Ron Dante was born in Staten Island, NY. He was a member of the Detergents, whose “Leader of the Laundromat” made the Top 40 when he was just 20 years old. He was working with Don Kirshner and singing and songwriting with the Brill Building group of artists such as Carole King, Tony Orlando, and Neil Sedaka before most of them became household names. He's produced several Broadway musicals, including the Tony Award-winning Ain't Misbehavin'. He produced Barry Manilow's hit albums, sang backup on “Mandy,” basically discovered Pat Benatar, and then, of course, there's work as the voice of the Archies and the Cuff Links. The question shouldn't be who was he — it should be who wasn't he. He's done everything, and he's still doing it. He's the one and only Ron Dante. REBEAT: I read that you were from a musical family and your dad sang around the house a lot and that's where your love of music came from. RON DANTE: Yes, my dad wasn't a professional singer but he loved to sing as did his six brothers. When we'd go to a wedding, everybody would get up and sing, everybody was a ham. I heard music very early in my life. My dad loved his records and had a big stack of 78s on the record player. He'd run a string to the couch so he could change the records and listen to six or seven records in a row. I listened to the Platters, Patti Page, and then I discovered Elvis when I was 10, and that changed my life completely. A few years later, I fell from a tree and injured my arm, and the doctor said I needed to exercise it, to do something to work the arm. I decided I'd play the guitar, so Dad bought me one. Then when I was about 14, I put my first band together, the Persuaders. One New Year's Eve, I made $75 playing, so I said, “Well, this is the profession I want to be in!” I mean, I'm 14 and made $75 for one gig, and my dad worked all week for $50. I said, “This is something I can do.” You made the Detergents record, “Leader of the Laundromat,” in 1965. But before that had you already started working with Don Kirshner? How did all of that play out? Even before the Detergents record, I got a job as a staff singer and demo-maker with Don Kirshner when I was 17 years old. I was signed to a publishing contract and told to write songs. I was in the New York office with artists like Carole King and Tony Orlando and Neil Sedaka. It was amazing. This publishing company was one of the hottest in the world. Don Kirshner gave me my start in the business. I'll forever be grateful to him for that opportunity. I got to see all these writers, the way they produced their demos, I got to see the singers, I actually got to sing background on some of Neil Sedaka's early hits. As a teenager out of Staten Island, I had the opportunity of a lifetime. The Detergents song did well, but tell me about the years between that song and your time as the voice of the Archies. As the Detergents song peaked, we went on the road with the Dick Clark Caravan of Stars and toured for about a year then came back home and set up an office where I was going to be a songwriter and producer. I started doing commercials and any odd job I could just to stay in the music business. I actually ended up writing a Broadway show. I had done backgrounds for a friend of mine named Jeff Barry, who was writing the score for a Broadway production. He said, “You should be the voice of this rock band that's in the show.” I did it but the show closed after a couple of weeks, but I had the chance to meet a variety of people, and some of them said, “You're a songwriter. We have this property we want to do, a version of Billy Budd by Herman Melville. We want to make it a rock opera.” So at 20 years old, I wrote a rock opera that was on Broadway. It was unbelievable and a great opportunity. We raised about half a million dollars to put that show on. We didn't get good reviews, but it was a learning experience. But I must say that everything that happens to me either I'm a winner, or I learn. I met a lot of great people who were important to know along the way. Ten years after Billy Budd, my Ain't Misbehavin show came along. Everything happens for a reason. So you're working with Broadway shows, but we're moving into that period where “Sugar, Sugar” comes along. I read somewhere that because of your connections to Don Kirshner, you heard they were looking for a voice for the lead on the Archies and asked for an audition. Is that basically what happened? Actually, a friend of mine was playing keyboard in the band doing the tracks for the new Archies show that Jeff Barry and Don Kirshner were putting together. They didn't have any singers, but they had musicians, and one of the musicians was the best man at my wedding. He said, “You know Don Kirshner. You should call him and come over and be the voice.” So I told him I would, and I called and went in for an audition, sang one of the songs, and got the job of being the voice of Archie on the songs. It was great working with people I knew; it was like a homecoming. Jeff Barry and Andy Kim wrote “Sugar, Sugar,” but did they write it for the program or was the song already written and just used for the program? The word I got from Andy was that Jeff called him and said, ”We need a single for the show, we need a hit. What do you think we should do?” and over the phone, Andy said, “Why don't you do something like this? [Sings] ‘Sugar, dah