Do you have a minute to accept head slugs as our lords and saviors? This week the gang go on a pulpy adventure to Mars to discuss The Vaults of Yoh-Vombis by Clark Ashton Smith. Before removing their hats and giving their craniums up to the slugs, they chat about Pantheon, The Pitt, S.M. Stirling's Conan: Blood of the Serpent, The Heritic, The Black Maybe by Attila Veres, Camp Damascus by Chuck Tingle, and Duncan Ralston's Puzzle House. Now give in to the head slugs and let them do their thing!
In this episode of The Book Fix podcast, Yajaira and Cheli review Camp Damascus by Chuck Tingle, a chilling horror novel set in a small town where faith rules all. The town of Neverton is famous for its conversion therapy camp, Camp Damascus, which claims a 100% success rate at "curing" people of their sins. The protagonist, Rose Darling, has always believed in the teachings of her community until she starts experiencing strange occurrences—vomiting up flies, visions of demons, and flashes of memories she can't explain. It's time for tea and scones with Chuck Tingle as we discuss how existing is an arrogant act against the forces of the infinite, why it's horror rather than comedy which warms his heart, how he used social media to find a publisher for Camp Damascus (and why that technique probably won't work for you), how to write horror about a gay conversion camp without retraumatizing in an already traumatizing world, the differences between cathartic horror and grueling horror (and why he's more interested in the former), the intriguing comment his copyeditor made about a reference to Superman, which comics subgenre occupies the most space on his bookshelves, the five creators who've most influenced him (and my encounter with one of them during the '70s), how art is more than what's between the covers of a book or within the frame of a painting, what most people get wrong about the term "high concept," and much more.
Hello, dear listeners! I wanted to give you all an update about the show. To whit: I'm taking a bit of a break. The last five seasons have been incredible, and season six has been and will continue to be. Tales from the Trunk is in no way ending. We will be back on September 20th, when I'll be talking to T. Kingfisher. In the mean time, here are some of the things that I have been enjoying from the wider media landscape: A podcast: Friends at the Table – their eighth season, Palisade, is coming to a close right now, and it has been a Ride. A book: Bury Your Gays, by Chuck Tingle – you already know how much I loved Camp Damascus, and it should come as no surprise that the good doctor's follow-up is every bit as incredible. A TV show: Hunter × Hunter (2011) – Just a fantastic shōnen anime. And a musical twofer: Chappel Roan – come on. I'm queer. She writes good pop hooks. Suggested tracks: “Pink Pony Club” and “My Kink is Karma” Porter Robinson – if you like bouncy but also emotional EDM, give him a go. Suggested tracks: “Knock Yourself Out XD” and “Shelter” Thanks again for your support over the years, and I look forward to returning in two months with even more amazing interviews with incredible guests.
It's Chuck Tingle's debut novel! It's not great!
It's a scary time for LGBTQIA+ folks — and many of us are turning to horror stories that take our real-life terrors and make them even more monstrous. To find out why, we talk to Dr. Chuck Tingle, the author of Camp Damascus and Bury Your Gays, and we geek out about why queers love to be scared. Also, we talk about horror movie soundtracks — and the 1970s prog rock experiment that changed horror movie music forever. Shownotes: https://www.ouropinionsarecorrect.com/shownotes

Recently, Mara Wilson was talking about her favorite (and least favorite) romance tropes on social media, so I invited her onto the podcast to tell us all about it. You may know Mara Wilson from Matilda or Mrs. Doubtfire, but she's currently working very happily as an audiobook narrator, most recently for Chuck Tingle's Camp Damascus! Please note: we don't talk a lot about the films she has been in, because this was recorded while SAG-AFTRA and the WGA were on strike. This week, the Squad and special guest Ang Ferraguto (aka Kelli's gf) discuss Sofia Coppola's new film, Priscilla, based on the 1985 book Elvis and Me by Priscilla Presley. We talk about our own personal connections to Elvis, the Sofia Coppola aesthetic of it all, the problematic nature of Elvis and Priscilla's relationship, and the ~discourse~ around the movie. Tangential conversation addresses Usher's Vegas residency. As soon as we heard Chuck Tingle's debut horror novel, Camp Damascus, was set at a gay conversion camp, we knew we had to feature it on the podcast! Cohosts Anne and Amber were eager to discuss this (surprisingly deep) reflection on religion's impact on the lives of the LGTBQ+ community. Topics discussed include: religion as a means of control, strained family relationships as a result of religious beliefs, and the horror trope of throwing up insects. If you're interested in reading Camp Damascus after listening to this episode, consider borrowing it from your local library or purchasing it from an independent bookstore!
