Niki Williams & Alexandra O'Gorman Winemaker Niki Williams of Chateau St Jean is back with Alexandra O'Gorman of Foley Family Wines on California Wine Country with Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger. They were here a month ago on this June 8, 2022 episode which was cut short by an impending NBA broadcast. So now they are back for a full show. Barry Herbst from Bottle Barn will also join us. Alexandra O'Gorman tells about Foley Family Wines. As the owners retired they acquired a central California winery and named it Foley Estate. Later they purchased other family wineries, now totaling nineteen. Niki Williams grew up in central Illinois among corn, soybeans and beef cattle. She worked for a travel company based in Chicago and got an exposure to wine by visiting other countries. The idea of terroir proved attractive. After working in theater she studied winemaking at UC Davis. She has been at Chateau St. Jean for the last four months. She worked for Merryville Family Wines at the Starmont Winery and previously at Franciscan Winery and its successors. “It's been a really good crash course in winemaking,” working with different varieties, vineyards and wine styles over the last ten years. Chateau St. Jean The winery opened in 1972 and was one of the first wineries in Sonoma Valley. It was famous for Chardonnay even then. Its previous owners stopped winemaking at the property so is the first winemaking at Chateau St. Jean since 2016. They are finishing some construction now. Chateau St. Jean has always been a destination for big events. It's a beautiful facility with amazing gardens in a hillside setting. Tom Simoneau says their blend called Cinq Cépages is like the Mouton Rothschild of Sonoma County. They won Wine of the Year for their 1996 Cinq Cépages blend. That was the first Sonoma County wine to win that prestigious award. They also have a 2016 Cinq Cépages to taste. The vineyard is in a cool area so the wine is nicely acidic. From a single vineyard block, it used 85% in stainless steel and 15% neutral French oak barrels. Robert Mondavi called his Sauvignon Blanc Fumé Blanc so that people would know it was dry. It worked and many followed him. Alexandra O'Gorman describes her job, whose title reaches all the way around her business card. She coordinates hospitality activity of nine properties in Sonoma County for Foley Family Wines. The company mission is to have good food and wine experiences in their locations. The grouop includes several historic properties like Chateau St. Jean and Sebastiani. They taste a Chardonnay that Tom Simoneau says is well balanced, creamy and with a full mouth feel. It has a little nuttiness from the oak and a hint of nutmeg, but also bright crisp citrus fruit. It is sourced from around Sonoma County so there is a range of fruit flavors from tropical to melon, apple and peach. It was fermented and aged in barrel and 45% new French oak. It is only available at the winery or through the wine club. Niki Williams has also brought a 2018 Alexander Valley Malbec, which Tom Simoneau calls a “knockout.” Tom Simoneau describes it as a combination of Merlot and Cab. If the color purple had a taste it would be Malbec. She describes it as voluptuous and Barry notes the silky tannins.

Alexandra O'Gorman, Tom Simoneau & Niki Williams. Chateau St. Jean winemaker Niki Williams and Alexandra O'Gorman from Foley Family Wines join Steve Jaxon, Harry Duke and Tom Simoneau on California Wine Country today. Dan Berger is away this week. Alexandra O'Gorman's title is Senior Director of Luxury Sonoma Estates at Foley Family Wines. Niki Williams is the winemaker at Chateau St. Jean winery. Alexandra tells how the company has invested in many family wineries and they have also acquired Chateau St. Jean. They have done renovations to the winery and they have brought winemaking back to Chateau St. Jean. Tom Simoneau tells the story of how a previous owner stopped winemaking on site. Wine has not been made there since 2016, so all the equipment is being renovated and replaced. The estate vineyards are also being refreshed. While they are tasting a Pinot Blanc, Niki Williams tells her winemaking history. With a bachelors degree in English she graduated without “a clue.” She stated doing acting and improv and worked with a travel company where she got an exposure to wine while traveling to Europe. She decided to become a winemaker and studied at UC Davis. She worked at the Starmont winery and for some Constellation wineries, Franciscan, Mt. Veeder and The Prisoner Wine Company. Alexandra O'Gorman describes her job for Foley Family Wines where she oversees several wineries that they have purchased. They focus on a guest experience with fine wine, beautiful locations and new culinary choices. Their first vintage was 1974. Chateau St. Jean is promoting their Summer Fête, a French-themed soirée, on July 9. Tasting Chateau St. Jean Wines They are tasting the Alexander Valley Pinot Blanc. Most of the fruit is from Robert Young vineyards. 40% fermented in barrels and 60% in steel tanks, so it is balanced between the barrel & lees contact flavors and the steely flavors. The Belle Terre Chardonnay is a single-vineyard wine and one of the first. They try to capture the unique terroir of the vineyard. This vineyard is in Alexander Valley in the southern part, close to the Russian River. This is 100% barrel fermented for the creamy mid-pallette texture. It does not get full ML so you also get the fresh acidity. Tom Simoneau compares it to his own Brenda Lee Chardonnay, made similarly. It is less creamy than the Pinot Blanc. The acidity brings out the lovely minerality on the finish, which comes from the soils. The vines have been around since at least the early 70s. Lastly they taste a Pinot Noir, which Niki calls her favorite grape. This is the 2017 Benoit Ranch Pinot Noir. This vineyard is in the northwest corner of Carneros in Sonoma. Tom Simoneau likes the finish, it has a “soft grip.”

