Since its premiere at Chicago's Cinepocalypse festival, Glenn Danzig's directorial debut Verotika has gone down in legend. Not a good legend, but then as Countess Elizabeth Bathory would tell you not all legends are good. This week on Pop Screen, Ewan Gleadow from Cult Following rejoins us to discuss Danzig's three-part magnum opus, based on stories from his own Verotik comics imprint. Along the way we discuss the first story's strange Los Francegeles setting, the challenges of writing Tales from the Crypt-style horror shorts, Danzig's comments at the film's premiere and the diminishing returns of Satanic shock tactics. We also discuss the real body horror that's just off-screen, namely whether Glenn Danzig can escape his fate of becoming more meme than man. If you don't want to see us reduced to starring in Verotika 2 in order to pay the rent, you can donate to our Patreon, where you can get a monthly bonus episode of this show, exclusive access to our other movie podcast Director's Lottery, Graham's twice-weekly Doctor Who reviews and more. Glenn Danzig premiered Verotika, his adult actress led turd burger of a horror anthology at the 2019 Cinepocalypse film festival in Chicago to hysterical, gut-wrenching laughter. He was less than pleased. This week, The Ghouldaddy Himself, The Fun-Ghoul Outta Jersey, and Just Dan put themselves through an ordeal of cruel and unusual punishment (and several alcoholic beverages) to bring you their review (er, riff?) of quite possibly one of the worst heaping piles of shit ever conceptualized, let alone actually put on the big screen. Verotika's got it all: Parisian hookers with eyes for nipples, a man-spider... man, a killer stripper with an obsession for faces, and a 30-minute segment of "Elizabeth Bathory" bathing in blood. This abomination of putrescent film has something for everyone with no self-respect! It's been a long while since I was contacted about possible interviews, probably because there has been a lot going in the world or more than likely, I've been too busy to reply every single one. Well here are two I simply did not want to pass up because I thoroughly enjoyed the films we discuss. First up, as you heard during Episode 185, I sang the praises of I Blame Society, the latest from Gillian Wallace Horvat. For 15 minutes, we talk about what it was like making one of the year's best films so far and a whole lot more. Right after that, a longer discussion ensues with Mike P. Nelson who previously helmed The Domestics, a favorite from Cinepocalypse where it premiered here in Chicago. This time, he's responsible for a terrific remake / reboot of Wrong Turn. Surprisingly enough, this updating comes from the original screenwriter as well making some big changes along the way. Thanks so much to my great, very talented guests for their insights and delights. A couple more bonus episodes are coming before the next director-centric episode in mid-March. 00:00 - 06:35 - Intro 06:36 - 20:25 - Gillian Wallace Horvat (I Blame Society) 20:26 - 52:02 - Mike P. Catching up here with a couple of really great conversations I had with two independent filmmakers as well as a producer! Director Matthew Ross worked with actors like Michael Shannon on FRANK & LOLA previously, which captured the attention of Keanu Reeves who saught him out to work on a script by A SIMPLE PLAN's Scott Smith entitled SIBERIA. It's part thriller, part diamond heist story, mostly character study highlighted by an understated Reeves performance and a memorable setting. I talked with Matthew about what it's like working with Keanu Reeves, Scott Smith's screenplay, as well as some of the hurdles of the filmmaking process. Immediately after, you'll hear some Cinepocalypse coverage since I was able to snag an interview with director Johnny Kervorkian as well as producer Jack Tarling about their terrific Christmas sci-fi horror tale AWAIT FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS, which has been compared to both Black Mirror & THE THING. You'll be surprised to discover the source of inspiration for the story (courtesy of The National) as well as many other great anecdotes from the British team. SIBERIA will be out soon and hopefully AWAIT FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS will find distribution within the year too! Thank you to all three of my guests and for listening. Even if you're not familiar with the names, the interviews were great and I truly hope you'll support the work of these fine independent filmmakers. 00:00 - 08:08 - Introduction 08:09 - 27:34 - Interview w/Matthew Ross 27:35 - 42:47 - Interview w/Johnny + Jack 42:48 - 43:46 - Outro More on SIBERIA: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6494418/ More on AWAIT FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4971408/

One of the greatest joys to experience in the fine city of Chicago is seeing a screening of a classic film at The Music Box Theater. It has been my favorite movie theater for quite some time and when the opportunity came to talk to the general manager of this theater, I could not have been more thrilled. Ryan Oestreich has a long history with the film industry, particularly film festival programming and theater management. He is now able to combine both of his passions alongside Josh Goldbloom, to put together a film festival that I can't wait to cover this summer: The Cinepocalypse! Ryan and I briefly cover his past experience and then we launch into our endless excitement for the many films and special events happening from June 21st to the 28th. You can listen to us passionately talk about some of the titles we're looking forward to of course, but also be sure to visit the links below to buy a festival badge or tickets to any number of screenings coming up in about a month. Ryan is a hard-working, energetic guest with a lot to contribute so even if you're not in the Chicagoland area and have no familiarity with the Music Box, I have no doubt that as a movie fanatic, you'll find a lot to enjoy throughout our conversation.
