SEUSSICAL COMPOSER: Stephen Flaherty LYRICIST: Lynn Ahrens BOOK: Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty SOURCE: The stories of Dr. Seuss (c. 1950s) DIRECTOR: Rob Marshall CHOREOGRAPHER: Kathleen Marshall PRINCIPLE CAST: Kevin Chamberlain (Horton), Janine LaManna (Gertrude), David Shiner (The Cat in the Hat) OPENING DATE: Nov 30, 2000 CLOSING DATE: May 20, 2001 PERFORMANCES: 198 SYNOPSIS: The wild world of Dr. Seuss comes to life as Seuss' various characters come together to tell the story of Horton, a lonely elephant, and Gertrude McFuzz, a shy bird, as they fall in love with one another. Nathan Brewer argues for Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty's Seussical as a significant show that, despite lackluster reviews and box office sales, went on to find financial success as a staple within community theatre and educational institutions, especially through the work of director Marcia Milgrom Dodge. Seussical's ability to redefine theatrical financial success, and public exposure, after its failure on Broadway, offered shows that were not commercially viable to become regionally successful such as Little Women, The Addams Family, and Be More Chill. Nathan Brewer is a director of theatre, opera, concerts, film, and events. Directing credits include Lincoln Center, The Kennedy Center, Washington National Opera, Park Avenue Armory, Theatreworks/USA, New York Musical Theatre Festival, numerous symphonic and pops concerts, and televised award shows. Nathan is on the musical theatre faculty at The New Studio on Broadway at NYU/Tisch, and The College of New Jersey. He has previously taught at Penn State and Westminster Choir College. Assisting credits include Aladdin (Broadway), and Relatively Speaking (Broadway). Nathan is the Founder & Artistic Director of Recreational Arts, a performing arts educational organization, with programs in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. Stephen Flaherty is the composer of the Broadway musicals Ragtime (Tony, Drama Desk, OCC Awards, two Grammy nominations), Seussical (Grammy, Drama Desk nominations), Once on This Island (Tony nomination, Olivier Award, Best Musical) and Rocky. Additional Broadway includes Chita Rivera: The Dancer's Life (original songs) and Neil Simon's Proposals (incidental music). Stephen has also written four musicals at Lincoln Center Theatre: The Glorious Ones (OCC, Drama Desk nominations), Dessa Rose (OCC, Drama Desk nominations), A Man of No Importance (OCC, Best Musical, Drama Desk nomination) and My Favorite Year. Other theater includes In Your Arms (Old Globe), Little Dancer (Kennedy Center), Lucky Stiff (Playwrights Horizons) and Loving Repeating: A Musical of Gertrude Stein (Chicago's Jefferson Award, Best New Musical.) Film includes Anastasia (two Academy Award and two Golden Globe nominations), the documentary After The Storm and Lucky Stiff. Mr. Flaherty's concert music has premiered at the Hollywood Bowl, Boston's Symphony Hall, Carnegie Hall, the Guggenheim Museum and Symphony Space. This year celebrates Stephen's 32-year collaboration with lyricist-librettist Lynn Ahrens. Stephen and Lynn are members of the Dramatists Guild Council and co- founders of the Dramatists Guild Fellows Program. In 2015 they were inducted into the Theater Hall Of Fame. A MAN OF NO IMPORTANCE". Nikki M. James most famously, originated the role of Nabalungi in the Broadway hit musical, Book of Mormon, for which she won the Tony for Best Featured Actress in a Musical. After her award winning performance, Nikki went on to star as Éponine in the 2014 Broadway revival of Les Misérables. James starred on the Fox series Proven Innocent. James received rave reviews for her starring role as Viveca in Kirsten Child’s musical The Bubbly Black Girl Sheds Her Chameleon Skin in Encores! Off-Center production at City Center. The musical review was an ambitious follow up to Nikki’s portrayal of Portia, Brutus’ proud wife, in The Public Theatre’s extremely press worthy and politically prescient version of Julius Caesar at Shakespeare in the Park in 2017. Nikki reprised her role of Viola in the musical version of Twelfth Night this past summer under the direction of Oskar Eustis at the Delacorte Theatre. Recent notable work in television includes a starring role in CBS’ quirky series Braindead and a recurring guest arc on the hit series The Good Wife, CBS’ Bull, Escape From Dannemora on Showtime and reprised her role of Monica from The Good Wife on the CBS All Access series The Good Fight. Her film credits include: Lucky Stiff and The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby. She has also performed several sold-out, one-woman cabaret shows at popular New York City venues such as 54 Below and Joe’s Pub. No stranger to Broadway, Nikki has starred in productions of All Shook Up and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Other memorable theater productions include; Romeo and Juliet, Caesar and Cleopatra alongside Christopher Plummer, The Wiz, Bernarda Alba, House of Flowers and Preludes. She resides in New York City and holds a BFA in Drama from NYU.

