The Cape Independence Advocacy Group is taking its quest for a sovereign Western Cape to the global stage by seeking support from the United States. The group has formally notified the President, Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, and Western Cape Premier of its plans to send a delegation to the US. This move aims to secure both financial backing and diplomatic endorsement for its campaign, ultimately pushing the Western Cape Premier Alan Winde to call a referendum on Cape Independence. To delve deeper into this development Elvis Presslin spoke to Dr. Joan Swart, spokesperson for the Cape Independence Advocacy Group
In this episode of The Pioneer Podcast, you can listen to Phil Craig, the Spokesperson and Co-Founder of the Cape Independence Advocacy Group. We discuss the issues of centralized South Africa, look at self-determination and independence from South Africa for the Western Cape.
A Bill to bring an end to all race-based policy and legislation in South Africa has been launched. But Phil Craig, whose Referendum Party is behind the Bill, says while it is getting strong support from the public, the support from the established political parties has been “disappointing” thus far. The next step is the submission of the Non-Racialism Bill to the Parliamentary Committee on Justice and Constitutional Development. “Are they going to say, well, look, this Bill is important to me, stand with it, or are they going to vote with the ANC to effectively block this bill and maintain race-based policy? And then we'll all know.” Also giving an update on the fight for Cape Independence, Craig says: “We have to build a beachhead of political power so we can then force that decision down onto the Western Cape government and obviously we'll be able to use the private referendum as a means to build pressure…” Meanwhile, he predicts that “the more the GNU is exposed as a shallow compromise that isn't a long-term solution, the more our vision of self-determination for different communities, including the Western Cape, is going to come to the fore”.
In this episode of the BizNews Briefing, host Alec Hogg and his guests provide context on how the ANC's alliance with the Iranian regime is backfiring big time after the Teheran-supported Syrian dictator flees to Moscow. Plus, Neil de Beer shares his forthright opinion on his erstwhile MPC partner Helen Zille, Trump's new SA-born crypto and AI tzar, and Phil Craig explains why Cape Independence is still on the table.
Despite a tough start, Phil Craig and the Referendum Party are determined to reshape South Africa's political landscape, advocating for greater autonomy for the Western Cape in the face of national challenges.
As part of our 2024 election coverage we invited various political parties to join us on air to discuss their manifesto & agenda, today we are joined by Phil Craig from the Referendum Party. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In a Q&A session at BNC#6 in Hermanus, Alec Hogg and Phil Craig discussed the potential for Cape Independence within South Africa. Craig advocates for a referendum on the matter, emphasising the importance of democracy and self-determination. He addressed concerns about international support, potential economic impacts like the oil and gas discovery, and the necessity for negotiations. Craig also discusses the boundaries and viability of an independent Cape, acknowledging the complexity of the issue. Despite challenges, he remains optimistic about the growing support for Cape Independence.

During his keynote address at BNC#6 in Hermanus, Phil Craig asserted the viability and necessity of Cape Independence. The Referendum Party leader highlighted the threat of African nationalists and the Western Cape's economic struggles under national governance. Craig urged action, emphasising the need for a referendum, contending that the DA's reluctance poses the main obstacle. He advocated for supporting the Referendum Party to pressure the DA while cooperating with them. Craig emphasised that 2024 voting would determine the region's future.