da dah dah da dah, aww honey, honey…'” and that was the beginning of that song. Have you ever asked Andy Kim how he felt about not doing that great song himself? He was still a year away from his first big hit with “Baby, I Love You.” I think Andy — and we're close friends — I think he appreciates and knows I was the right voice for that song. That was the right platform, the television show, to deliver the song. He's done well financially from the show and does it in his own show when he performs. I think his songs were more elevated and for a more mature market than ours. We were shooting for teenagers and preteenagers, kids who chewed bubblegum. That's how the term “bubblegum music” came about. The songs were aimed at a very young audience. He's fine with it. The Detergents song did well, but tell me about the years between that song and your time as the voice of the Archies. Jules Alexander (born September 25th, 1943, Chattanooga, Tennessee), an original member of the group The Association (vocals, lead guitar), used his middle name Gary on the group's first 2 albums. In 1967 Jules Alexander left the group to study meditation in India, returning to the group he had helped found in early 1969. He continued recording & touring with the group until leaving the group in early 1989. In September 2003, when the group was inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame, he joined former members at the induction ceremony in Niles, Ohio. He again rejoined the others for the taping of a PBS 60s rock music special 60's Experience on December 9th, 2004.   Once upon a time, The Association owned a large chunk of the pop-rock landscape. During the late 1960s, the group charted numerous radio-friendly hits such as “Cherish,” “Never My Love,” “Windy” and “Along Comes Mary.” Fifty years later, those classic songs have sustained the group who maintain a loyal following. “It's just amazing to see these 70-year-old people turn back into kids when we play those songs,” says Jules Alexander, lead guitarist, vocalist and co-founder member of The Association. “We have a shared body of experience with our audience and it's so much fun to play for them.” The Association is also sharing an experience with five other headline artists of the '60s and '70s when The Happy Together Tour returns to Phoenix's Celebrity Theater at 8 p.m. Friday, July 21. The acclaimed summer tour is back and will feature 53 Billboard hits and some of the biggest songs of the era. In addition to the Association, the lineup includes The Turtles featuring Flo & Eddie, The Box Tops, The Cowsills, Chuck Negron formerly of Three Dog Night and The Archies' Ron Dante. The Association is one of the most popular and successful bands to have come out of the '60s. They have sold millions of records and have seven Grammy Award nominations, and kicked off the historic Monterey Pop Festival in 1967. “It was a magical time and I remember having a great talk with Janis Joplin that weekend,” Alexander says. “We were backstage and just started talking about this, that and the other. It was the coolest thing.” He also thinks being a part of The Happy Together tour is cool, too. “I've known some of these folks and maintained a relationship with them for more than 50 years and then we've made some new friends, like the Cowsills, who are the funniest and most interesting people I think I've ever met in the music business,” Alexander says. Alexander says he also likes the format of the show, which allots each band 20 minutes to play its greatest hits. “We'd always want to play more but it's fun to go out there and go petal to the metal,” Alexander says. “If you're doing 30 songs, you have to pace yourself. On this tour, we don't have to worry about it.” #julesalexander #theassociation

Yeah, I know it's supposed to be spelled with periods, but that really screwed with the file names, so let's all just live with it, OK? Victor Willis was hired on to be the voice of the Village People, but like Ron Dante and The Archies, he was pretty much all there was to the band until they needed to put in some live appearances. So, like The Monkees, a casting call went out. Sure, the criteria for being in the Village People were a little different from being in The Monkees, but most of the group was cast based on their ability to dance (and, presumably, grow a moustache) rather than on their musical talent. But as a result of this, and the fact that Willis was a writer or co-writer on most of the Village People's biggest hits, the group has gone through some lengthy legal hassles in recent years. In 2012 he regained some control over the tracks, and in another lawsuit he stopped performance of that year's incarnation of the band when he discovered that recordings involving him were being used to promote the show. Recently--just a few weeks ago--he announced that he was going to re-boot the group, which also includes finding new characters to play the various parts. But enough nonsense. Listen to the show and enjoy the effect that all the pollen in Baltimore is having on my voice. Incidentally, here is the American Bandstand clip. From everything I've heard about Dick Clark, I'd be willing to bet that he was the one who caught the kids' actions and told the tech crew to capture them on camera so that he could not-so-subtly coach the group into adopting the arm letters. .

