This Warner Bros. 1944 episode makes good use of Warner Bros.' A-list stars, A-list character actors, B-list stars, and B-list character actors. Casablanca and Maltese Falcon alumni converge in both Michael Curtiz's Passage to Marseille, starring Humphrey Bogart as a morally compromised hero, with Claude Rains and Sydney Greenstreet as the patriotic and pro-fascist alternatives for occupied France; while in Jean Negulesco's The Mask of Dimitrios, a Citizen Kane-like story of a self-made criminal without a Rosebud, Peter Lorre and Greenstreet form an unlikely friendship that reminds Elise more of Eric Blore and Edward Everett Horton than of Laurel and Hardy. We discuss the ways in which Curtiz finds the noir in his war movie and Negulesco finds the buddy comedy in his noir. For our Universal 1942 episode, a very odd pairing: The Mad Doctor of Market Street, a mad scientist/ocean liner comedy/island adventure movie directed by low-budget noir auteur Joseph H. Lewis, and Alfred Hitchcock's first fully American movie, Saboteur, a fugitive-on-the-run thriller. We dissect the depiction of the fictional islanders in The Mad Doctor of Market Street and the movie's deconstruction of the science/magic dichotomy, before moving on to Saboteur's leftist take on fascism in the United States. And in our Fear and Moviegoing in Toronto segment, we talk about Ozu's A Hen in the Wind and Curtiz's Angels with Dirty Faces, which have nothing in common but very emotional endings. Mindframes hosts Michael Cockerill and Dave Canfield join me for this special tribute to honor our dear friend Sergio Mims. Several years ago, I did an episode on one of his favorite directors, Michael Curtiz. Of course you are encouraged to listen to that. But I asked Mike & Dave to join me to revisit two titles in particular from Curtiz as well as recommend several others as a way of honoring the memory of Sergio. Perhaps one of these films is an all-time classic called CASABLANCA? In addition, we review a couple of recent titles like RRR and AFTERSUN. Not only that, but after our conversation, you'll get to hear Sergio one last time on this show. Over a year ago, we did a Patreon exclusive episode on THE CHARGE OF THE LIGHT BRIGADE, only not the Curtiz version surprisingly. Wanted everyone to hear Sergio's thoughts on that excellent film since it steps things up and is more faithful to the true story than Curtiz's take. Thank you so much for listening and mucho gratitude to Mike and Dave for coming on to talk some classics. We briefly mention our love of DOCTOR X, KING CREOLE and THE SEA WOLF! This will be the week remembered as 'When we didn't watch Morbius'. As such only Tosin made it to the cinema to see Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Almost made him wonder if Morbius might have been a better shout. At Home, Sharon catches up with the last season of The Last Kingdom, Holly Catches Jessica Chastain on Oscar winning form in The eyes of Tammy Faye on Disney + and Tosin finds a (ex)Netflix hidden gem in Curtiz. Is Netflix killing cinemas? Each week we weigh up what we've seen in cinemas with what we've watched online at home and figure out which provided the best time. At least, we did before COVID jumped in and declared Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney + and friends the winner. Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we usually talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they produced in between! Today we give you a themed episode! As 2022 approaches, we dive deep into New Years-set movies through the years. We start with Michael Curtiz's influential Mystery of the Wax Museum, move over to the modern cult classic 200 Cigarettes, and finish with the 2006 remake/flop Poseidon. This is an eclectic mix! Curtiz is one of our great filmmakers and it's fascinating his Wax Museum, which came before his stone-cold classics Captain Blood, Casablanca, and The Adventures of Robin Hood. And 200 Cigarettes features perhaps the most specific, wonderful 1999-represented cast ever. Finally, Poseidon is certainly a film that was made and then released into theaters. We discuss the holiday itself and why exactly it is something we celebrate, the B-Side-y career of the sneaky interesting actor Josh Lucas, and the seminal, early run of MTV Films. Be sure to give us a follow on Twitter and Facebook at @TFSBSide. Also enter our giveaways, get access to our private Slack channel, and support new episodes by becoming a Patreon contributor. We are also now on Spotify and Stitcher. Enjoy!

This week on THE ELLROY BOYS... Brendan and Sam are joined by dear friend and honorary Ellroy Boy, jack, the perfume nationalist, to discuss a mutual favorite work, James M. Cain's masterpiece, Mildred Pierce. And while we spend some time talking about the book, its origin, and all of it's adaptations, we concentrate on the best one: the Michael Curtiz version. It's a bizarre and baroque masterpiece and we celebrate it's strange power, the torrid and fascinating life of Joan Crawford, how the film revolves around unspoken & unrequited incestuous lesbian longing, the brilliance of Curtiz, why it's not a feminist picture, Cain's big 3, the madness of actors, and much, much more. Thirtysomething is even talked about. On another note, Blauer is unfortunately not on the episode but he's absolutely there in spirit. This is our second look at a Cain noir, so go ahead and re-listen to the Double Indemnity episode if you need a primer. featuring jack @lotus__point, brendan @luso_brendan, and sam @rubberwidow

