In this week's episode we continue our journey through Horror comedy with Chelsea Stardust's 2019 feature debut Satanic Panic. This movie is an absolute riot and this episode was a blast. We discuss Grady Hendrix's work and his foray into screenwriting, and how his fingerprints are all over this movie. We get into the film's tone, and how it draws from the 70s and 80s, as well how the film balances it's tone perfectly. We talk about the characters, the acting and how refreshing it is having a very female focused protagonist and antagonist. We also take a detour into Satanism 101 as we discuss rituals, demons, the era of satanic panic and our own personal beliefs. All of this and a lot more in another weird, wonderful and fun filled episode. Find us on Social Media: Twitter: SIMAHFPOD instagram: soimarriedahorrorfan Tumblr: soimarriedahorrorfan

Off Script! is a series in which we talk to filmmakers, film tourists, and anyone who's interested in the industry.
This week Drusilla and Josh watch David Cronenberg's "Crash" with filmmaker Chelsea Stardust, which Wikipedia describes as follows: "Crash is a 1996 psychological thriller film written, produced and directed by David Cronenberg, based on J. G. Ballard's 1973 novel of the same name. Starring James Spader, Deborah Kara Unger, Elias Koteas, Holly Hunter and Rosanna Arquette, it follows a film producer who becomes involved with a group of symphorophiliacs who are strangely aroused by car crashes." Just in time for Mother's Day! But first...Everybody hates their moms, Chelsea watched "Eyes of Fire" from the All the Haunts Be Ours boxset from Severin films, "Stepford Wives", "Petite Maman", "We're All Going to the World's Fair", "Bunny Lake is Missing", "Kalifornia." Drusilla watched "Arsenic and Old Lace" at The New Beverly, "Reds", Josh rewatched "American Psycho" and the gang goes off on director Mary Harron and "I Shot Andy Warhol".Then the gang gets into the feature. James Spader (not David Spade) eats a lot of ass in this. This film was sexually liberating for college-aged Chelsea and Drusilla both. We get a graphic designer's perspective on the credits, they discuss the marriage at the center of the film, they discuss the film's legacy from Cannes and the critical response and cultural homophobia. Francis Ford Coppola is a nerd. Josh worries about people being prudes these days. Rosanna Arquette keeps joints in her leg compartment. Chelsea doesn't think people should lick fresh tattoos, testing films sucks, and then they play Have They Seen It?Chelsea's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/chelseastardust/Website: http://www.bloodhauspod.com Twitter: https://twitter.com/BloodhausPodInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/bloodhauspod/Email: bloodhauspod@gmail.comDrusilla's art: https://www.sisterhydedesign.com/Drusilla's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hydesister/Drusilla's Letterboxd: https://letterboxd.com/drew_phillips/Joshua's website: https://www.joshuaconkel.com/Joshua's Twitter: https://twitter.com/JoshuaConkel Joshua's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/joshua_conkel/Joshua's Letterboxd: https://letterboxd.com/joshuaconkel/
One of the rare Stephen King books that hasn't been adapted, Joyland is a quick, breezy read about a broken-hearted teenager who works at a dilapidated (and haunted) amusement park where he finds new love and even a ghost or two.

It's showtime! This week's co-host is Chelsea Stardust, director of the horror comedy Satanic Panic, along with All That We Destroy, which was part of Blumhouse's Into the Dark series on Hulu. The character that made her feel seen? Fellow goth only-child Lydia Deetz of Beetlejuice, of course. Long before she was a rising star in horror cinema, Chelsea was a Midwestern kid with a love for the strange and unusual. The first time she saw Beetlejuice, she recognized herself in young Lydia Deetz, from her dark sensibilities to her love of photography. In This week, Chelsea tells Jordan what she learned by embracing her inner Lydia.Plus (speaking of Showtime): How is Jordan feeling now that Season One of Yellowjackets is in the books? Satisfied? Bereft? Reeling? Well stay tuned and she'll tell you! Follow us on Twitter, Instagram, and FacebookWith Jordan Crucchiola and Chelsea Stardust

The time is nigh! From the black and white world, Candace and Ariel are hanging out with filmmaker Chelsea Stardust for our annual Vintage Halloween episode, where we discuss some of the most festive pre-1970 horror films. Get ready for this triple feature - spanning three decades, we've got atmospheric and suspenseful psychological classic Cat People (1942), followed by Hammer campfest The Curse of Frankenstein (1952 - and in color!), in which Peter Cushing is toxic in his little outfits. Last up, low-budget indie nightmare of our hearts, Carnival of Souls (1962). In case you're wondering, there is a common theme in these movies, but you gotta listen to find out. We can't just give you everything in the description, okay? We can give you Chelsea's amazing Halloween mix though! Joining the conversation is famed producer and William Castle's daughter, Terry Castle, as well as her son, filmmaker Kyle Newell, who share stories of what it's like to grow up in a family whose lineage is committed to fright. Then, acclaimed director Chelsea Stardust stops by to talk about the profound impact Castle has had on her own work...and how his influence continues to be felt in the horror films of today. From Joan Crawford to electrified seats, this episode has it all! Go!

