Never underestimate the shocking antics Kanye West will do! Now - unraveling because of Kim Kardashian's plans to divorce him - he's planning a trip to Russia to meet with President Putin! And you thought our problems with Russia weren't precarious enough?! Putin is playing a cat and mouse game. Can Biden stop Russia from invading Ukraine? Here to talk about this and more is today's guest: Brigadier General Peter B. Zwack (Ret) Defense Attache to Moscow 2012 – 2014. He is a Global Fellow at The Kennan Institute, Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, Senior Russia-Eurasia Research Fellow, National Defense University, and author of Afghanistan Kabul Kurier: One Soldier's Story of the Taliban, Tribes & Loyalties, Opium Trade, & Burqas; and Swimming the Volga: A U.S. Army Officer's Experiences in Pre-Putin Russia. BGr Zwack served in senior military positions both for Republican and Democratic Administrations (Reagan, Clinton, Bush, Obama, and Trump). These include Joint Chiefs of Staff, US Ambassador to Moscow, Commander of European Command and US Army Europe, commander Kosovo Force and Afghanistan (NATO) and Directors of Defense Intelligence Agency, National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, and Army Cyber Command. As the senior Defense Attache to Moscow in 2014, he was present when the Russians invaded Ukraine and annexed Crimea and had seen a variation of this before. So, he probably knows a lot more about Putin and Russia than Kanye! (Replay)

This episode the National Crawford Roundtable discusses the current fiasco in Afghanistan. How serious is this humiliation for the United States? Are we experiencing another, "fall of Saigon" moment? Was the 20 year war a waste of time, effort and resources? In Biden's address to the nation he defended, "his" decision to end the war, but wasn't it Trump who negotiated the war's end? Isn't the bigger issue not that we left, but HOW we left? Trump negotiated an agreement that was dependent upon the Taliba not trying to seize control of Afghanistan, but after Biden took office the Taliban started advancing, but Biden did not respond accordingly. And why does the spokesman for the Taliban have an active Twitter account, but Trump does not? The Taliban is already alluding to reinstating Sharia Law--how will that affect women and homosexuals in the country? Will executions of gays happen again? Will women be forced to wear Burqas, not be allowed to leave their homes without a male escort or written permission from their husbands? Will women be denied an education and employment? What about the military equipment, weapons, ammunition, tanks, etc. that has been left behind--how will they be used by the Taliban? Does this mean we have, "officially" lost the war on terror against the Taliban? What should we have done differently?

Sri Lanka’s cabinet has approved a proposed ban on wearing full-face veils including Muslim burqas in public, citing national security grounds, despite a United Nations expert’s comment that it would violate international law.The cabinet approved the proposal by Public Security Minister Sarath Weerasekera at its weekly meeting on TuesdayWeerasekara has called burqas, a garment that covers the body and face worn by some Muslim women, a sign of religious extremism and says a ban would improve national security. The UN special rapporteur on freedom of religion or belief Ahmed Shaheed tweeted that a ban would be incompatible with international law and the right to free religious expression.

Historically, religious freedom was considered an essential right, associated with freedom of conscience, and the eighteenth century saw significant philosophical and practical expansion of the right of individuals to practise different religions as they saw fit. Today, we often see religious freedom pitted against other basic liberties like free speech and gender equality. Can these freedoms coexist? Moderated by Jon O'brien. This week, Adelaide joined the world in observing a full, lunar eclipse and we are sure the lunar effect affected this podcast episode. Not only did Nigel get corrected by his wife regarding the time the eclipse will happen (and he's the science one), but we stumbled into some interesting subjects that Adelaideans rarely talk about until way after dark. However, we were joined by a prominent Adelaidean, Lynda Pearl-Wilson, a former dress designer, whoe gave us a peep under the controversial burqa. She was the dressmaker to a Serbian Muslim woman in Adelaide and will reveal some unexpected requests and beliefs that put paid to the vile, fear-stoked, bitterness that is given full voice in the mass media whenever burqas and other forms of head dress and body covering are mentioned. It is Mental Health Week and tomorrow is World Mental Health Day, so local advertising guy and committed vegan, Tom Williamson, who has also appeared on our podcast with his Vegan Australia Day BBQ, will combine wine and mental health by sharing a gorgeous selection of Bathe Wines available to all of us at a special price while also raising money for the Black Dog Institute for their research into mental illness. This week is also the last of our play-at-home editions of Is It News and it takes us to the Western Suburbs. Good luck. Local radio legend, FIVEaa's Andrew Reimer, drops by with a recording session of announcements for our podcast. NOTE: These were recorded live on his radio program last Sunday night. And not only does Phil Paviour provide us with his newest song, he also helps us pronounce his surname!