It's important to discover films before our time... On this episode we go to something that is near and dear our bosses heart; old movies. With the TCM Classic Film Festival kicking off online today until May 9th. It's running at two virtual venues at the TCM Network and the Classics Curated by TCM Hub over at HBO Max in the States. 'Doctor X' and the horror films of Michael Curtiz is helping kick off the fest in style. This 1932 recently restored version premiered recently on TCM. The new two-color Technicolor master was restored by UCLA Film and Television Archive and The Film Foundation in association with Warner Bros. Entertainment. In 'Doctor X' New York City reporter Lee Taylor (Lee Tracy) is doing a piece on a series of grisly, cannibalistic murders that have all been committed under a full moon. Police soon begin to suspect that the murderer works at the lab of Dr. Jerry Xavier (Lionel Atwill), a mysterious Long Island researcher who is doing an investigation of his own. Antsy for an inside story, Taylor breaks into the lab, where he meets and falls in love with Dr. Xavier's daughter Joan (Fay Wray). Academy Award—winning director Michael Curtiz (1886—1962) — whose best-known films include Casablanca (1942), Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942), Mildred Pierce (1945) and White Christmas (1954) — was in many ways the anti-auteur. During his unprecedented twenty-seven year tenure at Warner Bros., he directed swashbuckling adventures, westerns, musicals, war epics, romances, historical dramas, horror films, tearjerkers, melodramas, comedies, and film noir masterpieces. The director's staggering output of 180 films surpasses that of the legendary John Ford and exceeds the combined total of films directed by George Cukor, Victor Fleming, and Howard Hawks. Classic cinema is Alan's DNA and a particular expert since he wrote a comprehensive biography on the career of Curtiz and serves as a producer and programmer in his own right on several festivals. In advance of the TCM Classic Film Festival we got to talk with Alan about 'Doctor X' why this was such a unique period in cinema history and why so many noted filmmakers have gotten to use horror as a proving ground for the work they are doing.

Jonas Högberg & Anders Hultqvist celebrate the twentieth episode of English speaking Pod Hard with a swashbuckler-special! Three adventure movies directed by Michael Curtiz and starring Errol Flynn are on the menu today. To help seal the deal the Pod Hard-duo is accompanied by their first guest: Alex Rallo, better known as the enigmatic and all-knowing action connoisseur @HeadExposure on Twitter. Alex is a die hard fan of swashbucklers and brings class, wit and analytical prowess to the proceedings. Needless to say, Jonas and Anders are relieved to finally be joined by a smart person. The tantalizing threesome discuss mighty naval battles, the sounds of arrows, fencing shadows, people falling like fruit from trees, how to capture several levels of action in one shot and the tumultuous relationship between Curtiz and Flynn. And of course, a big shout out to Olivia de Havilland, now 104 years young! "We'll board a ship that's not sinking!" The movies: Captain Blood (1935) The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) The Sea Hawk (1940)

"Play it once, Sam. For old time's sake. Play it, Sam." Michael Curtiz's 1942 film Casablanca never seemed to be on track to become a classic. It only fell into that mold after the fact, and maybe that's why it seems to work so well – it doesn't feel like it's carrying any of that ‘award film' baggage. It's just a smartly written script with great characters performed by brilliant actors. Everything seemed to have worked. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we kick off our Ingrid Bergman series with Curtiz's Casablanca. We look at why we love this film so much and why it still works so well. We talk about the central performances – Humphrey Bogart, Bergman, Paul Henreid, Claude Rains – not to mention the rest of the cast, and why they feel so perfect for this film. We chat about Curtiz and his directing. And we look at the music, notably the song “As Time Goes By.” It's a beautiful film that still works on every level. We love it and have a great time talking about it on the show this week. So check it out then tune in! The Next Reel – when the movie ends, our conversation begins. Crooked Table Podcast - The world of film from a fresh angle
In Episode 93 of the Crooked Table Podcast, Robert Yaniz Jr. recruits his mom, Jeannine Yaniz, for her podcast debut, as they discuss the joys of the holiday season as well as the latter's long-standing love of the 1954 musical White Christmas. Starring Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen, the film capitalizes on not only the enduring appeal of its four stars but the iconic titular song. As directed by Michael Curtiz (Casablanca), White Christmas is emblematic of the heyday of big Hollywood musicals. Brimming with memorable tunes, epic dance sequences and witty one-liners, the film emerged as the most successful film the year it was released and remains an annual tradition for many looking to travel back to an era where the promise of song and dance drew massive crowds and when Crosby's warm vocals were the world's most sought-after special effects. On this episode, we discuss how White Christmas has aged in the decades since its release, our dissenting opinions of its relevance as a "Christmas movie" and determine which cast member is really the film's most formidable secret weapon. Also: find out which star served as a last-minute replacement for another iconic performer. So bundle up, and let's celebrate the holiday with the voice of Christmas himself, Mr. Bing Crosby, and his most enduring musical comedy. We're joined by Birmingham blogger Laura Creaven (www.constantlycurious.co.uk) for a discussion of our fourth Michael Curtiz film, the film noir Mildred Pierce. We're glad of her perspective, as this is a film all about women, their relationships and desires. We discuss the film's flashback structure - though it helped the film get made in the Hays Code era, would the film be even stronger with a simple chronological plot? Class is everywhere too, motivating the mother-daughter conflict that's central to the film, and we consider America's class system and social mobility, and whether you could tell this story in Britain. We look closely at Curtiz's use of shadows and mirrors to imply off-screen space and create meaningful, poetic images. And there's a lot to discuss in the construction of the characters, both male and female - we think about how masculine and feminine characteristics are deployed in both, and how roles are reversed. Mike and Laura talk about how they each had differing attitudes to the framing device of showing the climax first, Mike wanting to know how the film would tie its plot up and Laura not caring very much. It reminds Mike of discussing Carmen Maria Machado's brilliant short story The Husband Stitch (free to read here: www.granta.com/the-husband-stitch) with previous podcast guest Celia, and finding a similar difference in the experience. Mildred Pierce is without question a film aimed at women, but as a film noir does the framing device work to capture their interest? And indeed, how much is the film a noir? With shadows and murder and intrigue, it's inseparable from it, but there's a lightness to the image and combination with family drama that serves to adjust it. To José the film is unambiguously noir; to Mike and Laura, the noir elements invade an otherwise normal world in interesting ways. Recorded on 27th November 2018.

