"The Substance" has been one of the most talked-about films of 2024 ever since it had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. Most of the conversation has centered around Coralie Fargeat's maximalist direction, Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley's performances, Dennis Quaid eating shrimp, and, of course, the film's awe-inspiringly disgusting makeup work. Special Makeup Effects Designer And Supervisor Pierre Olivier Persin was kind enough to spend some time talking with us about his work on the film, which you can listen to below. Alec Gillis grew up in Orange County, California within sight of the Disneyland fireworks show. As a kid he roamed the mean streets of Main Street Disneyland, It was here he gained a lifelong appreciation of animatronics, but it was in the local movie theatres that he fell in love with genre films. At age 20 Gillis began working for Roger Corman on a film called BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS, along with James Cameron and Gale Anne Hurd. After working for various Makeup Effects luminaries such as Tom Savini and Greg Cannom,  Gillis was recommended by James Cameron to Stan Winston, where Gillis worked on effects for classic films such as ALIENS and PREDATOR. In 1988 he co-founded Amalgamated Dynamics, Inc. (ADI) with Tom Woodruff, Jr. TREMORS was the company's first feature, and the film's giant subterranean worms gained Gillis notoriety. The duo's work garnered Oscar nominations for STARSHIP TROOPERS, ALIEN 3 and won for DEATH BECOMES HER. Gillis has won numerous other awards such as BAFTAs and SATURNs.  His work has been seen in BRIGHT, IT 1 and 2, and currently the Disney/Fox Predator feature PREY, directed by Dan Trachtenberg. During his 3 decades with ADI, Gillis has also written numerous screenplays, written 3 books and produced/directed a feature film, HARBINGER DOWN. His new solo company, Studio Gillis, will continue the tradition Gillis is known for of high-quality Creature, Make Up and Practical Effects. In this episode we discuss: Alec's unique way of ending up entering in the industry How his passion for scary movies and monsters as a child became a dream job Coming up with James Cameron and a fun full circle moment The ins and outs of how they make monsters and creatures from start to finish How technology has contributed and changed his job throughout the years He talks about his foray into directing and acting His favorite monster and experience Alec discusses how his whole family has become an industry family (despite his best efforts :)) Make sure to watch out on Tipsy Casting's instagram for a behind the scenes video look into Alec's shop and some of the amazing creatures he's created! 27 years after becoming a classic dark comedy that earned seven Academy Award nominations, including Oscar wins for Joel Coen and Ethan Coen (best original screenplay) and Frances McDormand (best actress), "Fargo" is back for its fifth season as an anthology series on FX and Hulu. Showrunner Noah Hawley's latest installment of the show that premiered in 2014 presents another standalone story that remains connected with the other seasons as well as the original movie. Season 5, which premieres Nov. 21, features Jon Hamm, Juno Temple and Jennifer Jason Leigh as the latest A-list actors to join the revolving cast that has included Billy Bob Thornton, Martin Freeman, Allison Tolman and Colin Hanks (season 1); Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons, Kieran Culkin, Patrick Wilson and Ted Danson (season 2); Ewan McGregor, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Carrie Coon (season 3); and Chris Rock and Jason Schwartzman (season 4). While the first three season received generally positive reviews from both critics and audiences, the fourth season was mixed as the show was Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with an 84% score from critics but a weaker 54% from audience ratings. So how good is season 5? While we keep things spoiler-free, co-host Bruce Miller screened half of the episodes and not only thinks it's the best show we'll get for the remainder of 2023, but it's at least the second best "Fargo" season to date. Miller has interviews with the three big stars as well as costume designer Carol Case and makeup department head Gail Kennedy.  Where to watch and more coverage "Fargo" the series on FX/Hulu "Fargo" the 1996 film on Max Contact us! Bonus Episode: Ok so a little bonus episode for everyone because on September 13th an incredible book is due to be born into our world,  Howard Berger and Marshall Julius are introducing us to Masters of Makeup Effects - A century of practical magic! So often when I chat to artists about their start in the industry and we talk about when they were a kid or a teenager, so many of them will mention a book or a magazine that they managed to beg their parent to get for them and it ends up being so cherished and loved, read over and over again from start to finish…. I am so excited that there is a book now that some of those artists are actually not only in but it will be a first book that some young movie making, makeup effects loving kids will be begging their parents to get them and so the cycle continues…  It really is such a beautiful book, so so well thought out with so much love for the work and the community within its pages…   This Episode is brought to you by: Luxe Skin FX

Blue Velvet stars Isabella Rossellini, Kyle McLachlan, Laura Dern, and Dennis Hopper. Written and produced by David Lynch, The New York Times notes the film has been called both ''the sickest movie ever made'' and ''the work of a genius naif.'' Makeup Effects Artist Jeff Goodwin created the horrifying and iconic severed human ear in the film, in addition to cuts, abrasions, a brain protruding from a live human skull, and other gore. The ear, however, developed into its own character on set and became known as "Mr. Ear."

As a tie in to our event, Toxic Avengers #PodGame, we humbly submit our review of The Toxic Avenger Part III: The Last Temptation of Toxie. For those of you not following the announcements on instagram, Toxic Avengers #PodGame was Jake's idea to coincide with the release of Avengers: End Game, but with horror's favorite mutated monster hero: Toxie. Be sure to check out Cult Classic Mania (reviewing The Toxic Avenger), Gorelords (reviewing The Toxic Avenger Part II), Terror Trio (reviewing Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV), and Copulators Die First (reviewing episodes of Toxic Crusaders).  In this film, Toxie (Ron Fazio/ John Altamura) has a sumo duel with the Devil (Rick Collins), in a vague video game format, which involves the green winged beast being peed on. While that sounds awesome, it comes after a gauntlet of watching Toxie try to keep real jobs to pay eye surgery for his girlfriend, Claire (Phoebe Legere). This film and Part II were originally intended to be one film; however, given issues with the run time, the film was split. You can tell that there are filler scenes and some black magic trickery to stretch the plot like a lumpy Stretch Armstrong (or Vac-Man if you remember those).  While not the pinnacle of Llyod Kaufman's (Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead, Class of Nuke 'Em High, Terror Firmer, Rocky) filmography, the film is definitely work the watch-- if only to get to the fourth installment. Also, the melt scene by Jerry Macaluso (Darkman, Mystery Men, Little Nicky) is surprisingly awesome.   This week's "Hidden Track" was graciously provided by Bat$hit!crazy (@batshitcrazy_band). Be sure to stay tuned after the episode to hear their song Ellen's Grave.  https://campsite.bio/cultclassicmania, https://linktr.ee/gorelords If you ever have feedback or recommendations on future episodes, please let us know at slasherspod@gmail.com.