The EFF is embroiled in an uncharacteristic mess. One of their most prominent leaders, Naledi Chirwa, was made to apologise for her behaviour, and her apology has dragged the party into a public fight to save their reputation that has even drawn in Julius Malema. Lester Kiewit speaks to Phil Craig, co-founder of the Cape Independence Advocacy Group and now the recently launched Referendum Party, a single-issue party primarily aimed at Democratic Alliance (DA) voters who support Cape Independence. It proposes keeping the DA in power (by supporting it as a coalition partner) but forcing them to listen to their voters and call a referendum on Cape Independence.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In the past three years, the Cape Independence Advocacy Group has firmly put the topic of Western Cape secession onto the agenda in the SA province that's succeeding where the rest are failing. According to the CIAG's Phil Craig, the separation process is about to be another huge step forward with the tabling of a self-determination Bill in the provincial parliament. In this fascinating interview, Craig explains why he is 100% certain this landmark Bill will be presented and passed - and how it promises to transform the South African political and geographical landscape. Since global entrepreneur Rob Hersov spoke out at BNC#2 in September 2021, only a trickle of business leaders have joined him in openly questioning the ANC misrule of South Africa. The public, however, has been overwhelmingly supportive - taking a lead from someone who had the courage to call out SA's naked emperors. In this typically candid interview with BizNews founder Alec Hogg, Hersov addresses how to break the logjam that's stalled the Rainbow Coalition - and why he'll be fully behind Cape Independence should an ANC/EFF alliance rule SA after the 2024 election. Freedom Front Plus, the political party which champions minorities and Cape Independence, is credited with being ‘the adult in the room' during fractious coalition discussions in Gauteng Metros. The electorate is paying attention, with the FF+ on the right side of seismic swings in two recent by-elections. Reasons why become apparent during this interview with party stalwart Dr Corné Mulder, a member of the National Assembly since 1988. Mulder, a fourth-generation South African politician, explains how coalition governments are the natural consequence of SA's proportional representation electoral system introduced in 1994. He reaches a hopeful conclusion – positing that a ‘Rainbow Coalition' of political parties outside of the economically destructive ANC/EFF can and will win the 2024 national election. That result, he believes, will usher in a new era of prosperity for the country. Mulder spoke to Alec Hogg of BizNews. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In episode 4 of the newest BizNews offering, editor Alec Hogg and deputy Michael Appel share insights into the news you need to know from the week that was - Hogg on business and investments, Appel on news and politics. In focus this episode, the latest on Netflix's torrid quarterly results, as well as the Naspers/Prosus discount closing strategy that keeps on failing; a story of triumph for small community radio station Pretoria FM over Primedia Broadcasting; President Cyril Ramaphosa seeks to allay the country's fears that relief funds meant for KZN will be looted; Cape Independence advocate Phil Craig on the prospect of a Western Cape breakaway; Forensic Investigator Paul O' Sullivan has launched his new book Stop Me If You Can.
Momentum for Cape Independence continues to grow, according to the leading advocacy group's Phil Craig. To illustrate its growing on-the-ground support, the movement is to hold a march through the streets of Cape Town on Wednesday's Freedom Day public holiday. It has approval for 2 000 marchers, who will assemble at the Grand Parade, although Craig reckons anything over 1 000 people would be regarded as a good turnout. Its purpose is to hand over a letter urging the DA to table a private member's bill in Parliament that would enable Referendums to be held at provincial level. This would open the way for an official Referendum on the matter for the Western Cape, which the proponents of independence say is a major step towards transforming the province into a separate country.

In this episode of Solutions With David Ansara podcast, I speak with Geordin Hill-Lewis, the Democratic Alliance mayoral candidate for the City of Cape Town, about his plans for fulfilling Cape Town's significant potential. Geordin became a Member of Parliament in 2011 and has served in various portfolio committees, including Trade and Industry, and Finance. He is "singularly obsessed with economic growth", and unlocking economic opportunities for all Capetonians is a key part of his campaign. As Geordin explains, runaway government spending at the national level is having a damaging impact on local service delivery. As the fiscal deficit widens and debt soars, budgets for housing, policing and transport have all been slashed. The question Geordin poses is this: "How do you insulate well-run parts of the country from this slow-bleed devastation?" One area where the City can distinguish itself is energy security, especially given the perennial problem of loadshedding, which we yet again experienced throughout the country this week. Should the DA win the election on 1 November, Geordin is aiming to assert the interests of the City by crowding-in independent power producers (IPPs) and not waiting for "clarity or permission" from the National Department of Mineral Resources and Energy. A small gap has been created by the lifting of the cap on private energy generation to 100MW, and Geordin wants to "kick the door open". We also discuss how Capetonians can work together to improve safety and security in their neighbourhoods, especially given the rapidly declining capacity of the SA Police Service (SAPS) in the Western Cape to maintain law and order. We reflect on what the July riots reveal about the state of policing in South Africa, and Geordin's plans to devolve policing down to the provincial and local level. I also ask him about the controversial posters that were recently erected by his party colleagues in KwaZulu-Natal. I also ask Geordin about his views on the Cape Independence movement. Geordin is sympathetic with the "emotional impetus" for why people support secession, which he says is a "massive compliment" of the DA's model of government in the Western Cape. However, he doesn't support the call for independence, preferring a federal system based on devolution to the local level, a model which he believes would benefit the whole of South Africa. In this episode of the BizNews Power Hour, Stuart Lowman is joined by Sasfin's David Shapiro with investment insights; Lord Peter Hain on removing SA from the UK red list; Phil Craig of the Cape Independence Advocacy Group discusses some big news in the political sphere; the global editor at the Bureau of Investigative Journalism, James Ball, brings us into the dirty underworld of the tobacco industry and the BizNews Team.