In 1972, Ron Dante recorded this album for Buddha records entitled 'Spiderman: A Rockomic', offering up infectious tunes like 'Goin' Crosstown' interspersed within a storyline. The album music was released under the name The Webspinners, and although those recordings are superb, they sound dated today. Therefore I have played around with some music I think goes well with this story, most of which is from various other Soundtracks and have interspersed snippets of dialogue from the original recording of Spider Man throughout for a more contemporary and funkier experience. In the mid 1960s, a group called The Detergents released an album of novelty songs, and a couple of them caught on, but one did especially well, a parody of the Shangri-Las' "Leader of the Pack." Among that group was a young man named Ron Dante. A few years later, Dante was chosen to be the lead voice for a fictional band that was tied in with a cartoon series. That band was The Archies, and they had a short string of hits, peaking with "Sugar Sugar" in 1969. Dante provided all the male voices on "Sugar Sugar," and Toni Wine provided all the female voices. So yes, you appear to hear two women—one singing low and the other singing high—but in fact they're both Toni Wine. Wine left the group around the time "Sugar Sugar" became a hit, and the female portion of The Archies' follow-up single was voiced by someone else. You'll just have to listen in to find out who that was. The Archies, around the "Sugar Sugar" era. From Left to right: Toni Wine, Ron Dante, Jeff Barry, Hot Dog (taking a break from conducting), Ron Dante, Toni Wine. Heh. I still remember the first time I heard "Sugar Sugar" by The Archies -- and Ron Dante. It was September 1969, I was a new fourth grader in Mrs. Arnesan’s class at Judd Elementary School in North Brunswick, New Jersey, riding the school bus home. We were on Black Horse Lane, then a shady, rural road, driving all the way to the end of it to drop off one of my classmates at her secluded home. As usual when we had our regular driver at the wheel, WABC 77 AM was blasting through the tinny speakers.

Welcome to Light On Light Through, Episode 79, in which you will hear the complete 65-minute interview Patrick Rands did with me about my music, in June 2006.   I drove up to WZBC Radio studios outside of Boston on a beautiful early summer afternoon for the interview by Partick Rands on his "Test Patterns" radio show on WZBC (Boston College) Radio.  With my 1972 LP, Twice Upon a Rhyme, re-issued in mini-CD by Big Pink/Beatball Records in December 2008, and to be re-issued in a vinyl re-pressing by Whiplash/Sound of Salvation Records in November 2010, I thought this interview, in which Patrick played 14 of my songs (many rarely heard before) to be especially significant.   A complete playlist and links to the music on the Web follow below ... I had first come to know Patrick after his review of Rhino Handmade's Come to the Sunshine compilation CD in 2005 - the CD has my group The Other Voices (aka The New Outlook) singing "Hung Up On Love," a song I wrote with Mikie Harris, produced by Ellie Greenwich & Mike Rashkow, and released on Atlantic Records in 1968.   Patrick played "Hung Up On Love" and a dozen other recordings that I wrote, sang, produced (or all three) on our show in 2006.  As a special coda, I performed my new song, "Lime Streets," for the very first time at the end of the show.  I had written it just a month before the interview. Patrick was good enough to lend me his daughter's cool little keyboard for my rendition - it was my only instrumentation, so I was practically unplugged.   