Hang your stockings by the chimney with care, and don't forget to leave a gift for Billy under the tree, Aughtsterion fans, because this time around Jordan and Sam are joined by director Chelsea Stardust to discuss Black XMas from 2006. It's got a hall of fame cast, excessive amounts of eye trauma, impeccable Christmas vibes, a bad attitude, and a completely outrageous villain origin story. In other words, it's tank top horror all the way down to its bones. In addition to taking the Christ out of Christmas, Sam, Jordan, and Chelsea are here to call for justice for director Glen Morgan, and for an end to the disrespect heaped on fans of 2000s era terror. Ho ho ho, and in the words of Leigh Colvin, "Fuck you Santa Claus." Produced by: Jordan Crucchiola Music by: Sam Wineman

In our lead up to International Podcast Day, I was lucky enough to sit down with an accomplished, actor, writer, director, and most recently, podcaster in Matthew Currie Holmes. MCH, as he's known, started the Couch Trip Cinema podcast so he could share his experiences in film, along with his guests perspectives regarding their time and work in the film industry. Such esteemed guests of his have included Brea Grant, Gavin Michael Booth, and Chelsea Stardust, and he assures me that there are some very exciting guests in the future as well. But what about MCH himself? Well, his resume reads like a best of list; he started out in Canada as a PA working on films like Shanghai Noon, and from there things really blossomed for Holmes. He went on to land roles in films like Wrong Turn 2 and The Fog before he really found his passion in screenwriting and directing. His debut feature film, The Curse of Buckout Road was released in late 2019, and has been the recipient of numerous awards. So today the tables have been turned on the incredible MCH, and he gets to share his insights and stories about the film industry, and what it's like to have a podcast of his own. Despite his thinking I was going to edit this interview down, I just couldn't. Everything he has to say is interesting and full of passion, but you'll just have to listen for yourself. It's a good'n. And now, the epic conclusion! Recorded LIVE for the Chattanooga Film Festival on May 24, 2020

