As we've reported multiple times in the last year, Louisville had been in consideration for the legendary film festival but that is no longer the case. That said, LBF Reporter Michael L. Jones did recently get his hands on what had been offered by the city and state to bring Sundance here: An incentive package valued at $73M.After that, we get into some development and restaurant news. We chat about an upcoming move by High Horse, a popular Butchertown bar, that's going to Louisville's NuLu neighborhood following a dispute with its landlord.Further, we discuss a new pedway that's planned between two NuLu buildings and a new bourbon attraction, called Whiskey Thief, that's moving into that neighborhood. LBF got a sneak peak at Whiskey Theif recently.Late in the show, Jones tells us about an ownership change at Ciao, a well-known Italian restaurant near the Highlands. And we wrap things up by talking about the Kroger company's efforts to update its store on Outer Loop as it faces new competition from Publix. Access Louisville is a weekly podcast from Louisville Business First. After a few weeks abroad, we're back in the US, in Kentucky!  But we're not back to whiskey yet. This week, it's the Brandy Ring Podcast! Copper & Kings American Brandy Distillery sits in the heart of Louisville's Butchertown neighborhood. In a relatively small space, they manage to use shipping containers, a wide-open events space/patio, and a beautiful wall of windows that can open in good weather right in front of their copper pot stills.  Brandy just might be the oldest spirit in America, if not the world. And if you think Kentucky is just for whiskey, think again. Whether it's from grapes, apples, pears, or some other fruit they're trying for fun, C&K is pumping out world-class brandy in the left ventricle of the bourbon world.  They were doing sonic aging before Blackened (click here to subscribe to their daily playlists!). Their stills are named for women in Bob Dylan songs.  They're not afraid to play with casks (they call themselves barrel sluts) or with finishes, and the bottle-your-own experience where I got a heritage cider apple brandy is not to be missed (nor is their restaurant). Also don't sleep on a 130 proof 4YO absinthe that is *chef's kiss*.  Enjoy this episode all about brandy with distiller Brandon O'Daniel! _________________ Before we jump into the interview just a few quick notes: If you haven't joined the Patreon community yet, please consider doing so! Only 4 Spots Remain in the Barrel Club. But new U.S. Census numbers show us that the fastest growth has actually taken place in the suburbs between 2010 and 2020.After the growth talk, we switch gears and talk about Louisville's brewing scene. On this week's program, host Hart Hagan sits down for a long chat with Martina Kunnecke from Neighborhood Planning and Preservation (NPP). Martina has been incredibly active in Louisville public affairs and is so knowledgeable about how the big decisions get made that effect our neighborhoods and our urban fabric. Don't miss this chance to learn from a veteran! NPP began in 2003 as a response to the demolition of the McWhorter Farmhouse in Clifton, now the site of condos, restaurants, and shops. The organization's first preservation efforts focused upon the proposed demolition of the Brinly-Hardy buildings on East Main Street, some of which dated to pre-Civil War era. An ugly fight ensued between NPP, led at the time by Jim Segrest (a Butchertown activist and former president of the Butchertown Neighborhood Association), the city, and developers. The result was that the buildings were torn down and a $21 million condominium complex called the Fleur de Lis on Main was erected. On Truth to Power each week, we gather Forward Radio programmers and friends to discuss the state of the world, the nation, the state, and the city! Louisville's Butchertown got its name from the stockyards and meat processing plants that dominated the neighborhood a century or more ago. Today, it's a thriving, trendy neighborhood that's home to the Butchertown Grocery. Chef Bobby Benjamin opened the restaurant and Lola, its upstairs cocktail lounge, with an eye to great cooking - and great whiskey. Not only are there plenty of private barrel Bourbons behind the bar, but whiskey is also a key ingredient in many of the restaurant's recipes. Chef Bobby Benjamin joins us on WhiskyCast In-Depth to talk about picking private barrels - and a surprising way to use the char that comes out of those barrels! In the news, Diageo's plans for reviving Brora Distillery have received local approval, while Ireland's tough new alcohol bill is a signature away from becoming law.

Matt Jamie’s motto of “Slow. Small. Simple.” guides his company in producing high quality, bourbon-based sauces. Louisville-native Jamie established Bourbon Barrel Foods in 2006. Made in re-purposed bourbon barrels, Jamie uses Kentucky grown non-GMO soybeans, soft red winter wheat, and limestone-filtered Kentucky water to produce his soy sauce. The smoky, brothy, meaty sauce has a subtle sweetness, similar to fine Kentucky bourbon. Bourbon Barrel Foods has since grown to include smoked spices, artisan sugars, gourmet sauces and marinades, grill wood, sorghum, vanilla extract, and a Woodford Reserve® branded line. Jamie’s studio is based in the Butchertown neighborhood of Louisville, Ky., and hosts cooking classes, chef-driven events, and corporate team building activities. He is an active Greater Louisville Inc. member and supports a pro-business environment. The company’s motto of “Slow. Small. Simple.” remains an important part of its culture and the artisan nature of Bourbon. Jamie’s hobbies are tennis and fatherhood. He resides in Louisville and has two children.

A weekly handful of weird, wonderful and wacky happenings dredged up from the kaleidoscopic depths of San Francisco history. November 24, 1899: Collars, ties, and Butchertown mayhem Our first item flowed from the pen of some long-forgotten San Francisco Chronicle beat writer, a piece in which a neighborhood dispute is lovingly detailed. Butchertown was a tough old San Francisco neighborhood on the edge of today's Bay View district, around the mouth of Islais Creek. It was comprised mostly of German and Irish immigrants -- ballplayer Lefty O'Doul was probably its most famous son -- and it was absolutely packed with slaughterhouses, meat packers and (here's a shocker) butchers. Without further ado, a dash of local color circa 1899: Haberdashery Issue Stirs Butchertown Whether William Beckman and Thomas O'Leary quarreled over a love affair or over collars and neckties is a mooted question. Beckman is a butcher employed in one of the many abattoirs of South San Francisco. A few months ago he married the former Mrs. O'Leary, and when O'Leary, after a three years absence, returned to town two weeks ago and found that his divorced wife had become Mrs. Beckman, there was trouble in Butchertown. It all resulted in the arrest of O'Leary on a charge of making threats against life, and the case came up yesterday in Police Judge Conlan's Court. Beckman told of a long knife with which O'Leary threatened to perform an autopsy on (him). There was also a dispute, Beckman said, as to whether the wearing of collars and neckties was proper form in Butchertown. read on ...