Listen, we NEVER talk about vampires on this podcast, and we're not gonna do it today. Just kidding; yes we are. In our discussion of Vampires of El Norte by Isabel Cañas, we also talk about romance, historical fiction, cover design, and the fact that westerns have to have a hot person for anyone on the squad to be interested. Next we get into some listener feedback and catch up with what's on the blog (yes, we still have that!). On our next Othersode on 11/14, we'll be talking about Sofia Coppola's new movie, Priscilla. After that we'll be reading Camp Damascus by Chuck Tingle on our 11/28 Bookpisode. You should read along! In this spooky month episode, your hosts discuss Camp Damascus by Chuck Tingle, notorious parody erotica author. This book, however, has a lot more bugs and a lot less sex. They talk about how important it is to pace info in horror stories, the inherent horror of gay conversion camps, and whether this book even counts as a horror novel at all. But on one thing they do agree - it sure is spooky. This episode includes discussion of homophobia and religious trauma.Find us on discord: https://discord.gg/dpNHTWVu6b or support us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/fictionfanspodThanks to the following musicians for the use of their songs:- Darkest Child by Kevin MacLeodLicensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 License

Mara Wilson expertly narrates a queer horror novel about an evangelical religious community in Montana and the gay conversion therapy camp at its heart. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Emily Connelly discuss this new audiobook from internet sensation Chuck Tingle, read with skill by Mara Wilson. Rose Darling is twenty, and while she never went to Camp Damascus, she knows people who have—they just won't talk about it. The novel takes a sharp turn into the surreal in the first chapter when Rose vomits up mayflies at the dinner table and her parents pass it off as a fluke. Wilson narrates with emotional depth, conveying all of Rose's intelligence, inquisitiveness, and fear as she's hunted by otherworldly beings. This week we're joined by the man, the myth, the mystery that is Chuck Tingle. Who knows the truth of this enigmatic figure? What visage lies beneath the pink bag that forever encases his face? Does he really have a PhD in massage? Puzzles abound…The one thing that's certain is the brilliance of his new novel. Camp Damascus is a full-bloodied horror novel set in that most hideous of environs: a religious community and a gay conversion camp. Sounds triggering. It may well be … but Chuck has also invested this story with such hope and joy and yes, LOVE, that it more than salves all the human horror and demonic jump scares. We cover tons in this episode – the stoic seriousness of fictional sex, the maligned trinity of genres, rattling the religious right, the simple trick to writing effective jumpscares and the final, full declaration of why love is real. It's my absolute delight to welcome an absolute dream of a guest this time around: Chuck Tingle (@ChuckTingle)! On this episode, we are joined by a very special guest. As a site that celebrates sincerity and creates things that are sometimes a bit outside the box, this interview is something special. This author creates art that is unlike anything out there with a full heart untainted by irony or anything of that matter. Today, we are speaking with the one and only Chuck Tingle. Get ready buckaroos because this is one of the best interviews we have done! Chuck Tingle is a self-published Hugo award-nominated author whose titles include Space Raptor Butt Invasion, The Physical Manifestation Of Wurdle Pounds My Butt As A Slightly Frustrating But Ultimately Rewarding And Meditative Daily Routine, and many other titles. But Chuck has ventured into the world of publishing to get his first traditionally published work out to all of the buckaroos through bookstores and more. This is the first time you can pick up Chuck's work in a traditional bookstore so please be sure to support him and queer horror by preordering it here and calling your local library to make sure they get a copy as well! Chuck Tingle's book is called Camp Damascus which revolves around a young girl's journey of self-discovery in Neverton, Montana. Which is a "god-fearing" community that is built around a megachurch and a conversion camp called Camp Damascus. I don't want to give too much away about the story in a quick summary here but I will say once I started reading, I couldn't put it down other than to get a few hours of sleep. But I woke up at 6:00 AM like a child rushing downstairs on Christmas morning to finish it. It treats the camp like a monster just under the surface like Jaws, which Chuck speaks about in our conversation. It is one of the best pieces of queer horror that I have ever gotten the honor to read. I truly hope you give this book a chance because it's unlike any other horror I have read. This is the first time you can pick up Chuck's work in a traditional bookstore so please be sure to support him and queer horror by preordering it here and calling your local library to make sure they get a copy as well!