After watching it for the first time, we discuss the 1938 film based on an old English legend starring Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland. Sometimes you just can't help the way things work out. The lion's share of this "lost" episode was recorded in November of 2015. The new wrap-around intro and outro was recorded in February of 2016. Today we decided to quit sitting on it and just release the thing. Unfortunately, no sooner than we began uploading to file to our podcast host, then it was discovered that Madeleine Lebeau has died at the age of 92. Lebeau was considered by many to be the last living cast member of Casablanca. After careful consideration, we've decided to release the "lost" CASABLANCA episode as originally planned and hope that people understand the context under which it was created and posted, and don't see it as an insensitive traffic grab on our parts. We're saddened to learn of the passing of this remarkable actress, who (in real life) escaped Nazi-occupied France with her then-husband, who also appears in the film. Our thoughts and sympathies go out to Ms. Lebeau, her family, and her loved ones. Casablanca, a story about love, passion, espionage, intrigue, action, and more than a few laughs is a favorite of one of the Nighthawks hosts, and is a new acquisition of the other. In this episode we discuss the classic old Hollywood favorite and why it still seems to work all of these years later.
No bah hum-buggin around Director's Club this time of year. I managed to enlist two of my favorite people to listen to -- of course, former co-host and podcast emeritus Patrick Ripoll is back not only for Episode 99, but for Episode 100 in January! Also recruited this time is the great Sergio Mims of WHPK, who always comes on this time of year to talk about a classic director. This time, we're focusing on the anti-auteur Michael Curtiz. Yes, he did CASABLANCA, one of the greatest films ever made, but we touch on a myriad of other titles including THE PRIVATE LIVES OF ELIZABETH & ESSEX, THE SEA HAWK, THE BREAKING POINT, FLAMINGO ROAD, DODGE CITY and so much more! There's a brief mention of STAR WARS at the very end as well as a welcome (?) digression Jim and Patrick style as they attempt to wrap things up. The big news is that Episode 100 is finally arriving in two weeks. It will be a combination Best of 2015 episode of course, but joining us is friend and favorite Bill Ackerman, who will be asking us questions about what it's like hosting Director's Club. - William Wallace
Of all the podcasts in all the world, 1942's Casablanca had to be talked about on this episode of Zach on Film. Casablanca is a 1942 American romantic drama film directed by Michael Curtiz and based on Murray Burnett and Joan Alison's un-produced stage play Everybody Comes to Rick's. The film stars Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, and Paul Henreid; and features Claude Rains, Conrad Veidt, Sydney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre, and Dooley Wilson. Set during World War II, it focuses on a man torn between, in the words of one character, "love and virtue". He must choose between his love for a woman and helping her Czech Resistance leader husband escape the Vichy-controlled Moroccan city of Casablanca to continue his fight against the Nazis. Story editor Irene Diamond convinced producer Hal Wallis to purchase the film rights to the play in January 1942. Brothers Julius J. and Philip G. Epstein were initially assigned to write the script. However, despite studio resistance, they left after the attack on Pearl Harbor to work on Frank Capra's Why We Fight series. Howard Koch was assigned to the screenplay until the Epsteins returned. Casey Robinson assisted with three weeks of rewrites, but his work would later go uncredited. Wallis chose Curtiz to direct the film after his first choice, William Wyler, became unavailable. Filming began on May 25, 1942, and ended on August 3, and was shot entirely at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, with the exception of one sequence at Van Nuys Airport in Van Nuys. Although Casablanca was an A-list film with established stars and first-rate writers, no one involved with its production expected it to be anything out of the ordinary. It was just one of hundreds of pictures produced by Hollywood every year. Show your thanks to Major Spoilers for this episode by becoming a Major Spoilers VIP. It will help ensure Zach on Film continues far into the future! A big Thank You goes out to everyone who downloads, subscribes, listens, and supports this show.
