Hello one and all, and welcome back to another episode of Surviving the Horror. In this month's episode, Colin and Josh sit down to discuss yet another indie horror game from a two person development team. There seems to be something in the special sauce that shines with this combination. Fear the Spotlight marks the third game we've done for this show developed by a two person team, and inspired by the aesthetic and horror games of the PS1 generation. We've covered Crow Country, Signalis, and now Fear the Spotlight, all of which highlight the passion and effort that goes into the creative process with indie titles, and how when done correctly the results truly shine. We start off this episode, as we always do by providing a bit of development history for the game as well as some context behind the publisher and development team. Fear the Spotlight was the first effort of Blumhouse Games Publishing, a studio and brand that formerly had a great deal of success in the horror movie space. Blumhouse saw something special with Fear the Spotlight and offered the development duo Cozy Game Pals more time and resources to flesh out their original idea, and boy are we glad they did. With the help of Blumhouse Cozy Game Pals added a full second chapter to Fear the Spotlight and was able to bring the game over to consoles in addition to its PC release. Fear the Spotlight is the tale of Vivian Singh and Amy Tanaka, following them as they break in to their high school and participate in a séance gone wrong. Heavily inspired by things like Goosebumps, and Fatal Frame, Fear the Spotlight aims to be an approachable entry point for horror enthusiasts, and those new the genre. Josh and Colin think that in this regard, the game truly succeeds. We hope that you enjoy this episode and deep dive, thank you for listening and take care!

Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we begin a new series on 1997's Rare classic, GoldenEye 007. We set the game in its time before getting down to brass tacks, including comparing the experience to the film. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: First full mission (three levels) Issues covered: the license, a bit about the film and the film series, 1997 in games, the flourishing of the first person shooter, late in a console cycle, disparity between PC FPSes and console FPSes, Rare with a lot of games and a lot of further game studios, missing the original controller, remapping shenanigans, threading the needle on a film adaptation, filling in gaps in the license, choosing your exciting set piece, wide level design, the triple cut, Hong Kong cinema, cinematic choices, contrasting with later cinematic games, how many mechanics will you incorporate, chasing this game, choosing different presentation, showing death the character death, an era of accessibility needs recognition, at last listening to our hate mail. Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: Nintendo, Fatal Frame, PlayStation, Pierce Brosnan, Nintendo 64, Sean Bean, Famke Janssen, Alan Cumming, Judi Dench, Desmond Llewelyn, Ralph Fiennes, Daniel Craig, Skyfall, Diablo, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Fallout, Quake, SW: Jedi Knight: DF2, Blood, Outlaws, Turok, Shadow Warrior, Hexen II, Raven Software, 3D Realms, GT Interactive, Duke Nuke'em, Postal, Curse of Monkey Island, Age of Empires, The Last Express, Final Fantasy VII, Colony Wars, Wing Commander: Prophecy, Riven, MYST, XvT, Interstate '76, Mario Kart 64, OddWorld, Grand Theft Auto, Gran Turismo, Diddy Kong Racing, The Stamp brothers, NES, Slalom, Wizards and Warriors, Battletoads, Killer Instinct, Perfect Dark, Microsoft, Viva Pinata, Banjo Kazooie (series), Donkey Kong Country, Silicon Graphics, Timesplitters, Free Radical, John Romero, Majora's Mask, Minish Cap, Metroid Fusion, The Fugitive, Harrison Ford, Mission: Impossible, John Woo, Hard Target, Broken Arrow, Face Off, Metal Gear Solid, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Alpha Protocol, Telltale Games, IO Interactive, Machine Games, Colin "The Shots," Devil May Cry, Dark Souls, Celeste, Luke Harris, Tetris 64, Starfighter/JSF, 343 Industries, Kingdom Hearts (series), Republic Commando, Kirk Hamilton, Aaron Evers, Mark Garcia. It's The State of Gaming Podcast, Popzara's in-depth look at what's shaking up the gaming landscape delivered on a monthly basis. Our hosts Cory Galliher and Nate Evans guide you through the best, worst, and everything else making headlines and headway in the world of interactive entertainment. The Biggest Games of March 2023 The biggest games of the month include: Resident Evil 4 Remake, Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon, The Last of Us Part 1 (PC), Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse, Legend of Heroes: Trails to Azure, Atelier Ryza 3: Alchemist of the End & the Secret Key, and Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty. Other notables include: Sifu (Xbox), Remnant: From the Ashes (Switch), Have a Nice Death, Tchia, and Dead Cells: Return to Castlevania. Circana (Formerly NPD): February 2023 New name, same Mat Piscatella! NPD is now Circana – and remains the gaming industry's best snapshot of what's moving and shaking up both physical and digital retail shelves across the country. All estimates are for entertainment purposes only. Total sales of new gaming hardware and software topped $4.6 billion, a 6 percent increase over last year. On the software charts Warner Bros' Hogwarts Legacy unseats Activison's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Remake for the top spot, while EA's Dead Space remake stays cozy in third. Sony's The Last of Us: Part 1 returns in sixth, EA's Wild Hearts debuts high in eighth, Sega's Like a Dragon: Ishin! enters the list at ninth, while Square Enix's Octopath Traveler II sneaks in at tenth. Elsewhere on the list Nintendo's Kirby's Return to Dream Land debuts at fifteenth, Sega's Company of Heroes 3 lands in sixteenth, Sony's The Last of Us: Part II returns in eighteenth, and Square Enix's Theatrhythm: Final Bar Line rounds out the list in twentieth. Everything Else But there's more! E3, formerly the biggest gaming event in the world, has been canceled yet again. Maybe this time for keeps? Sony's The Last of Us renaissance continues with the release of The Last of Us: Part I on PC…but was it worth the wait? Warner Bros' Smash Bros. ripoff homage MultiVersus is set to be shut down this summer – but will it return? Word on the street Sony's PSVR2 isn't selling that hot – but Cory still loved it anyway! Will 2023 be the year that game movies finally take off? Apple TV's Tetris and Pinball: The Man Who Saved the Game provide some biographical references for game/movie fans everywhere – all from the comfort of home. Check out our interview with the Pinball directors when you're done listening to this!