Lynn Ahrens is an American writer and lyricist for musical theatre, television and film. She has collaborated with Stephen Flaherty for many years. She won the Tony Award, Drama Desk Award, and Outer Critics Circle Award for the Broadway musical Ragtime. Together with Flaherty, they have written many musicals, including Lucky Stiff, My Favorite Year, Ragtime, Seussical, A Man of No Importance, Dessa Rose, The Glorious Ones, Rocky, Little Dancer and, recently on Broadway, Anastasia and Once on This Island. She was also nominated for two Academy Awards and two Golden Globe Awards for the animated Twentieth Century Fox film Anastasia. She was a mainstay writer and performer for ABC-TV's Schoolhouse Rock! What I love about Lynn’s lyrics is that they just look/sound so easy. That, of course, is the sign of a true master of any art form, when the work they create looks as if anyone can do it. And there aren’t many people in the world who have ever done it as well as Lynn. That’s why I was thrilled she took a few moments to chat with me about her wordsmith-ing ways and a whole bunch of other stuff like . . . Why NOT being known as a book writer, despite having written the book to a whole bunch of shows, is actually a compliment. How Audra McDonald helped inspire “Daddy’s Son” from Ragtime. What we (including ME!) need to do to encourage more women writers. How she and Stephen Flaherty have kept their collaboration going longer than most marriages. What she wants every young writer to do (which will make this guy really happy). Keep up with me: @KenDavenportBway www.theproducersperspective.com Learn more about your ad choices. www.InspirationwithVal.com Podcast Episode 98 with Rachael Markarian: Summary: Rachael Markarian is an actress & dancer training throughout Boston, New York City, and Los Angeles. Despite being told she would never be a dancer based on a physical disability she was born with, Rachael immersed herself in the performing arts at a very young age. She fine tuned her skills while pursuing her dream to become a triple threat and now is an acclaimed actress and model in Hollywood. About how Rachael Markarian started her life as a dancer: 6:10 Rachael is the youngest in the family with her two elder brothers and was very shy as a child. She used to hide in her mother’s skirt because she was so shy! Her mother took her to dance classes so that she would learn to feel more comfortable with other people. Even though she was born with legs and hips that were completed inverted and needed to wear braces, she attended class - and hated it at first. It was hard, painful, and she had to work harder at it than the rest of the kids. When Rachael was 12 years old, she finally realized that she loved to dance. The power of positive thinking: 11:04 Rachael could have easily chosen not to pursue dancing because of her disability, but she challenged herself to work hard and rise about the situation. She used the power of positive thinking and never took failure as a finality, but always as an opportunity to do things better the next time. Rachael’s professional career 21:11 While Rachael worked as a model for awhile, she is not transitioning into her career as an actress. Rachael swears that one’s mentality sets them apart from others, and that it’s all about confidence and the vision you have for yourself. It’s so important to believe in yourself that you are doing what you are meant to do. Getting used of the rejection in the entertainment industry. 30:43 Rachael’s way of dealing rejection is by using redirection. Rachael’s perspective at tough auditions was to do her best, have fun with it, and take the opportunity to do what she loved and showcase her talent. Rachael’s gained respect and success: 42:19 Rachael now works as a professional dancer, touring and dancing alongside artists such as Rihanna, Katy Perry, Pink, Kanye West and Justin Timberlake to name a few. In addition, she's had much success as an actress in Film, TV and Commercials, allowing her to work with some of the industries top directors & producers. Rachael trained with Stella Adler's protégé, Arthur Mendoza at The Actors Circle Theatre in Hollywood for many years, fine tuning her skills and perfecting her technique. She now studies with Cameron Thor at Carter Thor Studios, and with Candy Kaniecki. Knowing there's an advantage to being a multifaceted entertainer, Rachael brings a lot to the table as an artist. You can see her in 2013 in Steven Soderbergh's new film with Michael Douglas, Behind The Candelabra, also the film Lucky Stiff, starring Jason Alexander, as well as Fuse TV's new show The Hustle. Rachael’s Greatest Advice: 49:05 “Find out what your heart beats for, what gets you excited, and then do that whether it’s a profession or hobby, and have a sense of excitement and gratitude!” Links: Twitter: @RachelMarkarian

Episode #17: Twice the talent, twice the laughs, twice as long! But when you're in the room with Ruth Gottschall and Mary Testa, you just don't want to leave! I had a fantastic afternoon with the two of them, chatting and websurfing and singing "Moving Right Along", the women's version. Yes, this is the same explicit song that you heard back in January for two guys in a gay bar, rewritten for two women in a singles bar. (The lyrics for this version appear in the back of the songbook.) Recorded 4/12/06.Where to begin? Ruth is a veteran of eight Broadway shows, most recently Jackie Mason's Laughing Room Only, however her longest run of late was as Eulalie Shinn in the revival of The Music Man, a role she will recreate this summer at the Sacramento Music Circus. Before that, you can catch her as Mrs. Upson in the sure-to-be-fabulous Kennedy Center production of Mame. Also, let PBS know that you want to see the educational series, Character Studies, so you can catch Ruth on the "Harold Hill" episode.Mary Testa's resumé is so impressive, I don't know what to mention first! Should I start with her two Tony nominations, for On the Town and 42nd Street? Her numerous Off Broadway credits and the Obie award for On the Town and From Above? Her amazing performances on the original cast recordings of In Trousers, Lucky Stiff, A Funny Thing Happened...Forum (with Ruth too!), A New Brain, Marie Christine, and most recently, Michael John La Chiusa's See What I Wanna See? Or should I just mention that she loves Faith, the Biped Dog and Michelle Collins' blog, You Can't Make It Up? Mary fans can catch her in the concert, Hands Across the Sea, at Merkin Hall on May 16th and 17th, as well as in Jam & Spice, a Kurt Weill revue at the Westport Playhouse in June.