Coralie Fargeat is a French writer and director who made her feature film debut with 2017's Revenge, now streaming on Shudder. Coralie started her career in France as an AD, and shortly after realizing that she wanted to be a director, she made a short and took it on the festival circuit. The short opened many doors for her, and from there, she wrote multiple screenplays and took writing classes, all of which collectively helped her find her voice as a filmmaker. This path led her to pitching the concept of Revenge to multiple producers, ultimately striking a deal. In this interview, we hear more details about Coralie's filmmaker origin story, how to be an assertive director, and tips for creating your own local filmmaking community and support system. All of this, and so much more on today's episode of The Nick Taylor Horror Show. Here are some key takeaways from this conversation with Coralie: Prep your materials. In addition to the script for Revenge, Coralie wrote a 40-page treatment that described the story, plot, subtext, and visual cues in stark detail. This really conveyed to producers that she had a real clear vision for this project. She also did a ripomatic treatment reel that showcased tonal references of music, movie clips, and images that further defined the movie. All of which gave the producers more confidence in the movie and in her. Conflicts are inevitable. Sometimes in the heat of the moment on a grueling set while you're over time and over budget, you don't always have time to explain things. And as much as I hate to say it, according to many directors, sometimes you don't always have time to be nice. Yes, as a director, you should strive to make every effort to be as respectful and kind to your cast and crew as possible, and as Chelsea Stardust mentioned in a previous episode when it comes to filmmaking, “it's chaos, be kind.” However, throughout the course of making films sometimes, you will have to enter conflicts assertively so you can get what you need. There's a difference between being an asshole and being strategically aggressive. If you're a miserable fuck face on set who yells and screams all day every day, your crew will check out instantly and underperform. And you'll deserve it. But if you're too nice, you run the risk of being taken advantage of. There's no clear answer here, but this is an eventual scenario that all directors will have to face and figure out on their own. Coralie discussed her own struggles with this, but how inevitably, she had to get things done her way by whooping some asses here and there, but she did so strategically. Eli Roth tells a story about the first day on the set of Hostel. He and a bunch of his crew members bonded over drinks the night before production, and he went back to his hotel room early, but the crew stayed out drinking and showed up on set completely hungover. Thinking that Eli was their friend, they felt entitled enough to do this without consequences. They were wrong. As a result, they dragged ass on set, and without batting an eye, Eli yelled and screamed at the guilty parties and even fired some of them. As harsh as this may sound, this set a precedent on his sets that this type of behavior will not be tolerated. If it's not your nature to be aggressive or assertive, it's important that you think about the bigger picture. Coralie touched on something so obvious but I rarely hear directors mention it, and that is that you are going to have to live with your film for the rest of your life. Every frame, every detail, every decision will be etched in stone. So those moments on set when you have to fight to get what you need or fight to get something done the right way, are all worthwhile battles because you only get one shot. Film is permanent. Do not let anybody off the hook, especially yourself. Stare into the void. If you're a first time filmmaker, nothing can prepare you for your first movie. Yes, make shorts, go to film school, read Making Movies by Sydney Lumet, and watch every single special feature making-off that you can. But, things will inevitably go wrong, there will be things you don't know how to handle, crew members may turn on you, effects may break down, and that scene you agonized over, might not end up working. Now, the way that you respond to these things, the way that you handle yourself when you're at the mercy of all the things that go wrong on set, that's directing. Coralie mentioned how her work as an AD led her to realize that directing is problem-solving. Because of this, she was able to approach her first film with confidence, despite not entirely knowing what she was doing. But, she figured it out along the way and made a kickass movie regardless. A lot of would-be directors get daunted by the thought of their first movie or spend too much time preparing, or over-educating themselves instead of just doing it. Successful first-time filmmaking is a messy process and largely a matter of jumping head first into a difficult shoot and flailing your way through to make your days and somehow, by the grace of god, making a good movie in spite of it all. As important as preparation and education are, as a filmmaker, you can never be fully prepared for the difficulties your movies will bring you. You'll simply gradually get better with every single film that you make. So if you're approaching your first film, embrace feeling stupid, embrace feeling unprepared, embrace impostor syndrome, and embrace the fact that you don't really know what you're doing. Because nobody ever really does until they get a few films under their belt. Build a collective. I was shocked to hear Coralie mention that horror and genre films were not widely accepted in France despite the French extremist horror movement. As a result, Coralie built a community of other aspiring genre filmmakers who would learn from each other, pool resources, and ultimately become a support system. They would even invite industry professionals, like writers, directors, and producers, to share their experiences on filmmaking and work with first-time filmmakers. These kinds of relationships are priceless. Not just from a networking perspective but from a life perspective. As the saying goes, you become the sum total of the five people you spend the most amount of time with, so if you want to be a filmmaker, spend time around other filmmakers. Are you in a small town with not a lot of film people? Turn to social media, hold meetings via Skype, Zoom, or whatever. OR, start a podcast :) You'll need a community, a family, to fall back on when the going gets tough, and Coralie attributes her ability to overcome the many difficulties she experienced producing her first movie, to this community that she built. So find your tribe or build it from scratch. ----- Produced by Simpler Media
We decide to go back and take a look at last year's Fangoria Presents Satanic Panic. I did a review of this back when I was without a cohost. I told my sister Mandy about this film. We dipped back into the Shudder library this week for the 2019 horror/comedy Satanic Panic by director Chelsea Stardust and enjoyed the flowing story and unique perspective this movie provides. It's rare that we get strong female leads presented through the lens of a female director, so when we do, it's great to see such an enjoyably successful film. As always, we'd love to hear what you thought of this one. It's striking to me to consider that typing such a simple description for a film, and feeling like I may be submitting a notion with some socio-political statement, but that's still the world in 2020. Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. A lot of horror comedies can be pretty politically incorrect. And as a result can be considered amateurish, simply not funny, or even offensive. But the new film SATANIC PANIC (2019) is none of these things. It is pretty funny, doesn’t have the pitfalls of independent films, and is directed by a woman (Chelsea Stardust), co-produced by a woman (Amanda Presmyk), and starring almost entirely of women. And its pedigree comes with the fact the story is by horror film veteran Ted Geoghegan (WE ARE STILL HERE (2015)). Samantha (Hayley Griffith) has started her first day as a pizza delivery girl. Unfortunately most of her salary is based off tips, but so far its been pretty rough. Folks have given her little consideration and many customers have been eccentrics. As the day ends, she is offered to deliver a super large order to a wealthy section of the city, hoping to get a gigantic tip. After delivering the order to a mansion, she once again discovers she is stiffed of a tip. Samantha decides to confront the customer before leaving but finds herself in a situation she never ever expected. Rebecca Romijn (X-MEN (2000)) stars along with Ruby Modine (HAPPY DEATH DAY (2017)) and new comer Hayley Griffith as Samantha. Director Chelsea Stardust comes from the Blumhouse movie “factory” having worked on many films there. Dark Discussions takes a look at this new horror film that was partly funded by Fangoria magazine. Chelsea Stardust has been a horror film fan since the age of 10. After working for comedy legends Ivan Reitman and Judd Apatow, Chelsea found her horror home at Blumhouse Productions, where she served as the executive assistant to Jason Blum for several years. Chelsea’s first feature film, the science fiction thriller All That We Destroy, was part of Blumhouse series 'Into The Dark' and is currently available on Hulu. Her second feature film, the horror comedy Satanic Panic, written by novelist Grady Hendrix, and produced by Fangoria and Cinestate, releases nationwide theatrically, on VOD and digital HD on September 6th. The movie that Chelsea chose to discuss is near and dear to our hearts - Mary Harron's American Psycho. She and April go in deep on the making of the film - from the writing of the script by former Switchblade Sisters guest Guinevere Turner, to the studio's objection to the casting of Christian Bale. They dive into the film's portrayal of male vanity, the performance of Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman, and the difficult job of balancing horror and comedy in one movie. Plus they also discuss Chelsea's latest film Satanic Panic. You can see Satanic Panic on September 6th. And if you haven't seen American Psycho yet, go watch it! With April Wolfe and Chelsea Stardust. You can let us know what you think of Switchblade Sisters on Twitter or Facebook. Or email us at switchbladesisters@maximumfun.org. Produced by Casey O'Brien and Laura Swisher. Edited by Jordan Kauwling for MaximumFun.org.

