsession with The Partridge Family and especially the music, led to him pursuing a career as a singer-songwriter working with producers Terry Cashman and Tommy West. A number of their songs appear on The Partridge Family catalogue. Born in New York, Mike's impressive and varied resume includes working for record labels EMI, Universal, BMG and Razor & Tie producing compilations and reissues for hundreds of artists. As compilations producer at Razor & Tie who reissued The Partridge Family albums on CD, he assembled a David Cassidy collection of his RCA material in 1996, and takes us through the process. Nina Myskow was the first woman editor of Jackie magazine – a teenage girl's best friend – which held the hand of its readers as they steered their way into life as a teenager. Nina was at the cutting edge of pop culture in the 1970s, playing a key role with innovative ideas which took sales up to one million copies a week. She later went onto become the “Queen of Pop” in Fleet Street, writing for leading national daily newspapers. She has worked in radio and television, danced with Yoko Ono until dawn in New York, played tennis with Elton John, partied with Freddie Mercury and reduced Princess Diana to fits of laughter. In our conversation she shares some of these memories, talks about her friendship with Elton John and why Your Song means so much to her. Nina recalls meeting David Cassidy at the height of his fame, sharing his reaction when, many years later, she played him a recording he made for a giveaway flexi disc in Jackie. She explains why we need idols, who her first idol was, the responsibility she felt as a magazine editor and why Jackie was important to actress Emma Thompson. We also hear from Oli Speer whose father John wrote articles for more than 20 years for the magazine. He shares his father's remarkable story.

  David Hamilton is one of Britain's best loved broadcasters who has been at the cutting edge of entertainment for more than 60 years. Legendary singer-songwriter and producer Felix Cavaliere formed The Young Rascals in 1965 and enjoyed a string of hits including Groovin', Good Lovin' and A Beautiful Morning – music which became the soundtrack for millions of lives. Born in Pelham, New York, his father wanted him to be a doctor; his mother wanted him to be a classical pianist. He once said: “music heals, so maybe that's what I should do". Felix was a member of Joey Dee and the Starliters, best known for their hit Peppermint Twist, before he formed his own group, which later changed their name to The Rascals. They went on to land a number of accolades including 10 top 20 singles, 4 number one hits, six top 20 albums, a Grammy nomination and four Hall of Fame inductions. David recorded two of his songs, How Can I Be Sure, a top 4 hit in the United States for The Young Rascals and a number one triumph for David in the United Kingdom, and Lonely Too Long. David's recordings coincided with the acquisition by his then-producer Wes Farrell of the entire Rascals' song catalogue. From his home in Nashville, Felix talks to me about how The Beatles were his inspiration; shares his observations of the pressures of stardom; the responsibility songwriters have; David's interpretation of his work and why more people should be aware of David's talent.

Cherish is my first book, a compilation of fans' memories about what it means to be a David Cassidy fan. Memories and tributes are from around the world as fans, friends, former colleagues and band-mates share their thoughts on how David influenced them in many different ways, amusing anecdotes and examples of his kindness. I invited fans to contribute their memories and was overwhelmed at the response which came through in the form of essays, short stories, poetry, diary entries, photographs and open letters to him. This week on The David Cassidy Connections podcast we make a  special visit to a place which forms part of David's legacy. Located less than 15 miles from Manhatten, West Orange offers a rich history. The first settlers landed in 1666 at what is now Newark Bay. Town historian, Joseph Fagan, whose family roots go back more than 150 years in the town, gives a tour of the places where David would have played as a young boy, shares photographs which he has uncovered of David's mother, Evelyn, when she was at school, tells the story of the first settlers and the 9/11 Memorial at Eagle Rock which looks across to the New York skyline. West Orange is where David spent his formative years and years later co-wrote with Kim Carnes and Dave Ellingson, Can't Go Home Again where David brought the musical changes. As a young girl growing up in Liverpool, Ruth McCartney, would sit around the kitchen table with her mother, Angie, helping to deal with millions of fan mail for The Beatles – and earn a little bit of pocket money. It was a matter of keeping it in the family when Paul McCartney is your stepbrother. Ruth was four years old when she found herself with a front row seat to Beatlemania. Her mother had married Paul's father, Jim, after a short courtship in 1964, and it was just another day when John Lennon would come over to stay or Jimi Hendrix arrive unannounced on the doorstep. Today, Ruth runs creative digital agency McCartney Multimedia with her husband Martin and mother, Angie. Their first client was David Cassidy who was a close friend - she set up and ran his first website. She talks passionately about their friendship which started when they met in an elevator and tells how she immediately took him home to meet her mother. Ruth shares wonderful memories of their time together and how David reacted when - out of the blue - Paul phoned him in London. Although not having direct dialect coaching, when David was preparing for his acclaimed role in Blood Brothers, he would call Ruth adopting a Liverpudlian accent. You will often have seen David wearing a sweat shirt carrying the name – John Jay College of Criminal Justice. The college was the venue for his only press conference ahead of the sell-out concert at Madison Square Garden in March 1972. Pat Ravalgi was Editor of The Individualist literary magazine and music editor of the LEX newspaper at the college – part of the City University of New York system – in the early 1970s. She was the driving force behind the press conference and worked closely with David's publicists and record company representatives – especially those at RCA – to draw attention to David to an older audience as he pursued his solo career. In a newspaper article in 1974, Pat observed: “No artist can go wrong when his direction comes from his own audience. Because the artist and audience are all that really does matter.” After graduation, Pat was a publicist at Levinson Associates in New York where her clients included Shaun Cassidy and his record producer Michael Lloyd. After working in public relations, Pat received her Masters Degree in International Relations from New York University. She spent the next 30 years as a professional staff member in the U.S. House of Representatives and an Intelligence Officer with several agencies within the U.S. government. In our conversation Pat talks about how, as an ambitious student, she managed to secure an interview with David and the real story behind that t-shirt. 