I never felt quite at ease with Washington State Wine and so I made it a mission to understand this wine region and get to love it, and I really did come out of the research for this episode with a deeper appreciation for these wines; for the climate, the grapes and the people who make them. If you have ever wondered what Chianti and Southern Washington have in common (said no ever) or if you have ever longed for the path less traveled and the wide open spaces of the west, than Washington State has the wine for you. (Aside: I grew up on the West Coast and have a life long fascination with true crime as a result. Lühisaatesarja “Vala välja veinikool: viinamarjad” teises osas uurime lähemalt Prantsusmaa põneva veinipiirkonna Loire'i oru põhiviinamarja Sauvignon Blanc'i. Maailmaränduriks kujunenud viinamarjast, selle marja ajaloost ja parimatest näidetest räägib stuudios tunnustatud sommeljee Marko Mägi. Loomulikult ei puudu stuudiost ka neli eriilmelist veininäidet, kuid neist kuulete rohkem juba saates! Marja ajalooline kodu asub Prantsusmaal Loire'i orus, kuigi enamus inimesi võiksid selleks kodumaaks pakkuda hoopis mõne Uue-Maailma veinipiirkonna. Esimene teadaolev Sauvignon Blanc'i mainimine kirjanduses pärineb juba aastast 1534. Sauvignon Blanc'ist – mitte küll selle nime all – kirjutas näiteks François Rabelais oma romaanis “Gargantua”. Sauvignon Blanc või teise nimega Sauvage Blanc tähendab otsetõlkes “metsikut valget”. Selline nimi viitab eelkõige marja väljanägemisele ja asjaolule, et tegemist on metsikult arenenud marjaga. Mis puutub aga marja aroomidesse, siis Sauvignon Blanci tunneb enamasti üsna lihtsalt pokaalis ära tugeva, võimendatud musta sõstra lõhna järgi. Muus osas on veinidel tavaliselt tugevad rohelised aroomid, sinna sekka kuuluvad näiteks karusmari, roheline pipar, spargel ja nii edasi. Maitses on veinid aga kerged ja Sauvignon Blanc juuaksegi enamasti ära noore veinina, kuna keldris hoidmine ei anna palju sellele veinile juurde. Muuseas, Sauvignon Blanc on ka Riesling'i kõrval esimesi marju, millest toodetud veini hakati keeratava korgiga pudelitesse villima! Prantsusmaa puhul tasub meeles pidada, et viinamarjade nimesid enamasti pudelile ei märgita. 100% Sauvignon Blanciga on tegemist kindlasti juhul, kui sildilt paistab Pouilly-Fumé apellatsioonide nimi, Sancerre'i apellatsioonis võib roosa ja punase veini puhul kasutada ka Pinot Noir marja (sellest maailma ühest imelisemast ja mitmekihilisemast marjast tuleb juttu ühes järgmises saates)! Sauvignon Blanc on väga gastronoomne vein, mis avanebki paremini just millegi kõrvale rüübates. Milliste toitudega sellest marjast veinid sobivad, mida silmas pidada söökide valimisel? Esiteks seda, et enamasti on Sauvignon Blanc'i puhul tegemist ikkagi pigem kerge veiniga, nii et kerge peaks olema ka toit ja selle valmistuseks valitud tooraine. Teiseks tasub meeles pidada, et kui mõru maitse ei meeldi, siis võiks Sauvignon Blanc'i juues vältida toidus kõike, mis on mõru. Vastasel juhul võimendub just mõru iga suutäie järelmaitses. Sama kehtib näiteks koriandri puhul: kui koriander meeldima juhtub, on see mõistagi hea uudis - Sauvignon Blanc võimendab koriandrit. Suurepärane kombinatsioon tekib aga, kui Sauvignon Blanc'iga panna paari erinevad pika järelmaitsega kitsejuustud. Proovige järele! Rohkem ja põhjalikemaid toidusoovitusi jagab sommeljee juba saates. What happened on that day was not supposed to happen. The French wines, that wines from the upstart Napa Valley were going against, were supposed to put America in its place when it comes to great wine. Lynn Penner-Ash's interest in winemaking grew out of an early passion for the sciences. After a summer working for the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C., she studied botany at the University of California, Davis, the birthplace of the American wine industry. In her junior year she changed her major to viticulture. Then, after working the graveyard shift during crush at Domaine Chandon, she changed her degree to enology. After graduation, Lynn worked at Stag's Leap Wine Cellars, Domaine Chandon, and Chateau St. Jean. Intrigued by the emerging wine industry, she and her husband Ron moved to Oregon in 1988 where she joined Rex Hill Vineyards, becoming the first female winemaker hired in Oregon. Consistently producing award-winning wines, she became Rex Hill Vineyard's president and chief operating officer in 1993 and remained with the winery until 2002. In 1998, Lynn and Ron started Penner-Ash Wine Cellars, carefully crafting small amounts of Pinot Noir and Syrah. Their early success with the label allowed them to dream of what they could create and within a few years they began focusing full time on building Penner-Ash Wine Cellars. In 2005, Lynn and Ron designed and built a sustainable, gravity-flow estate winery surrounded by vineyards, a building that seems to spring from the land itself and reflects the values, spirit, and winemaking philosophy of the couple.