Chelsea Stardust is the director of two new fantastic horror features; FANGORIA's Satanic Panic and Blumhouse's All That We Destroy. Chelsea began her career working for Ivan Reitman before moving on to Blumhouse where she was a personal assistant to Jason Blum for years, during which she learned an incredible amount about the business of horror. With the release of two new feature films in less than a year, Chelsea's been on fire! We got to chat about her career history and what she's learned from working with industry forces like Ivan Reitman, Dallas Sonnier, and Jason Blum. We also chatted extensively about Satanic Panic, and what she has in store next. But first, here are some key insights from this conversation with Chelsea Stardust: Work at a company that will invest in you. Jason Blum knew that Chelsea wanted to be a director, so he did everything in his power to give her hands-on experience and was a mentor to her while she worked as his executive assistant. People like Jason Blum, who care about their employees' career development to this degree are very rare in Hollywood but they do exist. Try to find them and work for them in any way possible. Talk through everything with the writers. Talk through every last word of the script with the writers so you can comprehend every element of nuance, story, and subtext. This will enable you to extend the script's deeper meaning to your actors, which makes for a much more cohesive movie. This is particularly important if you can't afford rehearsals. It's chaos, be kind. This Patton Oswalt quote is a credo that Chelsea stands behind when the going gets tough. Filmmaking is tough, and sets can be incredibly hectic, causing many people to lose their temper. As a director, it's not only your job to keep it together but to be kind, respectful, and generally fair to all of those around you. Doing so will enable you to be a positive outlier in an industry full of screamers. People want to work with people they like and respect, so the kind example you set can only help your career. Chelsea partially credits her career success to being consistently kind. ----- Produced by Simpler Media

Filmmaker Chelsea Stardust (SATANIC PANIC, ALL THAT WE DESTROY) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen to discuss her career journey from a 10 year old girl watching NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD and falling in love with the horror genre... to attending film school... to an internship at producer/director Ivan Reitman's Montecito Picture Company... to assisting producer Jason Blum at Blumhouse... to making short films... to directing her first feature. With discussions about productions "flipping," what it means to shoot "inside the zone," the harsh reality of "Hollywood accounting," and sound advice from Dr. Arwen for aspiring filmmakers struggling to create in a location where resources simply don't exist... this candid conversation is yet another example of why THE MOVIE CRYPT is often referred to as "free audio film school" by industry insiders. There's murder at camp and a song in our hearts this week as we welcome acclaimed producer and filmmaker Chelsea Stardust, director of the hit underground musical SLASHED and the upcoming feature ALL THAT WE DESTROY. Hello, Boys and Ghouls. Kat here. Welcome to Episode 8 of our Behind the Screams series, where we explore the world of fear, shock and horror by talking to tastemakers in the genre. Today on the show: director and producer Chelsea Stardust! Chelsea is smart, talented and has had a horror education that most of us would kill for...Recently, she took on the challenge of directing for the stage, which we talk about in this interview. ‘SLASHED! The Musical,’ a killer comedy musical love-letter to the classic 80’s Summer Camp Slasher Genre, premiered earlier this year at the Hollywood Fringe festival to rave reviews, and Kat talked to Chelsea in-depth about what it was like bringing it to life. Stay tuned at the end of this episode to hear a track from the show! Finally, a quick note: this interview has been banked for several weeks, so you’ll hear Chelsea talk about two huge influences for her, George Romero and Tobe Hooper, both of whom had not passed away at the time of this recording, otherwise, we would certainly have talked about it.