There's a lot to be said for fans. Sure, it's fashionable these days to discard their views - such as when they say bad movies like the Star Wars sequels are bad, and don't @ me - but they also do a lot to keep their favorite franchises going even when nobody else will.

It's October, so you know we have to cliche it up and roll out at least one episode about a scary game. And for my money, scary games don't get much better than Dead Space. This bad boy is hella fun to play, and it's scary as fuck, too!   Resident Evil 4 was my first real experience with a "horror" game, and I loved it. When I saw Dead Space, I thought "that looks like a better Resident Evil 4". And I don't think it's a hot take to put these games in the same S Tier of survival horror. Two of the best to ever do it.    My buddy Patrick returns to the show this week, and we spent an hour talking about why the game mechanics, controls, sound, atmosphere, and practically everything else about Dead Space is almost perfect. If you haven't played it yet, hopefully we can convince you to grab your plasma cutter (and a change of pants) and give it a shot!   And before we enter zero gravity, I toss together another edition of the 'Remember The Game? Infamous Intro'!   This week, we talk about the spring system I use here on RTG. Someone asks my gaming experience is different when I play a game for the podcast vs just playing it for fun. And do you ever feel guilty about playing video games??   Plus we have another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This one features 3 more survival horror heavies: F.E.A.R. 2, Fatal Frame, and Condemned: Criminal Origins.   Are you on social media? Of course you are. When watching a scary movie, sometimes the creepiest thing about them can be five little words that come on screen just before the first scene begins, "based on a true story." When the idea of what your watching has actually happened it makes the experience just that much more bone-chilling... so imagine what it's like when those five words appear on the title screen of a video game. Welcome to Pop Culture Legends, a Digital Dissection mini-series! Today's episode is about the mystery surrounding the Himuro Mansion, the setting of the hit video game Fatal Frame and whether or not it is as haunted as the game series makes it seem. Stories of dead investigators, ghosts, and walls covered in bloody handprints flooded message boards on the internet at the turn of the century, all claiming that not only is the Himuro Mansion real: but that it was really haunted as well.