Phil Craig of the Cape Independence Advocacy Group joins BizNews founder Alec Hogg to discuss some big news in the political sphere. Craig recently told BizNews that the group had handed over a referendum request on Cape Independence. While the DA has said it does not support the idea of Cape Independence, it is open to the referendum itself. Craig discusses meeting with numerous political parties on the topic. "We asked them two questions - do they support Cape Independence? Regardless of whether they support it or not, are they willing to allow the people of the Western Cape...to determine whether they want independence."
Earlier this week, the Cape Independence Advocacy Group formally handed over a request for a referendum on Cape independence. Phil Craig, the co-founder of the group, joined Alec Hogg to unpack exactly what this new development means for the Cape and the rest of South Africa. "I think we all understand that things are going horribly wrong in South Africa, and we are all looking for solutions. The solution that we put on the table is independence for the Western Cape, and we want to democratically consult with the people of the Western Cape and find out how they feel about it," he explains. Craig also goes into detail about why it makes sense for the Democratic Alliance (DA) to support the referendum in the lead-up to elections.
On 23 August, Democratic Alliance Leader John Steenhuisen announced that Geordin Hill-Lewis would be the DA's candidate for mayor of Cape Town in the upcoming local government elections. If elected, Hill-Lewis - aged 34 - will be the youngest mayor in Cape Town's history. Hill-Lewis - who became a member of the DA when he was in high school - spoke to BizNews about his passion for politics, the area which he believes is the best place to make a positive change as ‘you can affect systemic change and even a 5% improvement at a systemic level can have a huge knock-on effect for society at large and for millions of people.' While Hill-Lewis says he understands the emotional impetus behind the Cape Independence movement, he has a different view on how the issues that plague South Africa can be solved - ‘by devolving power to the lowest level of competent, strong, well-run government.'
As South Africa becomes more politically unstable, the idea of Cape Independence is growing in popularity. But what would an independent Cape look like and what would Cape secession mean for the future of the country as a whole? In this episode of the 'Solutions With David Ansara' podcast I speak to Phil Craig of the Cape Independence Advocacy Group (CIAG) about why he believes complete independence is the only way to save the Cape. We discuss recent polling conducted by the CIAG which reveals growing enthusiasm for the idea of Cape secession. Phil believes that the Western Cape's consistent rejection of African Nationalism puts the province at odds with the politics of the rest of the country, and that it would be better off governing its own affairs and not being held hostage to hostile policies emanating out of Pretoria. I put it to Phil that secession may risk destabilising South Africa and could lead to a disorderly breakup of the country along racial or ethnic grounds. I state my preference for greater levels of federalism and decentralisation rather than full-blown independence. Phil notes that he is not ideologically opposed to federalism, but is opposed to it on pragmatic grounds. We also spend some time towards the end of the conversation reflecting on the lessons from independence movements in other parts of the world, such as Scotland and Catalonia. South Africa's three-tiered system of government makes provision for nine provinces, each with its own legislature and executive. But are the provinces sufficiently empowered and how is the current constitutional structure enabling or constraining provincial administrations? Do they represent the interests of citizens? In this episode of the 'Solutions With David Ansara' podcast, David is joined by Richard Wilkinson, an attorney with a special interest in provincial powers in South Africa. David and Richard explore the benefits of a federalism, and why devolution of power is more effective than centralisation.