Jim Salamanis has been a decades long fan and has one of the biggest single collections of David Cassidy and Partridge Family memorabilia in the world. He firmly believes David's solo back catalogue should be remastered and released with previously unheard demos, rarities, alternate versions, concert rehearsals, live recordings and bonus tracks for any configuration in a deluxe boxset. Jim also leads the battle cry for a deluxe boxset of The Partridge Family music, again adding previously unreleased tracks and alternate versions of their vast catalogue for a similar collection presentation. In our conversation he offers a passionate, calm and measured argument explaining why the music is so important to David's legacy and why the search for previously unseen vintage concert footage goes on. Dr. Haley Gienow-McConnell is a cultural historian from Ontario, Canada. A self-described “second generation” David Cassidy fan, Dr. Gienow-McConnell became a fan in the 2000s, long after his heyday in the 1970s. My guest is devoted fan, Clea Mylonas, who won a competition in 1974 to meet David in California. She had to wait until the spring of 1975 to fulfil her ambition, meeting him at the recording studio where he was working with Bruce Johnston of the Beach Boys making his first RCA album, The Higher They Climb. Clea, who was 22 when she won the competition, raised an outstanding £500 to land the first prize. The competition in aid of The Friends of the Children Society, involved following clues around London. “I worked really hard for it,” she explained. “Meeting David was the highlight of my life. He never shattered my dream.” Clea's story is published in my book, Cherish David Cassidy A Legacy of Love, but here she speaks with emotion and enthusiasm about what being a fan means to her, how nervous she was meeting him, recalls the moment she watched David walking towards her and why she believes he is now at peace.

Lucie Fitchett and Victoria Willing have been friends since their schooldays and in 2010 wrote a successful play based around their teenage love for David Cassidy. They are now planning to rework the play. Could It be Forever? was given its premiere at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival winning 5 star reviews. David was so inspired by their work, he wrote to them saying he was “honoured” to be the subject of their theatrical production. The original play is based around the reunion of six schoolfriends who revisit what life was like when David visited London in the 1970s, and examine how they and their own lives have changed over the years. Lucie and Victoria are revisiting their initial idea and reworking the script. In an exclusive interview with me, they are inviting fans to share their memories, explain what David represented to them then and now, what life is like today for women in their 60s revisiting their early teens, and how they have changed. In this episode they bounce ideas around, speak openly about the feelings they had for David, what he represented, the importance of friendships through fan worship, and explain why they would like the input from fans who also experienced first-hand Cassidymania in the 1970s. “We want to bring it back because there is an important story to be told,” they told me. “It's more about the fans, how they project onto him feelings, how he satisfies those feelings, and what it means years later.” Victoria is an actress and writer. Sharron Liddle has been a David Cassidy fan since the 1970s and is the driving force behind a happy trail of memorials around London which pay tribute to his legacy. Sharron runs the David Cassidy Group of Great Britain on Facebook, which strives to ensure his name and contribution to the musical and cultural fabric of the UK is never forgotten. Their first tribute was a plaque outside the stage door at the Phoenix Theatre where he starred in Willy Russell's Blood Brothers. It was unveiled by radio presenter, Mike Read in September 2018. Other tributes at the time included a star in the Hall of Fame at the Bristol Hippodrome where David starred in Blood Brothers with Clodagh Rogers. In our conversation, Sharron talks about the legacy trail which has evolved which also includes a plaque within the Phoenix Garden opposite the theatre which carries the symbolic words “Dreams, Wishes and Happy Trails”, a Make a Wish Charity virtual wall in his memory, a bench plaque in Hammersmith Park, and a tribute of remembrance at St Giles Church next to the Phoenix. Other memorials have been established at Wembley's Empire Pool (now Arena) where David sold out a record-breaking 6 shows in 3 days in 1973; Heathrow Airport on the site of what was the Queen's Building which fans packed onto when he arrived, or left, the UK in the 1970s. Outside of London there are memorials at Nottingham Concert Hall and on the iconic Sheffield Heart of Steel.