A complete list of the songs played on the show follows.  Patrick has a nice 'n' easy interview style, and I really had a good time.   Among the secrets revealed for the first time on the show:  how Ed Fox and I wrote "The Lama Will Be Late This Year" (and who, exactly, was 'Hawaiian Herb'?) . . . .the real reason that jazz-man Boris Midney left the Soviet Union  . . . what song got in the way of The Vogues releasing their recording of my song, "Unbelieavable (Inconceivable You)", on Reprise Records? . . . . and how old was Linda Kaplan when she wrote "Skyscraper" with me in the late 1960s? ( well, a lot younger than when she later wrote the famous "Toys 'R Jingle" . . . . "I don't wanna grow up . . . .") And the playlight is as follows:   1. No Olympian Height(s) - recorded by The Other Voices (The New Outlook), Paul Levinson, Stu Nitekman, Ira Margolis (Stu singing lead), song written by Brute Force, produced by Ellie Greenwich & Mike Rashkow, 2nd single released on Atlantic, 1968   2. Hung Up On Love - recorded by The Other Voices (The New Outlook) - Paul Levinson, Stu Nitekman, Ira Margolis (but Mike Rashkow singing lead) - song written by Paul Levinson & Mikie Harris, produced by Ellie Greenwich & Mike Rashkow, B-side of both May My Heart Be Cast Into Stone, and No Olympian Heights, singles released on Atlantic, 1968 (included on Rhino's Come to the Sunshine CD, 2004)   3. Picture Postcard World - recorded by The Definitive Rock Chorale - studio group with Ellie Greenwich, Toni Wine, Ron Dante, etc - song written by Paul Levinson, produced by Ellie Greenwich & Mike Rashkow, released on Decca, 1968   4. Unbelievable (Inconceivable You) - recorded by The Vogues - song written by Paul Levinson, produced by Dick Glasser for Reprise, 1968, but never released   5. Sunshine Mind - recorded by Donna Marie (who sang in the Archies) - song written by Paul Levinson, produced by Jimmy "Wiz" Wisner, released on Columbia, 1968   6. Love Colored Glasses - studio demo recorded by Mikie Harris, written by Paul Levinson & Mikie Harris, 1968   7. Teacups and Tapestry - studio demo (artist unknown), written by Paul Levinson and Boris Midney, 1969   8. Skyscraper - studio demo by Linda Kaplan (later wrote "Toys 'R U" jingle), written by Paul Levinson & Linda Kaplan, 1968   9. Ring Around My Rosie - recorded by Protozoa - song written by David Fox, produced by Paul Levinson, Ed Fox, and Herb Abramson, Buddah Records, 1969   10. Merri- Goes-Round - recorded by Trousers (studio group; Bruce Scott singing lead) - written by Paul Levinson & Ed Fox, produced by Paul Levinson & Ed Fox, released on Wizdom Records, 1969   11. Not Yet Ready to Say Goodbye - recorded by Paul Levinson, with Ed Fox and Peter Rosenthal (Paul singing lead) - written by Paul Levinson & Linda Kaplan, produced by Paul Levinson & Ed Fox, released on Twice Upon A Rhyme LP, HappySad Records, 1972 (musicians on this album also include Don Frankel, Jay Sackett, Alan Fuhr, Boris Midney)   12. The Lama Will Be Late This Year - recorded by Paul Levinson, with Ed Fox and Peter Rosenthal (Ed singing lead) - written by Paul Levinson & Ed Fox, produced by Paul Levinson & Ed Fox, released on Twice Upon A Rhyme LP, HappySad Records, 1972 (musicians on this album also include Don Frankel, Jay Sackett, Alan Fuhr, Boris Midney)   13. Alpha Centauri - recorded by Peter Rosenthal (home demo) - written by Paul Levinson & Peter Rosenthal, 2000   14. Lime Streets - live performance by Paul Levinson, written by Paul Levinson, 2006    And you'll also hear nice medley of New Outlook folk rock under some of the interview near the beginning...   Links to the music on the Web:   on iTunes ...
